Another much discussed topic of the past. Some possibilities:

Fare to fare - As in bus fare or taxi fair, the continuation of a trip.

Fair to fair - (Nanci's lyrics are oft typo'd in the liner notes.) The
passing of a beautiful person to a beautiful place.

Hi all,

Here is a report fom one who stayed home(to avoid the traffic jam) and
thought 96% is almost hunderd.

I'm glad I didn't go to the North of France, only 150 mi, for two reasons:
there was a giatic traffic jam shifting from the Netherlands, northern
Belgium to the South and the North of France to the TOTAL zone. They even
closed the France-Belgium border and the exits to the small part of Belgium
what was in the total zone. And the weather was in large parts of the zone
cloudy.

But what I saw here was, through the clouds, was nothing: it becomes a
little darker, a little colder and if you a part of the moon through clouds
or the moon at night it's no difference. We had here a voverage of 96%.

But from what I heard on the radio it is very spectacular in the zone where
there is a total eclipse, special at the moment you see the shadow running
closer and at the moment the sun disappears and the corona appears.

Ken, I am in Coloradey territory, too near the swingin' metropolis of Denver
to see how vivid the meteors can really be. 3 years ago I watched the
Perseids from up on Donner Summit (not far from the north shore of Lake
Tahoe, Calif), and having grown up there, I can tell you that those of us in
a metro area are not seeing one FRACTION of the stars that are out, each and
every night! If you wait till closer to midnight, I hear you will have
better luck seeing meteors. Most of them were shooting from the NE to the SW.
BTW, I am reading an awful lot of favorable posts about the hat, and I am
proud of the "beany" part, but don't forget George who started the ball
rolling by offering to get the hat in Dizzyland!!! Thanks George, and
Julie-Anne who had info on what Nanci had originally said she wanted, and
everyone who had an opinion on what disc should spin atop. This is truly a
labor of love from the whole NN. The hat is in the mail as of today, headin'
to Steve who will hopefully present to her in person, in Indiana on the 26th
of August.

   From: "John Bain" (bain@uleth.ca>

I'd have to check the archives to remember the last time I posted anything,
but Rob's request has stirred me out of lethargy. Its been years, but I
suspect its been its been longer since I saw Nanci, so I got on the net
Friday night and used Edmonton's cool electronic "swapboard" to find some
tickets for Sunday at the Folk Festival (they sold out in a couple hours
back in June, so I had to rely on the "kindness of strangers") and then
made the 5 hour drive. However, compared to some of the experiences I've
read about on the net recently and over the years, mine is definitely a
view from the periphery.

A little background. I was first introduced to Nanci in Montreal in 1984
or 85 in a small concert (5 people attended) at the Golem. Since then we
have crossed paths in Northampton, Austin (the OV1 few days), Seattle and
now Edmonton, definitely a good sampling from her North American range. Of
course each concert was unique.

It was Nanci's first trip to the Edmonton Festival (mine too) and I have to
say its a pretty classy event. They are famous for their eclectic mix of
music and the ability to coax some folks you almost never see to their
stage (Joni Mitchell a couple years ago, Elvis Costello..they use a broad
definition for folk music). Since I was only there for a day I didn't
explore much, but next year will be different.

My must see list included Greg Brown and Loudon Wainwright early in the
day. Both were great, but the real highlight was a workshop at the end of
the day that included: Nanci, Ralph McTell, Andrew Hardin & Tom Russell
and Kate and Anna McGarrigle. Nanci had arrived just before Jimmie Gilmore
ended his concert on the same stage so she joined him for a version of
"Tonight I think I'm gonna go downtown", an added bonus. Tom Russell and
Nanci swapped lots of stories throughout the workshop where she admitted
that she'd still be teaching Grade 1 if Tom Russell had not supported her
at the beginning of her career. She sang the "Banks of Pontchartrain" in
honour of the McGarrigles, introducing it as a song from her busking days
in Montreal, a time when she "got in the car and drove as far away from
Texas as she could". Kate and Anna countered with their sad ballad of the
Texas oil rigs and the rebellious daughter (can't remember the name).
Ralph McTell did "From Clare to Here" and Nanci harmonized. Nanci did
Outbound Plane and St. Olav's Gate with Tom Russell joining in for some
bits. Tom did Canadian Whiskey and Navajo Rug, partly in salute to Ian and
Sylvia (the Canadian connection) and partly bringing it back to Nanci.
Andrew Hardin added beautiful guitar licks to everyone's stuff. You get
the idea. It was the best musical hour I've spent in a long long time.

