   From: "Deb Thornton" (68coyotes@onms.com>

Greetings, all.

A funny thing happened to me Monday night on my way through downtown Salt
Lake. I saw this NG FLYER license plate on the back of a Harley. The frame
around the license plate said "Two for the Road," and methought "HMMMMMMM.
Doesn't that have to be a pair of NanciNuts?" And NanciNuts they were.
Turns out they were some of the nuttiest, in fact. The best kind of
nuttiest.

Not wishing to lose the helmeted Flyers, my incorrigible car ran four red
lights in order to follow them to the Travelodge. I pulled into the parking
lot just as they were stretching their travel-weary flesh. I had seen that
Hog before, but where?---was it at Rocky Mountain Folks Fest a couple of
times? on the internet somewhere? I decided to keep my distance for a
minute and see if the brain cells would register a positive identification.
The helmets came off.

Well, if you've ever met them, it's impossible not to have a positive
identification with Bill and Sue Peete; positive experiences are inevitable
when they're around. I introduced myself, and they offered to take me to
dinner. At this point I must add that earlier this summer these same two
people had offered to buy me a ticket to see Nanci Griffith way out in
NoCal on 25 July, but alas, I couldn't get there and back in time to defend
my dissertation. You see the amazing generosity of these Flyers.

Off we went to dinner (Sue's lifelong friend Nancy somehow walked into the
restaurant at precisely the right moment---more transcendental
serendipity), then to Bill and Nada's for the traditional ice cream bombs.
Bill and Nada's opened in the 40s or 50s in downtown Salt Lake and it
hasn't changed a bit. The employees still wear vintage polyester, and the
countertops are shiny. Griffith herself ought to stop in at this place now
that all the Woolworth's are gone; at least the counter experience would
provide an authentic feel. She could get her unnecessary plastic objects at
Fred Meyer's across the street.

Well, we swapped stories and stories and stories. Viet Nam and west Texas.
We listened to "El Paso" on the old-fashioned juke box, and eventually
someone played Johnny Cash's "Ring of Fire." Nancy's summary of our outline
of Griffith's present artistic situation is that she's gotten "stuck in her
stock pond," an apt Texas metaphor for Bill's beloved. It got late and we
went up to Nancy's fifteen-story apartment building roof and looked at Salt
Lake's lights. At eleven o'clock it was just starting to cool down a bit. I
spent much of the evening marveling that here were two old friends who have
kept in touch for decades through the traditional means of letters and
phone calls, and here was I because of the internet.

We drove back to the Travelodge and we lingered and lingered beneath
streetlamps. God bless The Flyer, I thought, the wings and wheels. They
went west of Salt Lake City yesterday, on to Reno yesterday, and should get
home this afternoon.

Watch for The Flyer in your town. Two of the nicest folks among the nicest
folks on the internet are bound to be on it, en route to some concert or
festival somewhere. If you can catch them, the dinner will be tasty and the
conversation will be the best. You are instantly among friends. Lifetime
friends.

cheers,
deb thornton

Um, i hope the peetes don't mind that i have their license plate printed
off the internet and slotted into the little window of my locker at
Balfron High School, stirlingshire, scotland...

That is such a lovely story...I hope i see the flyers rolling through my
town, though their bike might have to have some oars to get across the
blue. I think you are among lifetime friends all over this place we call
the NN, even though we have our family feuds , we're just 'teh waltons'
underneath it all...

Hi,

I don't know what I'd do if I saw Nanci somewhere but after my last
celebrity encounter, I'd probably just smile at her and escape with my
dignity. This year for the second time I saw Adam Duritz of the
Counting Crows at the New Orleans Jazz Fest. The last time was the
year they hit it big. I was behind him in a line to get Jambalaya. I
didn't talk to him although I wanted to. This year I had a side stage
pass to the Galactic/WideSpread Panic show at the Fest and who was
dancing right next to me but, you guessed it, Adam Duritz. Once again
I didn't talk to him wanting to let him enjoy his jazz fest without
being bugged by me. Of course I wanted to tell him how much I love his
work with Nanci as well as with his band, but I didn't. I just grooved
on the band and thought how lucky I was to be at such a cool place with
all my friends. Well, later that day while walking to get some food, I
walked right into him completely by accident. I didn't know what to say
so I shook his hand, told hm something completely stupid, and then
walked off mortified. If I had to do it all over again, I would have
just walked off mortified.

