Subject: NN: GET YOUR UPO2 TAPE
   From: Mike Chesman (chesman@preferred.com>

Okay here's the info. on getting a UPO2 tape.

The folks below have agreed to start making some copies. I think it will be
best if each person has to only make a dozen copies. They are welcome to
make more but they shouldn't feel obligated to do so. (I sent out a dozen
masters to the contributors but not everyone had the capability of making
dubs).

Step 1. E-mail me (chesman@preferred.com> with your request (PLEASE INCLUDE
BOTH AN EMAIL AND A MAILING ADDRESS IN THE BODY OF THE LETTER). That's
important because that information can get lost from headers when I send the
requests on to the branches.

ALSO....In the email subject write UPO2 REQUEST.

Step 2. I will forward 12 requests to each of the folks listed below. They
will then contact you and arrange how they will be handling their branch of
the tree. Some tapers like to pick up blanks locally and have you reimburse
them and others prefer folks to send blank tapes... Also, expect some minor
charge for a mailer and postage. With past trees, I have been able to
supply a Maxell XLII tape, a padded mailer, and postage for a no profit fee
of $5 or $6. This project will require a 60 minute tape.

If we need more tapers I will post a request calling for that need and run
off a few more masters for those folks. Please wait to see if a request is
posted.

The initial branches....
Steve Goldberger
Bob Juliano
Hank Van Slyke
Shawn Kimbro
Julie Broyles

Step 3. Now, these folks may or may not not have a way to duplicate the
color sleeve that came with their master cassette. I will be posting the
sleeve as a file you can download from my web site.
http://pages.preferred.com/~chesman/ngmain.html (It will be there as of May
15th). I believe I can make it so you simply print it out and it will be
the right size for the cassette case. For those that don't have access to a
color printer, you can send a self addressed stamped envelope to me along
with a dollar and I'll print you the two sided copy from the original files.
I hate to charge anything but the cover design eats up lots of color ink and
color refill cartridges are costly plus I'm guessing that I may have to run
a lot of ink through my printer to meet the demand for sleeves.

Hopefully this setup will work to everyone's satisfaction. If we run into
some snags we'll deal with them as they arise.

Subject: NN: Nanci with Hootie and the Blowfish
   From: Beth Herron (bherron@asgnet.psc.sc.edu>

The second song was indeed the Vic Chestnutt's "Gravity of the
Situation," which Nanci also did with Hootie during their "MTV
Unplugged" appearance several years ago. I think Darius also said
something like "I'm going to marry her someday, she just doesn't know
it." I know that he in particular has been a big Nanci fan for a long
time - one of their songs has a reference to Nanci's "It's a Hard Life."

Subject: NN: Nanci in Cinci
   From: "Gordon A. Allen" (allenga@muohio.edu>

I don't have much to add to Halesbop's review of Nanci's concert in
Cincinnati; he or she captured it very well. I was happy to read what
shoes she was wearing--she didn't jump high enough for me to see her
shoes. I guess it is common knowledge to everyone but me, but she
mentioned that she and the Blue Moon, accompanied by an orchestra,
recently recorded many of her classics. The CD is expected to be
available in Sept. The highlight of the evening for me was to hear
James and Nanci sind Gulf Coast Highway--a magic moment. Gordon

Has anyone heard of a New Jersey group called Sweet Beat? My son, a senior
at Valley Forge Military Academy, gave me a tape over the weekend. They are
fantastic! As far as I know, only one album and limited distribution. It's
a shame 'cause they are really great.

Subject: NN: Any information about "June 5--Central Park"
   From: "Musicant, Paul" (Paul.Musicant@CAX.USA.XEROX.COM>

Has anyone discovered any information about the Nanci appearance listed
for June 5 in Central Park, New York? I looked at the "summerstage.org"
website for the Central Park SummerStage events, and it indicates numberous
events beginning June 12, but no Nanci.

I am hoping to get to the June 5 concert in Central Park also. I have
friends I can stay with in Manhattan, who haven't found out any info yet
either, but I would be up for a get-togetger before or after the show as
well.

