Nancinetters,
I'm a pretty quiet member, okay really quiet but I have to share this
with you. My twin boys, Joshua and Jordan, were born on Thursday
afternoon and today (Saturday) I had them both on my lap while I sat on
our rocker, playing them their first Nanci (OVOR) and quietly singing
along. I know they are very young but they had been crying and as she
started singing, they sighed and settled down, giving me and the
direction of the speakers occasional cross-eyed glances until they both
feel into a deep, happy slumber.

Subject: NN: Tom Russel close encounter (No Nanci)
From: GV (gvallest@online.no>
Reading the newspaper during breakfast I read that Tom was in town, and would
play songs and sign his new CD at a bookstore today. I walked in early to
check exactly were it was and met Tom and Andrew Hardin during soundcheck. Tom
nodded at me, obviously recognizing me from somewhere when I came in. It
turned out he recognized me from one of the Barbican concerts, when I was
sitting in second row. I was introduced to Andrew and shook their hands and
talked a little before they went on with their soundcheck. Before they started
the
mini concert, I asked if I could take pictures, and yes, of course I could.
They played St. Olavs gate (the bookstore is only 50 meters away from The
Scotsman saloon) The Man from God Knows Where, The Outcast, Throwin'
Horseshoes at The Moon and Sitting Bull in Venice from the new album. A short
set, but very, very good.
I got their autographes on the CD, mentioned the Barbican concerts last year,
and they both agreed that they were good.
They will be playing in Oslo tomorrow night, at a place called the 'Palace
Grill'

From: "John R. Mellby" (jmellby7@airmail.net>
I just got back on the list at my home email (its annoying when
your company changes email addresses several times in a year).
I remember at a concert in Dallas Nanci commented that James Hooker
got to sing "Gulf Coast Highway" with Emmy Lou Harris, and that
was a significant thrill for him.
Are there any recordings of this song?

Subject: NN: Steve Earle in Kansas!
From: Kevin and Diane Gray (houndogs@micoks.net>
Any NanciNetters in the Kansas City region?
Finally have somebody we talk about on this
line playing close to home. Earle will be at Roadhouse
Ruby's South in Olathe on Tuesday, March 30.
I'll be wearing a Bottom Line t-shirt if it's warm
that evening. I was in New York about four years
ago. My daughter was there to attend NYU.
We ran up to the Bottom Line to buy her brother
a t-shirt. While there we noticed Steve Earle's
roadies setting up for that night's performance,
one I hoped to get back for but never did. While
paying for the shirt, a guy came up the bar and
asked a few questions of another barkeep.
As daughter and I walked down the street, I stopped
in my tracks and said, "Erika, was that...?" She
laughed at me and said, "Yeah, Dad, that was
Steve Earle." I issued a few more choice words,
and missed the show that night.
Finally, I get to see him only 30 minutes from
home.
I'll be looking for any netters...

I just saw Steve with the Del McCoury band on Tuesday night. AMAZING
show--also expect to be there a while. The show went on for three and a
half hours (with a 15 minute intermission).
Actually, I wasn't looking forward to the Del McCoury part of the set, not
really being a big bluegrass fan. I actually thought to myself, "Diane,
Shawn Kimbro LOVES bluegrass and look what good taste he has," and reminded
myself keep an open mind. Well, Del McCoury and his band are such great
musicians, they won me and the entire Philly audience over completely. I
was really impressed with them, and am planning on buying my first Del
McCoury Band cd. Amazing mandolin player. And Del McCoury is so gracious
and charming that I enjoyed myself beyond all expectation. I would go see
them perform again without Steve Earle...Shawn, you're right. What else
can I say?
Steve and the band (sans Del McCoury) start out on stage. They perform a
while, then Del joins them for a few songs, and then Steve leaves them on
stage. Del and his band perform for about a half hour, and then there's a
break. Steve does some solo stuff next, and then the band joins them.
Steve is a wonderful performer--reminiscent of Bruce Springsteen, which to
me is the highest compliment I can give someone. He is in peak form, too.
And, let's not forget--he's Stacy's brother!
I really can't recommend seeing this tour highly enough. You are in for a
real treat.

