Missed that one, but she was on Radio 2 LAST Saturday afternoon, on the
'Saturday Music Show' 3:30-5.30pm (formerly the Johnnie Walker show before his
much lamented depature).
Sadly, I only caught the last two minutes of the interview when she introduced

Nothing worse than missing your favourite lady live on the radio... :o(
Thanks for the notification of the Bob Harris show. Looks like Nanci's been
putting in some serious promotion work for DBS.

Nanci was also on Radio 2 last Saturday, live from Nashville, on the Tom
Robinson show. She sang four songs on the show, just Nanci & guitar: Listen

wonderful. Glad I got it taped!

Dear all,
First up, Junior Brown . I love 'Guit With It' but I would
say it's definately an in-car experience. Crusing through
country roads with that mad guitar playing. I have to say
I really like the song 'My Wife Thinks You're Dead', it
takes some real country cliches, dead people, adultery The
Law and makes 'em shiny and new....
Second Nanci in London, I saw nanci at the RAH a few years
ago and it was one of my all time favourite gigs. It's a great
venue, kind of faded glory thing (a bit like England, ha!)
although I understand they're doing it up, which IMHO would
be a shame, I like a bit of shabbiness. And jenny, you've got
till May to get an email pal in London and get yourself
invited down there to stay!
Thirdly, I just want to say that parts of 'Revi(led)sited' are
really growing on me. Especially the extending mix of LNGH,
my SO was bopping aroung the living room to that, and, believe
it or not, St Teresa. Has anyone listened to the end of this? It
comes over all New Order-ish (the band not the regime!) and
pretty groovy. I've even put it on my latest compilation tape.
I can see no reason why even songs about suicide have to be
slow folk-type ballads...
All the best to you all.

Subject: NN: OVOR2 video & DBS
Date: Fri, 24 Sep 1999 10:03:40 EDT
From: Tastho@aol.com
Hey Folks,
Got my copy of the OVOR2 video in the mail yesterday, and popped it in the VCR
as soon as I got home from work (before I even kicked off my shoes). The video
was edited well, and I had a little sing along in the living room while
watching. I rewound and watched Nanci sing "The Road To Aberdeen" about 4
times. God, that's good stuff!
I was hoping the song Nanci did with Dave Van Ronk would be included on the
video, but no such luck. Anyone who saw these shows remember the name of this
song? I remember that Dave saying that a friend of his had written the song at
a fairly young age. My mom and I commented that this kid must have been an old
soul to have written the song at that age. You'd think that I'd remember the
title, what with liking the song the way I did...
I work with a fellow that has less than flattering things to say about Nanci's
voice, so I've made it a mission to show him the error of his ways. I made him
his own personal copy of "The Best Of Nanci Griffith: To Hear Her Is To Love
Her" - compiled by me. He swears he's given it a listen, but I'm not so sure. I
also drive the lunch caravan often, making sure that there is a Nanci tape in
the deck on the way. This fella also has a radio show, and received a DBS
promo. A few mornings ago, he peeked his head in my office and confessed that
DBS is a great album. HA HA - mission acomplished!!

From: "John Davis" (j.davis@virgin.net>
I was amazed to read Peter Wilde's post about ejecting a tape of Flyer only
to hear Nanci still singing (on the radio, for those who didn't catch the
post). Well, the day before Peter's spooky experience I was travelling up
the motorway towards Birmingham (West Midlands, not Alambama!) when the
sound of the drumsticks being dropped at the end of This Heart prompted me
to push eject. Straight away the car was filled with the sound of Turn
Around from OVOR. It took me a couple of seconds of cerebral confusion
before I realised that the track was being played on local radio (which in
itself is quite rare, but moreso because it must rate as one of nanci's
lesser known and played cuts)!
We're still waiting for DBS in the UK, does anyone have the definitive
release date? My local store reckons this coming Monday. Like others I was
initially underwhelmed at what I thought might be a MOR marketing ploy
rehash of predominantly previously released material but reports from US
nancinetters so far suggest that the CD is yet another gem from our heroine.
I can't wait!

