From: Rocalittl@aol.com
Hi Everybody,
The new issue of Billboard magazine, dated 8/28, has a nice interview w/
Nanci and some updated info about the soon to be released " DBS " and
supporting tour. Nanci will appear on the David Letterman Show the eve of the
album's release, Sept. 13. Also she will be touring in the fall and thru the
holidays, with 10-20 dates in the U.S. and Europe, the details of which are
still coming together. The only show that was mentioned was one with the
London Symphony Orchestra at Albert Hall in London, but no specific date was
given. Apparently some of the tour will feature Nanci performing with
regional symphonies and the BMO, and some will be just Nanci and the BMO, no
symphonies. Nanci sounds very upbeat and excited about this new project
throughout the article. Finally, Pollstar has two new Nanci tour dates up on
their web-site: Oct. 14 in Lexington, KY at the Kentucky Theatre, and Oct.
15 in Ashland, KY at the Paramount Arts Theatre.

I can thoroughly recommend the new Dixie Chicks cd "Fly". Thanks to my
local record store I received my copy last night. It is a long way
removed from the cookie cutter pop sap that is mainstream country these
days, and fairly bristles with energy. It utilises the best left-field
writers around, i.e. Jim Lauderdale, Buddy Miller, Mike Henderson and
Dennis Linde, as well as the girls themselves. Mike Henderson also adds
his distinctive guitar to "Hole In My Head" and Keith Urban does likewise
to "Somedays You Gotta Dance", a track which featured on his band, The
Ranch, debut cd a couple of years ago. There are a number of songs y'all
may have in your collections already. "Hole In My Head" from Buddy
Miller, "Cold Day In July" which Joy Lynn White did a few years ago (as
well as someone else whose name escapes me at present), and "Let Him Fly"
the Patty Griffin song from her great debut.
Go buy when it hits the stores Tuesday, you will not be disappointed. It
even has 14 cuts, more than the average cd these days.

I'm really looking forward to this CD, there was a good review in the
Daily Mail on Thursday, (Friday?). Virgin said that the release date
is the 30th so if you have any stores open over the Bank Holiday you
might get it.
Just wondering though, and perhaps I'm just being cynical, but the BBC
doesn't advertise right? So how come the Dixie Chicks concert that
was cancelled earlier in the year is magically rescheduled for the
Saturday before it's UK release? I sense some string pulling going on
somewhere. It was a great concert, shame I missed the first 10 mins
due to a sudden onset of amnesia. Just hope I don't forget to buy the
album :-)
Also, although it's not Country/Folk, may I reccommend to you all the
new Texas album, The Hush. It's brilliant, especially the title
track and Summer Son.

From: Ed Maier (eddie@flash.net>
This album by Emmylou Harris and Linda Ronstadt has spent a good amount
of time in my stereo this week. Two of the tracks were written by
Emmylou (Raise the Dead, Sweet Spot) and a third track was cowritten
by her and Kate and Anna McGarricle (All I Left Behind), and I suppose
that puts ELH in the singer-songwriter class. I'm sure she's written
other songs, but I can't recall any. What a talent to have. (insert
jealous sigh along about here>
There's also a song written by Leonard Cohen, Sisters Of Mercy, that
Emmylou and Linda do magnificently. When Emmylou sings, there is a
strange instrument in the background that sounds like it is powered
by bellows or some such thing. That must be the optigon listed in the
credits. It's another new one to me. (On Emmylous album Cowgirls Prayer,
she does another song by Leonard Cohen, Ballad Of A Runaway Horse,
which is one of my all-time ELH favorites.)
Well, Sharon just got back from the Grapevine Mills Mall with a copy
of George Jones' new album Cold Hard Truth, so we have to give it a
listen. There's a picture of George inside standing in front of his
'51 Packard touring car. I recognized the car make and model from
memory. Now if I could just remember where the heck I put my new
power screwdriver...
Life is sweet,
Ed Maier

Well, among other things, she wrote "From Boulder to Birmingham," which is
perhaps her signature song, and "Prayer in Open D" from the Cowgirl's
Prayer album. If she had never written anything else, those two classics
do it for me.

Don't forget she co-wrote the semi-autobiographical 'concept' album 'The
Ballad of Sally Rose' and the last single she charted 'Heartbreak Hill'
form 'Bluebird' with her ex-husband Paul Kennerly. "Bluebird' also has the
slow 'river for him' she wrote by herself. She also cowrote three or four of
the tracks on 'Wrecking ball'.

Well I'll be doggone. I didn't know these things. I'm gonna get one of
those magnifying glass things so I can read the insert notes. (If I have
to squint to read it, forget it.)
Talking of concept albums, does anybody have Marty Stewart's "Pilgrim"?
I'm surprised it's not mentioned more on this list. Very nice music.

