   From: Rob Schrull (RSchrull@gbla.com>

Hi Folks:

It's been a long time (work has kept me from it and you) since Nanci's site
has been updated, but it's pretty nice looking now. Links have been
checked on the main page and a few things. Hope to sometime have the end
of Two of a Kind up.

I need someones help (again time constraints) to take a look at the ngdata
page ("pertainent facts and rumors link" and check out the links and update
it, if anyone is interested, including new links that may be out there.
Don't send me attachments or anything like that, just email me and let me
know if you wish to help, and I'll write back.

Had a nice time talking to Hooker last night. He's doing great.
Beware...He's watching you folks!!!!

Went to a memorial service of a dear friend a few days ago. His
daughter-in-law sang at the service. Never heard of her. She was great.
Later at the reception, I had a nice chat with her. Turns out she won
Kerrville this year. Anyone out there know Diane Zeigler? If not, you
definately should!

Guess that's it for now. Got to go eat. I'll jot more thoughts later.

My best to you all,
Rob

   Date: Wed, 22 Sep 1999 09:35:41 EDT
   From: Catelaw@aol.com

Hey Y'all,

Have to add my kudos to the pile for the stunningly gorgeous Dustbowl
Symphony. Even though I was blessed to hear Nanci's symphonic performance
live this summer, I truly didn't expect much out of this CD, most likely
because of the lack of new material. I didn't really even get excited about
it until I read Mike's wonderfully articulate review early on.

How wrong could I have been? DBS is nothing short of a musical triumph and
quite simply one of the most beautiful collections I have ever had the
pleasure of hearing. Nanci sounds so vibrant, alive -- she's just "in the
zone." Being quite the insomniac, I have found that listening to music
through my headphones at night a good way to drift off, if it's going to
happen at all -- my biggest problem with DBS is that I can't BEAR to go to
sleep until I hear the last note. Back to "Sea Prayers and Whispers" for
sleep therapy I guess . . .

While 1937 Pre-War Kimbro (haha) didn't inspire me to give my own ancient
piano away, it has inspired me to get it out of mothballs, tuned up properly,
and my hands back on its keys. I turned my back on it well over 25 years
ago, but am now just burning to play again, being made humbly aware that
being able to have "both hands happenin'" is a gift that I shouldn't waste.
I thank my parents for giving me a song and Nanci for reawakening it -- I
will try to repay that by playing out loud.

I will also go on record as saying emphatically that I LOVE the LATFAD duet
with Darius Rucker. I'm not quite sure why he's often less than appreciated,
but that's okay. I love his smoky, well, dusty voice and I also love the
fact that he obviously loves Nanci. You go, Darius!

Also thanks to Ron Crain for the .EXE info on the CD. Mine won't autostart
either and I thought it was my computer, which was just frosting my shorts in
a big way.

On other notes:

Have to agree with Hans on Alison Krauss' latest effort and have already
Forgotten About It. The package is slick and attractive, her voice as
mellifluous as ever, but the music is just uninspired, IMHO, and not worthy
of her earlier efforts. But everybody has a bad day now and then.

Sad to hear about Lyle Lovett's dad -- from what I've read, his small family
is extremely close and I know that this great loss is difficult to bear. I
fell in love with Lyle all over again on my driveabout and found "Step Inside
This House" the perfect soundtrack for burning the asphalt across a dark
Texas panhandle night. That trek was lit by the Perseids that Kenn couldn't
quite see through the clouds in PittsburgH, but Kenn, I sure enjoyed them for
you.

For anybody in the immediate area, Junior Brown is playing the 40 Watt Club
in Athens, Georgia this Friday night (9/24). Never seen any JB commentary on
here, but having heard him blow the doors right off of the Variety Playhouse
in Atlanta last May I can heartily recommend that anybody in driving distance
get themselves to Athens Friday night. Junior is inimitable, amazing. His
most recent release, "Long Walk Back" with its crown jewel "Stupid Blues" is
well worth a listen. You've got to be good to get on stage in that hat.

EEEK! Sorry this is so long. Back to work.

Cate, "both hands happenin'" in Atlanta

   From: "Thomas, Geoff" (gthomas@tristategt.org>

I have questions about a couple of Nanci Griffith songs - I hope someone can
answer these for me. They're certainly not of earth shattering importance,
but I've always been curious to know:

First, What IS the "light beyond these woods"? Is the song based upon real
events?

Second, Who does the song "Ford Econoline" refer to?

Thanks to anyone who can help satisfy my curiosity.