I checked it last week and in the Netherlands it should be released today,
but I was to late home to check it at the store. I think this will be the
European date, but I'm not sure.
I think this is strange, because I bought OV2 a few days before the release

Hi Every one! I am writing because I am just new ( kind of again ) to the
Net. I was on the digest in the past, but have been off it for quite a
while. I just saw Nanci on David Letterman. WOW the things you miss while
you are sleeping. I was so glad to see that and shame on me, I had no idea
she had a new CD in the making! ( or should I say already made) Anyway,
I am a 30ish gal from the middle west. Specifically Des Moines. Social
worker by trade ( the child protection sort) I've listened to Nanci for a
long time now. The initial turn on was the Evening with the Chieftains
where she sings red is the rose. ( being of Irish decent my favorite Irish
tune) It was shortly after that my good friend, Shelly Blue, provided me
with one fair summer eve and I was hooked, lined, and sinkered.
Unfortunately, I do not hear her much on air play around here. Only rarely
on KUNI public radio. She has been here once with the crickets, it was so
fabo that I cried! I really hope she makes it back soon :-) take care KIM

OK, this sounds really cheesey, but last thursday i was getting ready to
go out somewhere and i had an urge to turn on the radio. looked at the
clock and realist 'bob harris country' was on. it's unusual for me to
listen to this show, although i always listne on saturday nights,
because i always forget it's on. so, i turned it on and suddenly heard
the opening chords to 'talk to me while i'm listening'...i always get
these vibes...

I don't know the release date, i pre-ordered my copy from a mail order
company in kent. they got it out to me three days after us release. if
you want the number, let me know. i think they'd probably be able to get
it out to you within a day.
Oh and by the way, whoever posted about the box titled 'the
jones'...weird, that's my surname (please, no 'jenny jones' is a talk
show/old folks song jokes) , would be cool to get a scan!!

I've always interpreted the phrase "there's a light beyond these woods"
with the idea that we should "look past our own back yard." Don't limit
yourself to what you see in front of you (these woods), there's a whole
world out there (and perhaps the light is the sign or the beacon that tells
us so).
Re: Rob's mention of Diane Zeigler -- Diane also was chosen to showcase at
Falcon Ridge Folk Festival, AND Christine Lavin handpicked her as an
exciting new artist to be featured on the Stealth (compilation) CD
(http://stealth.songs.com).
I saw Pete & Maura Kennedy perform the other night. (As you probably know,
both were in the Blue Moon Orchestra several years back and are amazing
musicians.) If you've never seen them but have the opportunity, do so. They
truly create a special chemistry on stage that is like no other I've
witnessed. It's obvious that they love each other, making music, being on
the road, and waxing poetic. . .

It's probably a bit early for the Albert Hall to have confirmation about
this. They certainly didn't know anything about it last time I enquired.
But hearing Nanci herself say that this was happening has restored my
confidence that we *will* be hearing her in London with the LSO - sometime!

I read on the NN something about the multi-medea on the disc and on the
cover is something about Weblink and a logo of MacroMedia(I think, but it so
small), but when I put it in the CD-rom drive, windows indicates that there
are only 14 soundfiles on the CD and no other file.
Did anyone in Europe already check this?

The executable file is a Macromedia Director script with just one
frame, it thanks you for buying the cd and then asks if you want to
go to the Elektra site or just quit. At the site
(http://www.elektra.com/weblink/artist/griffith.html) you can sign up
for the "Nanci Griffith Mailing List" whatever that is. (I did
anyway).
After signing up you can go to the Nanci page at Elektra
(http://www.elektra.com/cgi-bin/WebObjects/elektra/Home.woa/-/Artist.w
o?ID=249) which looks pretty good. It has been updated with Dust
Bowl stuff, and has a devilish little photo of Nanci.
Now to work, but at least i have good music to listen to.

Ok, one "car thought" that actually stayed with me...
I love the cello on the intro to "Not My Way Home" - it is haunting. Then
there is that moment between the cello and the beginning of the song. To
me, that moment is just like the moment before you kiss the love of your
life who you haven't seen for 2 weeks. You know what is coming and how good
it will feel, but still, your breath catches with the anticipation and your
heart skips a beat. No matter how many times I listen to this song, I will
still hold my breath in that moment of silence. Beautiful...

