Subject: NN: A Ring Around the Austin Moon (too)
From: poetmuse@prodigy.net
**First Warning*** This letter will be a fine example of yet another starry
eyed female fan (YASEFF)who has found that record that she'd always wanted all
her life and then got to meet said maker of that record. And
***Second Warning*** This letter is being written under the influence of Nestle
Peanut Butter Covered Pretzel's, ice cold coke and lack of sleep with a
mountain of jet lag thrown in....but without further adieu....
Austin, Nanci and a pile of bottlecaps- ripe for the tossin'....
>From the minute I touched down in Austin I felt as though I'd been there
before- whether from the wonderful descriptions or the poignant lyrics I've
sung along to- Austin is just like you think it's going to be and then, well..
then it *gets* better. It's green and alive and humid- but it's okay, because
it's Austin. Coming from a dry heat and going to a wet heat is quite an
experience and one I suggest everyone tries at least once. You'll go home with
completely different perspectives of weather and all the complaining about it
you do. :)
But still, Austin did feel familar to me- in the houses, the streets, the
friendly smiles of strangers- all of it made me feel at ease and at home. Here
was 6th and Congress....there was the Hole in The Wall... the Paramount... the
Shiner Boch signs alit in every other window....the cozy look of Amy's Ice
Cream Parlour...and above it all, the pure and pink shadow of the capitol
building- quiet in its majesty and its obvious status of pride and respect. It
was all here- in front of me- I was actually in Austin, readying myself for a
Nanci weekend and experience- one that was soon to be one of the best of my
life.
Meeting Nanci-Netters is always a pleasing experience and having a get together
at Frank and Shelly's made it
especially pleasant. What a haul of food!! What wonderful strawberries! The
exquisite company and warm feelings (not just from the weather!)we experienced
made the trip worth it, in and of itself. It's so lovely to put faces to names
and share hugs and handshakes (and a few Shiner's!) with people who enjoy the
same love of something as rare as Nanci's music. It makes you feel that all is
right with the world, at least for a little while of time. Even now,
remembering- my thoughts are touched with a smile of good laughter and good
times. Nanci *does* bring peace of mind- through her music and through her
fans.
It's one of the smaller miracles, but important just the same.
Eagerly awaiting for the concert to start, I was pleased to be sitting by so
many Netters-thankful to Steve Makarsky for being so determined to get good
seats, fortunate to realize that next to me was Sara Huizinga (she is the
definition of NICE!)...and happy to see that Mike C *did* make it to the show
and looked so spiffy in his suit and tie...I could go on and on about how
wonderful everything was- but you probably want to know about the actual
concert, right? :)
Nanci was a vision. As always. Always I am struck by her playfulness and
amazing grace as she takes the stage. And when she opens up that mouth to
sing...:::whoosh::: chill bumps. The orchestra was well played and the two
sounds were married together quite well- I had no doubt that this would be an
evening of pure musical enjoyment.
Tears formed in my eyes when she sang my favorite lyrics- those lyrics that
have always stood me still-have always given me a reason to continue- ("words
to live by"-indeed)....words I profoundly feel could have been written by me
(given the inclination to ever actually be that well written!)..words I feel
with my heart and soul... "I was the forest for love songs, the one who can't
love wrong, the one who won't fall but will still write it down- I'm the one
who will understand, who listens with pen in hand, everyone's shoulder- till
it's me who falls down...."
I've been feeling "grounded and rusty" here myself and so it's a pleasure to
hear Nanci sing these lyrics with such strength and faith. To still see the joy
in her face when she smiles at herself- at her own humanity.
The performance went by much too quickly. It seemed to move by in a blink of an
eye. And even the little mishaps- the sound not being just right, the mistep in
Late Night Grande Hotel, none of these things diminished my joy.
Nanci was in fine voice and the music was that of angels ascending to heaven-
in fact, I feel that when I make it into that Austin up in the sky, it will not
be Hosannas that are sung by the cherubs, but Gulf Coast Highway with full
symphony for back-up and our aNGel at the lead. Road to Aberdeen gave me
chillbumps and I
have yet to shake that voice, that amazing Griffith voice, out of my head. Or
the image of our Nanci- water goblet in hand, raising it to the sky and singing
in the voice of her father- loud, strong and full of life.
And breathtaking.
What happened after the concert is where the real magic took place and even
now, as I look over at the autographed postcard sitting on my desk, I have
trouble believing it. But I have witnesses, so it definitely took place, right?
I felt like Wendy in NeverNeverLand... sprinkle some fairy dust on me and I may
just fly away... suffice it to say, thanks very much in part to Sara H and her
partner, I was allowed to go backstage and get to meet our Miss Nanci. A gift I
will always cherish and always pull out to brighten my days- to see Nanci
interacting with others, to shake her hand and say even a few words to her was
more than any fan could ask for- to actually hear her play guitar and sing in a
room full of not even 20 people was a blessing that will *not* diminish as the
years go by, but will instead grow in golden tones and fond rememberances ...
everything will remain perfectly etched in my memory as being the best and most
beautiful.
When we came outside afterwards, I noticed the sky was clear from the earlier
rains and my head immediately travelled northward, up towards the moon- only
half there, but winking nonetheless. Bathed in a etheral light, the discussion
turned to moon rings and their meanings...but I knew it was because of Nanci
and because of the warm, positive feelings of all who were there- touched with
moonlight is the way I'll remember everyone ... aglow with happiness and joy.
And Music.
Christina "when's the next flight to Austin?" Myers
ps. Steve.... I have a nice surprise for you.... :)

