Hi Guys and Dolls!
It's been a long time.
Where did my hair go?
Where did my gall bladder go?
>From time to time I'd drop in on the archives page and snoop on you
guys. Until I got off my lazy butt and installed another system folder
on a new drive, my computer has been mainly a hard disk recorder and
they (the software) really hate internet stuff. Then I went mp3 crazy
and started emailing and ftpeeing music to some doco producers in
Australia So I'm back in the old groove and checking up on you guys when
I can. At the risk of raising a ruckus from the listmeister, I'm
including ,ONCE, my mps.com url's at the end of this post. All the
downloads are free.....None of this stuff is for sale....
It's just a place I've gone to upload mp3 files for
producers, station managers and such to download stuff....they're all
just demos...some instrumental and some of me yelling into a mike...feel
free to visit and I hope you enjoy some of it.
I am attempting again to get The Blue Moon Orchestra recorded. The last
time I tried, all I got was "you want money for what?" from record
companies. It's been almost two years since I tried last and in that
time, every company has changed personnel at least 375 times, so I'm
again in search of some poor unsuspecting slob with a checkbook in his
hands. I figure that If I assure them that Lee will be singing also, we
stand a good chance of not being laughed out of the building.
Everybody's doing well..Nanci seems to be getting a handle on her health
and we are writing together for the new, new album...Pat is still an
Englishman...Ron is still Cuban...Lee is busy building superhighways
through peoples living rooms...Chas is filling some mighty big shoes
very well....and I'm still a jackass!
See you all soon, somewhere.

Well, well, well Mr Hooker wonderful to have you back with us.
Regarding your hair, I can certainly commiserate. Regarding the gall
bladder, I have been wondering what that slimy lit bit of detrius was
in the back of my top desk drawer. I assume you do not want it back.
I anxiously await more recordings. Guess I'll have to get on this
MP3 bandwagon. Don't know if this venerable old Mac can handle it or
not.

In a previous post, I wrongly associated the Persied meteor shower with
the great meteor storm of 1833. The November 13th, 1833 storm was part of
the Leonid meteor shower. See

if you are interested.
Sorry if my error ruined anyone's day.
The clouds ruined my Persied night.

Hey Ken, [sic -- bp]
We stargazing enthusiasts should also let the list know that this year's
Leonids might also produce a meteor storm. Last big burst was 1966 and this
year the predawn hours after midnight on November 17th and 18th have the
best prospects. I know one elderly gentleman in our club that witnessed a
one hour burst of meteors in the 1940's. I don't know what shower it was
but the reports he saw in the astronomy journals estimated 10,000 or more
shooting stars per hour during that spurt. I hope to see such a display
sometime but they are indeed rare.
Also, a quick comment on the solar eclipse reports that were posted. I
didn't see any from anyone in the path of totality. And yes folks, there is
a world of difference between the sun being obscured 99 percent by the moon
and the 100 percent of totality. Having witnessed one as a teenager it had
enough of an emotional impact to solidify my love for astronomy and turn it
into a career as a planetarium director. A total eclipse is an awesome
display of nature's beauty! A partial eclipse is merely interesting.

Subject: NN: John Prine in Boston

Hi: I just noticed that John Prine is singing at the Berklee Peformance
Center in Boston on Sept. 10. Is there any chance that Nanci will join
him , as she is doing in Indiana. I have heard that they are marvelous
together and Nanci had to cancel her last appearance in Boston. The
date is not good for me since I teach my first classes of the semester
that week, but Nanci is definitely worth flying to Boston for., and I
usually drive or take the bus to that great city. My wife and I did not
get our dose of Nanci last year and we certainly need it this year.
There is no one who compares to her. She is the greatest singer ,
songwriter, and performer around and is a national treasure. I look
forward to the North Atlantic Folk Festival this sunday in Rockland,
Maine , which will have some of the greatest folk singers of our time:
Susan Werner, Cheryl Wheeler, John Gorka, Chris Lavin, but alas there
is no Nanci. If anyone knows about Nanci's possible dates in New
England, please let me know. Thank you kindly, Jim Troiano

Hi,
Jim in UK here (Portsmouth). I'm new to the NanciNet and Internet in general.
I saw Nanci at the Fleadh in Finsbury Park, London in about 1992 or something.
Thought she was good, but it was the Internet that has encouraged me to delve
further, and now I can't get enough of her sweet, sweet music. I've got about 5
of her albums and slowly getting all of them. Did you know I had to order
"Flyer" from the States! They didn't stock it in UK!
Anyway, the Net has helped me find new music, and I recently bought Kate
Campbell "Rosaryville" and Lucinda Williams "Gravel Road". I think they're both
very good, especially Kate's "Rosa's Corona". But they don't get me like Nanci
does.
A general question:- Is anyone as good a singer/songwriter as Nanci? Or who
comes close?
I'd like to see her play in UK again. It's a pity I left it so late.
Jim.

Jim and all-
I really love Lucinda'a CWOAGR album, and Iris Dement's Infamous Angel and
My Life albums. She has one other-The Way I Should or something like that,
but I haven't heard it. I also recently heard Terri Hendrix perform in
Austin, TX and she was GOOD; reminded me of Nanci in her style and her
writing. I don't know if anyone else out there has heard of her, or has
heard her music, but I'd say she's efinitely worth checking out if you can.
Emmylou Harris also comes to mind, and in the more hard country category Hal
Ketchum and ofr more rock John Hiatt. Are they as good as Nanci? Probably
not, but close. Other artists and disagreements welcome, as always.

I'm in the process of obtaining Nanci's earlier work on CD. I started
with "A Light Beyond These Woods" and have been listening lately to
"Once in a Very Blue Moon". I think she was really hitting her stride
with this one! I can't take it out of my player! If you're a newer
Nanci fan, make sure you make an effort to here her earlier stuff. I
only wish she would perform up my way (upstate NY) more often. I've
only seen her once in concert near Buffalo during the "Flyer" tour.

I don't think I have seen it mentioned here, but I was looking at
www.getmusic.com and it has the Other Voices Too video set for a 9/24/99
release date. I looked on CDNow and they didn't have any mention of it yet.

Sorry to disagree, but in the Other Voices book, Nanci says that she was 17
when John died.

night of the prom, does anyone know? And what was up with the interview I
read? Was she just approximating about the 20 years, or what>

Jenny,
Angel from Montgomery was written by John Prine. Many folks, however, are
familiar with the cover done by Bonnie Raitt in the mid 70's, on an album
called Streetlights.
