From: nmrs@freeway.net
I will add a great big hooray for this date...we tried to see her the
last time but she cancelled.
Also, speaking of pictures, there are quite a few included with the
double John Prine CD that my husband got for Christmas of Nanci and
others from Other Voices Other Rooms recording sessions. He apparently
really enjoyed his time with Nanci.
And we got In Spite of Ourselves for Christmas, too. How about Iris and
John singing that at the Grammy Award Ceremony? (that is my sister's
idea, actually) Ha ha.
My current favorites: Kelly Willis and Lucy Kaplansky. I can't get
enough of either CD and it is all the fault of Nancinet! I have grown
to trust the recommendations found here and so far I haven't gone wrong.
Thanks to all of you.

Steve,
If ACL does put the archives on video or DVD, the folks on this list should
strongly lobby their public libraries to purchase copies for their
collections. Maybe even ACL would give libraries a price break on the
purchase.

2000 greetings, y'all:
Thanks to Kenn for posting this and the photo IS gorgeous. But then, it is
Nanci...
I'm wondering what y'all thought of the "would-be Emily Dickinson" copy?
Kind of took my breath away, having read the angst-ridden lady's work
obsessively at various points in my life. Hmmmmm ??
I'm also wondering when we're going to hear about the John Prine/Iris Dement
concert, although I know the reviewer's quite a busy guy. :)
BTW, Steve Robertson, my husband and I saw Stacey Earle a week ago and I
finally found out what everyone has been raving about. I thought she was
simply charming. Hadn't heard a note from her mouth before then, but now own
Simple Gearle and also got Stacey's autograph. She's very nice and
down-to-earth. Her husband, Mark Stewart (I think it's Stewart but am not
sure, sorry) accompanied her and also opened; he has a CD out. Stacey said
she recorded a new CD over Christmas that is now in the mixing stage; it will
be out as early as February or as late as April. She did a couple of songs
from it that sounded as good as the Simple Gearle stuff, but what do I know?
(Especially considering I finally got my own copy of Cold Dog Soup and it
seems to be stuck in my CD player...)
Hope everyone's either over the flu or that you don't get it.
Cate, it's a time of inconvenience, in Atlanta

Hi Cate, and anyone else interested in Stacey Earle,
In case you don't get the digest for her, here's some info on her new album,
I just got this evening.........
Stacey's new CD "Dancing With Them That Brung Me" is completed!! They worked
from noon till 3-4 in the morning for two weeks finishing it up. Stacey says
she and Mark are very proud of it. She will be doing the photos for the CD
next week.
Guest musicians on the CD include Byron House on bass on some tracks. He is
known to play with Jerry Douglas and he also played bass on Emmylou Harris'
Spyboy Tour. Other bass tracks were done by Mike Bub of the Del McCoury
Band. Mike Daly plays Lap Steel. And of course the Jewels are there: Mark
Stuart, Kyle Mims and Michael Web. The CD was produced by Stacey Earle and
Mark Stuart, co-produced by Michael Web.
See ya,
Beth
The CD should be available on the web site late February or the first week
of March. It could be May before it is available in stores.

Subject: NN: John Prine/Iris DeMent

From: John Edward Graveling (kai21@dial.pipex.com>
Saturday night brought the double headlining bill of Iris DeMent and John
Prine to London's Royal Festival Hall. Iris took the stage to a rapturous
reception from the sell out crowd (2,000). She opened with "Let The
Mystery Be" backing herself on acoustic guitar. She played sons from her
first two cd's, and switched with ease from guitar to grand piano, and
back. She also did "When My Mornin' Comes Around", "The Way I Should" and
"Walking Home" from her last release of three years ago. She was given a
thunderous reception at the end and earned an encore, she had seemed
quite ill at ease at times, but came back to the stage with the quip,
"well John's not quite ready, he's still doing his hair".She then gave us
"Our Town".
John then took the stage, backed by Dave Jacques on double bass and Jason
Wilbur on guitars and mandolin. He opened with "Spanish Pipedream" and
covered most of his better known songs in the following two hours.
Particular highlights were "Far From Me", "Sam Stone", "Jesus The Missing
Years" and an absolutely raucous "Lake Marie", the moving "Souvenirs",
"Dear Abby" with some new words thrown in and his family anthem,
"Paradise". This was particularly moving to me, as we were with his
cousin (who is marrying a friend of mine - old story now), and she was
good enough to take us backstage afterwards to meet John. That finished
an excellent evening for me, meeting, after thirty years of listening,
one of my true musical heroes. The section of the show where John brought
out Iris to sing harmony on the songs from his duet cd "In Spite Of
Ourselves" was memorable. Iris seemed totally suited to the role and has
rarely sounded better, and the title track simply brought the house down.
If this tour comes anywhere near you, go!!!!!

wow.
I was just in the process of deciding on a time to consider a weekend
visit to NY and was bout to book a flight for 24th Feb. So having seen
this I might just delay it for a couple of weeks....I _was_ going to ask
if anyone knew any good venues around where there might be some decent
folk/country - or even "folkabilly" music but I guess I don't need to
now.
Anyone local know if there's public transportation to Tarrytown from NY
- and, more importantly, whether it runs late enough at night to return
after a concert? How big is the venue?
Might make 2 Nanci concerts this year....Croydon in May too I hope
I hope Jenni has seen the post and has come down to earth again after
finding a date in Glasgow after all!

there is indeed transportation from Tarrytown to NYC, on the Metro
Nother line that runs from Grand Central. The last train out of
Tarrytown to NYC was at about midnight 2 years ago. I mised it but
that is another story and had to take a cab back to Manhattan, which
ultimately Metro NOrth paid for cause it was thier fault I missed the
train. The venue is a lovely old theatre, don't remember how large,
they are on the web somewhere, I'll hunt it up later. Also,
Tarrytown is built on a fairly steep hill and the train station is at
the bottom. There are a lot of cabs that hang out there. Two years
ago I walked up to the Music Hall but if I were to go this year I
would have to take a cab cause my arthritis is a lot worse. But, it
is a wonderful venue and it was there that i heard what was for me
the best Nanci/HOoker duet of Gulf coast Highway.

