Some of you seem not to have read the "Welcome to the NanciNet" message you
received upon joining the list -- or maybe you just forgot.

Many of the questions that have been asked recently ("Who was John?" "When did
he die?" "What singers will I like if I like Nanci?") are addressed in the FAQ
file --

        http://www.jump.net/~ferg/nanfaq.html

There are a few things there to update --

        my email is bpage@itol.com

John Alvord has moved, and the address for NanciNet buttons has likewise
changed. This info will be posted again as soon as I can find it (or as soon as
John sends it again, hint hint).

And I'm not sure about the URL for "Friends Out in the Madness." Marty?

"Friends Out In The Madness" is currently being maintained at

http://www.cruzio.com/~billpeet/Foitm/fom.html

For those that haven't visited the site in a while, there's a new link to
the mighty fine "Nanci's Hat" page that Sue created. Be patient though, it
takes awhile to load. There's even a preview of what Nanci will look like
when she tries it on for size :)

I've only been a NanciNut since 93, but in that time I've collected the NG

me, I return to PIMW as what I consider the most consistent, in terms of her

I think "Heart of a Miner" is her best effort on an album (not a single).
Cradle of the Interstate is her best effort, period.

Dear Netters,

Just an obsrvation and opinion about some recent notes
on Nanci-Net: Could we be getting into some
"dangerous waters" when asking about or stating what
are probably rumors about such things as "Why Nanci's
marriage failed" "Was Eric Taylor 'abusive' to her?"
"Does Nanci smoke, and if so why?" Are these
appropriate subjects for our group? They seem a bit
"Tabloid" to me.

Bill and all,

I don't mean to be inappropriate or dense here, and I do see how there are
some things about Nanci that really are none of anyone else's business,
BUT... where do we draw the line between that and things abuot her that help
us to understand her music better? I mean, I've always thought that a lot
of the songs on OIAVBM were written out of the emotion of a marriage gone
wrong; uit helps me to ubndertsand the songs better to know that she was
getting, or had just gotten, a divorce when she recorded that album.
Similarly about John...there's a way in which it's her personal memory and
we should leave it alone, but ont he other hand, when she writes songs about
him, dedicated an album to him, alludes to him in her book and so many other
places, sren't we entitled to explore what all the memory represents to her?

Just a thought; disagreements welcome as always,

Tracy

Very good point. If Nanci is as open as she is about these particular
areas - I've seen a few interviews where she has been very frank about her
marriage - then I don't really see the harm in the sort of speculation which
goes on here. And surely it is natural and understandable that we want to
know more about her, fascinating lady that she is. We don't want or need
gossip or rumour, tabloid style, but from my limited experience I doubt that
any of the NNers would go in for that sort of thing anyway.

Gossip about Nanci's personal life (or speculation about her marriage, etc.) is
not welcome.

What *would* be along these lines that would be acceptable? A quote from an
interview with Nanci, a comment directly from an involved party, something said
from the stage (remembering that such comments can be taken out of context.

It is appropriate to mention Nanci's recent bouts with cancer, or Hooker's
illness, or Lee sharing a kidney with her mother. The influence of losing John
early in her life is also open for discussion, as she has made it an integral
part of her music.

It's not appropriate to discuss their love lives.

Subject: NN: Susan Werner's cookie
   Date: Mon, 16 Aug 1999 13:31:32 -0400
   From: James_Troiano@umit.maine.edu (James Troiano)

HI folks: Just got back from the Folk Festival in Rockport, Maine and
there was great music by John Gorka, Cheryl Wheeler, and my personal
favorite, Susan Werner. We left earlier than planned and missed
Jonathan Edwards and Chris Lavin becaus it rained all day, despite the
fact that we suffered drought all summer. I knew it would rain on that
day-but it was still terrific. After her set, I spoke to Susan, who saw
my OV2 hat, my Nanci t-shirt was covered by my raincoat. She then spoke
glowingly of Nanci and told what a big fan she is. (As most know, a
Nanci concert changed Susan from an opera singer to a folk singer). She
signed a copy of her wonderful album, Time Between Trains. I believe it
was one of the best records of last year and I recall that Bill
mentioned he agreed with me. When I started to leave, Susan asked me if
I enjoyed the cookie at the end of the album. About two minutes after
the final cut VIncent, there is another song-a hilarious satire she
performed during her set. One of the many things I love about Susan and
Nanci is their self-deprecatory humor and this song reflects that and
many other things. I had missed ithe song the first time because I
turned the Cd player off after the supposed final cut and used the
rest of the tape for some other music. I then listened to the tape in
the car. If you have Time Between Trains listen for her cookie-if you
don't have it- your missing one of the few singers who comes close to
Nanci as a performer, singer, and songwriter. All of her albums are
great and I just purchased the a concert album from 1993, which I did
not have. See you, Jim.

