Hey all-

Hope it's not too late to submit an idea about the
which-records-to-go-on-the-hat question. I was thinking, one should
definitely be Buddy Holly, probably Well All Right or this new song she just
did; what's it called again????????

As for the other, I was thinking maybe some influence of hers that's totally
different-sounding from the Crickets; that way it would be like, a rock
influence and a folk influence coming together into her musical style. How
about TV Zandt's "Tecumseh Valley"??? We know from the OVOR video, and live
introductions to the song, how much of an impression it made on her when she
first heard it, with her middle name being Carolina and all...just a thought

Isn't it about time we stopped talking about this and just DID it???
Almost a whole month has gone by since the first e-mail I received about it.
Ok, there's a guy who lives in LA and works in Disneyland (George? Sorry,
can't remember the name). Send me a beanie with her name on it (Nanci with
an "i") and I will find a couple of old 45's and figure out how to fashion
them on there. After that, I will send it on the Shawn Kimbo (just 'cause he
seems to be "communication central" and he can affix an appropriate NanciNet
card with our logo on it), and someone who is going to attend an upcoming
concert can give it to her. I won't be seeing her until December 2nd in
Santa Rosa, which is quite a ways off, or I would thrillingly do it myself.
If we don't get off the pot here, someone else is going to beat us to it,
unless they already have....

Hey, Anne --

I'll be happy to do the card, but I don't think Nanci will be anywhere
near me, so maybe someone who's going to see her soon can speak up.
That way you can send the hat to them and I'll send them the card and
we'll eliminate the middle man (me!).

Warm Regards,

I think a little confusion has developed about how Nanci described the hat.
When I heard her tell it she said she wanted to take the ears off a Mickey
Mouse beanie and attach a 45 record atop the hat so it could spin, like a
little propeller would. She didn't describe replacing the MM ears with 45s
broken in half.

Was that you Bill L. who posted about having 45s in your store? Do you have
"Well, All Right," "Whiter Shade of Pale," or a suitable Beatles song in
your inventory?

   From: Reid Mitchell (reidmitchell@yahoo.com>

Hey, folks, be kind. Nanci doesn't always hold rehearsals for the
guitarists who play with the BMO on the road; just throws them in the
lion's den. I heard Frank Christian played electric with her once and
he was awful; two weeks later he was more than fine with the same
material. (He'd been playing the pentatonic scale against her stuff
which I can tell you just doesn't work); besids we all know Frank is a
great guitar player. And remember that everybody is in the BMO has to
earn a living, so often an individual member maybed be booked to play
another gig before Nanci sets up her schedule; that's why Lancio didn't
go out on the Newport Festival Tour and Nanci had to use Frank. (I
think Doug was touring with Patty Griffin). So while I didn't hear
this guitar player myself and maybe he/she really is as awful of one of
us just said, but one show doesn't definitively prove his/her
terribleness.

A "45 beanie", propeller style, would be even easier to fashion. Get me the
hat; Shawn and I are on it.

   Date: Wed, 28 Jul 1999 06:14:12 -0800

I had a few 16 rpm records when I was a kid...they were things I got
from cereal box offers and were usually non musical...sound effects
records and such...one was the sounds of rockets being fired including
all the control room chat...(Hey I was a kid, I liked that sort of
stuff)
I don't think 16 rpm was used widely for music, because the slower the
record turns, the lower the sound quality...because the groove has to
hold all its information in a much smaller space...Ever notice that
your 45's actually sounded better than your albums?
This is similar to "headroom" on tape machines...a cassete tape is only
an eighth of an inch wide ant moves at a little more than an inch a
second so there's not much room at all for the music information to be
stored...in fact cassettes wouldn't be listenable at all if it weren't
for Dolby and other noise reduction technology... A big two inch wide
tape in a recording studio turning at 30 inches per second has all the
room in the world and sounds WONDERFUL...it's still the standard for
making master tapes even with all the digital boom, though that may
change soon.

This is true. They were used mostly for albums that came under the category
of "Spoken Word."

The guitarist at the concert in Saratoga who has made several people so
upset must have been a fill-in. The guitarist at the House of Blues in LA
several days earlier was quite good, and certainly was in no need of sheet
music.

I don't think we need to fear for the future of the BMO.

The guitarist at the San Diego show was good as well (I believe his name
was Chaz something). Tho he was no Doug Lancio when it came down to "Not My
Way Home"...but as Nanci had said Lancio played the most beautiful guitar
solo ever played. But as I said, this new guitarist was quite good. He was
not using any sheet music...at least not that I could see...and I was in
the second row...so we had a very good view of the stage. ;) Guess that's
all folks.

Back to wonderful world of lurkdom,

No it wasn't distracting at all...I was there to see Nanci and she was dead
center from me. Plus, I was enjoying watching the musicians I've known and
loved for many years! But as I said I thought he was quite good...but still
sounded a bit 'new'. It takes awhile for someone to get into the groove
with other musicians (or anything else for that matter)...especially since
the others have been playing together for many years.

I even seem to remember everyone was lookin at the words to this one
song...I don't remember which song it was but it was new to them I think.
And Nanci forgot a few words to the beginning of a verse of Wall of Death.
Even Mary Chapin Carpenter forgot some of the words to "I Feel Lucky" when
I saw her in San Diego. Nobody's perfect. =)

Ciao,

Yes, that IS the name of the guitarist which played in Saratoga! I seem to
remember that his last name was Williams?

I never meant to said he WAS looking at sheet music, only that it appeared
that way. He was constantly looking down as though there was sheet music
on the floor. I don't know how he would have read it if it was indeed there.

I'm glad he didn't distract from your show, but for me, a fan of good
guitar playing, it was painful and embarrassing. At least I know that I'm
not the only one at the show who felt this way.

Iris Dement has flubbed lyrics a few times, I find it part of her
charm. It makes her seem more like us, fallible.

Subject: NN: Birthday Hat--I'll volunteer

   From: Halesbop@aol.com

Well, if no one plans to see her sooner, I'd be happy to present Nanci
with the official Nancinet birthday hat when Connie and I see her open for
John Prine in Indianapolis in a few weeks. (Yup, we got tickets.) As a fellow
1954 baby (she's a few months older), it would be a great honor. Isn't anyone
else on the list intrigued by this concert bill and planning to go? There was
a fair amount of excitement on the Prine list when I posted there that Nanci
would be at that show, but not a peep here.
Has any decision been reached as to what 45 to use? I've seen
suggestions, but does anyone actually have any of these platters? I've got a
bunch of them around here someplace I can go through. Beatles, etc. and I
think maybe even the Bobby Fuller version of I Fought The Law.

Hi Steve,
I'm envious of you, and I'd say, yes! You get to deliver the hat. I
haven't heard yet from the guy who said he'd get the monogrammed hat (anyone
remember his name?), but then I was going to get an appropriate old 45 from a
local source (with a huge inventory, no problem there). Buddy Holly is my
first choice. Shawn "Communication Central" Kimbro will make a birthday card
from the NanciNet if you will give him your address.
HEY MR. DISNEYLAND HAT GUY....ARE YOU OUT THERE???

Just got back from three wonderful days of following Tish Hinojosa and
her band, Marvin Dykhuis and Chip Dolan, around Northern California.
They played shows in Santa Cruz, Berkeley and San Francisco...each one
was a little different. Tish is finally going back into the studio
after over two years..she played some of the new songs...watch out for
an Irish-flavored one written by her keyboardist, Chip Dolan... it just
may be one of the prettiest songs ever!