   From: Bob Ivers (bivers@sprintmail.com>

I'm wondering what this June 5th show might be. When I saw Mark's posting
of the new dates, I assumed that Nanci was going to be a part of this
year's Central Park "Summer Stage" concert series... something she'a
participated in before and the only real concert series that takes place in
the park. The schedule for this year's "Summer Stage" series has been
released, and there's no sign of Nanci or any show on June 5.

There are still some interesting shows, and most are free. The schedule
can be viewed at http://www.summerstage.org/events.html.

Subject: NN: Prine sighting
   From: dan.gerson@McKesson.com

Well not him really. But did anyone catch the movie "Pushing Tin"? In
the scene where Cusack confronts Thornton at the trout stream,
Thornton is wearing a John Prine hat. I thought that was pretty cool.
Unfortunately the movie itself is fairly lame. Sort of a tossup
whether to see it or not, although Cate Blanchett is miraculously
transformed from her role as Elizabeth I.

If you are looking for a great movie to see, try "Cookie's Fortune".
     Simply wonderful.

Subject: NN: Re: Prine Sighting
   From: Shawn Kimbro (kimbro@planetc.com>

Hi Nanci-Netizens,

Dan's mention of the hat in "Pushing Tin" reminded me I hadn't posted
this yet. Apologies for the delay.

I was surprised two weeks ago when, upon arriving back to my office
after a week's vacation, I found tickets to see John Prine at the
Tennessee Theater lying on my desk. Even though I didn't have a clue
where they came from, I quickly slipped them inside my suit pocket and
made plans to attend. I haven't been following Prine as closely as I
once did, but I started getting very excited when I walked up beneath
the big bright marquee which read, "John Prine - Paradise 99."

I was surprised to see the theater nearly sold out. There had been very
little publicity for the event, but I guess folks know Prine wherever he
travels. And travel he did, rambling through songs like "Big Ol' Goofy
World," "Angel From Montgomery," and "Daddy's Little Pumpkin," to the
accompaniment of nearly 1500 voices. Folks who don't like fans singing
at concerts might as well have stayed at home. Everyone, including me,
joined in.

John started out playing with his band but they left the stage just
before "Dear Abby" and John did seven or eight songs alone. He finished
the segment with "Sam Stone" during which the band returned. The
Tennessee Theater allows beer and the crowd got pretty wild at times. I
even noticed a deep purple haze appear over some sections as a pungent
smell filled the air. Requests were yelled out between each song and at
every pause in John's voice. "Paradise" was by far the most shouted
word in the house. One of my favorite moments came when Prine launched
into A.P. Carter's little heard classic recorded right here in Knoxville
in the 1930's, "Up On Bear Creek." John Prine knows music.

John closed with "Lake Marie" then came back to begin an encore with
"Hello In There." After that he re-introduced R.B. Morris who had
opened the show with a rousing version of "Thunder Road." Once R.B. was
on stage and ready, the rowdy crowd grew strangely silent as, without
introduction, John Prine began to sing the words we'd all come to hear:

"When I was a child my family would travel
Back to Western Kentucky where my parents were born"

Ah, Paradise!

Warm Regards,
-Shawn

their dreams." -John Prine

Subject: NN: I'm Nanci List Newbie
   From: Patrick Gibson (pag@odetics.com>

Dear list,

Hello, my name is Patrick Gibson. I've been listening to Nanci's Flyer
album for the last six months or so. Up until then I had only caught
glimpses of Nanci on PBS's Austin City Limits. Alas, I have fallen under
the spell of Nanci. This feels a little strange. I've never shown an open
display of fanaticism for any popular artist. I guess you'll all agree that
Nanci is a special case.

As for myself, I am a guitarist and formally trained musician (French Horn,
University of Southern California), although I try not to wear it on my
sleeve, if you know what I mean. I spend my days as an electronics engineer
at a company across the street from Disneyland in Anaheim (whoopee). This
is where I am writing from.

That's all for now, list. I look forward to lurking for a while, and
eventually contributing to the list. Please let me know if this e-mail has
any problems and I will try to mop it up.

Regards,

-Patrick Gibson
