Hello,
Just a reminder that tomorrow is the end of the trivia contest posted last
weekend. Get busy on those answers and send them in! There are still
copies of the video to be had. You'll treasure a copy of this promotional
tape and the OVOR footage in contains that wasn't on the commercially
released video. A couple of Nanciphiles have told me some of the questions
were a wee bit on the challenging side, but you don't need to get them all
right. So far, no one has! (The contest ends tomorrow, May 16th, at 5:00
p.m. Pacific Standard Time-U.S.)
Julie.
Nancinet 1999 Trivia Contest #2:
1. What movie inspired both Nanci's song "If Wishes Were Changes" and the
concept for the "Speed of the Sound of Loneliness" video?
2. Which of Nanci's songs shares a title with a Thomas Wolfe novel?
3. What was Nanci's first non-musical profession after graduating from the
University of Texas?
4. Name three motion pictures in which a song sung by Nanci has been
played.
5. Which performer on Nanci's recording of "If I Had A Hammer" was present
when Pete Seeger and Lee Hays wrote the song in the 50's?
6. Nanci used to be the opening act for a singing duo from which one of the
members later sang on a Nanci recording. Who is this person?
7. Name seven songs on which Nanci and James Hooker share writing credits.
(Just them or with others).
8. It has been written about Nanci that she, "May just be one of America's
best poets, and for sure is one of its best songwriters." Where did this
appear?
9. Nanci's first of many references to an angel in a song she wrote and
recorded, and which was released commercially, appeared in which song?
10. Which of Nanci's co-producers was once a member of the "Cowboy's Ragtime
Band?"

Subject: NN: LNGH dance remix released
From: HenryJG@aol.com
I don't always follows read my digests thoroughly, so I apologize if this is
repetitive.
A dance remixed version of the song LNGH is available on a CD called Winter
Party 2 put out by Centaur Records. I don't have it, but I saw it in a store
yesterday. It's a 2 CD set and LNGH is on the first CD, which is a
continuously mixed series of dance tracks mixed by DJ Julian Marsh. (The 2nd
CD is a mix by DJ Tony Moran).
To buy it, go to www.centaurmusic.com. Or if you have a local store that
specializes in dance music, they'd probably carry it. E.g., Oak Law Records
in Dallas or 12" Dance in Washington DC. They also often carry these CDs
("circuit party mixes") in gay book stores and gay novelty stores (but
usually not in regular record stores). The copy I saw was in a gay novelty
store in Dupont Circle in DC.
FYI, this type of "circuit party" mix CD is supposed to collect promo-only
and other hard-to-find dance remixes that are played at circuit parties,
which are big, commercially-organized events for gay men, usually held in a
warm climate, where you pay like $35 per party to get into a series of
parties that can last round the clock for 2 or 3 days. I've never been to
one (being settled down and all, besides not having the money, the physique,
or the stamina!) but I've read a few articles about them in gay magazines.
Apparently they feature lots of shirtless dancing and illegal stimulants.
Does anyone have this CD? Is this LNGH one of the remixes that were
discussed last fall? Is it commercially available anywhere else? I'd like
to get it, but I'd prefer to get one that isn't mixed into other songs at the
beginning and end (as this one is). Also, could someone send me the contact
info (e-mail or web address) for the fellow who was doing the remixes
discussed previously?
Thanks,
John

Subject: NN: From Nanci to Iris to Kate...
From: "David Steere" (dsteere@sil.si.edu>
Once again, another great import comes from the U.K. just on the
heels of the Transatlantic Sessions 2--Kate Rusby's new cd, SLEEPLESS.
Kate accompanies herself on piano and guitar and enlists great
support from John McCusker (her producer) on fiddle and banjo, Andy
Cutting on accordian and a host of other fine instrumentalists.
Simple, quiet, slow arrangements work right to the heart.
Six traditional songs hightlight Kate's inimitable, sweet, mournful
voice. My favorites are "The Cobbler's Daughter" and "The Unquiet
Grave." In the case of the latter, I pulled out my "Joan Baez 5"
album to revisit her performance. Sad to say, she sounds shrill to me
now. For those who doubted Kate was a songwriter, she has penned four
beautiful songs for SLEEPLESS. Particularly wonderful is "All God's
Angels"--a tragic duet with Rusby and Tim O'Brien who is in fine voice
(and plays mandolin): an unexpected but affecting combination of very
different voices. "The Sleepless Sailor," too, is very moving with
great quiet guitar work and harmony vocals by Roger Wilson. Kate
performs one cover and what a surprise how well her voice and approach
suit Iris DeMent's "Our Town." She does a sensitive, heartfelt,
idiomatic job on one of Iris' best songs.
This is a real winner from Pure Records, UK. As it is still
uncertain when Compass will release this in the US, you may want to
order it from England. Thanks, again, Neil Pearson, of Fish Records
(www.fishrecords.co.uk) for getting SLEEPLESS to me so fast.
This is becoming a wonderful year for new cd releases. SLEEPLESS
was released not long after Niamh Parson's exquisite BLACKBIRDS &
THRUSHES on Green Linnet. That latter cd also boasts what is to my
ears the best version of "The Water is Wide" (which includes a key
extra verse not usually performed) and gorgeous versions of "Banks of
the Nile" and especially "Fhear a Bhata" (a delightful alternative
reading to Rebecca Pidgeon's beautiful one on FOUR MARYS).

