Bill ~

I respect your post and agree, though I have to admit that many people (it is
human nature) are just plainly and simply curious about what makes "someone"
tick...the nuances that affect and infect our lives are brought home by
common threads, and Nanci does adroitly weave those fibers into a beautiful
blanket of self expression. I think people perceive experiences as part of
the context of why a songwriter as talented and prolific as Nanci writes what
she does write....so I understand the curiosity. Just my simple opinion...

Peace, ya all, (looking forward to Nanci's new cd, as well as the new one
coming out from the Indigo Girls!!),

But I think (despite the rules) it could be. I honestly don't know
anything about James lovelife and I'm sure he'd be the first to
tell us if it was relevant...but surely loads of Nanci's songs are
about her lovelife and surely she's talked about this in interviews
and so if it's in the public domain, can't we at least conjecture-ize
(I know that's probably not a word...) on the subject occasionally?

I don't want to know who's she's seeing (ain't that a quaint expression!?)
now but I see nothing worng with reflecting one how her previous
relationships might have a bearing on her lyrics for instance. Can
we make this distinction? I mean we're not talking about S & M

Many years ago I think we found out (somehow!) that she smoked
"Sweet Afton" (?) cigarettes incidentally...

That tells Nanci herself on a tape recorded in Boston during the OVOR tour.
She tells a story abour Emmylou and herself presenting one to Princess
Margaret, but she refuses the cigaret, she says: "No thank you I have my own
brand".

This happened on a private concert for Princess Magaret, during a visit to
the US.

Gossip be damned! This ain't just "gossip" to me....I LOVE this woman,
and I want her to win the battle for her health. Anyone, and I mean ANYONE
who continues to smoke, despite a brush with cancer (not once, but TWICE) is
not only gambling foolishly, but is indeed, a fool. I love her, but hey...
if she's still smoking, she's a fool. Smoking increases the risk of almost
every kind of cancer; not just the obvious lung, mouth and throat. I hope
for her sake (and mine, truth be told.... as I said, I love her!) she has
decided to heed the Surgeon General's warning. Most of us who are getting
"up there" in age, can no longer think of ourselves as invinceable. We ARE
mortal.
What is it with the way celebrities smoke, anyway? Anyone care to hazzard
a guess at the percentage who smoke? I find that more often than not, a
celebrity is a smoker, and it just baffles me.

Maybe people who continue to smoke and people who get to be celebrities
are risk-takers.

Folks,
My god are we back yapping about smoking yet again. I've never smoked a day
in my life, but more than once I've wanted to pick up the habit just to get
on people's nerves. Like drinking, gambling or any other 'vice' people make
their own choices and as long as they are willing to accept the
consequences, they can have as much as they want. Furthermore, I've never
heard of a case of someone smoking too much, getting in a car and killing
somebody, nor have I ever heard of a person losing their home because they
smoked all their money away. If Nanci took up skydiving, whitewater
rafting, dating a Kennedy or some other moronic hobby, everyone would be
yipping about what a a brave adventurer she turned out to be.

I really don't think discussing Nanci's past love life is anything to do
with us. At times things get pretty obsessive here on the net. I'm a big
fan of Nanci's, have seen her many times (19 I think), have met her and
talked with her, but I don't want to know everything about her past,
present, or even, future. Where is the mystique? That is what used to
make us, is our innocence, fans of the music. The ambiguities, the
lyrical references, our interpretations of what a song meant to us. The
list is in danger of clinically disecting all of this.

About 6 years ago I bumped into Tom Kimmel at a Post Office in Nashville.
I spoke to him, and he was surprised that I knew who he was. I explained
that I had seen him open shows for Nanci, here in the UK, some months
earlier. At that time, the music press here were full of Tom and Nanci's
liaison. Some months later they obviously parted ways. Tom recorded a
song "What You Stole From Me" on his self relesed "Bones-Live" cd. To my
ears it was a rather cutting love lost song about his relationship with
Nanci. I may be wrong, but if you get a chance to hear it, it is a superb
piece of lyricism, draw your own conclusions, but I'm sure Nanci and Tom
would not want what they once had aired in public. There are some things
that are simply none of our business. If songwriters put things in their
lyrics that we think tell us something about them, fine. But, remember
that not everything a writer writes is autobiographical, it may come from
second hand experiences, and poetic licence, or as Tom Kimmel sings on
his latest cd, "Poetic Justice" (from "Short Stories").

I would've stopped to phone you

 At my back door
 there's a porch light that's shinin'
I just don't mind livin' here by myself
 If I leave it on"

Who, if she's living alone, would she stop to phone? At "five in
the mornin'"?

Robert (Pugsley)

p.s. Has she been drunk driving?

p.p.s. Isn't the line "I don't want to go to sleep - 'cause I just might
dream" one of the greatest ever written?

Ah, one of my favorite activities; trying to analyze Nanci songs! OK, my
interpretation is, the "you" is just someone she cares about, maybe someone
she left in New Orleans or wherever her starting point was, or maybe a
boyfriend or someone back home. She's feeling lonely, or depressed, or
whatever, and she needs to talk to this person, even though it is five in
the mornin'. She would have stopped on the road to make the call, but
decided to wait until she got home and call from there rather than delay her
trip with the call.
I don'thave a clue if this is vaguely right, it's just my guess. And yes,
she must be drunk driving.

