Riverdance is the first thing that came to my mind when I first
heard this version of *It's a Hard Life*. I like to listen to CDs
on my computer (it's got the best speaker system in the house), and
I keep expecting to see the two dancers Michael Flatley and Jean
Butler come bouncing across the monitor. This is a great song. This
is a great album. Kudos to Nanci.

I think it's really good. you can hear the 'dustbowl' blowing in over
the land...and then you can hear the sounds of the towns peeking through
that dust, standing true through the storm...

I've only heard the record once so far, been very busy with seeing live
music this week (Bela, a pair of NRBQ shows and the Ann Arbor Blues and Jazz
Fest). And I haven't read many of the NN posts about it. But 'Drops...' seems
to be one song that is getting the least favorable reaction. Upon my first
and only listening, I have to say I like it. It reminds me of something Susan
Werner might do, which I think is interesting because I've read that Nanci
was a big influence on Susan.

Sorry for the private nature of this email, but everyone knows that the 2nd

Dear Netters--
Well, after many months of 'expanding my musical
library and listening" with such artists as Lucinda
Williams, Cheryl Wheeler, Stacie Earle, Kim Richey
etc.
Five minutes into the OVOR2 video I had fallen deeply
in love with Nanci again. The people I had been
listening to lately are wonderful even great
singer/song writers--but Oh how I had forgotten how
much better Nanci is!
The video is 1st class in everyway, both audio and
video are superb. But of course the best thing is
hearing THAT VOICE (one of the all time great voices)
and seeing this lady who keeps getting more beautiful.
I think that despite her age the beauty inside her
keeps growing and it shows thru in her physical
beauty.
The program is a nice mix of songs from the OVOR2
album and other songs. Mercifully, Odetta has a
relatively short song. But the whole video is a joy
to watch and listen to
By the way, a certain 'rumor' posted on this net this
summer is totally proven false. I won't tell you what
it is--you'll have to buy the video to find out.
The video also once again shows that Nanci is the most
unselfish performer I've ever seen. I think its
wonderful that she has become the 'champion' of folk
music and wants to keep alive and present these great
old folk songs to a new generation.
Can you tell I've fallen in love again? Nanci has
always "stood me still, and always will."

Dear Bob,
You describe Nanci so well. I am anxious to see this video, and I agree that
she is truly an unselfish performer. We all love that about her, don't we?
As a 42-year-old woman who is only getting more beautiful myself (hey, it's
okay, I don't mind admitting it!), I have to say your sentence about Nanci's
age and beauty made me smile. You wrote that "...despite her age the beauty
inside her keeps growing and it shows thru in her physical beauty." Of course
it is, in reality, her age that makes her beauty keep growing. Our
experiences in life, love, loss, and all of our accumulated experiences make
us more and more "ourselves," so that our natural beauty shines through.
So rather than being offended by what you wrote, I just wanted to straighten
you out a bit. Hope you take it with a smile, too!
I'm so glad you've fallen in love with Nanci again. I agree, she's a gem!

The new Alison Kraus is nice, but a far cry from So Long, So Wrong. Its
very, well, laid back. Nothing wrong with that, just don't expect
hard-driving bluegrass.

Just bought "Forget About It" yesterday, along with Nanci's "DBS,"
Santana's "Supernatural," and Jesse Winchester's new "Gentleman of
Leisure." I don't often buy this many CD's at one time but I've listened
to 'em all and feel I'm 4 for 4. The CDs by Nanci, Alison, and Carlos
Santana are all top releases in my book.
Jesse Winchester will remain one of my favorite songwriters of all time --
and I will buy anything and everything he releases -- but these days he
seldom reaches the pinnacles of his earlier work. "Yankee Lady," "Brand
New Tennessee Waltz," and "All of Your Stories," are three of his best
songs and the titles of many other favorites are just of reach of my Monday
morning memory.

The dog has inside connections and has actually graced several album booklets
over the course of his modeling career. He figures prominently on the cover of
an album to be released soon. Don't want to ruin the surprise by telling you

You can blame all of the delays on filters in the system, and on my not being
around my computer during the day...
Folks, if you put any version of the word that means "signing up for the list"
(s*bscr*b*) in the body of your text, it will be read by Majordomo as a request
for administrative services and get bounced to me for action. Because I no
longer can access NN from work, this means that a bounce in the morning will
stay that way all day. So in Sarah's case, her morning post (which used the
"*ns*b" wording) didn't get relayed until after 6:00 PM EDT. To add to the
confusion, I didn't go back on line until 8:00 AM EDT the next day, so her note
asking about the delay (which also used the "*ns*b" wording) was stuck in que
until this morning.
As to the "Reply to:" lines, when I manually approve a message, it may not get
the "reply-to" unless I remember to type it in.
A list-owner's work is never done :).

I've notice several instances of a Jazz influence on
DBS. Obviously Drops From A Faucet is a very jazzy
song--I think it the most interesting song on the
album if not the best one. Another is the Billie
Holiday reference at the end of PreWar Kimbal: "god
bless the child who's got [a song], who's got (a
song)]". Then there's the skat at the end of Wing and
the Wheel (though it's not the traditional jazz skat).
Nanci seems to be exploring her jazz influences a bit
on this album. So what's next? A NG jazz album to go
with the symphonic album. I'd buy it.

Has anyone else had problems running the DB CD in their computers?
It seems as though Electra, in a moment of feeling technically up to date
added an executable file to the CD. So, when I pop that sucker into the old
CD player, the computer can't decide if it's an Audio or Data CD. Autorun
of the CD PLayer doesn't happen. I need to manually start the CD player
and wait a long time until it recognizes that there's an audio CD in there.
Winamp won't even recognize the thing. I'm probably going to have to rip
it and put the MP3's on my hard drive. :-(

Haven't had any problems except their is no automatic startup.... thanks for

Hi Folks:
Finally received my copy of Dust Bowl Symphony and I fully support the
praise it has received on this list. It is a fine achievement by Nanci and
has totally surpassed all of my expectations for this album. Asleep At The
Wheel's excellent "Ride With Bob" (thanks for the tip on this Shawn) and The
Faces "Good Boys" compilation have been dominating my CD player for the
last two weeks but I can't imagine listening to anything other than Dust
Bowl for the next week or so. Hey, she even name checks Randy Newman!
UK Tours
October and November are shaping up as fine months for concerts in the UK
with Mary Chapin Carpenter and Richard Thompson playing major
venue's (very sad news about Lyle, hope he makes it back over here
soon). Also, dates have been announced for UK and Ireland concerts for Tom
Russell and Eric Taylor. The dates and (small) venues are:

October 10 Bristol - Hen and Chicken
October 11 Shrewsbury - Lazy Acre
October 12 Lincoln - Black Horse

November 10 Glasgow - Chambers Bar

Eric is being supported by The Good Sons frontman, Michael Weston King. I saw
Michael earlier this year when he supported Lucy kaplansky in Glasgow - he
is a good polished performer but was completely blown away by Lucy (who