The "infamous" Starland Vocal Band! Now that's a little bit of Afternoon
Delight. AFAIK, they only put out one album, back in 1976. Here's a list of
the songs on that album, they had a wide range of material:
Boulder to Birmingham--Baby, you look good to me tonight--American
tune--Starland--California day--War surplus baby--Starting all over
again--Afternoon delight--Hail! Hail! Rock and roll!--Ain't it the fall.
You can usually find them on any "AM Gold" compilations from the 70's. Now
for my question, how many of you folks can actually admit that you liked the
song, Afternoon Delight. I admit that I did.

I thought it was "catchy," but I still think it's hilarious that the
Starland Vocal Band won a Grammy for Best New Artist of the year, beating
out, among others, Elvis (Whatever Became of) Costello. In fact, as I recall,
the Starland Vocal Band is the only one of the five nominated in that
category that year that has become Obscurity Bound.

Speaking of Leonard Cohen, did anybody notice the reference to one of
his songs in the remake of "The Thomas Crown Affair"? The line
referred to contained the words, "the holy game of poker". I didn't
quite understand the reference.
Anybody? What? You want a Nanci reference? Well it was Nanci's song
"Daddy Said" that influenced me one more time to try and shed my
conformative method of making a living with the unholy game of dealing
with corporate types, and instead try to cause those folks to part with
their bankrolls in the holy game.

Subject: NN: Revisited
Date: Sun, 29 Aug 1999 00:06:21 EDT
From: HenryJG@aol.com
First, thanks to Tom for his post about seeing the Revisited CD at his local
CD store. It prompted me to run down to a local CD shop here in Biloxi,
Mississippi, and lo and behold--there it was right in the rack! (also under
country, although when I went to a second store to check, Nanci was under
Rock/Pop!) And only $11.99. I could not believe my luck!
I was very interested in this CD since I love and collect both Nanci's music
and club/dance music. The CD has zero liner notes, so here is the track by
track low down after my first cursory listen. And for you discographers out
there, the label and stock no. are Damian Music 71499-12223-2. Executive
producer listed as Kyle Utley. Some of the titles are listed oddly on the CD
insert. Most have the song title in bold black type and then the name of the
remixer and/or mix on a line below in a brownish type. But then some tracks
don't list the name of the song at all, but have the remixer in bold type and
then the name of the mix on the line below. I've adjusted some of the titles
so they make sense and put brackets to show where I've added song titles not
actually on the CD insert.
Track 1: Late Night Grande Hotel (Original Mix) 3:31
As far as I can tell, this is the same as the LNGH album version and not
re-recorded as previously rumored.
Track 2: St. Teresa (Original Mix) 5:21
Again, I think this is just the BRFTM version, only with a truncated title.
Track 3: Gulf Coast Highway (Original Mix) 3:29
BRFTM duet version with Darius Rucker, whose name is nowhere to be found on
the CD.
Track 4: Late Night Grande Hotel (Gomi's Radio Mix) 3:22
Disco/house remix. Only LNGH and St. Teresa get the dance remix treatment,
and the LNGH mixes are much better. I think this mix works pretty well.
There are some trumpets added and some additional backup vocals. I quite
like it. Problem is that there are a couple places where the sound sort of
glitches out for a second. I've only noticed it on this track so far. But
if all the CDs are like this, perhaps that's one reason they were recalled.
Track 5: [Late Night Grande Hotel] (Roy Rede's Piano and Basson [sic] mix)
3:37
This was a lovely surprise. No dance beats at all. Rather, it's exactly
what it says--the vocal track from the LNGH album with just piano and bassoon
accompaniment (and some backup vocals). I think those who found LNGH
over-produced (I'm not one of those), will really enjoy this.
Track 6: St. Teresa (Cyphonix Mix) 4:38
Basically a drum-n-bass / techno remix. I'm not a fan of drum-n-bass, and to
be honest, this song's never really caught my ear very much anyway. So this
track does nothing for me. Is Cyphonix the name of the remixer?
Track 7: Gulf Coast Highway (Baroque String Mix) 3:46
This is the most bizarre track on the album, IMHO. Again, no dance beats.
Starts off with what sounds like a full mass choir singing in Latin (the
choir backs up throughout the track). A string quartet (or more than a
quartet?) provides a whole baroque/chamber music feel throughout. And most
surprisingly, although I'm pretty sure the Nanci vocals are lifted from
BRFTM, Darius Rucker's vocals are replaced by an unidentified male vocalist
who turns in a sweeter vocal treatment--think Luther Vandross. Kind of
fascinating in a train wreck sort of way.
Track 8: [Late Night Grande Hotel] (Boy Wunder's Extended Mix) 6:41
Another disco/house remix, not that different really from Gomi's mix. Gomi's
mix is more festive whereas this one goes softer on some of the verses.
Track 9: St. Teresa (Extended Mix) 6:46
A drum-n-bass mix not all that different from track 6. Maybe track 6 is just
a short version of this track?
Track 10: [Late Night Grande Hotel] (Boy Wunder Radio Edit) 4:15
Shortened version of track 8.
Track 11: [Late Night Grande Hotel] (Boy Wunder's Twilo Dub Mix): 6:53
A pretty cool, harder house mix. A 'dub' mix generally means that the full
vocal isn't used; rather, the focus is on the dance music. Here, only
selected phrases of the vocal track are included, often one word (e.g.
"again") repeated over and over. I usually don't care for dub mixes b/c I'm
a big fan of vocals and lyrics, but this one is quite good.
Track 12: Late Night Grande Hotel (Gomi's Extended Arena Mix) 8:11
Basically, the full-length version of track 4. This is the mix that was
included on the Winter Party, vol. 2 CD, only here the full track is included
without being mixed into other tracks on either side.
Although I love club music, I don't get out to clubs too much. However, I
think "Arena" and "Twilo" are the names of clubs in New York City. Anyone
know for sure?
Summary:
7 versions of LNGH: Original and mixes by a) Gomi (1 mix really, offered in
2 lengths), b) Roy Rede, and c) Boy Wunder (2 mixes, the dub and then the
vocal mix in 2 lengths)
3 versions of St. T: Original and 2 dance remixes. Maybe 1 remix in 2
lengths? by Cyphonix? Not clear on this.
2 versions of GCH: BRFTM version and one bizarre mix (by ___?)
What a strange little CD! Oh, and I'm pretty sure the photo on the cover is
from the LNGH photo sessions b/c she's wearing the same ensemble and her hair
is exactly the same as in the LNGH cover photo. As previously reported,
she's sitting on a four-posted bed (perhaps inside the grande hotel?)
Anyone else have luck finding copies at local stores? I noticed on GEMM that
a UK release was scheduled. Was that cancelled as well?
Cheers,
John
P.S. FYI, if this CD is your cup of tea, inside the CD an insert advertises
another Damian Music release: dance remixes of Dolly Parton singing Katrina
and the Waves' 1985 hit "Walking on Sunshine" and Cat Stevens' "Peace Train."

