OK, I know some people will drop dead upon seeing my name here in a post...
> Does anyone have some 411 on whether she has been officially pronounced
> "cured" or "a survivor" or anything?
I had the good fortune of chatting with Nanci for a few minutes after her
May show here in Austin, and I asked her how her health was -- she told me
she was completely through with all treatment for the thyroid cancer and
was pronounced clean and healthy. It was wonderful to hear her sounding so
positive and upbeat!
In other news, I'm de-lurking to tell everyone that I've posted photos from
former-list-manager Mark Ferguson's recent wedding to Sherry Pearson. They
met because of the NanciNet, so I thought it appropriate to mention here.
Go to:
http://www.grantguerrero.com/
Follow the links to "Recent Portraits and Wedding Photos," and then to
"Recent Weddings," and you'll find them there. It was a small, private
affair (four guests), so don't take offense that you weren't invited...
Now back to being swamped with wedding work. Maybe I'll pop up in another
year or so... Oh, hey, I know it's too late, but a cable network called
Ovation was running the Scottish BBC "Transatlantic Sessions" series here
in the U.S.; I caught a number of shows with Nanci. They seem to have
stopped for now, but check your listings in case it comes back.

Wow!
The post from David Grant was like a triple treasure. First we find out our
fellow Kerrvert is alive and well and taking more pictures (Hello David).
Then we hear that this newsgroup has been matchmaker yet again (Congrats to
Mark and Sherry! I think I suspected this when we all met 3 years ago in
Kerrville. Did you know it too?).
And of course, the best news, Nanci and her health. I am glad that she is
well, and amazed that she did it all while maintaining her type of schedule.
Radiation is week after week, every day and seems to drag on forever.
A mention of the Nancinet was made on "Across The Great Divide" on
KPFA-Berkeley last Sunday. Robbie Osmond, the host of the show was
mentioning a 1995 string of this newsgroup he ran across when he searched the
Web for the title of his show, for which the song by Kate Wolf was written.
He was amused that the Netters had personalized the song for Nanci's
motivations and thoughts. He was not too happy that we had adopted Kate's
song as reflecting Nanci's personality. I guess he hasn't found the Jackson
Browne/Nanci matchmaker thread yet. ( Ducking>

Must add my $.02's worth here. Being a fellow Kerrvert of the original
kind, my best surprised wishs also go out to Mark and Sherry - that makes 2
now from that era! Way to go!
And "hello to Deb"!

Hello John,
The Dixie Chicks, Beth Nielsen Chapman, Kim Ritchey, and Mary Chapin
Carpenter! What a great lineup! (I don't know Raul Malo.)
Speaking as one who, worried about tight finances, missed a chance recently
to see Nanci in nearby Austin TX, is still envious of events in the UK,
happy listening!

Raul Malo? Isn't that the guy who's girlfriend you were hitting on when
we ran into them at that little bar in Nashville, John? (grin>
Seriously, Malo is the front man for the Mavericks and has joined Nanci
on stage several times. Even recorded the international version of
"From A Distance" with her.

I don't want to debate anyone, but I love the man. I want to say so out loud
too. I love him for Something Fine, Rock Me on the Water...countless anthems
of my youth. I love him for the voice that's so thick the words just drip
from it. I love him for finding the words when I can't say what I need to.
No matter what, he'll always be the one who encouraged this dancer to pay
attention to the open skies and I'll love him for that until the day I die.
I mean no disrespect to anyone who disagrees.
Best to all,

The weekend of July 4th I'll be attending the annual High Sierra Music
Festival. I only know of 3 of the bands that'll be there so I'd appreciate
it if some Nanci lovers would review the list of performers and let me know
if you recognize or recommend any of them.

They finally came and towed away my '64 Ford Econoline today.
No husband on the bumper, just a KPIG sticker. Where would I
be in times like these, without the songs that Nanci wrote?
My favorite radio station is playing my request right now!

Subject: NN: Wishes DO come true!
From: Kaby33@aol.com
Seems like it was just a year or so ago that folks were saying Nanci would no
longer tour. Most of the talk was regarding her health, her writing books,
and about the disappointingly short sets she was doing when she was in shows
with other folks like the Chieftains.
I fell in love with her music back in '89, and I've only seen Nanci perform
live two times. Then I became a poor college student for the second time in
my life and missed all of her Atlanta shows since '91. When I thought I
would never see my most favorite artist perform again, I was just sick. My
heart ached to be in her audience just one more time..... a final farewell of
sorts.
Then a miracle occurred. After being miserable about the situation for over
a year, I heard that Nanci was coming to perform in Atlanta once again. Even
though she'll be performing with a symphony, I am overjoyed knowing that I
will be sitting in her audience, once again, this coming Saturday night.
My whole being can hardly wait to "sing one for sister!"

Subject: NN: Lucy Kaplansky Joins the Crowded Field
From: "David Steere" (dsteere@sil.si.edu>
I hope the "caretaker of the contests" will consider expanding the
field this year from the 10 best of 1999 to at least the 15 best or
better yet the 20 best. After all, it's not even the end of June and
extraordinary albums keep making themselves known. I know I'm a bit
late (due primarily to a lost package in the mail) but I must sing
praises for Lucy Kaplansky's TEN YEAR NIGHT. I've long been fond of
her non-traditionally beautiful voice and wonderful ability to
harmonize (witness her work with Nanci). Her contribution to Cry,
Cry, Cry is quite exceptional. TEN YEAR NIGHT seems her best effort
yet--very strong on singing and harmony (Gorka, Shindell, Kimball) but
unexpectedly wonderful in the songwriting. One beautiful, original
song after another, generally low-key but always moving.
Three songs, especially, deserve the highest praise. Many good
songs have been penned about the nomadic, frustrating life of the
singer/songwriter. Lucy's "Promise Me" joins the very best of those
(including many by Nanci herself), making the issues new:
"Listen for me when I'm away. I'll be singing to you."
"Just You Tonight" celebrates the special connection and understanding
in the simplest terms:
"It's just you, you tonight. And the music you heard in me somehow."
Best of all is the title tune. I still get goosebumps from it, feel
the wash of strong emotions and simply cannot but move around the room
and across the floor everytime I play "Ten Year Night." It's a
musical catharsis:
"Open your eyes and look at me 'cause I have and hold this love for
you. Before this ten year night is through, I'm telling you, take it
from me..."
Personal love songs simply don't get any better. Three cheers for
Lucy.
David
