Dear Friends,
Did anybody hear the announcement by someone on the New Year special last
night that Nanci would be a guest on his show this coming week? I only
started listening when Nanci was mentioned----too late to get his name or
details.

I heard Don McLean say he would be in a 1 and 1/2 hr PBS special in March
with Garth Brooks and Nanci Griffith. Anyone else confirm more to this?

I work for a software company and we started work on the Y2K problem in

traditions so i won't go into it myself...Here the first footing tradition
is still going on...even though it's nearly 8pm on the big day...and i
expect in my house it will be full for a gid few hours mare. There's
fiddling, and penny-whistling and a good ammount of whisky consumption going
on... Oh, and thankyew shawn for finally diagnosing me with chin rest

Ah, the lot of the poor programmer. We get all the heat when things go wrong,
and hear nothing when things go right. Worse yet, we've been accused of
overhyping potential problems when thing go right. I guess our only
concellation
is that our rates have been doubled because of good old Y2K.

Hi Gang,
Happy New Year to everyone!! Just wondering...At Nanci's most recent
concert in Pittsburgh she mentioned from the stage that she would be leaving
today for Cambodia and Vietnam to visit hospitals and factories on behalf of
the Landmine Free World Organization. Anybody know if this trip has received
or will receive any media coverage? It seems to me that this would make a
wonderful human interest story.
Thanks, ~Lisa

Don't know what media coverage is intended but I did hear somewhere this
past weekend that Sheryl Crow will be on the same tour. There have been
several shows to promote this cause here in the U.S.

I don't think Nanci has big enough hair or boobs to garner much
mainstream media attention no matter what she does. I'm just glad
she is doing something so worthwhile. I'm sure those of us who care
will hear something of it. Just don't look for Sam Donaldson or
Oprah to notice.

Yes to Pete, who, when I was 15, introduced me to live folk music (I'd
heard the Almanacs on 78s and Woody G) when he played his banjo for the
kids and staff at University Settlement Camp in Beacon, NY, 1955, and
provided me with my first set of 5-string banjo strings and "How to Play
the 5-string Banjo," (by Pete himself). A seminal moment in my
existence. Amazing grace!
Happy Millennium.

I first saw Pete Seeger live in 1971 on the Fresno State campus. Campus unrest,
anti-war demonstrations, and rampant Pot smoke were everywhere. I was a scared,
lonely, small town 17 year old, away in the cold big city (yes to me Fresno was
a very big city), at his first year of college. For that short time, listening
to Pete and band, I was swept up and into a living organism, singing along with
the rest of the crowd. I was amazed and transported, and incredulous that music
that wasn't coming out of a mountain of Fender amps could be so moving. I
actually felt a physical rush run up and down my spine.

Mom had a few old Folkways records that I grew up on. At the same time (mid
60's) he had his own show on Public Television's ch 13 in NYC. I'll never
forget when he showed us how to make a wooden recorder. I learned the
recorder and then graduated to the flute, whereupon my musical career
started!

Subject: NN: Top Ten for 1999

From: "Mike Barrett" (mikebarrettuk@hotmail.com>
My top ten for last year -
1. Nanci - Dust Bowl Symphony
Unquestionably the number one, nothing else comes close. A
beautiful album.
2. Rankins - Uprooted
A fine album from an excellent group, who are also a first class
live act.
3. Dwight Yoakam - Last Chance For A Thousand Years
Basically a greatest hits of the 90s package with a few new tracks.
An excellent collection.
4. Claudia Church - Claudia Church
Very good country/pop from Mrs Rodney Crowell.
5. Mandy Barnett - I've Got A Right To Cry
Lovely album with some real stand-out tracks. Quite a jazzy feel
to a lot of it.
6. Various Artists - Sound Of Wood And Steel 2
Excellent instrumentals, including Nanci doing "A Year Down In New
Orleans"
7. Kate Campbell - Rosaryville
Very good album, bought purely on the basis of NN recommendations.
8. Nanci - Revisited
Sorry but I've come to quite like this. Some mixes are very
effective, others are hilarious.
9 Asleep At The Wheel - Ride With Bob
Good old fashioned country music, and nothing at all wrong with
that.
10 Marty Stuart - The Pilgrim
Under-rated concept album from a singer I've never had much time
for before.
Best wishes and a happy and prosperous 2000 to everyone,
Mike Barrett

And let's not forget that it was the great Scottish poet- Robbie Burns-
who supplied us with the benediction for this and every new year. You
can find the complete lyrics to "Auld Lang Syne" (and lots of other good
stuff) at this location:

Ian- is this last verse a reference to the "First Footing" tradition?

it could well be ........ a willie-waught is a draught of ale btw...... or
any drink will do for a Scot!