Just a note to second David's comments on Kate Rusby's "Sleepless". My
copy arrived from England last week and it has not stopped playing
since. It's a beautiful CD. Aside from "Hourglass" and "Sleepless", she's
on 2 other CDs recently released by Compass in the U.S.: "Kate Rusby and
Katherine Roberts" (voted best folk album in the U.K. for 1995) and
"infinite Blue" by the Poozies. I can't recommend her highly enough!

Recently posted on the House of Blues and Ticketmaster websites is a
previously unannounced Nanci date: Thursday, July 22, at the House of Blues

This date seems to fit snugly among the San Diego, Portland, and San Jose

is excellent for close encounters with the performers, if you have the
stamina and skills to stand and maneuver among the crowds for several hours.

Folks,
Seriously, if anyone in the L.A. area want to do a get together for the
July 22, speak up. It really is my birthday, I'll be thirty-nine(honestly,
for like the first and only time). So I don't know if dinner is going to be
an option with me. We could always chum up in some smart bar, take it over
long enough to destroy its business for the evening and leave right before
curtain time. I don't drink, so I can be the designated driver. , My car
has a big comefy trunk, so more than just the usual six can be driven in
style. If those options don't pan out, we we could find each other there.
I guess we could take the lead of the 'brides of Dwight' and all wear size
14 leather mini skirts, yellow name tags and talk in baby talk, so we will
know who is who, but I think my best baby talk days are behind me, so I
think the hats with the big feathers on them is the ticket. Gabba, gabba hey.

