Sometimes we're (or at least I am) a little slow to notice things. Just
tonight, I finally noticed that Alison Krauss' song "Looking In the Eyes
of Love" was written by our own 'moonpier' Tricia Walker! Great song! Do
you have any songs on her new disc, "Forget About It", Tricia?
Early word that I'm hearing about "Forget About It" is that it may be so
good that it will become her biggest disc yet. We shall see (due Aug 3).
And, btw, with all the N-N talk of Jerry Douglas, for any of you who
don't already know, in addition to all his busy session work, Jerry
Douglas is also now a "permanent" member of Union Station.

Evening, All: If it's not too late to throw in my 2 cents for
underrated songs... How about "Ghost in the Music," "Last of the True
Believers," and "More Than a Whisper"...
Cheers...

Bill Lavery told us:
(((Did you see there was also the VHS of OVOR Too for the
same date>>>
Does anyone know if we in the UK will able to watch this?
Also, I don't know if this has been mentioned but I see that
Guy Clark's absolutely classic albums Old #1 and Texas Cookin'
are available on one CD. I saw it in Tower records in London
at the weekend for #6.99 (about 11 dollars). This is excellent
value for money indeed. I don't know if it's true but I'm sure
someone said that these two albums are out of print in the US,
so this is as good a reason for coming to London as any!

Well....technically those albums are out of print stateside. The deal
with Sugarhill expired.
However, I believe they are wholly contained on RCA's "Essential.." CD.
I don't have everything in front of me so maybe somebody else can verify
this.
On this topic, a little gentle spam here, we have a marvelous Guy Clark
biography written with Guy's cooperation. He even ordered twenty copies
from us. Written by the same duo in the UK that did one on Nanci last
year.
Oh yeah, this is not available at bookstores. They were not able to
strike a deal with any distributors yet, so in the meantime we have an
exclusive.

The "Essential.." CD contains the whole of "Old No.1", the track
listing being a reversed A side\B side so the album starts with
'Texas 1947' and track 10 is 'That Old Time Feeling'.
The second half of the CD contains 8 of the 10 tracks from "Texas
Cookin' ". The tracks missing are 'It's About Time', and 'Good To
Love You Lady', these being replaced with the single release of
'Fools For Each Other' and the previously unreleased 'Don't Let The
Sunshine Fool You'.

I got hold of a copy of this book, titled "Songbuilder - The Life and
Music of Guy Clark", and just could not put it down. The insight
into Guy's songs\mini masterpieces is wonderfully illuminating and
splendidly recounted by the authors. If you are a fan of Guy Clark,
or of the Texas singer-songwriter genre in general, this book is a
must!!

So what are you folks waiting for, get your orders in now!
BTW: As I'm about to send this, I've got "The Randall Knife" (Dublin
Blues version) playing in my headphones. I promise you, music
just does not get much better than this! And I'm sure Nanci would
wholly agree.
Bye for now,
Colin Walton

Hey guys! I am finally learning to play the guitar & I have discovered that it
is so much more difficult than it looks! (or either I just plain
stink!!),,sigh!
: ) Anyway, I was wanting to know if anyone can tell me where I can find the
chords for "More Than A Whisper" & "Workin' In Corners". I have found some
others but just not these two. I would really appreciate the help!
Thanks!

And don't forget "One Of These days" - which come to think of it is also a
good selection for the "Getting Older" list - " middle aged couple with
silver hair and on cold winter nights this love we share is still a hundred
and two in the shade". Nice - a contender for the old Lines To Live By as
well?

From: "jenny.frog" (jenny.frog@virgin.net>
Hi,
well, i was about to hit the sack (i'm just little, ya know?) when i saw
this.....
(.(snip>....is such a moving song as is "Toronto Rain."
When i heard 'toronto rain' i was completely stilled. chilled, stopped.
it's hard to put into words exactly what it is about the song that just
makes you feel, well...cold as the toronto rain, i guess. you realise at
the end of the song that you haven't breathed all the way thorugh, and
then let out a huge sigh and rush for the rewind button. maybe because
it's so simple, but it's so totally honest. teh rythyms of the lines
rock backwards and forwards and seem as if they're taking you with them.
this was broadcsast in, what, '85 (god, i was still in my crib!), but
nanci's voice sounds like it did when it was telling us the true stories
of 'flyer'...it's clear and....why isn't this on an album?? mind you,
maybe 'producing' it would spoil it.
wHat about more than a whisper??? i used to have that song on repeat all
through the night....
luv jenny*, there's nothing quite as cold as this glasgow rain.....

I've been laying out in the back garden in 80 degree heat listening to
"Return Of The Grievous Angel" the tribute to Gram Parsons. Having read
what all my esteemed friends out there had to say I decided to bite the
bullet and buy the cd. On first impressions it is interesting, but not
overwhelmingly brilliant. To be honest if I want to hear these songs I'll
put on "GP" and "Grievous Angel" and if I want to listen to Lucinda,
Gillian, Whiskeytown, Wilco and Steve Earle then I'll pull out their cd's
and play them. Undoubtedly the best track, in my opinion, is the Rolling
Creekdippers take on "In My Hour Of Darkness", Buddy Miller and his wife,
Julie really shine here alongside the other husband and wife combination
of Mark Olson and Victoria Williams. I still can't really see the point
of these tribute cd's, but if Gram sells a million (fat chance) through
this, or Gillian and Lucinda begin to dominate the cd sales on the planet
then I'll be happy!!!!!

>I still can't really see the point of these tribute cd's
A couple of brilliantly talented musicians we know and love offered up the
wisdom that, "Songs need new voices to sing them in places they've never
been sung in order to stay alive." One of them used to sing with Gram and
produced the second GP tribute.
Musically we are richer for efforts like Other Voices, Other Rooms I and
II;Treasures Left Behind; Step Inside This House; Mermaid Avenue . . . . .
and I bless all the people who brought songs to me through these records
that I would otherwise not likely have heard, enjoyed, sung, played, and
passed along to someone else. These labours of love are readily
distinguished from back to the bank projects.

hello all you crazy nanci fans...been on the list forever and am finally
breaking my silence. i don't have regular access to e-mail anymore, my old
employer was kind enough to let me keep a key so i could remain on this
list. i only get here once a week or so....sometimes i want to write, but
by the time i read the list, you are on to other topics.
my first intro to nanci was in '87...a friend worked at a theater where
nanci was appearing. the concert did not sell out (can you imagine...only
1400 seats?) so the employees were offered comps. i had not heard of nanci,
but i am not one to pass up a concert, especially a free one, so off i
went....little did i know that it would change my life. needless to say, i
was hooked from the first note. as one who has difficulty expressing myself
and my feelings clearly, nanci has been a savior, cheap therapy that i will
have access to forever!!
i too have seen nanci close to 20 times....usually free and usually from
the first 5 rows. you see, i got a job at that same theater and worked
there for 7 years. i became friends with the woman who booked the
concerts....i always knew in advance when she was coming to town. and she's
been here a lot...i'm confused as to why the twin cities have been left out
of this particular tour, especially since we have 2 really kickin'
orchestras. i have been lucky enough to meet and talk to nanci on 3
different occasions. i swapped souvenir t-shirts with her twice and had my
picture taken with her the other time. she truly was gracious, funny, and
cute as a button. i know, i know....i am very lucky.
don't want to write a year's worth at one time. thanks for all of your
insights, recommendations, sometimes ridiculous arguments(!), and all
around nanci obsessivesness....you all rock!!