Although the Austin Concert has already been covered quite well, I wanted to
add my 2 cents worth. I thought the concert was great. I saw her in London
twice on the OV2 tour and it would be a tough call on which one I enjoyed more,
particularly since I had the best seat in the house. It sounds like alot of us
were front row and center but I mean if Nanci would have stepped out from the
mic and walked forward, mine would have been the first seat she came to. The
concert was also special because she made a comment about my son (who was
sitting next to me) in the front row (the little person in the front row she
said) in her introduction to TWatW. She said to him, "Don't ever let your
Mommy take your french horn from you" referring to something she had said
earlier in the concert about her mom selling her french horn when she was a
kid. Anyways, it was cute, got a few laughs and made my son's night (he's 5
1/2). It seemed consistent with my perspective of Nanci that she would notice
a little kid in the front row. Also, he had walked up and put a rose on the
stage right before intermission.
One more observation was that she played both her Nanci signature guitar and
the blue Taylor during different songs throughout the concert, mostly the blue
Taylor. Are there any, more accomplished musicians than myself out there who
were at the concert, that picked up on why she changed back and forth. Was it
the difference in the mahogany(sig) and maple(blue) or was she using different
tunings. Just wondering if anyone knew.
Finally, I thought Nanci handled the little mistake with the words on LNGH
beatifully. As reported earlier, she came back with an acknowledgement of the
mistake with some humor. I believe the rest of the show came off perfect
except that it was just to short for me, but I guess that would always be the
case.

I want to thank Steve, Shelly, Kelly, Andy, Anna, Kenneth, and Christina
(hope I haven't missed anyone) for their terrific Austin reports. It sounds
like you all had a wonderful time! I also want to send a big "Cheers!" to
Christina (raising an imaginary Shiner Bock), whose post set my widdle heart
all aglow. Wow, what an experience!
So, all this Austin commotion has gotten me really excited about seeing Nanci
with the Atlanta symphony next month, and I don't even have a ticket yet. I
hope I make it, and I hope Nanci sings Road to Aberdeen! Has anyone started
making plans for an Atlanta get-together?

I ordered my ticket about two days ago and got Terrace Row AA ...I have
never been to Chastain Park so I am not real sure where that is, but
hopefully not too bad of a seat.
Does anyone know if cameras are allowed in there? I saw Nanci in Charlotte
with the travelling Newport show and cameras weren't allowed but once inside
security allowed people to get right in front of the stage for pictures. I
took a couple, but unfortunately screwed them up.
Yes(seconding Kellys question)....is anyone getting together for the show?
I will be making the trek alone from Columbia because none of my friends are
Nanci lovers like I am, so some friendly faces would be nice. Although now
that I think about it I have never seen any of you before. :)