Subject: NN: Thoughts on artists changing styles (long)
From: Tom Gill (tgill@igc.org>
Nancinetters,
There's been some discussion on this list recently (and in fact, for a
long time) about how Nanci has seemed to change her musical style over
the years, from very simple, stripped-down, bare-bones folk music, to
more complex productions with multiple instrumentalists and production
values and even soon a symphony orchestra. Some people love these
changes, while others long for the "old" Nanci.
My musical tastes are broad, and I admit that I'm on the mailing lists
of a numbe rof otehr musicians besides the Nanci Net. In the same way
that some people have only one favorite artists, others (like me) have
many favorites and many styles. Some people may go to a favorite
restaraunt, find one signature dish, and order it over and over again.
Others will never want to order the same thing twice until they've tried
everything else on the menu. Some people may not want to go back to
that restaraunt again until they've tried all the other restaraunts in
town- "been there, done that."
I've seen the EXACT same debates that have raged recently about Nanci on
other mailing lists over the years- only the artists' name and a few
words have been changed. I will use the example of two other
singer-songwriters who have recorded Nanci's "Gulf Coast Highway": Jimmy
Buffett and Bruce Springsteen.
The BRFTM vs PIMW NanciNet debate is exchoed
in Jimmy Buffett's Parrothead world. There, this has actually led to
organized splits in his fandom, from the BIGs (the "Buffett is God"
crowd, who love everything he does), to the GOPs (the Grumpy Old
Parrotheads), who long for Buffett's "early" singer-songwriter sound,
before he traded the steel guitar for steel drums. These guys have in
fact formed a semi-serious organization, the Church of Buffett Orthodox:
you can see their web page and credo at http://www.cobo.org
On the other end of the musical evolution one could say is Bruce
Springsteen. There were howls amongst the BossTramps when he fired the
E-Street Band in the late 1980s, moved to a sparser sound, and there
were positive CONNIPTIONS amongst many when Bruuuuuuce issued the (IMHO)
classic, incredible "Ghost of Tom Joad" album a few years ago. "Hey,"
went a lot of screams on the Springsteen list, "why has Bruce deserted
his fans? what's with this acoustic, folk-music crap? We want Rock and
Roll!!! Give us albums that sound like "Born To Run" again and again,
and again and again!!!"
In the late 1960s and early 1970s, Al Stewart was a "sensitive"
singer-songwriter writing and singing about his lost loves and school
days. Then he discovered a sense of history, started singing about
Nostradamus and World War II and the French Revolution in songs with
saxophones and Alan Parsons production. Stewart has in fact all but
disavowed his earlier songs, and essentially never performs them in
public any more: many of his earlier fans are still crushed. But he's
changed, and so has his music.
Singer-songwriter James White (check out his album 'Life in the
Laid-Back Lane') said recently on the Buffett list, "I think the debate
over the 'old sound' and the 'new sound' is a moot point, because it is
in everyone's best interest for an artist to change. I guess we can all
have our preferences, but I tend to think that if you ain't moving
forward, you might as well be going backwards."
I think two forces are at work here. First, I think it's to some extent
a "human nature" thing, where people who have been with an artist for
many, many years will tend to love the early stuff best. I think that
in a lot of ways, the FIRST music you hear from an artist [in any genre]
sort of etches in your mind "what that person is supposed to sound
like." For people who were with Nanci from the very start, I am sure
that some of her recent, rockier, more-highly-produced records could
sure seem "not right." I know for myself, I first really got into Nanci
during the Storms/LNGH period, and that's what I tend to think of as
"classic Nanci," though I love everything from her sparsest to most
highly produced stuff. If you first got into Springsteen via "Born to
Run," or became a Buffett fan with "A1A," then that's what seems
"right" to you.
The second point? Different strokes for different folks.

