Subject: NN: The "John McEnroe" of music....
   Date: Tue, 14 Sep 1999 01:59:33 EDT
   From: Annavedo@aol.com

Well, I for one was disappointed!

I've watched Letterman long enough to know better, yet I still hoped he'd
bring her over to speak after she sang. As I sat through the commercial
break between Sharon Lawrence and the top 10, and then again before Nanci
(did anybody count the ads? Must've been a zillion of 'em!), I realized there
would scarcely be time for her to even SING!
The John McEnroe comment came from something Dave said at the start of the
show. He was alluding to the fact that John was the "end all, be all" of
tennis, and said that Nanci Griffith was the "John McEnroe" of music.
Likewise, he said that John McEnroe was the "Nanci Griffith" of tennis. He
was really very complimentary of Nanci, as he usually is.
I HAVE NO IDEA WHY SHE OPTED TO LET "WILL" SING WITH HER!!! It added
absolutely nothing to the song to have a male voice sing in unison an octave
below her. Not to mention, the guy had such a case of nerves, he sang
horribly off-key!
She looked and sounded great though, didn't she?

   From: Catelaw@aol.com

Hey y'all --

Waiting (im)patiently for my copy of DBS to come from Amazon via the "Music
by Candlelight" link (email me privately for info) and especially looking
forward to it after Mike Chesman's wonderfully descriptive review. I was
also privileged to attend a symphonic performance at Chastain Park this
summer and anticipate the new cuts as well.

I have watched David Letterman's show precisely 3 times in the last year and
a half, once recently in a remote corner of Oregon where there was no other
channel and I couldn't go to sleep, once in late summer 1998 when Nanci, et
al did "Desperadoes" and tonight. I think that no matter how much I like
seeing her on television, I'm just not going to watch next time. Letterman
always puts her on last and he never lets her speak. Who was the guy who
sang the duet with her? He HAS to make Darius Rucker sound like Pavarotti.
At least this time I knew she was going to be last so I wasn't captive for
the whole hour.

Does anyone have any idea why he doesn't have her come and sit down as a
guest? Is this standard for musicians on the Letterman show?

WHAT? I think I missed something here. I understandthe McInroe "end all/be
all" thing, but what's this about a letter?

And BTW, I thought her voice was great, and she looked great, but the
arrangement of the song was terrible! Maybe I'm just overly used to the
OFSE version with just James Hooker as backup, but...that performance put me
as close as I've ever been to NOT buying a new Nanci album. But I'm still
gonna get it, thanks to Mike's review and also the fact that I'm such a
Nancinut!

That was a member of the the CBS Orchestra. Or you might think of them as
the Late Show Band.

As a semi-regular Letterman viewer. I have to come to David's defense. In
her earlier appearances Nanci DID get to speak and sit down. It is now
pretty rare that a musicial guest gets to sit in the chair unless they are
Cher, Madonna, or Janet Jackson. You get the idea. And the musical guest is
always the last shown. Anyway, David always says nice things about her.
Something that he doesn't do for every musical act that appears. Although I
did find it amusing that he jokingly referred to her as the John
McInroe(sp?) of music considering her letter printed in all the papers.

Cate, when Flyer first came out, Nanci did "This Heart" on Dave. She sat
with him for several minutes afterwards and was completely charming. She
talked about living in Ireland and going to "the shops" to buy a mop. Dave
quipped a line and suggested it be her new song (anyone remember the
specifics?). She called out to someone while looking in the audience and
pointing at Dave, "Co-writer credit!" (Did I get ANY of this right?)

As a former avid late-night talk show watcher, I can tell you that usually,
if a musician or a comedian is on the show and PERFORMING, they are billed
last and bumped if there's not enough time. Why is Nanci not billed as a
non-performing guest? Your guess is as good as mine, but I'd bet it has
something to do with promoting new music by performing it.

I could be totally wrong though--anyone else know?

I also was very dissapointed with the performance on Letterman last
night. Nanci herself was fine, but the guy she sang with was horrid.
I thought the orchastral arrangement took away from the song. The five
and dime song isn't one of my favorites either. I know it's a very
popular song, but c'mon. There are probably a hundred better nanci
songs.
All and all it was a pretty flat and uninspired performance. I'm still
questioning whether to get the album or not. I'm anxious to hear (as
I'm sure I will) what other people think of the album.

