Subject: NN: Delurk: Princeton, NJ concert report

From: Jeff Davis (jbdavis52@rcn.com>
I just got back from Nanci's concert at the McCarter Theatre in
Princeton, NJ. WOW! It was great. This is the third time I've seen
her in concert, and it was certainly the best. She was in great form,
and everything just fit together well.
Rodney Crowell opened the night with a nice set. Nanci and the BMO came
out and joined Rodney for the last three numbers. So we got an added
bonus of three more songs with Nanci on stage. For the second set
(which lasted somewhere between 75 and 90 minutes), we were treated to
lots of Nanci standards as well as her two new songs - "This Part of
You" - her song for Viet vets (including ex-husband, Eric Taylor) - and
"Midnight in Missoula" - a song to encourage her niece in Montana to
head to bed.
I think that my appreciation for Nanci's work had been waning lately.
Maybe it was just due to my last concert encounter being at the PNC Arts
Center in NJ where Nanci was sandwiched in between the Chieftains and
Shasta McNasty - or whatever his name is. Anyway, after tonight I'm in
love again. (Shhh! Don't wake up my wife in the next room! Better for
her not to know....).
Now for the gloatings: I had a front-row seat just slightly to the
right. I don't think I ever want to be any farther back. It just was a
great experience. Also, at the end of the encore, Nanci stopped to sign
a copy of someone's program. (I hadn't picked one up! Gasp!) His pen
wouldn't work, so I lent Nanci mine. I'll never wash that pen again!
(When did I ever wash a pen before, though?)
Now the question: On the strap on her blue Taylor guitar is the
expected LBJ button along with a Texas pin and a pin of an airplane (for
the Flyer). However, on her other guitar's strap she has a pin with a
photo of a man wearing a hat. Seems somewhat like a former photo of
James Hooker (hatless tonight as well!), but it also reminded me of John
Hiatt. Can't figure out why. Anyway, anyone know whose photo this is?
(James? Can you divulge the answer? [BTW, James was in good voice
tonight as well.] Also, did you finish that glass of wine yet?)
Enough for now. Back to lurking.
- Jeff Davis

Over on the Al Stewart list, we've been discussing what other artists we
like. Of course, a lot of us are big fans of Nanci. But this post
caught me off guard:

Huh? Am I totally blissfully ignorant of Nanci's spouses (not that I'd
really care), or is this incorrect information?

To all public knowledge, she was married once to Eric Taylor, and has not
remarried. I am sure she has had close friends... john alvord

Subject: NN: Kingston NY cancelled! Why?
Date: Mon, 20 Mar 2000 17:24:04 EST
From: DanielOB@aol.com
We had tickets to the Kingston show this past Saturday night. When we
arrived after an hour and a half drive, the theater was dark and signs were
taped to the doors saying the concert was canceled. The signs also said that
the cancellation was the fault of the production company, Twin Cloud
Concerts, and to call them with complaints (a phone number was listed).
Earlier today I called the theater itself and was told that Twin Cloud was
responsible, and that the theater was only notified on Thursday. I finally
got through to Twin Cloud a little while ago, and the person who answered
said that UPAC (Ulster Performing Arts Center) was responsible. He also said
that he lost $10,000 on the Tarrytown shows because of low ticket sales, and
that he notified UPAC all the way back on Tuesday. If that were the case I
would think someone local on this list would have found out and posted the
info.
We are so disappointed, and just want to get a straight answer as to why the
show was canceled. We were hoping Nanci wasn't sick, but that would make the
cancellation understandable (of course we also wouldn't want that to be the
case). Does any one know what really happened? Thanks.

From: nmrs@freeway.net
I heard that Nanci would be at Interlochen on July17. We are on their
list and have not received it as yet so haven't ordered tickets yet. I
think it should be out the end of April ...tickets go very fast so I
will post the information as soon as I get it.
Interlochen is probably about 2 and 1/2 hours south of the bridge. I
live one hour south of the bridge and it takes us about 1 and 1/2 hours
to get there.
If you have never been there it is a beautiful place in the summer.