I love that line, too. Also, "I'll never be a fool but I will gamble
foolishly".

Tracy

That song is probably my favorite on the whole album, which is saying a lot,
since it's filled with gems. I don't think many songwriters have distilled
so much into one lyric.

Subject: NN: Celebrities who Smoke
   Date: Wed, 18 Aug 1999 11:46:22 -0700
   From: Patrick Gibson (pag@odetics.com>

Hello Nanci listers,

My first post since I began listlurking: on the subject of "Celebrities Who
Smoke".

I think it's essential to your mental health to understand that celebrities
are people - first and foremost. Celebrities are too often elevated beyond
that ranking, and the "goddess", or "superhuman" status people so easily
raise them up to ends up being an unfair and unreasonable status. We can
frequently hear examples of this, such as the celebrity interview where the
he or she wishes "just let me be", or "I wish the paparazzi would just get
out of my face".

We need to remind ourselves of this whenever we find ourselves "falling in
love" with Nanci, or whomever. Please be kind to the ones who make our
lives so very worthwhile. They are not Gods, and are prone to all of the
foibles that humans are susceptible to. It helps me when I realize these
basic FACTS: all people use the bathroom, all people have bad breath, all
people need an occasional shower, et cetera.

So what if Nanci lights up an occasional menthol? Who are we to decide what
others need in their lives? Perhaps many don't realize this, but it's
likely that this very habit is what gives Nanci the vocal qualities she
possesses, and we all adore. Just let it go, and concentrate on your own
health, if that's your thing.

Lastly, I'd like to thank all of those who welcomed me to the list not so
very long ago. I appreciate it.

All for now.
-Pat Gibson

Robin,

To ease your troubled mind. I am a 45 year old, ordinary, average guy. I
am a school teacher in north west London and I live some 20 miles west of
London. I spend 3/4 weeks each year in the deep south (USA), primarily
Tennessee, where we have some friends who gladly put us up. I have been
doing this for the past 10 years, and it's surprising how just hanging
around you get to meet people.

It all really started with an auto crash in Nashville in '93. I got tail
ended and the guy who hit me was Tom Pacheco. I had 3 of Tom's albums at
the time, and we got to talking. Three months later he came to London to
play and as we entered the room I spoke to Tom, he remembered the
incident, even introduced one of his songs with a tale about it. We've
been friends ever since, exchanging Christmas cards, letters, phone calls
and eating out when the occassion arises.

I bumped into Tom Kimmel at a Post Office counter in Nashville, he was
collecting his mail. I introduced myself as a fan of his music, we
talked, and we've never met since.

In Nashville there is none of this 'billy-big time' star syndrome.
Performers are often stood outside clubs, having the obligatory smoke,
and are often pleased to share time with you if you possess some
knowledge of their music. That is how I met Kevin Montgomery, we chatted,
he introduced me to his friend, Matt Rollings (keyboard player to Lyle
Lovett amongst a legion of others). We exchanged phone numbers, and lo
and behold Kevin e mailed me two months ago and we met a couple of times
on my recent trip to Nashville. Kevin has released one cd, has another
due in November, and is perhaps best known for his "I Won't Close My
Eyes" on the last Martina McBride cd. He also duetted with Mary Chapin
Carpenter on the Buddy Holly tribute cd. A genuinely nice guy and he's
hoping to come to England to play in November.

Having written about Tom Pacheco on the lists I belong to, I received an
e mail from Vince Bell's wife. They are very friendly with Tom, she
commended me on my good taste and invited me round to the house next time
I was in town. I have had the pleasure of their company on numerous
occassions and we are very good friends now. Again Vince should hit these
shores in the coming year. Vince wrote "Woman Of The Phoenix" and "The
Sun ,Moon, Stars" which Nanci has covered. He is a great guy and
hilarious story teller, and boy does he have some tales to tell. It's
well worth visiting his web site and reading his journal entries.

I've met many other performers, who I have chatted with, none have become
friends, but these people are genuinely interested in their fans, and if
you show common courtesy and interest in them ( not the prying kind-which
regretably goes on here at times) they are happy to talk with you.

I buy my own cd's, my wife and I are well paid, have no kids, so most of
my disposable income goes on travelling and music (cd's and gigs). I
obviously get decent holidays and I prefer listening to music to watching
tv, so I find sufficient, although not enough, time to listen and absorb.

I hope that douses your 'burning curiosity'.

John "putting out the flames" Graveling.

shaping those songs with the colors I had always wanted to hear in them and
the opportunity to work with the finest musicians of the London Symphony
Orchestra and their conductor, Andrew Jackman."
--Nanci Griffith

On her new album, The Dust Bowl Symphony, Nanci Griffith has chosen many of
her best-loved songs and recorded them with the backing of the London
Symphony Orchestra, giving the songs a new warmth and uncommon beauty.

With her longtime band the Blue Moon Orchestra, Nanci and producer Peter
Collins--who also produced her acclaimed Grammy-nominated album
Flyer--recorded the album in London's Abbey Road Studios. Guest performers
include Sonny Curtis, Darius Rucker of Hootie & The Blowfish and Beth
Nielsen Chapman.
