My fiancee and I are planning to play "Roseville Fair"
from "One Fair Summer's Evening" as the song for the
first dance at our wedding. She had never heard of
Nanci before I turned her on to Nanci's music.

Ooooh, I love that song. If you haven't, check out Bill Staines.
He's got
an incredible guitar technique and a great voice in addition to being
a fine

Subject: NN: Questions on Latest Dates
   From: "John Houser" (jhouser@mail.accessone.com>

Thanks, Rob, for the latest dates. My email reader twisted the
document a
little, though, and it prompts a few questions:

> Fri July 2 Seattle, WA The Pier (Seattle Symphony)
> BMO

Is it just Nanci with the Symphony, or is the BMO there as well?

My first Nanci show of '99, nicely coinciding with my departure from the
Pacific Northwest to return to my home state of California. My last week
of residency up here will be one of great music, since Keb Mo is playing
the Pier the previous weekend - oh, and the rumors of me attending the
Go-Go's show the night after Nanci are unfounded ;-)

> Sun July 25 Saratoga, CA Villa Montalvo

Was this show Solo, with BMO or other arrangements?

Possibly my 2nd Nanci show of '99, though it would probably require me
finding quick employment back in the Bay Area. If anyone has any leads on a
company that wants to hire a person with an MBA, MS, lots of
Telecomm/Internet experience, and, possibly most importantly, fairly
decent taste in music, I'm accepting all leads ;-)

>Wed Nov 17 Arcata, CA Van Duzer Theatre
>Thu Nov 18 San Luis Obispo, CA Tom Rush's Club 47
>Wed Dec 1 Palo Alto, CA Stanford
>Thu Dec 2 Santa Rosa, CA Luther Burbank
>Fri Dec 3 Torrance, CA El-Camino College

If life is kind, I should be employed by the Fall and my second for sure,
possibly third Nanci show of '99. However, a question about the SLO show - I
did the graduate work there and Club 47 did not exist then (and
according to the Yahoo Yellow Pages, doesn't exist now). Anyone there know of
this new place? Maybe it's a mistake and she's really playing the local
Performing Arts Center. OK, I'm very biased because of my love for SLO, but
the PAC, care of the top flight Architecture School on campus and lots of big
local donors (including some Hearst money, I think), has some of the BEST
acoustics around...

Also, similar question on all these shows as Villa Montalvo. Solo, BMO, or
other?

Thanks for any and all help folks....

I just checked out the cover and liner notes for Mike Chesman's UPO2
cassette. I have to say I am totally blown away. Three of my song
submissions! Mike, you are very generous, and I thank you for your efforts on
this project.

I see now what a ton of work and time you must have put in to this. I am
totally blown away by Mike Cogliandro's cover art as well. Kudos to you
both. I can't wait to hear the final product.

Thanks again for your dedication to this project and for sharing our love of

Dear All. This is too weird. So I'm standing in line at the grocery store (
major DC chain) it's after 11:00pm (long hard day) I'm waiting to get checked
out and I find myself humming along to the muzak...suddenly I knew what I was
humming.....LNGH!!!! Too strange.
I started laughing, people started looking at me, I felt compelled to share my
joy (Nanci in the grocery store, late at night, in muzak) and humor. I don't
think they got it.

Adios! Evelyn "Is there anybody out there" McKinney

Subject: NN: Re: About Non-Nanci Content
   From: "Robert Pugsley" (RMP6@leicester.ac.uk>

OK, here we go...how come people rarely complain about
Non-Nanci content until they disagree with the specific
NNC? For me I enjoy reading all the spin-off stuff whether
it's about M*ril*y M*ns*n, or flowers, or taking road trips,
or the health of NNers, and so on.

More importantly than that though I believe Nanci's music is
directly relevant to this idea. Her world is an inclusive one, her
message (or at least one of them) is that we are all part of a wider
community and it's bodes us well to remember that...I want to hear
about what people here think about - even when I disagree with it.

Sorry to come over all mushy and 'FAD-like' but I've had a rough
weekend, with people I know getting caught up in the terrible
event in London on Friday evening. As some of you will know I'm
not a religious man but yesterday I took my boy to
Coventry and while there we visited the cathedral. Every
hour at that Cathedral they say prayers for people who have
requested them and for others - and at that particular moment they
offered up prayers to those in Yugoslavia - but my mind went straight
to those in London who are suffering and then I looked at my son as
he wondered haphazardly (the way 18 month old children do) around
the place, I couldn't help but imagine how people who have lost their
children there must be feeling...at times like this I just want to
read about other people's lives and I don't care if it's related to Nanci
or not...
I just want to know that life goes on...

I feel like I have to add my two cents here. I agree that this list is about
Nanci Griffith, and I look to the list to provide me info about Nanci that is
not necessarily mainstream knowledge. This includes the experiences of those
who have met Nanci, opinions on Nanci and her work, concert info, etc.