My 2 cents:

I really liked the orchestral arrangement for Love at the Five and Dime. With
the clarinet part, it had that Randy Newman, "Good Old Boys*" feel that I like
so much. Yes, the male vocalist was absolutely horrendous, but he gave me
hope! If he could sing on national TV with Nanci, the odds are better than
I thought that someday I'll get to sing on a stage with Nanci, too!

It must be that the appearance on Letterman last night was supposed to
prepare us for the cd---after enduring that we should all think hearing
another Darius duet is fantastic, compared to what could have been....
Well, that's not likely in my case. I don't care who sings it with her,
I'm not going to like Five And Dime as a duet. It just doesn't work on any
level, IMO. It's a shame, too, because I've enjoyed the live versions of it
Nanci has sung by herself at the concerts this summer immensely. But I did
like the expanded instrumentation, and will be buying the disc (as well as
the new NRBQ cd, which I KNOW is going to be dynamite) shortly, en route to
see Bela Fleck's bluegrass tour in Ann Arbor.

Nanci gathered together many of her children and dressed em up, spit
polished, ready for Sunday church. I'm not sure what someone who has
never heard Nanci before would think but this one's definitely for us;
enriched by our knowledge of her history. It is such a treat. Ok Ok Try
not to think of Driving Miss Daisy during a couple parts.
And be thankful she was given another shot to fix the beautiful song
"Waiting for Love" (no angels this time).
To be honest, I had lost my fanaticism of late and am currently being
recharged. Frank Christian's song seems out of place in this company
but I love hearing anything new she blesses us with. Go buy it!

I contacted the Royal Albert Hall again this morning to try to get info about
Nanci's proposed concert with the LSO. Once again they were extremely
helpful and looked at all their lists and diaries and bookings and even 'went

any date, even a tentative one.

I'll keep trying but I'm beginning to lose confidence that this is actually

Well I finally got a copy from a good old NNer who
sent it express across the pond.

Now, I've heard some strange things in my time, Scelsi's
one note extravaganza,Branca's guitar overload, Japanese
metal merchants Merzbow, Derek Bailey, Pete Namlook,
I just bought a great CD by Nobukazu Takemura which
mostly sounds like your CD players gone wrong...but
I like all this stuff because it's different and it
gives me a break from verse/chorus/verse...but nothing
could prepare me for Nanci Griffith Revisited!

Maybe it's context, we all know what LNGH sounds like,
we all know what St. Theresa sounds like, and it's
just a tremendous shock when we hear it in a different
way. Given that some people hate dance music it's
hardly surprising they don't like this. But this wasn't
made for them, this was made for a whole different bunch
of people, those who like their house four to the floor,
who like their entertainment chemically enhanced...the problem
is would this appeal to them? And I'm not sure it would.
And why have the basoon version?

This album is a mess, I enjoyed it in places and I'll
probably put a few tracks on some tapes (home taping!
is there no end to this mans lawlessness...)but who
else is going to buy it?

I saw the Ronstadt/Harris concert in Portland, Oregon. It was their
first full show on this tour. They played 30 songs. Man, it was
great! They played all the songs on their new album, plus many,
many individual hits. Really, if you can make this show, by all
means do it.

On a humorous note, there was a woman at the rear of the stage near
a light source, and it looked as if she was receiving a constant
stream of faxes. It took me half the concert before it dawned on me
that she was feeding lyric sheets into some type of camera
contraption so that Linda/Emmylou could read the words on monitors
placed before them on the stage floor.

I wondered why Linda Ronstadt was looking down so often.

household names were mentioned, including Steve Earle, Buddy and Julie
Miller, Gram Parsons, George Jones ("too country for country radio"), Wilco,
Sun Volt, Whiskeytown, Jim Lauderdale, etc. Gosh, those names alone are
enough to send one into euphoria! They mentioned Alejandro Escovado as
their artist of the decade, despite being a person (so host Don Gonyea said)
whose name was not well known to many NPR listeners. Not to me! I think
Don is unaware of his own medium's role in popularizing (for lack of a
better word) the works of these artists.

