Subject: NN: not texas natives

   From: RINGDW@snyoneva.cc.oneonta.edu

Jerry Jeff Walker is a native of Oneonta, NY, and he first
played out in the real world in the 60's in the Village (he
was a member of a psychedlic band Circus Maximus), before heading
on to New Orleans. However, he found real fame and fortune once he
reached Austin, where he is now somewhat of a local legend.

Jimmy LaFave, while best known for living in Austin, is originally
from Oklahoma. He is a great songwriter and fine interpreter of Dylan
tunes, but is also a great admirer of his fellow Oklahoma native,
Woody Guthrie. I heard something about him possibly putting music
to some of Woody's lyrics, as Wilco and Billy Bragg have done (they
are supposed to be working on a second album of Woody's lyrics).

And I want to second everything people have said about Terri Hendrix.
The woman exudes warmth.

Re: Noel Desautels' post

John Denver recorded a lovely version of Late Night Radio about 15 years
ago. I believe it is on his Windsong album. My grandfather is now 86
years old and listens to late night talk radio and music when he can't
sleep, which is often. Whenever I hear the song, I think of my
grandfather listening to his radio in the dead of night, and it brings
me a smile.

Take care, Laura

Ok Noel, here's more information than you probably need;

STARLAND VOCAL BAND, 1978, "Late Night Radio" Windsong records
(BXL1-2598)
title song, side A, cut 1
credited to; Bill and Taffy Danoff on liner notes (copyright 1974
by Cherry Lane Music Co. ASCAP

JOHN DENVER, 1975, "Windsong" RCA records
(APL1-1183)
side A, cut 5

Highly recommend the Starland Vocal Band release..if you find it.

It's an amusing song that sticks in your head once you hear it (like
Sherry Lewis's 'The Song That Never Ends'). You got the chorus correct.

I'd love to hear Nanci cover this one, it fits her, or maybe it fits her
fans even more....{3rd verse}
La-la-la-la I sing along 'cause I never know the words
    La-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la
And I'd love to call a talk show but I haven't got the nerve
    La-la-la, o-o-o-, radio

The Lord is still my shepherd but the preachers gotta go
This time of night my interest lies in UFO's
So I turn the dial a little past fifty-six point three
To find myself a lullabu and rock me off to sleep

Hi y'all --

Someone mentioned Bob Wills recently, and I want to recommend a book I
just finished -- "Lone Star Swing" by Scots author Duncan McLean. He's
normally a fiction writer, but this is part travelogue, part history of
western swing. He received a writing prize for his book of short
stories, "Bucket of Tongues" (also worth checking out) and used the
money to fulfill a life-long dream of going to Texas and searching out
the roots of western swing, particularly focusing on his favorite, Bob
Wills. The book is wonderful -- much western swing history and
background, interviews with swing legends, and a unique perspective on
my home state by a sometimes bewildered Scotsman. There's even a
mention of Nanci when the author has a conversation with a pierced and
tattooed employee of an Austin store. I recommend this for anyone who
is a music lover/ traveler/ western swing aficionado. Joe Bob says
check it out.

Subject: NN: Dust Bowl Tour ??
   Date: Sun, 22 Aug 1999 20:57:13 EDT
   From: Rocalittl@aol.com

Hey Gang,
I had the wonderful opportunity to see Miss Nanci's outstanding show here
in Pittsburgh back in May(wonderfully reviewed by Kenn Lippert), and she
mentioned from the stage that she would be touring in the fall behind her
upcoming " Dust Bowl Symphony " release and playing w/ various symphonies. I
was wondering if anyone has heard any news concerning a possible tour, and/or
any promotional appearances that Nanci may be undertaking in support of "DBS"
? Hard to believe the CD will be out in 3 weeks, as well as the OV2 video on
the same day.
Also, did any fellow NNers manage to get any really good photos from
Nanci's tour this summer ? I would love to hear from you if you did, as I am
looking for some to purchase or trade.
Before I fall back into lurkdom I'd like to make a few music
recommendations. Do not miss the new Julie Miller CD "Broken Things"-it's
absolutely fantastic, and includes special guests Steve Earle, Victoria
Williams, and Patty Griffin. Also the Kim Richey CD "Glimmer" is simply
fabulous, and it's beautifully produced by Hugh Padgham. Many, many memorable
songs on this terrific disc. One more- Beth Orton's "Central Reservation " is
a gorgeous, ethereal work with dark and poignant lyrics. I have a feeling all
three of these will wind up on my year end " Best Of " list.
                                    Thanks,

I would check other sources... I recently looked for Hammer and Nails,

had it available now, I order H&N from Tower Records web site.

Of course the information might be right this time...