Hey Y'all,
Just got my tickets for the Atlanta/Chastain show (can't wait--ditto on Road
to Aberdeen!) and if anyone is planning to go and has not gotten tickets yet,
they better get on with it, since my sources indicate it is close to being
sold out. As far as the Terrace, Todd, you should be in pretty good shape,
at least being in the center of the venue. There are boxes directly in front
of the stage, tables behind the boxes, then the three Terrace sections (we're
on the right side) and I think lawn seating behind that. Not a clue about
cameras, but I wouldn't count on it; if I find out anything different, will
let you know.
Haven't heard anyone else talking or planning a get-together but there should
be some places close to the park to gather beforehand. I live pretty far
north of the city and am totally undomestic but if folks want to get
together, I'm more than willing to see what might be a good, convenient spot.
Atlanta is notorious for mystery traffic jams at unusual hours, so somewhere
close by would probably be the best bet, to avoid any
"oh-my-gosh-what-do-you-mean-the road's-shut-down-for-three-hours" snafus
between getting together and getting to the concert.
This list has been very interesting over the last couple of weeks -- it's
killing me not to jump in but I'm trying to be disciplined and work some
deadlines. Yeeech!
Have to say, though, I find this line from "Fly By Night" strikes a cord, so
to speak:
"Oh, I never put a chain around your heart or tried to make you walk the line
for me--
Only a fool would want a heart that needs a chain to keep it resting here
beside of me, yeah!"
P.S. Reid - I loved the Fat Man/Little Boy soliloquy, but liked the follow-up
even better...
Cate, it's getting late and I'm starting to sprint, in Atlanta

Hi Everybody,
this is not a lyric per se but it certainly has influenced a whole lot of us
around here. I'm talking of course about the Nanci "Thank Yoooouuu!" which I
personally discovered for the first time on OFSE. I don't remember
consciously adopting it into my speech patterns but it somehow wormed it's
way in there. I remember one hysterical picnic with fellow nancinetters out
before a Nanci show at Wolftrap in Virginia when we all realised that it had
mysteriously become part of our linguistic makeup. The conversation went a
little like this.....
First Nancinetter: "Gosh this salad is delicious."
Second Nancinetter: "Thank Yooouu! It's my mother's recipe. That's a great
tee shirt!"
First Nancinetter: "Thank Yooouu, I printed it myself. Have some more wine!"
Second Nancinetter: "Thank Yooouu! Fill her up!"
Third Nancinetter: "Sit down here, there's plenty of room."
Newly Arriving Nancinetter: "Thank Yooouu, Anyone need a beer?"
Another 15 Nancinetters in unison: Thank Yooouu!!"
...........and so it went on all evening.
I think that it is such a sincere way of saying thank you that when you
really mean it and you are a Nanci fan it just comes out that way.

From: poetmuse@prodigy.net
there are many moments I can recall when I try to think of my "intiation" to
Nanci-dom and all it's wonderful
patterns...
Hearing Other Voices, Other Rooms for the first time- laying on my college dorm
room bed and feeling not so alone anymore as I listened to that gorgeous voice
sing "Across the Great Divide"....
Catching a glimpse of Nanci on Austin City Limits- I orginally kept the channel
there because of the Indigo Girls but fell half way into adoration when I heard
Nanci talk about how important it is to "find and use your own voice" when
going down the road of life...
Buying Late Night Grande Hotel because it reminded me of an old friend and
falling in love with the title track....because living alone is *all* I've done
(and do) well...
And finally... stumbling onto the Nanci-Net and getting to know all the
wonderful friends and fans there are out there in this madness...people who
truly do earn the right to be called- the nicest group of people on the net.
This list, probably more than anything else has kept my passion for Nanci alive
and strong.

Ron--this is one of my favorites, partly because I've been exiled from
New Orleans so long myself. Nanci has done it in concert with the BMO,
back on the 1988 tour. My impression is that she always plays one or
two "oldies" in her tours now, but which ones vary from tour to tour.
"Love at the 5 and Dime" seems to usually make the playlist, and I guess
for the OV2 tour "Wing and the Wheel." So, if you and she live long
enough, eventually you should get to hear Banks of the P. in concert.

Subject: NN: introduction to Nanci
From: Nina Gooch (nina-gooch@juno.com>
I heard Nanci the first time in Boston at an all-woman Folk Tree concert
in the fall of 1987 or so. We really went to hear Chris Williamson, one
of the big lesbian singer-songwriters who made such a huge impact in the
lesbian community in the 70's. We had no idea who this Nanci Griffith
person was who was also singing, and didn't much care til we got to hear
her. Then we were hooked!
We also heard Tracy Chapman the first time that night. That was
especially exciting because this set of concerts was really her first big
exposure. We sort of felt like we were part of history or something.
(The concert we saw was the second of two concerts, each with a
different line-up, and Tracy Chapman was then a local unknown who opened
the first concert and blew the audience away so completely they asked her
back the next night and suddenly became almost a household word in
Boston, even before her album came out.) Afterwards, especially after
her album came out, almost every lesbian in the city, single or not, had
a terrific crush on Tracy Chapman. Except me--much as I like Tracy's
music, I had a crush on Nanci!