 Hi All:

I know that earlier we had today as the release date for OV2 video,
but then in faded into the background. When I went to get The Dust Bowl
Symphony this evening I also check out when the video would hit the
shelves. It was there. The one and only copy in the store. Needless
to say that tonight is a Nanci night in our house. I have just finished
watching and hearing them both, and may I say that they were both
great.

OV2 video is not the same songs as the CD, it has The Road To Aberdeen,
which I had pretty much given up on ever finding here in the states.

Is this the first day for the video also? Have any of the rest of
you seen it yet?

No offense taken, Anne....... I think it's funny too. Not too long ago,
another nancinetter thought I was a man (actually, he thought I was a German
homosexual) - it made for some interesting email exchanges until I realized
that the person mistook my gender :)   I'm all woman, believe me.   German;
straight, but not narrow(-minded). My name is perhaps uncommon not only here
in the U.S. but in Germany as well. It is a Germanized version of the Latin
word "donata", which means "the gift/the given" (I was the first girl after 6
boys......). [Lance Beizer, you may want to jump in here with your Latin
expertise and try to correct
me (just know that I, too, studied Latin for 7 years!!!! :)]....... I hope
Nanci knows that she has ardent fans not only in the English speaking countries
of the world. I translated a couple of her songs into German (Talk to Me
While I'm Listening and -- don't laugh -- Gulf Coast Highway) and played them
on my 12-string. But - just as with many opera arias and such - Nanci's message
just isn't done any justice in the German language. Besides, the closest thing
that Blue Bonnets might compare to over there is "Edelweiss" -- and that kind
of music I just can't get myself to sing - EVER! So, I abandoned that project
quickly.....:). Nanci may be the best kept secret on this side of the planet,
but there are fans all over this world. Glad you had a good chuckle, Anne!
Maybe we need to revisit some of my old postings now? :)

Alan -- I'm glad that there are other nancinetters out there who appreciate

Hi,

OH no, oh no, oh no, oh no....she asked abotu the letter?????? oh
no!!!!! who's going to break the news?

I don't like david letterman. i just don't like him, he gives me the
creeps. i can't really explain, he just does. i know you're supposed to
have some sort of 'valid' reason for disliking people, but....urgh. I
think maybe beacause of what he wrote on the back of 'NGOV' 'i haven't
read this book', what was that all about? why tell people to read
something when you haven't even taken the time to read it yourself. i
just don't like him. and he was rude to darius rucker. anybody notice
that? at the end of the tape i have of them doing 'GCH', he runs over to
nanci, briefly touches darius's hand and then stands with his back to
him while he drools over nanci. ok, so we all know she' cool, but what
about little darius standing there all alone??
And onwards, i have ANOTHER 'revisited review. it made me LAUGH. for a
really, really, really long time. it was waiting on my doormat when i
got in from that horrid school place today (thanks to amber and her dad,
nice NNers, all) and i had trouble getting the shrink-wrap off quick
enough.then i watched as my little brother's eyes slowly moved miles
from their sockets. we laughed. i was in wetting myself. my mum got home
and decided that nanci was definetly better this way. at least we could
now go jogging with her on the personal stereo (? mums...)
But, i think that 'revisited' is...well, it's not that bad! i hate
dance music, always have, always will. i think the piano and bassoon
remix is ok. it just sort of hurts your ears because whoever did the
backing is out of time with nanci's voice and her expression obviously
isn't the same because she ain't there and she can't hear that bassoon
and that piano. what he did to 'st teresa' was criminal. really. who
could do that to a song that has so many hidden meanings and is just
so....well, saintly! i'm actually still listenign to the rest of it as i
speak, so perhaps i have no right to have judged it yet, but y'know, i
can see nanci sitting at home with all these recalled copies of
revisited, wondering whether to burn them or use them to shave her legs
with...and then she crosses to the hi-fi and pops one in and she's taken
over by the disco bug and she's dancing and dancing and she doesn't stop
except to make a phonecall to the hookman saying htat their next album
will be a dance album. and this time it'll be legal....aggghgh!! let's
all run and hide.
this cd's good for a laugh and to steal ideas for my stnadard grade
'arrangement' of lngh...but that's about all. now where has my dustbowl