Folks,
We've been having a drought here in Central Ohio since last summer, maybe
it's finally over. Tom from Columbus pointed out to me that Pollstar is
listing Nanci as appearing on July 22nd, Saturday night, at the Lancaster
Festival in Lancaster, Ohio. Anyone have any further info on this, or know
where to get tickets?
Thanks.
Roman from Ohio
PS. We all know that Nanci's a sweet southern woman, I just want to warn her
that Lancaster was the birthplace of General William T Sherman, I hope that
doesn't offend her or any of our other Southern friends on this list.

Well, it's a good thing there's an internet. I just got a heads up from
another Nanci fan that tonight's show at the Ulster Performing Arts Center
was cancelled...I called the UPAC, and they confirmed. They said the promoter
cancelled the show, and did not give a reason. I AM SO BUMMED!!!!!!!!!! But
far less bummed than I would be if I had spent $36 on a roundtrip bus ticket
and travelled two hours upstate.
Does anyone know why the show was cancelled?

Subject: NN: Starry Night/Nanci tonight
Date: Sat, 18 Mar 2000 11:53:32 EST
From: ChocChippy@aol.com
Well, I missed "Starry Starry Night" when it came on last week on the Long
Island public tv station because I was in class, and kicked myself for it,
then noticed it was on again Friday night (Saturday morning) at 1:05 am. Oh,
I'll be home in PLENTY of time for that, said the girl who got in at about
3:45 this morning.
But I have a good excuse. One of my two favorite musical artists was playing
in my hometown last night, and pardon me, I was at the Roxy rocking my socks
off to The Plus Ones, The Smugglers, The Donnas and Joan Jett & the
Blackhearts. The show was over before midnight, but after waiting for coat
check, doing the post-game wrap up with friends from far away whom I don't
get to see enough, scarfing down some post-midnight pizza, and trying
unsuccessfully to get a cab on 6th Avenue with the temperature plunging into
the single digits with wind chill, finally taking the subway, stepping amidst
the sleeping carcasses of those who had partied too well on the 17th, and
well, the tv show was long over by the time I got home.
So, I'd be happy to send a blank tape to anyone who could dupe the show for
me...
But the good news is, I get to see my OTHER favorite musical artist less than
24 hours after seeing Joan Jett! It's off to the Adirondacks in a couple
hours, and indulging the OTHER side of my Gemini personality, with the added
bonus of being able to sit down at the show, knowing there will be no
smoking, probably no moshing topless teenagers, and we're allowed to sing
along to "Across the Great Divide."
Kathleen W. (who hopes that even without the Crickets, Nanci might sing "Love
is All Around.")

Hi folks: I finally was able to see the concert in Maine. One question:
does the cd or video have any more Nanci material.? Is it worth that
high premium? Secondly, Don was live that night in Maine because he
lives there. He commented very favorably about working with Nanci:
saying she was very well prepared for the concert, a great deal of fun,
and could be very zany indeed referring to her inspired performance on
American Pie. He was very grateful also when she put her hand to her
chest and stated "I got to sing with Don Mclean." I would not be
surprised if they worked with each other again. One of the many things
I admire about Nanci Caroline is her generosity on heaping praise on
other artists and her thrill for other's music. One interviewer wroth
that when she sang with the Crickets in Maine, she kept bring the topic
over to the Crickets rather than to herself. A rare quality indeed for
one in show business. She loves the music, you just have to look at
her to know.

My husband saw the show the other night - we have 3 PBS stations which all
show things at different times. Anyway, he likes Nanci, though not a fanatic.
He thought this was a rather horrible performance by Nanci, and I agreed that
it wasn't her best. I only hope that all those who saw it and are unfamiliar
with her work will give her a listen in another context.
I also had a note from a friend in Princeton who is not too familiar with
Nanci but went to the concert. The review: "I felt she upstaged her band too
much. They were WAY back from her and her banter was minimal and a bit
forced."
Just thought I'd add some perspective from the non religious to the mix. My
review would no doubt be completely different.
Best to all,
Tricia

Hi All,
Ok, I heard it through the grape vine that the Kingston show is cancelled. A
friend of mine heard it from somebody she was standing next to at Morristown.
Can anyone confirm? Anyone?? I reaaally hope not, because I need something to
"restore my faith" right about now... and also because I don't know what to do
with the blue roses I bought yesterday.
Talk to me,
Flyer
