Little snippet in The Independent newspaper to-day
concerning the Cambridge Folk Festival, which to my
deep regret I missed once again. Anyway...and I quote...
"The sedate but appreciative afternoon crowd was now
on it's feet. Hal Ketchum unleashed a secret weapon -
his merciless but brilliant guitar player Phillip
Donnelly..."
Ha ha, perhaps that explains the mystery new guitar
palyer...Hal pays better!
Apparently some-time Nanci sidekick Dolores Keane
was in fine form too.
All the best

Subject: NN: Observations from the General Admission Seats

From: nmrs@freeway.net
I was seated in what would be the second row of the general admission
area at Saratoga. I was with my sister (also a huge Nanci fan) and my
brother (who had never even heard her before) and I had just flown in
from Michigan to visit them and see this concert. We managed to be on
the first shuttle bus so we got great seats but of course had to sit in
the hot sun for 2 hours! This was our first live Nanci experience
(well, I'd seen her at the Ark but that was only for a minute) and none
of us left disappointed. We thought she sounded great and never noticed
any trouble with her band at all but since I was singing along as I
always must with her music, I guess I wouldn't have been able to notice
anything amiss. And yes here mood was happy and warm as was her voice.
When she first spoke, however, I was shocked at how her voice seems
deeper and hoarser...could smoking be the culprit?
As for Iris, I love her, too. I was thrilled when I found out she was
sharing the bill with Nanci because I've wanted to see her for a long
time as well. I could not believe that tiny woman could command a stage
with just herself and her guitar (later her piano) and sing like that.
Both my sister and I agree that we needed time to get used to her voice
and style when we first started listening to her music but that it was
worth the effort. The fact that Nanci and group were watching tells
something about what she thinks about Iris.
Of course I wanted Nanci to sing longer...she was just that good. My
dream would be that she would come back to the Ark which is a small
intimate place and sing so that I could really soak up her performance.
By the way, my brother is going to buy some of Nanci's CDs now that he's
heard her.

Dear Netters--
Regarding certain artists using lyric sheets on stage:
As a song writer who used to play with a band from
1979-1982 (folk-rock, country rock, rock & roll) I
sometimes used lyric sheets for the songs I was the
lead singer on (we had 3 different lead singers--I
sang lead about 30% of the time). Anyway, I remember
our playing a wedding reception, and while singing one
of my own 'original songs' I could only remember the
first verse and chorus--so I just had to keep singing
the first verse over and over--all my band mates
needed to do was whisper the first word of the 2nd and
3rd verse to me and I would have been O.K. but no,
they thought it was hilarious that I was 'stuck.'
>From that point on I always use a music stand with the
lyrics in front of me--I rarely had to use them, but
at least I knew they were there. So even the 'song
writer' himself has a 'mental block' and forgets his
own work--no matter how many times he's sung the song.
I was at a Judy Collins concert many, many years ago
and the bass player was using a music stand. When
Judy
sang "Like a Rolling Stone" she used a lyric sheet.
I've always wondered how Dylan could remember all of
his lyrics when performing live.
By the way, I too would like to know more about the
"Revisited" album by Nanci due out 8/24. Anybody know
any details?

Hi all,
Go to this page and see what is in front of Nanci.

I don't know what is on the sheets, but she actually turned the pages during
the concert. Not during the songs, but in between.

This can only the the nanci-remix project which we heard some 30-60 second
samples of last year. House music/Rap/Disco versions of her classics.
Personally, I am delighted. What fun!

Several people have asked about the 'Revisited' cd coming out later this
month. Some have apparently correctly assumed that it is the remix project we
heard clips of a while back. Of the sites I checked, amazon.com was the first
that had all the titles listed. Looks interesting, and even appears to
contain the original versions of songs as well.
Here's what they show:
Track Listings
1. Late Night Grand Hotel - (Gomi's Radio mix)
2. Late Night Grand Hotel - (Gomi's extended arena mix)
3. Boy Wunder - (radio edit)
4. Boy Wunder's - (extended mix)
5. Boy Wunder's - (Twilo Dub mix)
6. Roy Rede's - (Piano And Bassoon mix)
7. Late Night Grand Hotel - (original mix)
8. St. Teresa - (Cyphonix mix)
9. St. Teresa - (extended mix)
10. St. Teresa - (original mix)
11. Gulf Coast Highway - (Baroque String mix)
12. Gulf Coast Highway - (original mix)

I wrote to Damian Music to become enlightened. This is what I got
back. Sorry, I felt compelled to x out the competition. I still don't
think Nanci had a thing to do with this.

Hi Rick,
Thanks but I have the release sheet. It seemed a bit vague. I am
trying to find out whether Nanci was involved in the project and to what
extent. Did she contribute new vocals, etc.?
Thanks
Bill
Yes she was involved in the entire project. Everything was rerecorded and
remixed. The very original late night grande hotel was with a large
orchestra and this is with a small one. Her vocals are entirely new.
Some of the background vocals are taken from the originals.

Subject: NN: Sarah Brightman (no Nanci content)

I realize that this is a Nanci channel, and that generally folk music and
artists are discussed here, but I just discovered a CD that I need to tell
others about. It is Sarah Brightman's (new?) CD "Eden." All I can say is
WOW! I heard her singing songs from the album for a few minutes last night
on PBS, so I went out in search of the CD today. On it, she performs "My
Heart Will go on" in Italian (and IMHO does a far better job than Ms.
Dion), "Dust in the Wind" (yes, Christine from the Phantom of the Opera
covering Kansas), and some other songs that just blew me away. Probably my
favorite is "Only an Ocean Away." The last CD that moved me like this was
OVOR, so I just wanted to share this with you. At least take a listen at
your CD store if they will let you. I doubt that you will walk away
disappointed.

Subject: NN: Nanci's 45 Cap
Date: Sat, 7 Aug 1999 19:19:13 -0700
From: "Julie" (julie-anne@home.com>
Well, I've seen four pictures Anne scanned of the birthday hat she finished
for Nanci and it looks beautiful. It's violet blue with big giant Mickey
Mouse ears and a 45 spinning high above the ears - Buddy Holly & the
Crickets singing Peggy Sue (MCA label). Anne put colorful beads on the wire
or whatever the recorded is mounted on, with a couple of beads above the
record and a yellow star bead on top. Nanci's name is embroidered in gold
floss on the back. After listening to a playback of one of her concerts we
figured out she wanted the ears left on - and they are huge. It's very
funny and colorful and she'll probably laugh her a** off. Someone erased
part of the label next to the Crickets and wrote Nanci's name on the record,
too. Maybe someone can scan the pictures onto their web page for all to
see. And whoever presents it to her can hopefully get a picture of her
actually wearing it. Sounds like an album cover shot to me . . .
Great job to all involved!
Take care,
Julie.