I would have to disagree, though, with the notion that this list is just about
Nanci. As I have mentioned before, Nanci is more than just the person we hear
singing and playing her guitar. Her experiences with other artists have
helped make her who she is. No place is this better seen that with her Other
Voices projects. Were it not for the Loretta Lynn's and Pete Seeger's and the
other artists too numerous to mention, what would have inspired her to pursue
the career that we have been blessed to enjoy? (Of course, the question is
rhetorical, and the scenario hypothetical, and there is no real answer to the
question. I am just attempting to express my thoughts about the importance of
other artists.)

As far as discussion about other artists, I believe that they are wholly
appropriate on this list. I may not be a fan of every artist that is
mentioned. In this respect, I can appreciate the argument that the list should
be limited to discussions about Nanci. In fact, I find Marilyn Manson to be
rather offensive and have chosen to entirely avoid his music. This is for
personal reasons that do not fall within the scope of this mail, but the fact
that others enjoy his music leads me to believe that it is acceptable to
discuss his music in this forum. The discussion of other artists on this list
is commonplace. Just because an artist does not fall into the same category
of music as Nanci, that should not be a reason to exclude them from
discussions
here. (And, no, I am not even certain which artists fall into that elusive
'Nanci' category. Where she has worked with everyone from the Crickets to
Lucinda to the Indigo Girls to the Chieftains, I find it difficult to
pigeon-hole her into just one category of music.)

I hope that the open exchange of musical ideas can continue on the list. I
(like many others) have discovered other great material to add to my
collection that was recommended by other users on the list that I might
not have otherwise known about.

Have a great day!

Paul Larsen

I used to get the digest of the NanciNet, and found that I enjoyed the
material presented, but I wanted more. When I switched to individual mailings,
I was initially overwhelmed by the sheer number of y'all out there! However, I
prefer getting information about shows and events and even off-the-wall stuff
because in some way, it relates to Nanci. If I wanted only Nanci, I'd go back
to the digest. That said, I haven't been on the digest since we have our new
list-daddy, so maybe it's different. Overall, I'm happy with the NN mailings I
get (except for the occasional SPAM that gets on, but that's life on the
'net).

   From: James_Troiano@umit.maine.edu (James Troiano)

Hi folks: The new Nanci concert schedule finally appeared on her website. I
was delighted to see that she will appear in Central Park, N.Y. on June 5.
Although this is not a great date for me, I will try to make it. Does anyone
know if there is a concert hall there, when tickets are available?, etc.

Thank you kindly, Jim Troiano

Hello Nanci Lovers,
Does anyone know if there is a Nanci screensaver available? I would love to
have one. I'm looking forward to seeing her performance in Cincinnati on
Friday. I hope she is over her illness. Does anyone know if she is playing
solo or with the band? By the way, I am in heaven over the Barbican concert
being on the internet. I saw her in Dublin last fall and listening again makes
me feel like I'm back in the front row.
Thanks for your help,

this may sound insane, but I think we should have pact not to disclose Nanci's
set lists for her up coming symphony shows. Having to put together a show on
such a large scale I'm sure the shows will all be similar and my show's not
till the end of june I DON't want to know, Ok that's a lie, I want to know,
but it sure would take away the excitement of wondering what to expect after
each song....so talk quietly amongst yourselves and don't tell

Greetings Nanci-philes:

well, it's official- Plane tickets have been bought, signed for and delivered.

Hotel rooms booked.

Now all I need is a compass and a few flights of fancy and voila:
Austin here I come.

:)

I didn't think it would actually happen, but since my friend is helping me
with my plane ticket, I will get the joy of seeing our Miss Nanci in her
hometown with the Austin Symphony. Sure to be an experience to remember and
cherish, always.

So.. which Netters do I get to meet?
I'll be the verbose, short and curvy red head with the huge smile on her face

Subject: NN: Among the Best of 1999
   From: "David Steere" (DSTEERE@sil.si.edu>

I cannot but imagine that my best of 1999 list will include the
TRANSATLANTIC SESSIONS 2. This two-cd set is extraordinary.
Co-musical directors, Ally Bain and Jerry Douglas have assembled a
Nashville/Dublin house band to die for. And the soloists are the
best:

TWO Nanci performances: ALWAYS WILL and BOOTS OF SPANISH LEATHER
Two Maura O'Connell performances: especially BLUE TRAIN and TROUBLE
IN THE FIELDS
Two great songs by Paul Brady, two by Eddi Reader, two by Radney
Foster (yes, Radney Foster!), two by Ricky Skaggs, two by Jerry
Douglas, Two by Aly Bain, etc. etc. Also appearing are Michael
Doucet, Sharon Shannon, Karen Mathieson, Rosanne Cash, Sharon White
and others. There are 30 cuts in all. The transatlantic mix of
musicians is intoxicating.

I am so glad I ordered the complete set from the UK. Thanks to Neil
Pearson of Fish Records (neil@fishrecords.co.uk;
http://www.fishrecords.co.uk
for shipping the set so fast. The U.S. version--whenever it does come
out--will be one cd. I can't imagine losing half of these marvelous
performances. For more information, check out the IONA/LISMOR
website