What can I tell you about Nanci's mainstage set Sunday evening? The
hillside amphitheatre overlooks the river valley and the city skyline
provides an exceptional backdrop. Its a great site! We were so far back
on the hill that I really couldn't see too much. The sound was great
though. Nina Gerber (at the festival with Ferron's band) joined the Blue
Moon Orchestra for the set and Tom Russell and Andrew Hardin were there for
most of it. She sang what appears from this list to be the standard
repertoire for this tour. All of it was very good, but the real standout
was her version of Wall of Death. I've always thought the recorded version
was a bit insipid, not as good as Richard Thompson's, but Sunday night she
convinced me how much she loved the song. She did introduce it (as Rob
said) by saying she was a cancer survivor (breast and thyroid) and that
taking chances was the only way to go. I'm almost embarrassed to leave it
at that after reading some of the reviews I have on this list, but have
mercy, there were 17,000 people there, most of them in front of me. I felt
a little bit disconnected.

The finale of the festival brought a huge crowd of musicians and others
onto the stage to sing Four Strong Winds. Nanci and Tom Russell provided
some of the lead vocals.

For me it was a great day and evening of folk music that included Nanci
Griffith, rather than a Nanci concert with a lot of warm-up acts; sort of
like what I think she was hoping to achieve with the OV projects. For the
highlight, I'm having a problem deciding between Nanci's Wall of Death and
the McGarrigles version of Omie Wise with Kate frailing a nice open-backed
5-string. I wish all problems were like this.

Guess that's it for now. Enjoy the rest of the summer.

John Bain

Michele,

Hi! Welcome to Nancinet! I hope we don't turn you off with all of our
obsession and occasional (OK, frequent) bickering. Let me do the best I can
to answer some of your questions. Someone correct me of any of this is
wrong.

>1. What exactly happened to John?
He was killed in a motorcycle accident after he took Nanci to her
senior prom. Whether the accident happened that night or not I don't know,
I don't think so because she said in an interview in 1994 that he had been
gone for 20 years, so by my calculations Nanci would have been 20 or
something when it happened, but i don't know for sure. Anyone?

>2. Why did nanci and Eric Split up?
I'm not going to start any ugly romors about this one. I think it
was a pretty bad situation, their marriage, in a lot of ways, but I really
don't know. Did Nanci ever say anything about it?

>3. Is there a new man in her life?
No; last I heard she was too busy with touring and stuff for
settling down with anyone.

>4. Who knows anything about the new album?
Which one? Dustbowl Symphony will be out Sept. 21 and has a
couple of new songs, plus some old ones, that Nanci recorded with the London
Symphony Orchestra. Among the songs is Love at the five and Dime in a duet
with Darius Rucker. Trouble in the Fields, These Days in an Open Book, and
Late Night Grande Hotal are I'm pretty sure all going to be on there.
Meanwhile, on Aug. 24 Nanci Griffith Revisited comes out, and what that is
is a collection pf some of her older songs, like St. Teresa and LNGH, in
their original versions and then as dance mixes. We recently had a big
argument about that, and i was so intrigued I have to go buy the album as
soon as it is out.

> and will it be for sale in the UK?
      No idea.

>5. Anyone know much about Lee S.?
Not much, only that she's REALLY GOOD and I think had a solo album
coming out soon. Anyone have more info?

