This song is also a favorite of mine. It's funny, I didn't really notice it for
about a year after buying the album, probably because it's near the end and
there are so many other good tracks. When I finally stopped to listen to it, it
really caught me. Aswell as the theme of the verses, I love the nautical
references in the chorus, really adds poetry to it. I love the sea faring
verses
in "Going Gone" too. It's the deep ocean swell, gets me every time.
Great to see Nanci playing in my hometown of Portsmouth (naval town), what with
Albert Hall that'll be 3 gigs. Should keep me going for a few years.

(( I just purchased Revisited at my local wal-mart (ick, I know), and I can't

the project? There are no credits on the jacket, and while I know that
Nanci has interests in different music, I have never heard of her being a
big techno fan. >>
What is the status of "Revisited." I recall it was originally scheduled for
release around the same time as "Dust Bowl Symphony" but that the released
was canceled at the last moment. I'm not sure I am really interested in
plopping down money for it, but the concept is so bizarre I must admit I am

This brings back memories - the general consensus of opinion was that
Nanci's involvement was probably non-existent, and the album seems to
have been withdrawn from sale before its release date. It still appears
to be reasonably easy to get a copy though, and without having to
resort to bidding on ebay.
The general consensus of opinion appears to be that its withdrawal
from sale was a merciful thing, but I'm afraid that I must admit that I
quite like Revisited . Well it's different - but mainly because
of three remarkable versions of "Late Night Grande Hotel".
The original is of course superb, and the piano & bassoon mix is
excellent. As for the third version I like, that is the 8 minute
"Gomi's Extended Arena Mix" -it's one of those
tracks that is so jaw-droppingly inappropriate and WRONG that I found
myself listening in stunned disbelief. Then I started laughing.....and I
really do find that mix in particular to be quite hilarious. Much as I
love the original version, I'm not offended by these mixes. In
fact I'm grinning now just thinking of that disco chorus....
Okay, the rest of the album isn't too good - how can "St Teresa" ever
succeed as disco? But I don't reckon it's quite as bad a cd as most
people think.

I wouldn't be so sure NG hates that album. I saw her a few months ago at
San Luis Obispo... it was a Club 47 revisted hosted by Tom Rush. Nanci's
guest young'un was Mathew Ryan. She raved about him. I thought that he
sounded like a Nine Inch Nails wannabe, not my favorite corner of the
musical world. If Nanci sincerely liked MR, then she should like those
disco remixes.
If someone can get me a copy of Revisited, I would much appreciate it.
Happy to pay costs/postage of course.

Hi List, not posted for a while but:
Further to Maureen's post Nanci was interviewed on Gloria Hunniford's
Open House show this afternoon. Luckily my brother heard she was on
and taped it for me.
Nanci was on for a good 10 minutes and the interview seemed well
researched. Introduced as the "Queen of Folkabilly", Nanci came
through the front door wearing a brown cardy, silky brown blouse, a
scarf, and jeans with a funny thing around the bottom of the legs that
Gloria commented on. When she appeared she didn't have the badges
(LBJ) on but when she played out at the end they had reappeared,
perhaps they were behind the scarf?
She spoke about Cambodia and Vietnam, Eric Taylor got a mention as a
veteran and they spoke breifly about her marriage and how she likes
to be alone (as long as she doesn't talk too much!), she was described
as a "bolter".
They spoke about the cancers "I'm recovered from both, very
healthy"....."Thank God for early detection". And briefly about how
the cancers were discovered and how Nanci's priorties have changed
since, how she may have "procrastinated" before about things like the
landmine campaign whereas now she much more of a doer.
They talked about DBS, and whether Nanci lives her life through her
songs and music. Given the personal nature of some of Nanci's songs,
I thought the answer was interesting:
"I get to live other peoples lives through my music, I get to write
about wonderful characters, I get to create wonderful
characters, for me song writing has always been writing that 3 and a
half minutes of somewhere else and someone else to be".
She played out with Tell Me How, and Brian Willaby accompanied her on
Guitar, I'm not sure what guitar she was playing.
I can make PAL copies of the video, if you're in the US and can view
PAL I'd be happy to send copies out their too. Please mail me if
you're interested.