This may be old news to many of you. But to fans of Nanci
and Kate Rusby and particularly "Gulf Coast Highway,"
consider INTUITION, the 1993 cd from the UK (on Fat Cat
Records). Kathleen and Rosalie Deighton, Julie Matthews,
Pat Shaw, Kathryn Roberts and Kate Rusby. They sing both
traditional and modern songs written by them and others. Of
particular note to fans of our a(NG)el is Kate's version of
"Gulf Coast Highway"--Kate does her inimitable laid-back but
emotional thing with this song but not as a duet. She sings
it solo and accompanies herself on the piano. A
forshadowing of sorts of her wonderful version of Iris
DeMent's "Our Town" on SLEEPLESS. This is a very young
Kate--before SLEEPLESS, the Poozies, HOURGLASS and KATHRYN
ROBERTS AND KATE RUSBY. Also fascinating is Kate's version
of Mary Chapin Carpenter's beautiful "The Moon and St.
Christopher" with Kathryn at the piano. There are lots of
other gems on the album. Listen... I got my copy from the
always reliable Neil at www.fishrecords.co.uk.

I have a suggestion for an official nancinet bumper sticker. A twist on
"Nanci Rocks", but the sticker would say "Nanci Folks". I think it's
cute.

I would not approach Nanci Griffith if I saw her. I enjoy being a fan
and prefer to just have her on that stage, or pedestal, being an
entertainer. I really believe if I did meet her she would look me in the
eye and say "Get your own life, this one is mine!" : )

Hi NanciNet,

Just a few quickies here. First off, the remaining t-shirts
will be mailed out this week. I am supposed to get them
either today or tomorrow from the printer so expect them
before the weekend. All shirts will go out this time
including all overseas orders.

I must apologize to all those involved in the 45 cap
project. I didn't get a card done as I had promised. My
excuses are many, but I sincerely regret that I've let you
down. Steve, I hope you can find something appropriate to
sign for those involved. I believe Steve will be presenting
it to Nanci very soon. If you haven't seen it yet, the
picture is still available at:
	http://www.geocities.com/Yosemite/Rapids/2893/hat.jpg

I heard today from Audrey Auld. She's half of the
Australian duet Bill & Audrey which I've been raving about.
Someone here forwarded her my NanciNet review of LOOKING
BACK TO SEE. (blush> I think that disc is one of this year's
very best, and listen to it often. Amanda and I performed
one of their songs at a show last weekend. Audrey tells me
that the disc is now being distributed in the US on the
*Hepcat Records* label. I very strongly encourage everyone
to check this disc out. You won't be disappointed.

Yes, it's true. Nanci will indeed be appearing in concert with Buddy Holly's
old band (or what's left of it). The concert is scheduled for 8:00 p.m.
Sept. 3 in (where else?) Buddy Holly's hometown of Lubbock, Texas. Nanci, as
those of you who have heard her album "One Fair Summer Evening," will know,
has roots close to Lubbock ("but not too close to Lubbock, because nobody
wants to live too close to Lubbock!")

To further complicate the mix in genres, Nanci and the Crickets will be
backed up by the Lubbock Symphony Orchestra. I'm already on the edge of my
seat waiting to hear what this strange combination of musicians will sound
like, but since Nanci's quite adept at performing with artists of all
stripes, I'm not really worried!

Don.

   From: "David Gilbert" (digilb@bellsouth.net>

I'm a bit confused about a CD I found at CDNow, on the net. I was doing
a search for my daughter for the upcoming Dustbowl Symphony and discovered a CD
she did not have (surprising, huh Amber?). It was
titled Revisited and had an expected release date of August 24th.
Needless to say I ordered it along with the DBS CD expected in
September.

My daughter (a Nanci-Addict and Nanci-Netter) has a net-pal she met on
the Nanci-Net from Scotland and she mentioned the CD to Jenny.
Apparently the CD wasn't going to be available in her country so I told
my daughter that I'd just order a 2nd copy and we'd ship it to her.
That's where the confusion begins.......

The CD was no longer available at CDNow. I attempted to go to my order,
which was in the processing stage, to increase the quantity, but that is
not allowed. I sent a message to the customer service department
requesting they intervene in my order since it had not shipped at the
time (still haven't heard from them).

This morning I went online to check my order and NOW my OWN order for
the CD has been cancelled by CDNow, citing an "unusual situation in
which the stock number was being adjusted".

Does anyone know if this is some sort-of a bootleg or another
unauthorized release that is being blocked by Nanci's label? It's a bit
confusing to me and after Amber and Jenny read this in the digest
they'll be asking me a lot of questions.....ever been attacked by two
teenagers from both sides of the Atlantic? It's NOT a pretty sight!

Confused in Oak Ridge, Tennessee........

NP: Kim Richey, "Glimmer." I have to admit I am more than a bit
disappointed. The review of this album in ROLLING STONE was right on,
when it basically said that it was a consistently good (i.e. average)
album: none of the songs are bad, but none of the songs are great and
really "grab" you, either. That's EXACTLY the way I find it, really a
sad surprise.