Tanya

P.S. I found a taker for my Lyle Lovett ticket in a big country fan at
work. Tomorrow night at this time I'll be listening away under the
stars.

Exactly. Why do we need to revisit Nanci, we never left? I am curious as to
what all this stuff sounds like (having missed the oppurtunity to hear those
cuts from your site back in November) but by no means would I buy this CD.
It's not altering Nanci's music to appeal to a larger audience, it's sacrilege!

Well, using the above logic, we should have no interest in the Dustbowl
cd either then, right? (Though I would maintain that re-recording Five and
Dime with Darius Rucker may indeed amount to sacrilege and hope Nanci doesn't
feel compelled to honor his every request to do a duet with her.) If the
Revisited project was done with Nanci's blessing as we've heard, I have to
say I'd be open to hear it all and willing to buy it. Just as I will if years
down the line a collection of well-meaning artists decides to record a
tribute cd of her songs. I probably wouldn't like everything on Revisited,
but that's no reason to say it shouldn't be released.

Curiosity got me and I called Gold Mtn. who said more or less that a
couple of issues needed to be resolved. The nice man there wouldn't go
into those issues specifically, but said it has everything to do with
the imminent release of "Dust Bowl Symphony". In other words they
don't want to take the focus off DBS and the remix "project" will most
likley come back to haunt us, just further on down the road.

A song written by Emmylou on their new album may get my vote
as song of the year. From memory -

I've been washed in the blood of Bill Monroe
When he sang about the blues in my body and soul
He believed in a God who could raise the dead
But it's a mighty hard road to travel he said

I've been down that road and I've made that ride
But I'll never get out of your love alive

Another song on this album put a lump in my throat. It's very sad. It
was written by David Olney, titled *1917*. The last few verses are not
in English. Who on this illustrious list would do me the honor of
translation?

Lux aeterna Luce-at e-is
Domine cum sanctus tu-is in aeternum
qiu-a pius es
Requiem aeternaum dona e-is Domine

et lux perpetua luce-at e-is Cum sanctis tu-is

Hi Ed and all:

Your quotation is from the Catholic requiem mass, recognizable from
many sung requiems --Mozart, Verdi, and Faure probably the best known
in Latin. There are a couple of typos that make a difference -- like
"dominus, cum sanctis tuis in aeternum..." in line two, but the meaning
is essentially:

May eternal light shine upon them, Lord, with your saints forever, for
you are merciful. Give them eternal rest, Lord, and let perpetual light
shine upon them, with your saints forever, for you are merciful.

The requiem mass always gives me a powerful sensation, particularly
Mozart's. A long way, I know from Nanci, but in its own way just as
compelling.

Hi everyone I was just wondering if anyone can confirm of what I've heard
about Nanci's Revisted Lp was cancelled. Today I went to a couple of
music shops to see if they have received it. The lady at the first store
said that they haven't gotten it. Then I went to a smaller music shop.
The owner said that he received a fax from the company saying that it has
been cancelled and if any shops have received the cd then it would have
to be returned to the company. If anyone can confirm this it would be
much appreciated.

Thanx in advance,

did anyone read the interesting article on Nanci in 13th August edition of OK

there are some good pictures of her and an interesting article on her house in

Does anyone know if the magazine is available online or otherwise in

Subject: NN: Dust Bowl Symphony for $7.10
   Date: Tue, 24 Aug 1999 10:19:54 -0400
   From: T Benjamin Self (bself@MIT.EDU>

Hello all,

Time to de-lurk for a few minutes to pass on a fantastic deal.

If something like this has already been mentioned, I apologize,
I was on vacation for a couple weeks, and I just kinda flew
through the messages from then.

