I liked it as well--it was popular in the Washington, D.C., area; in fact,

I think the following quote is quite relevant to why we love as we do =
Nanci and many of the other artists mentioned here.
"There is another Nashville, with a kind of music so distant from what =
the city's commercial center cranks out as to be from a different =
planet. It thrives in the community's nooks and crannies like a cluster =
of quietly smiling mountain wildflowers in the shadow of those =
cultivated hothouse blooms that flaunt their colors on radio stations =
from coast to coast."
(from Robert K. Oermann's notes to O BROTHER WHERE ART THOU?)
And a late-year candidate for the best of 2000 shows its very musical =
head...
O BROTHER, WHERE ART THOU? MUSIC FROM A FILM BY JOEL COEN & ETHAN COEN. =
Mercury.
If the upcoming Coen brothers' film is half as good as this soundtrack =
album, it will be very good indeed. What a fun experience listening to =
this cd. How can you go wrong with Alison Krauss, Dan Tyminski and =
Jerry Douglas of Union Station, Gillian Welch and David Rawlings, =
Emmylou Harris, the Cox Family, Norman Blake, John Hartford, Ralph =
Stanley, the Whites, et al.? The film retells, comically, Homer's =
Odyssey in 1930's Mississippi with three escapees from a chain gang =
(George Clooney, Tim Blake Nelson and John Turturro). The soundtrack =
backing the story is really a tribute to "old time" music and includes =
both new and old recordings, including: "You are My Sunshine" (Norman =
Blake), "Down to the River to Pray" (Alison Krauss and group of =
harmonizers you would not believe), "Keep on the Sunny Side" (the =
Whites), "I'll Fly Away" (yes, a duet with Gillian and Alison!), "Didn't =
Leave Nobody but the Baby" (yes, yes, a trio with Gillian and Alison and =
Emmylou!), and "Oh, Death" (Ralph Stanley). Nineteen cuts in all. Don't =
miss this.

I must say, I agree! And "White Christmas" sung by Bing Crosby, "Chestnuts

A few Christmas songs from me that I enjoy:
Joe Diffie - "Leroy the redneck reindeer".
A honky tonk Christmas song from the year Rudolph had to call in sick. Leroy is
the only reindeer wearing an overall and a John Deere hat. He sings "Jingle
bells" with a rebel yell and delivers toys to all the good ol' boys. Really
country and full of cliches, but good fun.
Keith Harling - "Santa's got a semi".
This year there's a Christmas toy convoy revvin' up with Santa and the elves.
He's got a speaker on the top playin' "jingle bells" and red snow flaps on them
eighteen wheels. Have you ever seen steel and chrome fly?
Alan Jackson/Alison Krauss - "The angels cried". A beautiful piece that
actually works all year.

I love James Taylor's "Home by Another Way" about the 3 wise men, from his
album "Never Die Young." (I think the title alludes to Matthew, 2:12: "And
being warned of God in a dream, that they should not return to Herod, they
departed into their own country another way.")
The song combines musical beauty with JT's unique twist on the story.

Singer Kirsty MacColl dies in accident
British singer Kirsty MacColl, whose voice graced The
Pogues seasonal favorite "Fairytale Of New York" as well as her own hits,
has died in an apparent boating accident in Mexico. She was 41.
The Reuters news agency said MacColl, the daughter of revered British folk
singer Ewan MacColl and dancer Jean Newlove, died after she was run over by
a power boat. MacColl had apparently been swimming.
MacColl, who also collaborated with The Smiths, Talking Heads and Billy
Bragg, emerged in 1981 with the hit British single "There's a Guy Works Down
The Chip Shop (Swears He's Elvis)." She also wrote "They Don't Know", which
became a hit for Tracey Ullman. But her biggest success came with The
Pogues' Christmas-themed "Fairytale Of New York."
Earlier this year, she released a new album, "Tropical Brainstorm". On
Wednesday, a new BBC Radio 2 series called "Kirsty MacColl's Cuba,"
exploring the island's musical heritage, was to begin airing, Reuters
reports.
MacColl leaves two children from her marriage to record producer Steve
Lillywhite, whose resume includes U2 and the Dave Matthews Band.

Isn't it always so, that you don't know what you've got till it's gone? I'd
not noticed Kirsty MacColl for several years, until a few weeks ago she was
the guest of Jools Holland on his radio show. She was in jaunty mood as
always, and chose an amazing range of music starting with Faure's Requiem.
I still have the tape of the show in my car. She was so full of life and
fun and seemed to be coming into a really creative period in her musical
life. This is an awful tragedy.

Passing wings
into the night,
The songbird has left us;
she sang
and
danced with us
for awhile,
filled our hearts with her smiles and gentle music
but we should have known her grace
was too rare to stay settled for long
And
like a candle in a dark room
she brightened the stage for the briefest of moments:
the blood and the roses now growing
where she lies....
The sea has welcomed her back home;
traded her wings for oceanic eyes...
Forevermore,
She'll dance upon the waves,
Sing the mermaids song.
And enter the point where the sun meets the water...
Everyone, wave goodbye.

WWHP, "The Whip", the tiny station in tiny Farmer City, Illinois, is finally
available online!!!
So, add this to your radio 'bookmarks' or 'favorites': http://wwhp.com .
Just a few of the folks who have dropped in to chat and play a few songs are:
Kate Campbell, Jack Ingram, James McMurtry, R.B. Morris, Leftover Salmon, The
Nields, Bob Cheevers, Saffire -
those Uppity Blueswomen, Susan McKeown, Kevin Gordon, The Continental Drifters,
BR5-49, Corey Harris, Big House, Robbie Fulks (who's been known to sit in for a
few hours as guest DJ), Elvin Bishop, Lonnie Brooks, Delbert McClinton, Wayne
"The Train" Hancock, and too many others to list here.
Some of their other faves who you'll hear very frequently are: Toni Price,
Shelby Lynne, Van Morrison, North Mississippi AllStars, Walter Trout, Monte
Montgomery, Sam Bush, The Love Dogs, Shemekia Copeland, Koko Taylor, Deborah
Coleman, Irma Thomas, etc. You get the idea.
'The Whip' doesn't follow ANY formula played by anyone else. They just play
whatever they feel like. I've even heard a local kid sittin' in late at night
playing 'heavy metal'.
This 'live streaming' is new to 'em, and it may still have a few kinks to work
out (like minor split-second dropouts, and such), and this really is smalltime
radio. Don't expect a lot of polish from the on-air personalities. "Lonesome
Larry" Williams is pretty much the station. He's a one man radio station.
Larry's son "Chuck Wagon" Williams, webmistress/all-round helper Lori Allen,
and a small staff of volunteer DJs, fill out the crew. Bottom line: these guys
play great tunes, the music comes FIRST.
So, add them to your bookmarks, they are a FUN alternative to have available.
Be sure to drop 'Lonesome Larry' a note to tell him how you like the station,
and tell him where you are listening. His e-address is: wwhp@farmwagon.com .
Richard
P.S. Kate Campbell is the proud owner of at least two "Whip" t-shirts :) .

Anyone looking for the ultimate Nanci related gift might want to check out
the ebay link listed below. Someone is selling one of the Nanci Griffith
Taylor 512NG guitars. I have no connection with this auction whatsoever and
just thought somebody on this list might be hunting for this item. This
Fall I purchased a Taylor 512CS which looks pretty much the same but lacks
the pick guard and is not an official Nanci Griffith limited model... if I
hadn't spent oodles on that guitar ( which by the way is wonderful) I'd be
placing a bid on this one. Best of luck to some guitar playing fan out there!
