Cowboy Junkies recording that includes the song "The Water is
Wide"? >>
CBJ's version of "The Water is Wide" is on their most recent CD release
"Rarities, B-Sides, and Slow, Sad Waltzes." The disc is just what the titles
implies and is a real gem for any CBJ fan.

The very latest Cowboy Junkies release is actually a live CD called "Waltz
Across America", which is (apparently) only available via their website:
www.cowboyjunkies.com The songs were recorded at various shows during 1999
and 2000.

Thanks Susan. I checked our their site as well. And thanks everyone for
your many responses to my inquiry. It's amazing how many CJ fans are on this
list. I've already ordered the "Rarities...." CD (and others while I was at
it -- who needs groceries when we have music?........).
I'll be performing at a couple of homeless shelters again in December and want
to include "Water is Wide" in the repertoire. CJ's version is definitely the
best. Thanks again everyone.

I'm sure the Cowboy Junkies' version of "The Water Is Wide" is excellent, but
have you ever heard Fred Neil's version off his "Bleecker and McDougal"
album? It's perfection.
Any Fred Neil fans out there?

Now you're talkin'!
A voice second to none (well, of the male singers, anyway:-)) and a big
songwriting talent as well. If anyone out there hasn't yet discovered him,
it's
never too late. After all this time, I still make new converts of whoever I
play
his music to.

Peter,
A Fred Neil fan! Wow! Am I ever! I've got the "Sessions" album, and I
believe one simply titled "Fred Neil" (I'm traveling, so I can't
check for sure) with "Everybody's Talking At Me", a lengthy
instrumental "raga," and "The "Dolphin Song." (Both vinyl.)
I've also got a 45 that has four tracks on it, "Bleeker Street,"
"Travelling Man" (?) all from memory. It was an import from France, I
think and always sounded scratchy, and sounded worse the more I
played it, so I've not listened to it for a really great while in the
interest of preserving it.
Your posting to NanciNet prompted me to do a search on Fred Neil and
I got a *lot* more hits than the last time I tried, which was many
years ago. I see that a CD compilation was released in 1998, "The
Many Sides of Fred Neil" with a review at
http://www.pauserecord.com/tim/Fred_Neil.html that does a good job of
putting into words the sound of Fred Neil's voice. *Now* I know what
I want for Christmas!
Thank you for reminding me!

For the guitar pickers in the crowd -- Don't make out your top-ten list
until you hear Tony Rice's latest, UNIT OF MEASURE. Wow! And for the fans
of Tony's singing, take heart. The liner notes say that the physical damage
to his vocal chords has been undone, and that he's started the process of
retraining his voice.

Well, that's certainly some good news. We saw Tony Rice here several months
ago, he was touring with Peter Rowan and Vassar Clemens and he was talking
and singing some backup. However his voice was still raspy and faint then,
but at least he was talking. Over the past several years when we've seen
him, he barely even talked on stage.

Hi folks --
About a year ago I posted some very personal thoughts about the meteor
showers that occurred one night as I was walking along the river bank trying
to come to terms with the sudden death of my father. I was very shaken when
Bill posted news that the Peetes were going through the same thing, nearly a
year to the day later. I wrote Sue with three words of advice -- things
that helped me -- walk, cry, sing. Sue wrote me back, and I don't think
she'd mind me relaying that she said she'd been doing lots of the first two,
but she asked me to sing. A year ago, I couldn't do this. But tonight,
with my Sky coming from a bottle, I'm able to sing the song I wrote on a
rainy Sunday morning after a night of watching the stars fall in November of
1999. I've posted the lyrics and an MP3 for download at
http://www.geocities.com/trailzzone/rain.html There's nothing fancy, just
me and my Martin and a mic in my living room. But, in the spirit of folk
music, I wanted to share it with Sue, and anyone else who knows that there
are friends in the madness who share the tears.

Shawn,
I was thinking about you and your father a week or so ago while
I was out in far West Texas one crisp November eve and the stars
were so many and bright that you could get lost in them.
Know that his memory lives on not only in your heart, but in the
hearts of others, even those who did not know him anyway other
than by the tracks he left behind in the shaping of who you
are. I'm glad you can sing it now.