Thursday!
On the dot.
Just in case this is not commonly known (it was a surprise to me when I
discovered it at Christmas) Sky Digital is now broadcasting Radio 2 (and R1,
R3, R4, Radio Scotland, Radio Wales, BBC World Service etc.). The channel
number is up in the 900's somewhere and ends in a 2 funnily enough. I
believe Radio 2 still broadcasts on the analogue Astra satellite on a
sub-carrier under UK Gold (not positive about this, need to check a listing
mag when I get home), seem to remember it being mono though. This is useful
to know as you can pick this up the ANALOGUE carrier without a decoder card
all over Europe.
Reason for mentioning this, it's easier to program a video recorder for the
whole 90 minute show (audio tapes not long enough without a manual "flip").
Just remember to leave your satellite on the correct channel.
For non UK/Euro folks getting bored by this, Radio 2 broadcasts over the web
from http://www.bbc.co.uk/cgi-bin/radio2/front.pl the "Listen" button is in
the left hand frame.
Enjoy
Stuart

(((PRESS RELEASE: NANCI GRIFFITH SPEAKS OUT FOR A
LANDMINE FREE WORLD
- 01/06/2000
JANUARY 6TH, 2000
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Celebrated folk artist Nanci Griffith (along with Sheryl Crow) will
travel to Cambodia and Vietnam beginning Tuesday, January 11th
with the Vietnam Veterans of America Foundation to see first hand
the devastation that landmines continue to cause throughout the world.
The VVAF has founded the Campaign for a Landmine Free World -
a comprehensive program to provide victims assistance to landmine
victims, to survey the world's most mine-affected nations and to educate
the American public on the international landmine tragedy.
Once in Southeast Asia, they will visit such places as the Hanoi National
Rehabilitation Hospital, the VVAF Children's Orthotics Clinic, tour the
Museum of Genocide Atrocities and Killing Fiends and meet with the
Mines Advisory Group/Cambodia to get a briefing with USAID head Bill
Pearson.
Nanci has a long history of championing the less fortunate. Her humanitarian
efforts are a manifestation of an extraordinary musical career, the courage of
her convictions and truly being a citizen of the world. She just completed the
very successful first leg of the Concert For A Landmine Free World featuring
Emmylou Harris, Mary Chapin Carpenter and Steve Earle among others.>>>

Hey, Barbara -- thanks for the tip! I was able to find it at wally world too!
I had missed this thread when it was originally released, so I'm glad it
resurfaced recently. (On good days I've been lurking; mostly I've had to
delete without reading, darnit.) But this really caught my attention, because
I've gotten into dance music lately (Bjork, Everything but the Girl, Madonna
-- mostly the trip-hop / electronica variety; even Rickie Lee Jones has
dabbled in the area!). So I HAD to see what lovely Nanci sounded like paired
with a thumping bass. 8) Of course, this is k-tel version of dance music,
where it's all invisible studio wonks, rather than artists like Massive
Attack, but on the whole I find it rather pleasant and amusing.
On a different note, I got some good news from this weekend from the Emmylou
list -- the silver-haired goddess is coming to northern Arizona this summer!!
It'll only be the second time I've gotten to see Emmylou, so I'm extremely
excited. (The first time was Telluride '98 with a whole host of firsts:
Nanci, Alison Krauss, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Julie & Buddy Miller -- you
remember! 8) After all the gloating from the Brits of late, it's nice to have
something to look forward to myself. Now if we could just get Nanci to come
this way.....
Well, back under the rock with me now...

Date: Wed, 26 Jan 2000 04:37:44 EST
From: DRiley4510@aol.com
Hi,
Upcoming events first: Terry Wogan on his prog announced that Nanci would be
appearing live on Richard Allinson's show on radio 2 which is on Thursday
from 10-30 p.m. - 12.
There was a mention a while back here on the NNet that she would be on Bob
Harris's prog that same evening but I haven't heard anything about that since
- though I haven't heard she isn't on it either!
Did anyone else see Nanci's appearance on daytime TV on 25/1? She sneaked
onto a Channel 5 prog with Gloria Hunnyford. She looked a bit tired to me but
Gloria commented on how her jeans & boots were the height of fashion & Nanci
said thanks. They talked about her recent trip to Vietnam & elsewhere & she
was asked about her role. She said it was to tell her audiences about
landmines & raise awareness of the problems they gave rise to. There were
some pictures of her with children in places she'd visited.
There was also a link to her marriage, with Eric being a Vietnam veteran &
she was asked if they had talked about his experiences & she said that they
hadn't & that most people who went there didn't want to speak of their
experiences. There was a bit more probing about her private life & Nanci
visibly withdrew & didn't want to speak about it & the topic moved to music.
Nanci again said that in her writing she had the chance to write 3 minute
stories & to be someone else for a while. She also said that she was pretty
much a loner & life on the road suited her.
She finished off with a song, Buddy's Tell Me How.
Nice surprise!
Dave.

I've seen Iris twice and both times her stage presence was that of one who
was slightly ill-at-ease with being in front of the audience. It seemed to
me that she was far more comfortable behind the piano than standing in front
with the guitar. I totally understood this, being incredibly shy myself.
Jenny's description of Iris being at odds on stage with John when he was
talking, drinking, etc. reminds me of how I can dance with a partner but
not by myself. It also sounds to me that she probably had a cold the night
