Hi folks: I just received my copy of UPOToo and want to thank everyone
involved from the artists to those who copied it and organized. I
loved hearing these versions of Nanci's songs by fellow followers of
our hero. It is a a beautiful expression of our appreciation for this

it.

Another obnoxious FAQ-thanks for putting up with me so well. Is there a way
to get the British version of the MCA Years here in America? Hearing
everyone rave about how great the song is really makes me need to get the CD
if at all possible.

I'm with Tracy, where can we get this version? I checked all my regular
places I purchase cd's today, and none of them list this version. Did
she by chance cover this song when she was on anyone else's albums, if
we can not find hers?

Might be tough, it has been out of print for several years. Also, be
warned, a package identical to the US version, without the extra tracks,
is available throughout the rest of Europe. UK is the only version with
the extra songs. Simply buying an import version will not get you
there.
I have seen some on ebay occasionally in the $40 plus range.

Subject: NN: The Best Of Nanci Griffith
From: GV (gvallest@online.no>
There are as Bill said similar issues of this available in Europe.
The UK issue (19 tracks), with Tumble And Fall and Road To Aberdeen is entitled
'The Best Of Nanci Griffith'. Catalog number MCD 10966.
The other one (18 tracks), without these two tracks (and some other different
tracks as well) is entitled
'The MCA Years - A Retrospective'. Catalog number MCD 10914
Both can still be found in Europe for as low prices as 10$ for the 'Best Of',
and 12$ for 'The MCA Years'. The normal CD price in this country is approx. 22$
Hope this helps.

I recently tried to order the UK "Best of..." CD from www.cdparadise.com,
a W.H. Smith online site in the UK. Even though they list the CD, they
reported that it is no longer available and cancelled the order. I also
checked on www.hmv.co.uk and they don't list the CD at all.
On another note, does anyone know of a good record/CD store (new and/or
used) in Dublin, Ireland? Particularly one that has a good folk section.
My daughter is in Ireland in June and I'd like to send her with a wish
list. Thanks for any help on this.
Incidentally, Nanci is appearing at the Edmonton Folk Festival on August
8, her first time in Canada since 1990 (when she had to cancel her
appearance in Edmonton). Never having seen her in concert, I'm very
excited needless to say.

I know that the words are not Nanci's, but every

Subject: NN: Fat "trash" and other such trash
From: Patti Schrull (gblauser@sover.net>
Well, here we go again! ;-) Responding to this thread a little late,
because of an erroneous disconnect from my server...(I now have a free
month :-) I have a question regarding the "fat man" discussion...first of
all, can we ever assume to know what a writer meant by a song, a line, or a
word in a song? I don't feel confident in doing so. I am thinking that we
are all just having a fun discussion and aren't really judging anyone for
the assumed judgement of another? Right, I thought so! :-)
With that said, I will return to my original question. I am wondering why
some people are so much more offended by the adjective "fat" than they are
by the adjective "skinny". Is the word "fat" more judgemental, and the word
"skinny" just descriptive? I somehow don't think it is meant to be.
However, with society ever pointing to the joy, happiness and success to be
had exclusively by those possessing the
ideal slender body weight, I wonder not at the hang up we have with the
word "fat". Being "fat", for those that fall into the trap is admitting
defeat, failure and worse, a life of no worth! If you ask me, that is where
the "trash" in all this is...Are we not as a world continuously falling
into the traps of deception, whether it be judging a person or a people by
their color, weight, religious beliefs, income level, beauty or lack
thereof? I have my own personal interpretation of the songs I like, and for
me this is what I hear in the song "Hard Life". When we fall into the lies,
we make life hard, for us and all those around us.
Okay, that is enough exercise for my brain today!!! Remembering the purpose
of this holiday, while celebrating the beginning of my favorite time of the
year - Happy Summer Everybody!

I agree with Patti......only from a side angle! I believe that a song or
story can often times and does have different meanings to each member of the
audience. To break it down into hidden or covert ideas lurking behind the
words would still only result in multiple conclusions based on the audience
members intrepretation once again. So why not just enjoy - or not- for ones
own self?
Also from the side view......yes we can de-compose the words of a song into
nothing but politically correct verses! My guess is that we would end up
with an instrumental when we got done - with everyones ideas on what is or
is not correct placed into action!
For me....I like "It's a Hard Life" just like it is - I gather from it what
I wish and make that a part of me!

For those of you who have heard this story many years ago when I first
joined NNet, BBWMTD (Before Bill was Married to DawnMarie) ::grins::,
forgive me repeating it. After Somer's comments about her daughter and
having just met her mom this weekend (what a great woman your mom is
Somer!), I feel like coming out of lurkdom.
I had heard "Love at the Five and Dime" and liked the song. But it was
"It's a Hard Life" that truly impacted me. Enough so that when I was
pregnant I'd listen to it to help to remind me how to raise this child when
he/she arrived. And so when he came, I named him from the song, Seamus.
When he hears his song, he says, "This is MY song huh?" We are now talking
about why I chose his name and why the song is important. It's a story that
is becoming part of his HIS-STORY.
Kenn thank you for your wonderful concert report, it makes up for how much
you were missed on my most recent road trip.
Thanks to everyone who post here, you sure make me smile often enough.