Tracy

Hi,

I've been meaning to post this to the list for some time. It seems that
two of the cover songs submitted to the UPO2 project were later released on
a CD single. Singer/songwriter Steve Gellman had contributed Red Is The
Rose and It's A Hard Life. He has out a three song CD single entitled
"Believe" featuring one of his compositions. The two other cuts are the
ones I mentioned. You wouldn't know that these Nanci cover versions were on
the disc if you just looked at his mailing. Price is $5 (add an extra $2
for shipping).

You can contact Steve about this at his email hiddenpoet@aol.com
He plays a lot of live gigs in the Northern VA, MD, and D.C. area.
Hope this brings some new listeners his way!

Of course there are actually seven planets which grace our skies (to
the naked eye, Pluto needs a telescope) and none of them are the sun
or the moon. Given the small size of the sun from the vantage point
of the outer planets, all of them experience total solar eclipses at
some time or another from their own respective moons. Since the
orbit of our moon is not a perfect circle but rather an ellipse,
there are times when the moon passes in front of the sun, but at
such a point in its orbit that it does not appear large enough to
completely block the disk of the sun. This is called an annular
eclipse. During an annular eclipse the sun is never completely
covered so the sky does not darken enough for the corona to appear.
During a total eclipse, the moon's apparent diameter is large enough
to cover the complete disk, in fact more than enough. That is why
totality can last more than an instant.

>well, i leave you in love and sunshine...

I will be in the dark. Tomorrow night (already today for you),
Thursday the 12th is the peak of the Persied meteor shower. If you
can, take a lounge or deck chair, or just a blanket and simply lie on
your back and watch the sky. The Persieds can be a fickle shower,
but there are hints that this year and next may be very active.
There was a Persied Meteor *storm* back in the 1800's that had so
many meteors falling so often and so brightly, that it WOKE PEOPLE UP
OUT OF SOUND SLEEP!

Well sorry to ramble, but astronomers amateur or otherwise are always
looking for any excuse for either doing astronomy or talking about
astronomy.

I know this has been discussed on this list before, but my lost jewel is
the video of "If these walls could talk"--11 yo daughter in the midst of
video mania used one of my Nanci vids to tape something off of VH-1. It was
one of those parenting moments that came and went, thankfully, but here I
am without one of my most special treasures, still.

I am so sad--I have no idea what success people on the list have had in
getting either video or audio of this song, either through the compilation
from Red Hot and Country, or underground. I am forever grateful for the
gentleman (whose name escapes me) from Long Island who managed the tape
tree that provided it to me a couple of years ago. I'm heartbroken that
this could have happened.

any help would be appreciated as far as locating either kind of recording
of Nanci singing this song...

Well, nothing like a little rambling to keep things going! I saw the pictures
of The Hat Anna sent me... wowser! Oh, she'll flip! I tell ya, if I had a hat
like that, I'd wear it every chance I got! I'm sure Nanci's gotten some pretty
weird stuff from her YASENF's (thank you Kenn!) over the years... I think
she'll love the hat, probably hang it on her wall or put it under glass or
something...

I was cruising around on eBay yesterday... saw a very nice Nancity... it's a
magazine article from around 1990 (I'm guessing, based on the picture) called
"Nanci Griffith Invites Us into Her Home." It's five pages, and one of the
pictures is posted on eBay. It's worth checking out, even if you don't want to
bid. She has good taste! If I had a Visa, I'd Visa in the morning, I'd Visa
in the evening, all over this land...

Anyway, that's my shiny pennies.

I was perusing ebay this afternoon and stumbled across someone selling a
limited edition Nanci Griffith 512-NG Taylor - 63 of 100. I own number 8
myself, fine guitar that it is. Another round of endless thanks to Tom
Overton for getting the NN group, me, and that fine, fine guitar backstage to
meet Nanci in Austin - it has never looked or sounded sweeter ;) It would be
nice to see this one find a home with a NanciNetter, too. I figured someone
out there might be looking for one - best of luck if you are.