Subject: Nanci at the Ryman 5/15/99 (part 1)
From: KSandersn@aol.com
Wow. Old Friends: the Concert exceeded my wildest expectations. You get Nanci
Griffith, Guy Clark, Emmylou Harris, Rodney Crowell, and Vince Gill together,
and you have the makings for one helluva show. I'd been half expecting the
show to come off like a thrown together hodgepodge, with each artist doing a
20 minute segment of their own, and perhaps getting together with the others
for a song or two at the beginning and end. Instead, for the better part of
three hours, the five artists flowed in and out of the spotlight, interacting
with one another in ever-changing patterns that never ceased to be
delightful. It was a genuinely magical "once in a very blue moon" evening.
None of the artists was actually off stage for more then a few moments during
the show. Most of the time, they appeared in groups of two or three together,
and those who were not in the spotlight for the moment would walk over to one
side of the stage to sit, watch, and listen from a sofa and chair grouping
which was set up rather like you might find in someone's living room. At
times, one or the other who had been sitting on the sofa would get up, walk
over to a microphone, and join in the singing. This music fan felt a bit like
she was voyeur to the jam session of her dreams. It was easy to imagine being
the proverbial fly on the wall and overlooking a party attended by all those
"Old Friends" as they joked around with one another, and, alternately either
jumped into the musical action, or took a seat to sip a drink and listen to
the others.
Nanci's amount of time in the spotlight did not disappoint this bonafide
Griffith fan. When she wasn't soloing or dueting with someone, she was still
behind a microphone much of the time singing background harmony with one or
more of the others. I love to hear her sing harmony almost as much as I love
to hear her take the lead. Heck, it was even fun to see her sitting over on
that couch taking a break and observing.
I was too caught up in the moment to want to fiddle with writing down the set
list, so here's a big thank you to Barry who posted it on Rodney Crowell's
AOL message board. Here's what we heard:
1) Old Friends--Guy on lead with all the other 4 on stage singing/playing.
2) I Don't Love You Much Do I--Guy on lead with Emmylou on harmony and Vince
playing. (I'd hoped they would do this one!)
3) If I Needed You--Emmylou with Vince. (bee-yoo-tee-ful.)
4) If I Could Only Win Your Love--Emmylou with Rodney and Vince.
5) I Still Miss Someone--Nanci with Rodney.
6) Always Will--Nanci (She said she was doing it as a special request for a
friend who was in attendance.)
7) Ain't Living Long Like This--Rodney with all 4.
8) Stuff That Works--Guy and Rodney.
9) Jenny Dreamed of Trains--Vince with Nanci (Nanci's harmony was looovely. I
wish she would record this with Vince.)
10) Whenever You Come Around--Vince (Nanci, from over at the couch, was
visibly moved by this one.)
11) Pancho & Lefty--Emmylou with Rodney and Vince. (they remembered Townes
before this song, and there was a wonderful tribute of applause from the
audience.)
12) Even Cowgirls Get The Blues--Emmylou with Rodney and Vince.
13) Randal Knife--Guy with Vince.
14) The Key--Vince with Guy. (Before this song, Vince remarked that he
particularly wanted to do it after Randall Knife. Of course, Randall Knife is
a tribute to Guy's father, and Vince's "The Key" is also a tribute to his own
father. He said that his father, like Guy's, was a lawyer, and that also,
like Guy, his father had died when he was 40. Vince got very emotional doing
this song, and when it was over, he and Guy were standing face to face. Guy
puckered up, leaned over, and Vince kissed him square on the mouth. It was
both very touching and funny at the same time.)
15) It's A Hard Life Wherever You Go--Nanci with the other 4 (Emmylou sang
the second verse. It was so special to hear Nanci and Emmy sing this song
together, that I didn't feel as though I was hearing the song for the
ten-thousandth time. It was thrilling, and as though the song was brand new
to me. As Nanci closed her eyes and listened to Emmylou's voice, I wondered
what she was feeling....if she was just into the song, or if she was feeling
that special pride a songwriter must feel when they hear a voice like Emmy's
singing their lyrics.)
Intermission.

