Bristol is one of the shows that doesn't fit in there - as it isn't
confirmed yet, but it doesn't seem to be a Symphony date, either. Still, I
expect that as usual it's just a matter of waiting a little while longer.
and:
>Asgard, the promoters, have still not put out any official dates as I
think they are waiting to confirm them ALL before doing so.(
Apparently there's supposed to be an advert - listing the tour dates - in
the Independent this coming Saturday. I *think* it will list all the dates,
but I'm not absolutely certain about that. So presumably the shows will at
least be confirmed by then, even if tickets aren't on sale everywhere.
I've been told in the past that it's down to individual venues to decide
when to make tickets available (as long as the the particular date is
confirmed first, of course!). And... at some venues the box office staff
don't always get told about shows until the day they can start selling
tickets.

My wife and I just saw the Kennedys the other night. They were great. The
new CD says "a new kind of music", but I think it's just a little louder, a
little more psychedelic. "Evolver" is pretty good, I bought it at the show,
and Pete, and Maura signed it for me. Their first "River of Fallen Stars"
is still my favorite. They play a style that has been described as
coffee-house pop, and compared to the Byrds. They even did a couple Byrds
songs the other night.
The last time I went to see them I posted a review which, I'm sure, could be
found in the archives. Pete and Maura are playing in the VA,PA,NY,NH,MA
areas in the coming weeks, and if you get a chance go. Some of the shows
will feature a their "band", a bass player, and a drummer. They had them
with them the other night and to sit in the intimate setting of the Point,
in Bryn Mahr PA, and enjoy such a talented group, is a rare treat.
Pete, and Maura put out a real positive feeling in the music they play, the
things they talk about, but most of all in the way they care for each other.
I find these feelings to be quite inspiring, and my wife ,Chris, and I
"discussed" this after the show. :)

I managed to get my tickets for Newcastle City Hall in the UK. Sixth row
from front because the stage is really high and last time we came away with
aching necks from looking up all night from row 2.
No problems with tickets (apart from their credit card machine refusing to
read my card).
Can't Wait. Would have been nice to see the full symphony orchestra as well
but I'm not complaining.

Dear Netters...
Several years ago (1995?)Nanci appeared on Austin City
Limits, doing songs from her then new release "Flyers"
After her show, ACL showed a brief clip of her 1st
appearance on ACL in 1985. The clip was of her
singing
"Just Once in a Very Blue Moon"--she had long hair and
I swear was the most beautiful girl I've ever seen.
Does anyone else remember seeing this? I am so
hopeful that ACL
will make that 1st performance available on video.

The rest of that 1985 performance is just as good as the clip you saw.
As I've said before, that show was my introduction to Nanci, and I
became an instant fan as a result of both her music and her smile. If I
had heard her on the radio or an album, I probably wouldn't have paid
attention to it.
The songs on the show are mostly from the OIAVBM album. She also does
LOTTB- introducing it as a brand new song. And one of the most
interesting things about this performance is the huge crowd of musicians
and backup singers. Lyle Lovett, Denice Franke, Philip Donneley, and
Mark O'Connor are joined by 9 or 10 others to form an unusual group-
compared to most ACL performers.
I have a VHS tape I made of the show that I still watch occasionally in
spite of its extremely poor quality. My cable company was terrible back
then and my VCR wasn't too hot, either. So I, too, hope ACL releases a
clean copy of this show along with all the rest of Nanci's appearances.

John,
I beleive there is a reason for this. I saw the same
thing when Nanci played with the Austin Symphony here.
I asked about it and was told that half of the
tickets belonged to the orchestra and half for regular
sale.
So, this caused logistical planning delays between the
two halves. This same issue may be happening with all
symphonies.

I am interested, but I haven't been to the Birchmere since the '70s.
All I remember is that the whole thing was kind of a big hassle...
getting tickets, getting parked, getting a noisey table, getting back
outta there. Any more-recent anecdotes would help! Thanks.

Yes! I bought a used copy of The Kennedy's Angel Fire a couple of
months ago based on the dim recollection that they had backed Nanci in
concert, and I recommend it highly! It fit right in my CD player next to
albums by Nanci and Indigo Girls and Tish Hinojosa, and others who write
and sing little stories about love and loss and the sweet and bitter things
in life. There's one cute song on the album about Henry David Thoreau, and
the title track is all about the beauty of Angel Fire, New Mexico, a
breathtaking spot in the mountains outside Taos. Maura Kennedy sings lead,
backed up by Pete, and her voice has a lot of the purity and charm of Ms
Nanci's. Muscially, though I'm no expert, I'd say the style of the album is
similar to Poet in My Window or Once in a Very Blue Moon, the melodies and
guitar-based arrangements simple, moving and seductive. I have no idea what
their "new sound" will be like, but I'm off to record store to find out.
Best wishes to all you Brits out there trying to get tickets to Nanci's
upcoming concerts. Be persistent, have faith :>

Hi all,
I happened across (and bought) the album "A Portrait Of An Artist" by
Nanci Griffith (MCA sampler, CD33-1693, 1987). It has LNGH, It's A Hard
Life, LATF&D, FAD, GCH, Deadwood SD, and several others on it. Anybody
know anything about it? I vaguely remember it being discussed, but alas,
I wasn't paying attention.

It's a 1991 promo, sort of a "greatest MCA hits" package, put out before
the Retrospective album.
And have you noticed that the cd itself is titled "Late Night With Nanci
Griffith" (nice thought....but I digress...), and that the cover picture is
very similar to the one on LNGH? A nice collection of good songs.

John,
Thanks for posting the John Prine review. I'm going to see the Prine and
DeMent set at Glasgow's Royal Concert Hall tomorrow night and your comments
have heightened my anticipation. One question, if JP is on for two hours on
his own, how long does the whole concert last?
Jenny - like Mike, I contacted the Concert Hall some time ago re any
potential Glasgow dates for Nanci and they took a note of my phone number
and email accounts. They promised that they will contact me before the
ticket info is released to the press. My advice is that you phone the
Concert Hall directly, not the booking agencies, and give them your details.
The phone number is 0141 353 8000 - see you in the front row!
Best Wishes,

From: "Marsha Logsdon" (mlogsdon@sdcoe.k12.ca.us>
I have always been amazed at the resources here on the NanciNet, so I am
going to ask for something and hope that someone knows what I'm talking about.
I once subscribed to an online newsletter that published reviews
of recording artists who were recording on independent labels....mostly
folk stuff, or music close to that genre (if that's the appropriate
word). I even ordered something there once (a Gerry
O'Beirne-sp?).......but that was a couple of computers ago, and I don't
have an email address for the nice man who ran the newsletter. I'm just
sure that I read about this place on the NanciNet about a year or two
ago, so if anyone can just point me in a direction, I would appreciate
it. I'd like to pass it on to an Aussie who is a songwriter and
musician and who hopes to get some wider exposure to his special
talents.
Thanks in advance,
Marsha (mlogsdon@sdcoe.k12.ca.us)

Just wanted to send thanks to Vicki for the wonderful tape she made me. It's a
compilation of
some of Vicki's favorite Canadian folk artists, which has been great fun to
listen to, since
most of the artists are ones I'd never heard before. Included with the tape was
a list of
websites where information about the various artists can be found.
Hope everyone else is enjoying their tape too!