And concerning the new album - it's in the mail on its way to me, and all
the comments I've read so far are making me quite impatient for its
arrival!!

IMO, "the light beyond these woods' is a metaphor for all the life experiences
available to 2 young teenage girls beyond the boundaries of the Rollingwood
suburb of Austin, TX.

"Ford Econoline" was originally written about the singer/songrwriter Rosalie
Sorrels. Nanci later changed her story to include the memory of Kate Wolf.

Light is about Nanci's relationship with Margret Mary Graham, a childhood
pal. They dreamed of the bright lights together. John was Nanci's high
school boyfriend, who died in a motercycle accident shortly after the
senior prom.

Maggie (now Heenie) is doing pretty good after her lung transplant last
year. A bunch of us NanciNetters banded together as Candlelist and work to
raise money for her. So far we have raised over $18,000 in two years. The
bills are overwhelming.

Dear Nancifans,

I was listening to a tape of Flyer while driving this afternoon. When I
arrived home I pressed the button to eject the tape and it took me a few
moments to work out why Nanci was still singing. Believe it or not, at
that very moment Speed of the Sound of Loneliness was being played on
the radio (Country 1035)!

I'm not suggesting there is necessarily a connection, but shortly after
this unique concurrence of events there was a violent electrical
storm...

All the best,

   From: ALABAMAlum@aol.com

What a thrill this new CD is. And as for Drops From the Faucet...I
personally LOVE it and would love to hear an entire album of Nanci doing that
type of music! What a fun change! Drops and 1937 Pre-War Kimball are my
first favs. The entire CD is so up close and personal...it's like having
Nanci singing to you in your own livingroom. Maybe it's the limited use of
harmony vocals. Very nice to hear "just Nanci" throughout much of the CD.
This will be one of my favorite Nanci CD's.

Subject: NN: warning: long-TALBTW, FE, TOAK, JB, OV2, IAHLWYG
   Date: Wed, 22 Sep 1999 23:04:42 EDT
   From: "Tracy Applebaum" (poohbear512@hotmail.com>

Hi all! I want to respond to several threads that are out there and
apologize if this seems like a really random list of topics.

First, about the TALBTW question, I've always seen it as one of those nanci
lines htat has so may different meanings it's hard to figure out what teh
"real" one is, but one of them is a metaphor for, like someone said, all the
opportunity that is out there for two ten-year-olds from Rollingwood.
Another could be a reference to when she says, "let's go to New York City
Margaret", a similar line of thought but kind of a more concrete reference
to the city lights. ALSO, "light beyond these woods" seems like a more
poetic, unique, and just plain NANCI way to say "light at the end of the
tunnel," which would have significance for her in terms of moving on after
John's death, in terms of just getting through childhood, and (this may be
pretty farfetched, as if the others aren't) in the song St. Teresa, which is
in the memory of a friend of theirs who committed suicide, kind of a message
of "this was such a terrible thing, to end her life before reaching that
light or even getting close enough to see it.  Don't let this happen to you;
there IS a light..." Or am I totally off base?

Re: Ford Econoline...she said when she pklayed the song at Wolf Trap in '97
(Ok, so I remember a lot of small details about nanci shows)that it was
about two women, Kate Wolf and Rosalie Sorrels, who she rolled into one for
the character in the song. She also makes a reference to it in the liner
notes for LSSOM.

What's this about Two of a Kind, Rob? The whole thing up ont he web?
Wouldn't That Be Roses! Does anyone know if she has a hard copy publisher
set up, though? I think I remember hearing a couple years ago something
about its being published "in the near future" on Random House; anyone know
about that?

Sorry Cate but I really have to disagree with you about Junior Brown. I saw
him last summer I guess it was,. with a few other people, and his set seemed
to go on and on, and his songs seemed really not that well written. I
believe "Venom Wearin' Denim" was a big hit for him and then "My Wife Thinks
You're Dead," and the only thing worse that that song is the video. IMHO of
course.

I just got the OV2 video yesterday, watched it today. Excellent!
COngratulations, Nanci, you've made another wonderful video that can't make
it out of my VCR! I especiazlly love her live version of Wall of Death,
just because she seems to be havuing so much fun when she sings the song and
it brings back memories of Newport Folk Fest last summer. I do wish "He Was
a Friend of Mine" wasn't on there; it always seemed to me not the best, kind
of like Tonight I Think I'm Gonna Go Downtown... I guess she needs at least
one boring song per video.