Interested in getting your own copy of Dust Bowl Symphony for
$7.10 shipped? This is not a used copy, but a brand new one.
Plus, Nanci doesn't lose any money or record sales numbers
like she does when you buy used.

It's pretty simple to do, although there's a couple of steps
involved. But, to me, it's well worth it.

First, go to

http://www.coolsavings.com

and sign up for their service (it's a free service that has
online and printable coupons). It might take a little while,
but certainly no more than 5 minutes.

Once you do that, get the coupon for buy.com (it's a link
from the main window). This is a coupon for 10$ off
ANY order (don't have to be a new customer).

you might even be able to skip that entire step and just go directly
to the coupon:
http://www.buy.com/promo/82160586.asp

Next, go to
http://buy.com/music
or directly to dust bowl symphony at
http://www.buy.com/music/product.asp?sku=60335286

Add it to your cart (note the regular price was $13.95 -- so you
pay only 3.95.

Then, check out. If you have to sign up, you might have to put
in your address / etc. BUt you don't have to put in your
credit card number until you actually check out.

That's all there is to it. Shipping is 2.95, tax .20, which
brings the total to $7.10

I believe they're going to ship it on the 14th of Sept, but it might
be a little later than that. It seems worth it to me, though!

Hope you all enjoy!
Ben "saving money is my middle name" Self

PLEASE NOTE: I am NOT associated with either of these companies. I just
saw a good deal, and wanted to pass it on

Artists are paid less for discounts like this, record clubs etc. Trust
me, if there is a way to cut into the artist's take its in the contract
:-)

I am NOT suggesting we all avoid these and only pay the full rate all
the time. My budget doesn't allow for that I know! Just passing along
the info...

   From: klinnert@pol.org (Jackie A. Klinnert)

We went to a Steve Earle concert last Friday night that was great! We
didn't know much about him or his music, except for the fact that he
sang "Desperados" with Nanci. Plus the fact that everyone on the
NanciNet has always raved about him. So putting my trust in this group,
we bought tickets and went with an open mind.

He played at the Fargo Theatre in Fargo, ND, a fairly small venue
(seats about 800 or so). His back up band was the Bluegrass Dukes (Tim
O'Brien, Darrell Scott, and ?). We were pleased that the whole first
set was bluegrass and historical ballads., like Dixieland.

During the break I recognized some friends, and they were not quite so
happy about the first set, because they wanted him to "rock". Which he
did in the second set, with Copperhead Road, etc. The one song that
really surprised me was a bluegrass version of "I'm Looking Through
You" (Beatles' tune)

They had one big microphone in the middle of them, and they took turns
taking the limelight through the evening. At the end, he halfways
apologized for not "rocking" more, and said that the next time they
came, they would. He explained why they only used the one microphone
and that they were taping that night. He said "You might even end up
on an album."

Anyway, thanks everyone for indirectly influencing me into taking a
chance on this concert!

Thanks very much, Jackie, for the Steve Earle report. I've been very
curious how this tour would be received, especially after the Del
McCoury Band left. I imagine Steve is playing to "mixed" crowds. You
mentioned the one microphone set-up. They've been performing that way
off and on since the tour started. In fact, playing around one mic has
become very popular for bluegrass performances. There are lots of
advantages, but the biggest is that it allows the band more control over
their sound mix by insuring that the instrument taking the breaks is the
loudest. That's especially important when you have a hot guitar
flat-picker in the band because that instrument, even though it's often
a big ol' Martin D-28, is usually softer. The biggest problem with a
one mic setup is that you gotta be quick to duck when someone slings a
fiddle bow or banjo neck to the front when the adrenalin starts flowing
on some butt-kicking breakdown. Look out!

Warm Regards,
-Shawn

Lance and all,

I sang Haydn's Nelson Mass in the local symphony chorus, and also sang Latin
in my high school and college choruses. Except for the fact that I was
brought up Catholic, I never had much of an idea about what the words in
Latin meant (unless you study the Mass, and which, back then, I was as far
from wanting to understand the Mass as a sinner of mortal magnitude...). So
I say to you, your Mea Culpa is minor.