Subject: NN: Darrell Scott and Tim O'Brien in Newnan, Ga

From: "Herve" (aequalis@wanadoo.fr>
Dear friends,
Steve Robertson in Georgia Pines is organizing a concert with two of the
greatest pickers today, Darrell Scott and Tim O'Brien.
Darell and Tom have just put out an album together, Real Time which sounds
real good. Darrell is famous for his presence next to Guy Clark on Guy's
live album Keepers and his two solo releases, Aloha from Nashville and
Family Tree.
Tim O'Brien has also several albums behind, such as the ambitious The
Crossing that traces his family's Irish roots and features Kelly Joe Phelps,
another great picker in his own right, and Red on Blonde, a collection of
Dylan covers.
If you're in Newnan, Georgia, December 15th, do yourself a favor and go to
the at the Wadsworth Auditorium, 25 Jefferson St.
The show is organized by Steve Robertson (http://www.starchart.com).
Last but not least, Tim O'Brien, Steve Earle and Ron Sexsmith will be
featured on Nashville Public Radio's "Songwriter Sessions"- available for
webcast Dec. 3 thru Dec. 9. www.wpln.org/songwriters/songwriters.html

Dear David: (and NN)
I've been much too busy these days to even read the digests, but Patti
forwarded your message to NN to me. Thank you for your message to NN and
your kind comments. Thought I'd respond openly (i.e.include the NN) to your
kind comments. I can imagine that the list has a whole heap of new people,
many of whom won't remember the old days when Ferg first started this
thing, The Boston Symphony gig, we attended with Ferg, where Kirsty sang,
The Kerrville and other gigs, and the basic history of how her "official"
website got developed by us in the first place. We had agreed with GM to
originally develop the new site using outside expertise which even included
receiving funding from GM for the development, and started the process this
summer, but after we started, our contact called, asking if we didn't mind
if he had a friend do the development. It made it a lot easier for him, and
truthfully, for us also. So, a little piece of Nanci history is passing,
but it's a happy time, because GM is going to do a bang up job and has
great ideas for the future. The old GCH pages will be around, both for
archival purposes, but also will take a new direction that will compliment
GM's efforts. As you NN old timers know, there are some good stories,
history and memories linked to those pages.
By way of sharing (for the benefit of the new NN's) a little of the history
of how Nanci's first official site came about, and assuring you (David)
that we feel adequately thanked as well as engaged, I've copied below a
piece of most recent correspondences between Nanci's management and us,
which includes a little reminiscing and update to our point person there (a
real professional and good man, whom we've had the pleasure of getting to
know over these years) with respect to Kirsty's progress. I've
appropriately snipped more confidential portions, but still I thought you
may enjoy. As you can see, they have been most appreciative, and we look
forward to a continued meaningful relationship, which may include, (if
Kirsty can ever get time away from schoolwork and a new boyfriend to think
more about it) a new piece of "official Nancidom" in which Kirsty will be
engaged. So, stay tuned!
And while I'm here, sharing a little history, I'll share that for me the
most wonderful benefit of Kirsty's friendship with Nanci over these years
has been James friendship. He is, without question a precious gem, a caring
and thoughtful man, and a great "rebel daddy" to my girls. If this guy EVER
puts out an album again, and I'm not saying that I know this to be true or
that he will be, because we've really not talked about it..but if he ever
does...I want each of you to go out and buy hundreds of them! (I was not
paid to say that) Nanci is indeed most fortunate to have his services and
his friendship. We've had some great times together, and I look forward to
more in the future. And finally, if you think the BMO sounds good, let me
tell you, it is nothing in proportion to the type of people they are. I
could share with you wonderful examples of friendship but there would not
be room to do so. Next time you go to a Nanci gig and you hear the BMO,
take extra enjoyment in knowing those are great folks up there, not just
great musicians.
Also while I'm here, sending something to the entire list, let me give my
love and/or very best to those old time NN's with whom I've had the
pleasure of meeting. I dare not write the names, for fear I'd forget
someone, but you know who you are. I think of you many times. Especially
my Austin area and Kansas City friends, and my SAS friend who was most dear.
And of course you and Em...... the spark plug plane still graces my
fireplace mantel and reminds me of friendship!
Thanks again David. God bless you all,
Rob