Does anyone know (last random topic) whether there's any special
significance to her adding "alone" to "There ain't no place in Chicago where
a child can go" in IAHLWYG? I noticed her doing that on both OV2 and DBS,
and I really like it, any new Nanci inflection is welcome, but I wondered if
there was some specific incident she was referring to or what.

OK, enough. Sorry this is so long,

Tracy

Nanci did a short interview with Terry Wogan this morning.
Nanci told how she was dragged to her grandparents house to see Buddy Holly
and the Crickets on the Ed Sullivan show when she was four years old and
what an influence they were on her.

She was also asked about the songs that made her an"international star"
(Kathy Mattea's version of LATFAD and From A Distance"

But most importantly Nanci said she is playing four nights at the Royal
Albert Hall with the LSO in May.

To satisfy the trainspotter in me could anyone tell me the names of the
remixers responsible for the revisited CD?

Subject: NN: re:"knew her well?"
   Date: Thu, 23 Sep 1999 08:56:47 -0700 (PDT)
   From: Bob Riegner (rg48@yahoo.com>

Dear Netters-

"And maybe you were thinking
That you thought you knew me well.
But no one ever knows the heart of anyone else"

Who would of thought that that little skinny girl
running and spinning around the back yard trying to
play the guitar, in Austin, TX so many years ago (from
the video OVOR) would someday surround herself with
brilliant musicians in her own Blue Moon Orchestra and
stand in front of the London Symphony Orchestra and
thrill and mesmerize us with her magnificent songs and voice?
Other netters have described the music on this album
better than I could, but let me tell you we have just
scratched the service of 'knowing' this woman well.

Like all truly great artists, Nanci isn't satisfied
with the status quo--she is an explorer, a crusader,
and a risk taker, and the best thing is she takes us
along with her. Most of it we love, some we like, some
were not so sure about--but none of it is boring, and
all has the touch of a genious.

We should applaud her crusade to preserve 'folk' music.
We should be happy that she is promoting the great
music of Buddy Holly. Buddy Holly, what was he 22, 23
when he died? What music we have missed by his tragic
death. The same with Kate Wolf. What if Dylan had
died in his motorcycle accident after he recorded
Blonde on Blonde? Nanci makes us think about these things.

Although loving all her albums, I've always considered
that she had 3 masterpieces: 1) Flyer 2)Other Voices,
Other Rooms 3) Last of the True Believers. Well, I
now officially add a 4th masterpiece: The Dustbowl Symphony.

I don't know how many more paths this lady will
explore, but I want to be there when she does.

Maybe she will help us "learn to fly away again."

Bob Riegner

I was wondering if the US release of the OV2 video
are the same as the BBC TV program earlier this year.

The TV program lasted about 1 hour, and included these songs:

Wall Of Death
Trouble In The Fields
Who Knows Where The Time Goes
Canadian Whiskey
Kumbaya
Dress Of Laces
Outbound Plane
Never Be The Sun
He Was A Friend Of Mine
Hard Times
Road To Aberdeen

Is this the same as the released video?

Nanci's been saying 'we hope to get it out this year' as far back as
'87, (i think) and nothing's happened! why not? there's only so mnay
times you can read the first four chapters. no, that's a lie, iyou can
read them over and over...but it sure would be roses to find out what
happens. or we could hold a competition for somebody to write an ending
to it...that would be 'interesting'.

Now mr pugsley. i have a dad who was able to recognise nanci on the
radio this morning. he ran through tomy room with his hands of his ears.
said he was protecting his sanity. I heard 'some' of nance tlaking to
terry this morning. really short interview, when i tuned in she was
talking about her 'country' hits in ireland. she then talked a little
about recording dustbowl. now listen up - i'll quote what she said about
uk dates.

TERRY: (after talking about the lso) You're also going to be doing some
spring dates in london, with the london symphony orchestra?

NANCI: Yeah! we're taking it all back home to the albert hall which used
to be the london symphony's home, now of ocurse it's the barbican
center, we're gunna come back for a homecoming for four days in may, i
think may.

Now, whilst ms parr will be jumping up and down with joy and making
plans to stalk the staff at the albert hall for front row seats...those
of us else where will be crying...i'm crying...It's open to
interpretation, but it sounded like london was the only dates she'd be
doing...NO!!!! NOT FAIR!!!! i CANNOT get to LONDON!!! no WAY!!! though
maybe she just mentioned london because they'd been talkign about the
symphony, abbey road etc...or maybe that's just the only definetly
planned date just now. maybe it'll turn into a bigger tour anywa. if
those of us too far north of london make petitions or something....

I also have to miss tom russell cuz i'm going to see MCC that night?
anybody else seeing her in glasgow?