Subject: NN: Lucy Kaplansky at Morgan's in Monterey, Ca 1999/5/21
From: jalvo@mbay.net (John Alvord)
This review has some Nanci Griffith content... Denice Franke, Nina
Gerber, and Lucy Kaplansky all have worked with NG in the past.
...............
Well, it was a pretty good night. (forgive the Tori Amos reference)
Anne and I got there while the sound check was under way. Lucy was
doing bits of David Massengill's Fairfax County to get the sound
board setup right. Whew! I spoke to her and she turned to a friend and
mentioned she had seen us at a house concert in Northern NJ about a
year ago. (Of course I had seen her in Cry Cry Cry and a solo concert
at the Emelin Theater between times).
Denice Franke opened. She and Lucy both backed up Nanci Griffith at
different times. Denice was quieter, softer, more repetitive than
Lucy. I enjoyed the last song Lowlands most.
I didn't keep a set list... I find that distracts me.. keeps me from
enjoying the moment. Lucy was in a happy mood. Denice is a LOT taller
than her and the mike stand initially towered over her head. Someone
from the back shouted "stand up" as she struggled to lower the mike.
Lucy flushed happily, a wicked grin.
Lucy began with two songs and then Nina Gerber joined her. You could
tell right away that it was going to be a special night. Lucy had an
agenda and that was to hear Nina play with her. Repeated calls to turn
up Nina's guitar (in the monitor) and turn her guitar down. It was
funny to see Morgan Christopher (owner and sound man this night) work
to make things right.
I'd never heard Nina Gerber live before. She is a large powerful
woman. She played with Kate Wolf for many years (Kate died in 1986)
and plays Kate Wolf's guitar to this day. A special magic emanates
from that guitar.
They hadn't practiced. Nina would listen to a verse and then start
tastefully adding in licks here and there. Some of the songs she knew
well. Once when Lucy was working on her guitar and chatting a bit too
long, Nina started a sharp rock n'roll riff, like Cheap Trick Live at
Budokan sort of thing. Several times the audience burst into applause
during a song... and Lucy would have her take another chorus. She used
an electronic bow once, and a brass guitar slide. It was an amazing
and magical night of music and I felt Kate Wolf's presence blessing
the event.
Lucy did a lot of the songs from Ten Year Night. Also Scorpion and
Flesh and Bone from earlier albums. Lucy sang strongly. I was less
aware of her powerful guitar playing than I usually am. She seemed
very very happy and pleased the whole evening. Toward the end, she
talking about seeing the entire crowd swaying as one to the beat. She
had never seen that before. Someone from the crowd yelled out "Let's
all go home together!" and she laughed and giggled.
Ten Year Night was powerful. It was better than the album vocally.
Lucy takes liberties with the vocal parts. Like some jazz singers, she
sings over/around/under the beat. Sometimes she whispers a word or
two.The crowd knew the songs and seemed to enjoy her liberties. Early
on they were clapping to the beat as a song started and she suddenly
stopped and said she couldn't concentrate, so please stop. One Good
reason had the usual introduction, but I couldn't hear the sadness she
said was present. I missed Richard Shindell on the chorus.
One of the covers was Broken Things, that had the crowd holding their
breath. She didn't completely know the lyrics and read off a sheet at
times. She described how the song hadn't been recorded yet, so "I HAD
to befriend them first" rolling her eyes. And how she had just
recently received a tape of the song. Another cover was a Gram Parsons
song. Great material.
The concert went too quickly though it stretched to nearly 90 minutes.
After thunderous applause she came back on. People called out for
songs all over the room. My wife Anne cried out that Nina should do a
solo. Lucy's eyes lit up, she looked at Nina, then Lucy stuck her
thumb up (OK!) and sat down. Nina did "the only song I know" (which is
hard to believe) and the crowd was treated to an elegant confection, a
tumbling waterfall of notes. Afterwards someone asked about Nina's
solo album and she said it would a short one!
Finally, Lucy and Nina did "Goodnight" by Cliff Eberhart from her
first album The Tide and it was a perfect choice. Most of us in the
audience would dream of her that night, as the song commanded.

