Subject: NN: Concert for a Landmine Free World
   Date: Wed, 8 Sep 1999 10:54:08 -0700
   From: "David W. Gibson" (David_W_Gibson@email.msn.com>

Hello all,
I just received the announcements for the concert series at the
University of California, San Diego. It has the Dec. 4th Concert for a
Landmine Free World featuring Emmylou Harris, Mary Chapin Carpenter,
Steve Earle, Gillian Welch, David Rawlings, and Guy Clarke, but no Nanci
Griffith! Didn't we hear in July that she would there as well? Does
anyone know if Nanci has cancelled her appearances on that tour or just
the San Diego show? Tickets are $45 ($35 for students). The website
with pertinent info is http://ueo.ucsd.edu, the phone number is (858)
534-TIXS, and email boxoffice@ucsd.edu.

Take care,

Dave Gibson

Subject: NN: Tonight, I want to throttle Neil Sedaka
   Date: Tue, 7 Sep 1999 23:57:11 EDT
   From: ChocChippy@aol.com

Well, like MOST of NYC, I couldn't get tickets to the Buddy Holly tribute
hosted by Paul McCartney at Roseland Ballroom...but they did say they were
going to broadcast it on CBS-FM, the oldies station.

I had my dial parked at 101.1 at 8 pm, and they went back and forth from live
broadcast, anchored by Norm N. Night and Cousin Brucie (both RnR Hall of
Famers, I believe), to the performances. Tho the greatest sin, in my eyes,
was when they cut away from the live performance to recorded stuff.

The Fly-Right boys only got about one live song...and the whole middle part
of the show was a set by Bobby Vee, whose voice is not what it used to be
(tho the songs are still pretty great). However, I had my tape recorder going
when a familiar voice joined in with him on "Tell Me How," unmistakably
Nanci! And Bobby introduced Nanci after the song, tho' Brucie & Norm N. did
not mention her or say who she was.

Then they let the Crickets play a lot of uninterrupted stuff...until Neil
Sedaka walked by Cousin Brucie...and as ol' Neil was telling how he wrote
"Calendar Girl" and even singing a few bars a capella, and talking about the
old days in Brooklyn, and introducing his family, I could HEAR Nanci singing
in the background with the Crickets...they rejoined the set just as Sonny was
saying: Thank you Nanci. ARGHHHHH!

However, you could hear the roar of the crowd as Sir Paul came onstage
unexpectedly and joined the whole crew for "Rave On." Paul's still in good
voice, and took the lead, but I could hear Nanci on the chorus, which I bet
was a big thrill for her, too.

The rest of the show was a much-too-short jam, with the Crickets, Bobby Vee,
Stan Perkins (Carl's son).

Well, I've got Tell me How and Rave On on tape...and Paul's very sweet
introduction. He still sounds like...PAUL!

(I don't really hate Neil Sedaka).

Kathleen W.

Hi Guys,
did Nanci ever get the hat? Did I miss that posting? I think I religiously
read everything here but I must have missed that.

I don't know the answer to the quote but my guess would be W.C. Fields.
Yes Nanci did get the hat.

Subject: NN: Salamander Crossing (no Nanci)

Late greetings from Galveston as I sit here in the hospital, waiting for the
computers to turn at midnight to assure we experience no (9-9-99) problems.
Anyhow, in the quiet, I am listening to a recently acquired CD from a group
called Salamander Crossing who I heard on the local Pacifica station in
Houston. The CD is "Bottleneck Dreamss" and is really nice, evoking Alison
Krauss style, clear, crisp harmonies and great banjo! I highly recommend it
to fans of bluegrass.

Also, any info out there on a John Prine release with Delores Keene, Iris
DeMent and others? The radio was giving it great reviews, but I never did
catch the name of the CD. Sorry if this has been answered before, but I've
been out of touch.

really tastes like wine" but knowin' better" DeYoung

Hi Andy,

I really like Salamander Crossing too. Love that old-time banjo. I
heard the new John Prine CD today. I believe it's called "In Spite Of
Ourselves." I usually enjoy Prine's work, but this CD just doesn't work
for me. It has a classic country sound like on that Bill & Audrey disc
I've been raving about, the album cover even reminds me of theirs
proving great minds think alike, but this collection is just bad classic
country.

The cut I enjoyed most is the only original on what could more aptly be
titled "Prine's Diva Disc." It's the title track on which Iris Dement
sings along. That song is also slated to be on the soundtrack to an
upcoming Billy Bob Thorton movie. I may buy it then, but this album
will not make it on to my CD changer. Connie Smith should retire,
Emmylou Harris is misplaced, and Trisha Yearwood is boring. I believe
Prine intended a stereotypical, retro sound. In that, he suceeded, I
just wish he'd backed up another ten years. I'm a classic country fan,
but this is the kind of stuff that proves Patsy Cline took the heart of
country music with her to the grave. Prine has called this his "meetin',
cheatin', and retreatin' album. This is one fan who is retreatin'.

I'm sure someone can tell me how I'm wrong? ;-)

Warm Regards,
-Shawn

It's called 'IN spite of oursleves' and it comes out on the 14th, same
day as DS...:))) I think that nanci was originally meant to guest on the
album. that's what i heard way back in the winter, but she's now
not...so....but i'm sure it's great anyway :)
jenny*, i had a lonesome awful day.....

If you like this one--and I'm glad you do--I also recommend Bela Fleck's
"The Bluegrass Sessions." A superb CD.

Subject: NN: Denice Franke

   From: PhotoTwang@webtv.net (Richard Hill)

I know many NNers know Denice Franke from "One Fair Summer Evening", and
her own, much acclaimed, "You Don't Know Me", from last year.

For those of you in the center of the USA, Denice will perform tomorrow
night (Friday the 10th) at the Parkland College Gallery Lounge, in
Champaign, Illinois, at 7:30pm.
(Also, a late afternoon interview on WWHP, 98.3fm, Farmer City, IL,
prior to the concert).

Then, Saturday night (the 11th), Denice will be in Chicago for a
"Folkstage" one-hour concert on WFMT, which (I think) should be
available from anywhere online, at 8pm (CDT). See
www.midnightspecial.org for more "Folkstage" details.

Enjoy,
Richard