Shawn's recommendation of last week, Shaver's "Electric Shaver" cd, which
he said vaulted Billy Joe into the great Texans category, alongside Guy
Clark and Steve Earle, got me thinking. Just how could one state produce
so many great artists? I scanned my rather large album/cd collection and
found the following Texans have all made music I have bought.

Townes Van Zandt
Vince Bell
Lyle Lovett
Robert Earl Keen
Ray Wylie Hubbard
Nanci Griffith
Jimmy LaFave
Kelly Willis
Monte Warden
Joe Ely
Jimmie Dale Gilmore
Butch Hancock
Terry Allen
Jon Dee Graham
David Halley (whatever happened to this excellent songwriter?)
Steve Bruton
Gary Nunn
Edie Brickell
Katy Moffatt
Kimmie Rhodes
Willie Nelson
Tish Hinojosa
Sara Hickman
Lou Ann Barton
Angela Strehli
Marcia Ball
Jerry Jeff Walker
Eric Taylor
Dene Anton
Michael Martin Murphey
Rosie Flores
J.D. Souther
Steve Stills
Rodney Crowell
Holly Dunn
Clint Black
James McMurtry
Terri Hendrix
Radney Foster
Darden Smith
Richard Dobson
Trish Murphy
Christopher Cross
Don Henley
Lee Clayton (the first time I heard Philip Donnelly on guitar-way back in
1979)
ZZ Top
Rainravens
Storyville
Charlie Robison
Bruce Robison
plus the three already mentioned.

I know I haven't mentioned a whole host of people, but I have no Buddy
Holly or Kris Kristofferson in my collection, or Stevie Ray
Vaughan.......................................

I'm sure our Texan list members can add to the list, but I thought this
might get us talking and open up the proverbial can'o'worms!!! The simple
fact is, they are all good or even better, great artists.

And you haven't yet mentioned Bob Wills and the Txas Playboys.

I think places where strong folk cultures interact are perhaps more
likely to produce music, at least American music. Texas with its
British, Mexican, African influences--and let's not forget the Germans
who brought the accordion to both La. and Texas--is a particularly good
example. The same goes for 20th century styles--Texas swing of course
is jazz meets country (just as bluegrass is jazz meets old-timey) and
"Outlaw Country Music" was to a large extent rock meeting Hank
Williams. And country itself, combned the lowland southern blues and
commercialism of Jimmie Rodgers with the Carter's Family'smore
traditional fare. Louisina has African American, British, Acadian,
French, and Carribbeean all in the mix; for one bright and shining
moment Liverpool had particularly good access to American music through
the Cunard Lines--and Bob Dylan somehow did it all in his own head
since he's recorded blues, rock, rock and roll, rockabilly, traditional
folk, protest... Of course he didn't do it all in his own head, he had
the radio and the hi-fi, the old Global Village. But I think if you
get too many stations on the radio you get static, and that's why the
continuance of a few strong folk cultures may produce more new music in
the end--innovation sustained by tradition seems to me, at least, the
key to most art.

That's a great list, John. I'm a little surprised at the
heat I got from that statement. When I wrote it, I was
speaking in the context of contemporary performing artists
and I didn't mean it to be inclusive. I said Shaver "claims
his rightful chair alongside Guy Clark and Steve Earle as a
premier Texas songwriter." By that, I meant that he's
writing the same sort of songs, using a somewhat similar
style, and deserves to be considered with the same critical
eye. I don't agree that he's risen to those standards
before this album, and I am familiar with his previous work.
That's just one opinion posted to an open forum.