http://newyork.citysearch.com/E/E/NYCNY/0012/69/21/cs1.html If you click
on the Location: Central Park SummerStage link in the top left corner it
will take you to a page that gives excellent directions for finding the
Rumson Field, and there is even a like from there to MapQuest's maps. I am
told that they do not allow you to bring your own food and drink, not even
water -they sell Designer Water-- so bring money :-). A gathering of
NanciNetters before the show is in the works: My Manhatten contact has
suggested : " Dallas BBQ, 72d on the West Side. Between Columbus and CPW.
Cheap. Then walk into the park and over to the East Side and there's the
venue." He adds," tell them not to go to the Dallas BBQ on the East Side. "

I was introduced to Nanci in 1990 at the age of 25 by my first "official
date" after a very painful and unexpected divorce. "Storms" was the cd
and most every song rang true for my pain and my experience. Especially,
YMTLAT and..."there are those who can't love right, I just can't love
wrong"... I dumped the date, but ran out and purchased every cd I could
get my hands on. Her music was the best therapy my time and money could
ever buy.
I, too, attended the AWESOME concert in Austin on Monday (hi, Paul Greer
- my concert neighbor) and tried to explain to a friend who rode to
Austin with me the magnitude of impact that Nanci's music has had on me
throughout the years. As a very young "silver throated wife trapped in
a golden cage" Nanci represents FREEDOM! And pain, and lonliness, and
joy in knowing and loving just yourself, and sorrow from knowing and
loving just yourself, but mainly freedom from oppression. So with her
music as my constant passenger seat companion, I'd have to say with
great nostalgic affection that my anthem is:
"She drives a Coupe DeVille but her heart rides still in that Ford
Econoline"...
By the way, I've been happily remarried for 7 years and my three year
old daughter is a budding Nanci fan, and her favorite line is(mainly
because of the great skill it takes for her to say it - and with extreme
pride!)...he's sitting on his sofa, he's looking for his supper,
wonderin' what's become of me...
She's a woman after my own heart:)

Funny Vicki (and Cary!)- that's exactly the line and the song I listened to
over and over again when my marriage was splitting up. In fact, I think I make
mention of it, no I know I do, in my debut blathering post to the NanciNet -
Geez, that must have been 2 years ago now!! That whole album, in fact, had me
bawlin' awl the time, that and Emmy Lou's Wrecking Ball.
And I think I'm still getting killed by it, or if I'm not, I'm doing my best to
stay away from it so I don't.
I guess now subscribing to:
"But it made me strong to be on my own
It never did me no harm to live all alone"
At least at the moment.

Hi fellow Nancifans,
Hello from a long-time lurker, first time poster to Nancinet...I just wanted
to add my story of how I discovered the music of our beloved Nanci. It was
1990, I was 21 and a sophomore art student, aka, a "starving artist." I was
driving to class in my first car, a beat up 1972 Plymouth Valiant "Scamp"
(I'm not making this up!), which of course, only had AM radio!! There was a
local folk station that I could pick up if I adjusted the old knobs JUST
so....one morning as I dodged traffic and pedestrians on the streets of
Boston, I heard the voice of an angel. I struggled to tune in the
station...it was "Once in A Very Blue Moon" from OFSE. I was mesmerized,
paralyzed in my car in the school parking lot...couldn't move until the song
was over--I was even late for class because I HAD to know who this
incredible voice belonged to. I went out the very next day and bought a
used copy of the OFSE tape (didn't have a CD player yet--I was starving,
remember!). OFSE still stands as my favorite CD of all time by any artist,
to which all others pale in comparison. I was moved by Nanci's music that
day, and I still am.
'Thank you kindly' for listening,
Donna Marie

Hi,
Just a reminder to those who are going to the Atlanta show, Nanci
will be in Birmingham at the City Stages Music Fest, with the BMO on
Friday June 18th. It's hard to pass up a chance to see her two
nights in a row! A whole host of great musicians are playing. David
Wilcox plays a couple of hours after Nanci, and Maura O'Connell
performs in the early evening on Sunday. Weekend passes are $25.00,
single day tickets are $18.00. Check the web site for details
www.citystages.org.