Subject: NN: Nanci on UK radio
Date: Sun, 26 Sep 99 01:13:54 +0100
From: John Edward Graveling (kai21@dial.pipex.com>
The very wonderful Bob Harris (the top radio jock in the UK) has just
done a three hour broadcast live from Nashville. He featured great music
and a number of artists popped in to the studio to talk with him.
Included amongst them was Nanci. She talked briefly about how "The Dust
Bowl Symphony" had been the realisation of a musical dream and how it was
recorded live in 4 days in April of this year. She wanted it to represent
her 25 years in the business, and hence the song selection, from hits
like "Love At The Five And Dime" to social commentary, "It's A Hard Life"
and "Trouble In The Fields", which Bob then played. Nanci talked about
the Buddy Holly song "Tell Me How" and how she tried to record and get
the same feel Buddy had when he was recording, what turned out to be his
final works, all those years ago. Bob finished by asking which track
Nanci would like him to play, and she chose "Tell Me How". Nanci did
confirm that she would be playing 4 nights with the London Symphony
Orchestra, at their former home, The Royal Albert Hall next May. During
her chat she talked about Austin City Limits and how financially striken
the programme is, they are having fund raisers to keep PBS programmes
alive and on air. Bob mentioned he had seen her play with the Crickets on
ACL this week, he was stunned when she said it was recorded three years
ago, but she did say it was her favourite ACL, the best recording she had
ever done for the programme. She was due to do a show this summer with
the Austin Symphony for ACL, but it was cancelled due to lack of funds.

Hi everyone,
I just spent the last twenty minutes listening to nanci talk to Bob
Harris in Nashville, live on radio two. Man, did she sound happy!! They
started off talking about Austin City Limits, how it's filmed, produced
etc, then onto discussing how lucky we are in the UK to have the BBC.
which brought in news time nicely. then on to hearing 'trouble in the
fields' from Dustbowl. Then nanci talked about recording dustbowl, it
only took four days (?), then bob asked her the question i've been dying
to know the answer to ; 'how much were you involved in the arranging of
the songs'. apparently very, very involved. she spoke about arranging
songs on the computer for orchestra and how cool that was. just to play
in something and have that as an oboe part. i don't see it meeself, i
hate 'puters for writing music. we have them in school. but
anyway...then he asked her another really good question about tours.
'are you coming to the UK?', she answered again with the london dates. i
am really going to have to write and beg her to come to glasgow i
think...The they talked about US touring and opening that place in
lubbock witht the crickets...And that was it. Again, my crackly speakers
linked me to another universe, another place, another time and then it
was gone....i hope it comes back around. i have to hear this symphony
live.

Hi to all....
I made the purchase tonight....cannot quit playing it! My feelings about the
CD echo all of yours! It is fabulous! I played it and my 11 year old
daughter and I drove around town just absorbing the experience. "This is
really good, mom! Even the song about Buddy Holly..." Cracked me up, as kids
so often do.
I'd like to comment further and offer individual insight, but I don't want to
say the same old thing. There were a couple of detailed and knowledgeable
reviews offered on Nancinet about this material within recent days, and, I,
in my shortsighted "brilliance" (gulp) just cleaned out my "personal filing

kind as to resend those commentaries to me? I feel like a jerk for asking,
but would like to see them again to compare thoughts.
Please send them to VickiStein@aol.com.
Thank Yewwww....

Again, I apologize for not thinking ahead, but if you would send them my way,
I would be very grateful.

That's still probably my favorite of hers, too. Unless you find it used,
good luck... But, I have hopes it may be reissued. When she played the Ark
with Bruce about a year ago I asked her about that, and she said maybe if her
then-upcoming cd on Rykodisc did well, they might reissue her out of print
stuff. Rykodisc is pretty big on reissues anyway. Obviously, "What I Deserve"
has been a success, critically and commercially, so it's a possibilty. Might
not hurt to send some emails to Rykodisc campaigning for it.