From: Susan Krauss (susankrauss@earthlink.net>
This was posted on Oh Boy.com:
A Message From John Prine
"About fifteen months ago I was diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma.
This cancer was located in my right neck area.
After speaking with various doctors and oncologists in Nashville and
Memphis, I headed down to MD Anderson Cancer Clinic in Houston, TX. Some
very good friends in Memphis had spoken highly of the facility.
I had surgery in January of 1998. The doctors removed a small tumor taking
a portion of my neck with it. I had six weeks of radiation therapy
following the surgery.
It's been almost a year since the surgery and radiation and I'm feelin'
great. Actually a whole lot better than I've felt in a long time.
I feel strong enough to resume touring and getting back to work again.
Until now I had decided to remain private about this matter so my family
and I could concentrate on me getting better. Now I want to make a public
statement to let you all know what has been happening.
Those of you who knew I had a health problem, but not exactly what it was,
I appreciate your quiet concern. Particularly members of the media who kept
it quiet...Thank you!
In closing, I'm looking forward to getting back on the road and singing my
songs. Hopefully my neck is looking forward to its job of holding my head
up above my shoulders
Hope to see you soon,
John Prine"

Spurred by Susan's message, and echoing what was previously posted, I just
wanted to remind everyone that John Prine will have an album of duets
released in late summer. The duets include Nanci, Iris DeMent, and others.
Sounds like a great project. One of my favorite John Prine duets is with
Margo Timmins on "Black Eyed Man", a fine album by the Cowboy Junkies.
Glad to hear John is doing o.k.!

Dear all,
Firstly, I found a supply of buttons/badges, pretty cheap and you can order
from the UK using your visa card. Their website is at...
http://www.polikicks.com
They have an absolute ton(ne) of interesting stuff.
Secondly, thanks to everyone who knew more than me about
when I saw Nanci first! It was 1989 at the Cambridge Folk Festival.
I did think that 1985 sounded like a long time ago...
I also saw her again there and so this must have been 1992, does anyone
know if this the one when Lyle Lovett was there? I think basically
I've been too many times and they have all started to meld into one.
Plus the fact that there is a lot of alcohol available at these concerts.
In fact it might have been during Lyle Lovett when me and a friend
downed a bottle of home-mixed vodka and orange and then found we couldn't
get up at the end. We had to stay where we were while everybody cleared
off to another tent!
I'm hoping to go this year, but of course being a responsible parent these
days
I shall just be drinking mineral water.

Robert, didn't I read in your review of the November OV2 concert that you
missed the group photo, because you couldn't deceide between a Pepsi and a
whisky? But keep trying :0).
See the review and photo, Robert is watching us, at http://fly.to/nanci .
According to an Irish friend of me Guinness is certainly NOT mineral water,
he works with water board and that was the most important job in Ireland,
because water was used to manufacture Guinness.

Subject: NN: re:song
From: Bob Riegner (rg48@yahoo.com>
Dear Nanci-Netters--
I think I've mentioned my spinal chord abcess that left me unable to
play guitar. During the 28 some years that I did play, I also wrote
songs (I started doing this almost immediately as I was teaching myself
to play guitar, since it was easier to 'write' my own
stuff than figure out other peoples songs).
Anyway, during those 28 years I wrote probably 50+ songs most of which
are best forgotten. But I do have probably 10 or 12 that I am proud
of. What this is leading up to is that I have written lyrics (not
poetry) for a song about Nanci. It is with great fear and trepidation
that I present them here (remember a
song writer's songs are like his children). So here goes:
ARE YOU LONESOME, OR JUST ALONE?
(Nanci's Song)
Words by Bob Riegner
Music by ??????
>From Austin to Dublin
From Nashville to San Antoine'
As you wander and spin your songs
Are you lonesome, or just alone?
As you weave your rare magic
And we claim it as our own
It makes us all wonder
Are you lonesome, sweet Nanci, or just alone?
Voice of an angel, strength of steel
Writing songs that strike so close to home.
Is that sadness we hear hiding in each song?
Are you lonesome, Nanci, or are you just alone?
(Bridge)
Are you lonesome, or just alone?
Is it Wanderlust or loneliness that makes you roam?
Or are you waiting for someone to "stand you still"
"And always will" to take you home?
As you bring such joy and meaning
To so many you'll never know
As your friends and family cherish you
Don't be lonesome. you're not alone.
Well, there it is. Please remember these are lyrics not poetry. I
had no melody in mind when I wrote the above (can't write melodies
without my guitar). Are there any muscians out there who would like
to write a melody for this song? Feel free to re-arrange, add or
omit words to make it fit your melody--I would be honored to hear the
results. Please note: I have no expectations or intentions to make
any money on the above--I just did it out of my love of music and Nanci.
Thanks for listening--please be 'gentle' in your criticism.