In response to mike barrett, my love affair with Nanci began in about 1987
when I went to see irish singer Mary Coughlan at The Mean Fidler in
Harlesden, North London. I had cycled part of the way there and having
arrived I waited with pint of Guinnes in hand for Mary's set to begin.
The Mean Fidler is a small intimate Irish style pub and the room was packed.
I heard a track which was haunting and beautiful, with the most
distinguishable voice. I was caught and the dj announced later that it was
by Nanci Griffith. I did not know what the track was called but I started
to buy Nanci's albums, Little Love Affairs being the first. I was searching
for that track I had heard. After having purchased everything I could get
my hands on I finally recognised it and tracked it down so to speak ('Scuse
the pun) - Lone Star State of Mind on her Storms album.
In answer to question 13 (I think that's the right one) - undoubtedly Gulf
Coast Highway.
London has been experiencing the most extraordinary weather. Extremely hot
sunny days followed by grey, sultry, storm ridden days. Electrical storms
of immense force. Strange times indeed.

Interesting stuff up for auction. The B F Deal Sampler is sealed and mint!
Where's it been for the last twenty years?! And the listed "price" is
$29.99; wouldn't it be nice to think of picking it up for that.....but in
the real world, what's it going to go for?
I seem to recall that the AAA Sampler went for something like $700 a little
while back - so the B F Deal has got to be over a thousand hasn't it?

Actually, the B.F. Deal Sampler surprisingly turns up in sealed condition
more often than you might think. Last year the same dealer sold six of them
(all sealed) for $50 each but not through ebay. Guess he's now learned
where the big money is and you can't blam,e him for selling it for what
someone is willing to pay! The AAA Flyer at $700 was a fluke with two deep
pocket bidders having a battle against each other. Just a week ago the same
disc went for $52 on ebay. I just picked one up for $25 (not on ebay)...
anyone want to give me $700 for it ;-)
Be aware that if you are patient you can find just about any item for a
reasonable price but probably not on ebay. I'll admit to having gotten a
few bargains there (but they seem to be rare) and I've paid a lot more than
I really should've for a few items also. On ebay there is always going to
be stiffer competition for an item so the price is likely to be high. For
the most part ebay is a seller's market. I don't want to sound overly
negative as I am an ebayoholic myself.
In a local shop I found two Nanci items last week that were missing from
my collection. The total cost was $12, so bargains are still out there.
I've helped a few Nancinetters find items and they in turn have found some
goodies for me. I prefer this kind of trading with other fans of the
music... and there are some dealers out there that sell items at very fair
set prices. Part of the thrill of collecting is to hunt down these sources.
If I could find the ultimate collectible store and order everything I wanted
instantly, I don't think things would be nearly as fun... plus I'd be very
broke... err that is even more broke than I am now!

of weeks back...

Kate Rusby is fabulous. She has a new CD, "Sleepless" which is not yet

Yes, I have.....I also like a female American singer called Nanci

Subject: NN: Bleecker Street and Nanci
From: "David Steere" (dsteere@sil.si.edu>
One should cheer loudly when current singer/songwriters visit great
songs of the past. We need much more of this. Nanci set a recent
standard with OTHER VOICES, OTHER ROOMS and OTHER VOICES, TOO. So, it
is with some regret that I find myself largely disappointed by the
ambitious new release, BLEECKER STREET: GREENWICH VILLAGE IN THE 60'S.
The basic problem is that little of interest has been added in these
new interpretations. Another problem may lie in the rather
unimaginative arrangements. Generally, the songs on this disk make me
long for the original and/or other older versions. There are,
however, a couple of notable exceptions:
Jonatha Brooke on Paul Simon's "Bleecker Street" (gorgeous and unusual)
Marshall Crenshaw doing the Byrd's arrangement of Dylan's "My Back
Pages" (exciting, Crenshaw recalls the Dylan phrasing but uses his
own, much better, voice)
Iris DeMent on her "half" of the Loudon Wainwright/DeMent duet of
"Pack Up Your Sorrows" (if only, Iris had sung this alone!)
Cry, Cry, Cry on Tom Paxton's "Last Thing on My Mind" (Of course,
Kaplansky and Shindell and Williams have shown how good they are at
reinterpreting on their "Cry Cry Cry" cd).
The above four artists bring something new and wonderful to the very
familiar, much-loved songs. But, the rest of the performances seem
middling or imitative, at best. Much less successful are:
Chrissie Hind on Tim Buckley's "Morning Glory"
Curtis Stigers on Tom Rush's "No Regrets"
Ron Sexsmith on Tim Hardin's "Reason to Believe"
Jules Shear on John Sebastian's "Darling Be Home Soon"
Patty Larkin on Fred Neil's "Everybody's Talkin'"
John Cale and Suzanne Vega on Leonard Cohen's "So Long, Marianne"
Paul Brady on Chet Powers' "Let's Get Together"
I wish I'd like this cd more.