From: KSandersn@aol.com
Following the intermission, as I returned to my seat, _Cruel to be Kind_ was
playing over the PA. I wondered if they had borrowed one of Nanci's concert
"filler music" tapes. (g>
16) Home Grown Tomatoes--Guy and the other 4
17) Rock-a My Soul-Rodney.
18) Til I Gain Control Again--Rodney with Vince (Emmylou joined in after
verse 2).
19) Across The Great Divide--Nanci with Emmylou and VInce. (Before the song,
Nanci said that a lot of us probably knew the words to the chorus, and she
invited us all to sing along, stating that if we did, it would earn us "a
seat up at the bar in heaven." I sang. (g>)
20) Prayer In Open D-Emmylou
21) What They All Call Love--Vince and Emmylou
22) She Ain't Going Nowhere--All 5; Guy sang verse 1, Rodney 2,
Guy and Nanci 3.
23) Black Diamond Strings--Guy with Rodney and Vince.
24) Ford Econoline--Nanci with Vince accompanying on guitar.
25) Dublin Blues--Guy and Nanci. (wow)
26) Boulder To Birmingham--Emmylou and the other 4. (wow again)
27) Go Rest High On That Mountain--Vince and the other 4 (All were gathered
around one microphone for this one. The blend of voices was just incredible,
and words cannot express how thrilling it was.)
28) Leaving Louisiana In The Broad Daylight--Rodney and the other 4.
29) Desperadoes Waiting For A Train--Guy and the other 4.
Encore: Another version of Old Friends. Susanna Clark, who was largely
responsible for planning this show, was on stage for this, standing over by
the couch, and Nanci kept motioning for her to come over and stand with the
rest of the group. Susanna was too humble, though, and remained standing to
the side. At any rate, the comradery displayed all evening by those involved
made it clear that the show's title, "Old Friends," was an appropriate one.
By the way, Nanci's voice was clear and strong, and, in case anyone is
wondering, there was no band, just the five artists and their guitars.
Vince's guitar picking was a highlight, and he had the instrumental skills to
fill in during breaks in songs when a band might otherwise have been missed.
When his pickup went out during the break of one song, Vince never missed a
beat, but simply moved in towards the nearest microphone, raised his Taylor
guitar high and vertical, and proceeded to play heck out of it.
OFR (obligatory fashion report):
The Nanster was attired in a long black satiny dress, black velour-like
cardigan, and black flat shoes. Her hair appeared longer than it was last
time I saw her, though it may have just looked longer because it wasn't
curled. At one point, one of my daughters, who is all of 16, leaned over and
whispered to me, facetiously, "You know, Nanci is very pretty for an *old*
woman." (chuckle>
Nanci was very gracious to everyone at the reception. She must have signed a
couple hundred items and smiled for dozens of pictures. Nanci was a real
trouper, outlasting all the celebs except for Emmy and Vince. I feel very
fortunate to have had the opportunity to say hello to her. Vince, bless his
heart, was virtually pinned up against the wall by a swarm of starry-eyed
fans, but he gamely signed whatever was put in front of him. Emmy was very
sweet, Rodney was a total gentleman, and Guy, well, what can I say? Ladies,
you have not been hugged until you have been hugged by Guy Clark, unless you
have been hugged by Kenn Lippert. I have now been hugged by both, and
consider myself a lucky woman.
Oh, yeah! Good news! The concert was filmed for TNN, and I assume it will be
aired as a special at some later date. The fellow who welcomed the audience
before the show read an announcement which stated that we all agreed to have
our likenesses, as captured during the filming of the concert, licensed to
TNN for perpetuity. I sure hope they didn't film me, because I was in a
complete state of bliss, and I don't want to have to explain to my mother how
the goofy look on my face was completely natural. LOL
Kelly "proud owner of a signed copy of Nanci's recent Dirty Linen cover"
Sanderson
ps. I noticed that the denim jacket Rodney was wearing had The Crickets logo
on the back of it. Well, someone over on his AOL message board said that
Rodney is involved in a project with the Crickets. It sounds like they are
doing a tribute album, with the proceeds going to the Crickets. As I
understand it, Rodney is doing That'll Be the Day. Paul McCartney was also
mentioned as a contributor, and, supposedly, Ronnie Milsap is being courted
to do Love is All Around. Anyway, I can't imagine them doing a Crickets
tribute album without Nanci being involved in it, so, perhaps we have another
Nanci recording to look forward to.

Subject: NN: Rediscovered gems
From: "comp" (mikebarrett@comp.netlineuk.net>
We are going on a touring holiday to Scotland next month - lots of
driving - so I need plenty of cassettes for the car, covering music that
will appeal to all four passengers - not an easy task. I usually compile
my own "various artists" tapes of assorted music, but as the only driver
I insist on one that is exclusively Nanci.
Since our last such holiday, OV2 has appeared so I've decided to do a
new "best of" cassette, and in assessing what to include I have been
re-playing all of my Nanci records in their entirety. This has been a
pleasant surprise and I thought I would share my thoughts on the earlier
albums.
THERE'S A LIGHT BEYOND THESE WOODS
Listening to this again, I am astonished that I failed to fully
appreciate songs like "West Texas Sun","Michael's Song" and "John Philip
Griffith". These were tracks that I had probably only listened to a
couple of times, but now I realise what I was missing.
POET IN MY WINDOW
Every track is excellent, but "Working in Corners" and "You Can Never Go
Home Again" are simply stunning. But I had forgotten just how good are
the likes of "Wheels", "Waltzing With the Angels" and "Trouble with
Roses".
ONCE IN A VERY BLUE MOON
The great tracks are of course "Ghost in the Music", "Time Alone",
"Roseville Fair" and "A Year Down in New Orleans", but a couple that I
had again overlooked are "Mary and Omie" and "Ballad of Robin
Winter-Smith".
LAST OF THE TRUE BELIEVERS
My favourite album anyway, but certain tracks that I had always thought
of as "lesser" ( in relative terms! ) have now crept up and jumped on
me, demanding due recognition - "Fly by Night" and "Love's Found a
Shoulder" for instance.
I'm obviously biased, but I don't really think that many other
contemporary artists' albums from as long ago would stand up to the same
scrutiny. I'm not saying that these earlier works are necessarily better
than their successors, but simply that they are excellent in their own
right, and that their impact is in no way lessened by Nanci's evolving
and maturing style.
And just to get down to basics, I think that Nanci looks even more
gorgeous now than she did then!
Regards to all,
Mike Barrett