Hi NNetters,
I happened to find myself at one of our local Best Buy stores on
Sunday afternoon, and was surprised to find a copy of "Revisited" in
the Nanci bin. I guess these folks are too busy selling TV's to worry
about paying attention to recall notices. (For you Austinites, this
is the store at Mopac & 290, and there was one more copy left at
closing time Sunday.)
I picked up a copy mainly because it might become a collectors' item.
But also because, as somebody recently mentioned, if Nanci really
blessed it, then I'm open to listening.
Here is some info on this CD plus some reactions from me for inquiring
minds:
Front: A picture of Nanci sitting on a bed in what could be
a "grande hotel" room. It's conceivable this could have
been taken in the same photo session for the LNGH cover,
since her outfits look quite similar.
Top: nanci griffith
revisited
Bottom: Nanci Griffith (in a script font)
Back: Nanci Griffith (in a script font)
revisted
A cropped copy of the cover photo.
Track listing (see below)
Damian Music www.damianmusic.com BMG
Executive producer: Kyle Utley
Three lines of typical fine print.
Notes: NONE! The back of the cover just has an ad for Damian Music.
Annotated Track listing:
1. Late Night Grande Hotel (Original Mix) 3:31
[This seems to be the original version from LNGH.]
2. St. Teresa (Original Mix) 5:21
[Original version from BRFTM, even if not the
the original title.]
3. Gulf Coast Highway (Original Mix) 3:29
[Original? Hmmph! This is the Darius Rucker
version from BRFTM.]
4. Late Night Grande Hotel (Gomi's Radio Mix) 3.22
5. Roy Rede's (Piano and Basson [sic] Mix) 3:37
[This is my favorite track, a definite improvement
over the original LNGH, which I always thought was
over-produced. I wonder if they recalled the CD
to fix the spelling of bassoon?!]
6. St Teresa (Cyphonix Mix) 4:38
[Great rhythms and percussion. But why, why, why
with this song??? It's a total sacrilege,
sorry to say. :-( ]
7. Gulf Coast Highway (Baroque String Mix) 3:46
[Bravo! Very nicely done! I won't say
this is my very favorite version of GCH, but
tracks 5 and 7 alone make this CD worth
purchasing.]
8. Boy Wunder's (Extended Mix) 6:41
[This is a remix of LNGH.]
9. St. Teresa (Extended Mix) 6:46
[Extended?! This did NOT need extending!]
10. Boy Wunder (Radio edit) 4:15
[Yet another LNGH.]
11. Boy Wunder's (Twilo Dub Mix) 6:53
[And another...]
12. Late Night Grande Hotel (Gomi's Extended Arena Mix) 8:11
[And even another...]
I have to admit that the various LNGH remixes caught my attention more
than I expected, given that I am no fan of disco. Some very
interesting sounds there...
So here I sit, listening to my purchase as I type this, alternately
grinning and wincing, wondering if this stuff is ever gonna grow on
me.
But if Nanci really "blessed" the St. Teresa tracks, then my only
thought is:
"And maybe you were thinking that you thought you knew me well..."
No, I guess not, Nanci...I guess not! ;-)
Cheers,
Clive Dawson
