Interlochen in July!!? YaHOO! Looks like one long summer weekend penciled in
for us already. It'll be a thrill to hear Nanci w/symphony, but I still can't
embrace DBS as much as some of you have. Played it this morning and had to
follow it up with PIMW. 'Poet' sounded better than ever.

Personally, I am just trying to get through Feb 28. Then we can relax. I
had 350 people working on the problem (in addition to their day jobs) and
trust me.....the problem was real.

The website for John's record label, Oh Boy Records, is a good source of
info. You can find it here:

It's interesting reading all the recent posts about the 'legendary' John
Prine. Coincidentally he is playing a live show, here in London, tomorrow
night, with Iris DeMent. It promises to be some show, and I'm going to be
lucky enough to meet them both afterwards. I'll post a review on Sunday.

Hi, NanciNetters.

A question for all your good ears out there.
John Sayle's wonderful recent film, LIMBO, boasts several extraordinary
performances. Among them is Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio's--which includes her
own singing. She sing's four songs: BETTER OFF WITHOUT YOU (Marshall Chapman
et al.), YOU NEVER CAN TELL (Chuck Berry), LOOKIN' FOR THE HEART OF SATURDAY
NIGHT (Tom Waits) and DIMMING OF THE DAY (Richard Thompson). It gave me goose
bumps to see another talented, beautiful actress, who can actually sing! (I
remember the last time it happened with Michelle Pfeiffer in "The Fabulous
Baker Boys".) My question is this: who does she sound like? I've watched the
movie several times (love that
ending!) and listened to the cd soundtrack, trying to think of whose voice she
reminds me. My best guess is Bonnie Koloc, a wonderful singer-songwriter from
the 70's and 80's. Have any of you seen LIMBO and do you have any thoughts
about my question? Thanks.

   From: hickorywind@inos.com (Kenneth A. Steffel)

The Best of all good things, to all of you NNetters in 2000. It's just 1000
here in EST time zone. Weekend Edition Saturday just ended, by airing a
story, interview, on Vince Bell with a brief sound clip from Nanci
Griffith, about him and his music. I believe she has covered two of his
songs.

As I am sure most of you also know (I cant think of her name, his wife
perhaps? Sarah Wrightson Bell seems to be in the back of my minds memory)
But some woman is a NNetter and has posted info to the NNet on occasion
about Vince Bell, his latest record, (Phoenix) and his new book, in months
past, as well as I seem to recall an apperance or two.

This is lifted from the NPR site, (and edited)
"On NPR's Weekend Edition Saturday with Scott Simon, singer-songwriter
Vince Bell remakes himself, almost two decades after the accident that
nearly ended his career."

I was going to include the link to it for all of you, but todays show is
not posted on their website yet, as I just looked. For those of you that
may not know, their url is http://www.npr.org/ click on Find a Show,
scroll down to Weekend Edition Saturday, and it will take you to todays
show (in an hour or so, or more as it now seems), as soon as they post it.

I have let this letter ride, until now, it is now just past 1100: and it
still isn't posted, on NPR's site.

Be Kind to one another. Peace late. ken_steffel

       From: Steve Robertson (stever@mindspring.com>

Hey Folks-

Just picked up the current issue of "No Depression" and found some
terriffic news. In an article on the 25th anniversary of Austin City
Limits, Terry Lickona says:

----------------------------------

"Over the last four or five years we've had quite a bit of erosion,
where only about 60 percent of the PBS affiliates were carrying the show".

"So we made a decision this year that the only way to deal with that
problem was that starting with the 25th anniversary, we are offering the
show for free to any and all stations that want to carry it".

"Currently we're back up to about 92 percent of all the stations will
start scheduling the show again starting in February".

"There are also plans to sell shows from the archives on video, and to
release full length shows on CD. Both should be available in the late
spring of 2000, according to Lickona. He also has ideas on using the
internet to access the show's archives, but that is further down the road".

----------------------------------

Sounds like someone finally paid attention to one of my e-mail suggestions;>)

Steve Robertson

THAT is fantastic news! Would I be hoping for too much if they published
some of the shows in DVD? That's probably asking too much. (insert sigh.wav>

Actually I bet they will go with DVD as well as tape. That seems to be the
big thing now (even though I'm among the masses who don't have a player). I'm
hoping that eventually they release this stuff on request, if enough email,
etc. comes in. This could be very exciting.

Steve,

Who do we write to to let our wishes be known. I certainly would like to
be able to buy shows on tape or DVD but would want them to be complete
programs. The Austin City Limits CDs, best of E-Town and others are
compilations with one cut per artist. I hate that format. Their thinking
is that if at least one favorite artist is on the product you'll buy it.
But what they don't realize is that if you like a lot of the artists they'd
sell more by putting out a feature disc for each artist.

I sent my suggestions to ACL using the comment form on their website. My
ideal ACL video would be a compilation of all the ACL appearances by one
artist. In other words, Nanci's video would start with the 1985
half-hour, then move on to the next half-hour (the IWIWR show) and
continue through her entire career. Of course, Nanci has done more than
two hours on the show, so they would either have to edit it down to two
hours or make a Vol. I and a Vol. II.

As far as whether or not an email campaign for the release of complete Nanci
or (or other) shows would be effective, I have no idea. But it couldn't hurt.
For more info on Austin City Limits, it's at
Welcome to Austin Cyber Limits

I know there are people on this list that attend tapings and have played for
ACL. Maybe some of these insiders would know more about their plans?

There is an interview with Nanci at cdnow.com - re DBS. She was asked if this
was a result of writer's block (paraphrasing), and she responded that she is
doing lots of writing and sending songs to other artists.

Anyway, go to the reviews and interviews link if interested.

Sitting here looking at the wonderful Country Living ad, I had to look
really hard to see that these were shoes. One or two pairs?

Well, Ginrose, Nanci has very tiny feet with
exceptionally high arches and she is a little vain
about them as she has every right to be.