Ahhh...... That makes sense. I thought, since they were holding hands,
that a "waught" might refer to a walk- or a stroll in the moonlight.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

that pile of vinyl and dig the damn thing out..... might take until midnight
if I'm lucky,
Happy new one to everyone and oh yes! Ashley Mc A***ole (as he has been
referred to here in the past) was really brilliant at Wolftrap all those
years ago. There was a terrifying moment when Nanci put down her guitar
during the finale with the Chieftains and Ashley clogged so close to it in
his huge army issue "bov-ver" boots that we all thought it would be reduced
to kindling. He also revealed to many of us in the good seats just exactly
what a Scotsman (at least a Cape Breton Scotsman) wears under his kilt. It
was not a pretty sight! By the way there is someone on this list who knows
exactly what happened that night and why Nanci jumped ship and they promised
that they would tell all one day when tempers had cooled. Well........ we
are still waiting, hint hint!! I have been a big Ashley fan ever since, he
is great! (Natalie McMaster is also worth checking out if you like that Cape
Breton scottish fiddle thing, she's also a lot prettier than Mr M).

1. Kate Campbell Rosaryville
This album is as good as anything I have heard of hers. Excellent
2. Lucy Kaplansky Ten Year Night
If you like Lucy, you will love this one.
3. Ani Difranco Up, Up, Up, Up, Up, Up
Although Ani's talent is undeniable, I have not been much of a fan of
hers.
This album is more along my tastes.
4. Linda Ronstadt, Emmylou Harris Western Wall
This album seems to bring out what I like best about each of these
artists.
5. The Chieftains tears of stone
I love the various lead singers they included as well as the song
selection.
6. Emmylou Harris, Linda Ronstadt, Dolly Parton Trio II
This came as a little bit of a surprise to me. The three artists do a
great job supporting each other.
7. Cliff Eberhardt borders
I'm a big fan of his so it would be hard to disappoint me. Although not
his best, very nice album.
8. Alison Krauss Forget About It
Contrary to some initial negative reviews from this list, I love this
album.
9. Cheryl Wheeler Sylvia Hotel
I'm also a big fan of hers. This album has some of my all time favorites
as well as a couple that are just all right
10. Catie Curtis Crash Course in Roses
I have not listened to this one that much yet, but it does not seem to be
as nice as her previous work but still worth it.
I have not yet purchased Nanci's latest so it is absent because I don't have
it.
Patty Larkin released a new album, "A Gogo". That is not included because it
is
a "Best of ..." sort of album but very good.
Happy New Year everyone. I wish all of you the best in health and happiness!

Dear all,
Happy new year to one and all. I watched the fireworks
go off around the world on tv (I think Paris had the best
by a whisker) and then stepped outside to listen to the
incredible noise (and we were in the countryside) as it
seemed everybody set their fireworks off together. Then
I stepped back in and the hostess had put 'Flyer' on the
the CD player, I didn't even know she liked Nanci, and
despite groans from a couple of heathen philistines present
a few of us danced about for a couple of minutes before the plaintive
cries of my 2 yr-old calling from upstairs ("I don't like the
loud ones I only like the round and rounds..." - he's a fan
of Catherine Wheels...) brought be back to earth, well nearly,
after two large champagne and brandies it was difficult for
anything to bring be back completely...
Anyway, it was nice while it lasted and now I'm back
marking essays...ho hum.
Peace, love and understanding for the new year and beyond...

Howdy, gang!
Last night on KGSR-Austin there was an E-Town show featuring Matthew
Ryan and then Nanci and the Blue Moon Orchestra. She played "across The
Great Divide", "Not My Way Home", something else, interviewed a while, then
played "Well All Right". This was surely a rerun, but I was wondering when
this show was originally taped. Just curious, don't respond out of habit
unless you really want to. ;-)
My fiance and I were talking about Nanci's music the other day and I
mentioned that in "Goodnight To A Mother's Dream" she sings of having a
good life, but would trade it all away just to hear a loved one say, "I
love you too". That makes it even more special when Caron and I say it
now. We were going to go put that song on the stereo but got, uh,
sidetracked. ;-) Maybe next week.
It's sunny, clear and blue in Austin. Wish you were here.