From: Michael Devlin (thefolks@mmreview.com>
>She was given a thunderous reception at the end and earned an encore,
>she had seemed quite ill at ease at times,
Iris is an intense performer to say the least. The night I saw her, she
tended to take a few nervous practice swipes above the strings of her
guitar before starting songs early in the set. She had a band with her
and during the performance she broke two strings. She handed off her
guitar and drolly played air guitar in the instrumental break of one of
her songs. She then, with absolute sincerity, offered to give refunds to
anyone who wanted their money back for enduring such guitar problems. Of
course...no takers! The show was great. Iris is totally without a
protective layer of schtick, which makes her seem vulnerable and
incredibly strong at the same time. I had the chance to meet her and
later interview her for our magazine...I'm still pinching myself!
Speaking of pinching myself...there will be an interview with Kate
Campbell in the next Music Matters Review...another goddess of being real!

I rang the Albert Hall today to try and find out about the 29th May date
that I've seen in several places. They told me that no contracts have
yet been signed and that consequently no bookings can be accepted. They
suggested I try at the end of the week.....
I'm also aiming to go to the Croydon concert at the Fairfield Hall, 10th
May, but they told me that they wouldn't be taking bookings before the
end of the month at the earliest.
Frustrating when I'm hearing from other people that they've already
booked for other venues!

From: Shawn Kimbro (kimbro@planetc.com>
Darryl Scott - FAMILY TREE
Scott's first album, ALOHA FROM NASHVILLE was one of my favorites of
1998 on the strength of the bluesy "Ballad of Martha White." I just
picked up his latest, FAMILY TREE and I love it. Visionary song
writing, inspired musicians, and home-grown fun make this a real
sing-along. My favorite song is "In My Father's Hose" in which Scott's
dad gives him the best advice I've heard in a while. He says, "a good
song never comes to those who chase, it comes to those who listen."
FAMILY TREE makes it obvious that Scott's been listening.
Blaze Foley - LIVE AT THE AUSTIN OUTHOUSE
Remember back when Lucinda Williams' CAR WHEELS ON A GRAVEL ROAD came
out and we all whispered that "Drunken Angel" was about Townes Van
Zandt? Well, Lucinda says it's about Blaze Foley the mysterious
musician Townes also wrote about in "Blaze's Blues." This may be the
only album we'll ever hear from this enigmatic song writer who has now
become an Austin cult figure. It was recorded live in 1988, one month
before he Foley was killed in an argument over a bad check. With Sarah
Elizabeth Campbell along for harmony, this is the time to check out the
artist who has inspired the tribute by the best lyricists in the
business.
R.B. Morris - ZEKE AND THE WHEEL
Morris is an acquaintance who I sometimes run into at Knoxville music
spots. It's taken me a long time to take him seriously enough to buy
his albums. Big mistake. Morris just might be the John Prine of the
next decade, ZEKE AND THE WHEEL is that good. A published poet and
playwright, Morris puts his word-smithing talents to good use by taking
the fervor of a tent revival, lacing it with Beatnik philosophy, and
stirring in smooth Tennessee whiskey to produce a classy album of
lyrical lawlessness.
Meat Purveyors - MORE SONGS ABOUT BUILDINGS AND COWS
Don't worry, you'll get past the title after the first song. This
record reminds me of the irreverent Austingrass style of The Bad Livers.
The blistering guitars licks, slap-happy bass lines, and manic mandolin
make this one of the most enjoyable albums I've heard since INDUSTRY AND
THRIFT. "Tall Boy" is my favorite cut but these are all fun, foot
stomping tunes. So, pop open a PBR and check out MORE SONGS ABOUT
BUILDINGS AND COWS.
Warm Regards,
-Shawn

Hi folks:
This CD is on CDNow's New Releases list. Any word from anyone about this
duo...I'm not familiar with them but the Nanci connection intrigued me...I
know there's gotta be some feedback from such a well-versed musical bunch.
The Kennedy's - Evolver
Husband and wife folk innovators the Kennedys began their career (and their
relationship) as openers for Nanci Griffith, and have been tearing up the
scene ever since. The aptly titled Evolver combines an earthy acoustic
sensibility with quirky, funky drum loops, notable on tracks like "Good
Morning Groovy."

It seems that the gigs where it is Nanci and the BMO are fine and tickets
are already on sale, and have been for some time at many of the venues.
It appears that the problems are at the small number of gigs involving
the orchestras. Not sure why, but that is definitely the discernable
pattern. Patience is the word, and few people seem to possess that
virtue. I got my front row seats for Reading back in the middle of
December. Asgard, the promoters, have still not put out any official
dates as I think they are waiting to confirm them ALL before doing so.
