how timely! I just received Ms. Chambers on a tape a fellow nanci netter and
friend made me! I've been listening to it non stop in the car!! I also
suggest checking her out... she's quite a songwriter. And her voice reminds
me of Mary Karlzen...

As an Aussie I was pleased to see Kasey"s first cd
"The Captain" mentioned by Dave Dwyer. I have had this cd
for quite awhile and can only suggest that you give it a listen. Kasey
Chambers sang lead for many years in a
family based group, "The Dead Ringer Band", doing mainly
what we aussies call "Pub Rock". Last year she released
"The Captain", she wrote all the tracks and has something
of that "Little Girl" sound we associate with Nanci. Kasey
was awarded Best Album, Best Female Artist etc at our
Country Music Awards last year. I cant recomend this cd
too highly, and judging from the musical tastes of a lot of
Nanci Netters, I feel sure many of you would find a lot to
like about Kasey Chambers. I was able to see Willie Nelson
at our Country Music Awards, What an exceptional talent
he is, a guitar picker extrordinaire, my only regret was that
Emmylou wasnt there backing him. Please email me if you
have any queries re Kasey. ......Barry Medway.

Heard on the radio that today (10/13/00) is Paul Simon's 59th
birthday. I remember how much it pained me when he turned 40!
Anyway, since PS is one of my all-time favorites (w/ or w/out G), I
bought it. I've gone through it only a couple of times, but I gotta
say that while I DO appreciate the introspection, I'm having a little
trouble warming up to it. I'll stick with it for a little longer.

Subject: NN: Gavin Leaves Americana
Date: Sun, 15 Oct 2000 09:38:20 -0400
From: Steve Robertson (stever@mindspring.com>
Hi Folks,
Over on the TVZ list, one of the regulars received an e-mail from Jessie
Scott (the Americana editor at Gavin magazine) to the effect that Gavin was
going to stop publishing an Americana chart as of Oct. 13.
For those of you who haven't followed the Americana format since its
inception, someone at Gavin came up with the name about five years ago and
trademarked it- probably hoping to charge a license fee for its use at some
point. In my opinion, it has always been an inaccurate chart, because the
number of radio stations reporting is too small to constitute an accurate
sample.
The questions now are: Should we keep the Americana name for this musical
category? How do we disconnect the music business from commercial radio? Or,
in other words, how do talented musicians reach their audience without
relying on commercial radio airplay?
While checking to see if this information had been posted to any websites, I
ran across a Web survey of Americana fans. I don't know if this survey pops
up for every visitor to this site, or just random visitors, but it won't
hurt to give it a try:

Hi Steve & everyone --
I didn't know Gavin had a trademark on the term "Americana." But, I don't
think the name will go away just because they drop the chart. Not that it
really matters, it's such a loose category it really doesn't mean much. At
the 2000 South X Southwest Music Conference in Austin, an organization was
chartered under the name "Americana Music Association" with the mission to
provide a forum for the advocacy of Americana music, to promote public
awareness of this genre, and to support the creative and economic viability
of professionals in this field. The organization is made up of artists,
industry professionals, venue operators, and others with an interest in
sharing, and developing resources to expand the audience for Americana
music.
While it remains to be seen whether this group can achieve it's goals given
the width of the genre, it's encouraging to see folks like Sam Bush, Lucinda
Williams, Jack Emerson
(E-Squared), Grant Alden(No Depression), Jesse Scott (Gavin) and others
counted among its early membership. In case anyone is interested--and there
are lots of folks here who probably should join--the first annual meeting
will be held in a couple of weeks, November 10-11, at the new Hilton Suites
Hotel in Downtown Nashville. Live music will be offered both days, with
performances scheduled for the conference site and for adjoining clubs. Four
workshop-style sessions are scheduled for Saturday afternoon, discussing
different facets of the music business. There is more information at their
website: http://www.americanamusic.org/news.html

Subject: NN: Austinites (non nanci)
Date: Sun, 15 Oct 2000 13:57:48 EDT
From: Poetmuse@aol.com
Morning all-
I trust the weekend finds us all healthy and happy.
I came across an article on the web the other day and thought I'd comment on
it and perhaps get some insights from people who live there.. I KNOW we have
lurkers who live in Austin.. I met half of you when I went there!
Basically the article commented on how Austin was suffering "growing pains"
and how the city was basically experiencing too high an influx of people and
companies. Mainly, high tech companies. It basically said the computer world
was trying to do to Austin what they had done to Silicon Valley. And the
city was suffering from congestion, high rent, lack of places to live, etc.
Since I seriously considered going back to school in Austin (and still may in
the next few years) I'd like to get some input from a native on how well you
think your fine city will survive this influx of high tech and if it will rob
the city of it's college town charm and sensibilities.....
take care all-

I spend a lot of time in Austin. I graduated from UT's Journalism School,
one of my clients is a former head football coach there, my mother is in an
assisted living center in Austin and my brother's widow lives there. To
answer your question, it has already lost much of its "college town charm and
sensibilities." It is a big city, where houses are going for about three
times their worth. There is still some music there, but punk rules and many
of the folk musicians I knew personally who lived there have left Austin for
quieter and more affordable climes (the Hill Country town of Wimberley as
become the community of choice). I enjoy spending time in San Marcos, which
is a wonderful, small, Hill Country college town about 35 miles south of
Austin. I use the term "small" comparatively however because the enrollment
of the school (Southwest Texas State University) is the same as the
enrollment at UT-Austin when I went there back in the '60s. There are a
number of nice music venues there (Cheatham Street Warehouse is a legendary
hangout for Texas musicians) and just down the road in New Braunsfels is the
equally legendary Greune Hall.
By the way, spent Saturday in Shiner at another one of the Bochtoberfests
there, which has surpassed Kerrville as the finest music festival the state
has to offer (and it's only one day). The surprise of this year's festival
was Charlie Robinson--I was not that familiar with him, but what an
incredible singer-songwriter. Trish Murphy and Kelly Willis were wonderful as
always, the Mighty Mighty Bosstones were a revelation and Robert Earl Keen,
although devoid of some of the energy he displayed last year, still put on a
whale of a show. He does need a new album and some new material however, but
you still believe him when he sings "The road goes on forever and the party
never ends," which have become the codewords for this neck of the woods.

I visited Austin a couple of years ago, and while I didn't notice much
"college town charm and sensibilities" I did notice the fantastic
concentration of music in those two downtown streets.....even discounting
the punk bits. Night after night was a feast for those of us who pine for
anyone we've ever heard of to pass nearby....if I had the chance I'd be
deighted to move to Austin. I'd rent a small apartment right in the middle
of it all (on a quiet side-street if possible!). Drive to work - walk to the
pub!

Aaaaaah Austin, beautiful Austin!!!! My introduction to Austin was via three
very long years in the early 80's in beautiful, scenic Killeen (YUKKKKK!!),
while my husband had a command at Ft.Hood. What a culture shock coming from
my beautiful home country in Germany to a place that had no trees, no real
grass.... The few trips we took into Austin for dinner or music were the only
highlights of our dreary existence down there (aside from the birth of our
daughter, of course). Our friends bought a house on "the lake" in Austin a
couple of years ago, and we're planning on spending Thanksgiving with them this
year. Time to reassess the place........

Any comments about Radney Foster? A high school
buddy of mine from the early 70s has been playing
guitar for Jack Ingram, but recently switched and, from
what I can find on the net, is playing with Radney Foster,
formerly of Foster and Lloyd. I have trouble keeping up
with my old friend, Mike McAdam, because he keeps
quite busy in Nashville. The information about Foster
sounds inviting.
