Subject: NN: Dylan/Nanci Cancels/FAD moment

From: "Pugsley, R.M." (rmp6@leicester.ac.uk>
Hello all,
I was at a conference this week, the Political Studies Association's
50th Annual and one of the sessions I attended was called 'Chimes
of Freedom: Political theory meets Bob Dylan' - it was quite
interesting and if you want to read one of the papers you can,
it's called 'Desolation Row: The Expressionist Dylan' and it's
online here: http://www.psa.ac.uk/2000/Papers/Wilde%20Lawrence.pdf
You'll need acrobat to read it though...
Secondly our local concert venue (in Leicester, UK) announced that
Nanci was playing in September which tied in with the earlier rumours
about her playing the Albert hall again at that time but then to-day
they announced it wa cancelled - no reason given. Anyone know
anything about this?
Oh yeah one one thing - fabulous Nanci moment - I was trudging back
from the Cafe Royal on Wednesday night (after the conference dinner)
it was raining and I was forlorning trying to catch a cab down Oxford
Street. It was about 1230 and London was not looking it's best. I
was feeling more miserable by the minute - on my own, inappropriately
attired for the cold and rain, very tired and London seemed a pretty
inhospitable place and then as I walked past what I think was a Burger
King the unmistakable tones of FAD came through the air, it's not one
of my favourite Nanci songs but right then, as I stood there on the curb it
sounded like the greatest record on earth, and, guess what, a cab pulled
up without me even hailing it, it was truly a wonderful thing.
All the best
Robert (Pugsley)

Just wanted to bring the NanciNet up-to-date on the recent news of Bill and
Bonnie Hearne. For any new NanciNetters out there, Bill and Bonnie are
Texas-born Americana icons who played a significant role in Nanci's early
days. In fact, she dedicated OVOR to them by saying that they play "the
best darn folk music I ever heard."
Two years ago, Bill and Bonnie released "Diamonds in the Rough" on Warner
Western. Lyle Lovett, Tish Hinojosa, Nanci, and Jerry Jeff Walker
contributed their talents to this release, noting Bill and Bonnie's
influence on their careers.
Now, another series of recording projects are under way for Bill and
Bonnie. John Wooler, an A&R guru at Virgin Records, has come up with a
concept album called the "The I-10 Chronicles." I-10, of course, is the
interstate highway that runs from Los Angeles to Jacksonville. "The I-10
Chronicles" features music that you would hear along the way. Volume I
features 3 tunes by Bill and Bonnie as well as performances by Adam
Duritz, Joe Ely, Eliades Ochoa (Buena Vista Social Club), Charlie
Musselwhite, and Willie Nelson. It also introduces a Los Angeles' singer
Meredith Marshall. Volume I was released last week and is available in
most CD stores. Volume II is scheduled to be released in a matter of weeks.
Virgin Records is introducing a label called Back Porch, which will release
a Bill and Bonnie album this Summer. So lots of good things happening for
Bill and Bonnie these days.

This is pretty far afield from Nanci-type music, but I'm gonna write
about it anyway cuz I know a lot of people like variety on their
musical plates now and then.
The great American a capella group, the Persuasions, first got their
start when Frank and Gail Zappa heard a rough demo tape brought to
them by a mutual friend and decided to sign them to their then-new
Straight Records label. This led to a thirty-year and running career
for the Persuasions. Well, they never forgot Frank and Gail's support
and generosity, and now, in tribute, they have recorded an a capella
CD of Frank Zappa's music called Frankly A Cappalla: The Persuasions
Sing Zappa.
What's really neat about this record is that you can really hear the
love and sincerity and fun that went into making it! Plus some rally
top-notch vocal performances, and Frank's funny and provocative
material. Most of the songs are the doo-wop variations that Frank
came up with in the Mothers of Invention days. There's also a
Swingle-Singers-style rendition of an instrumental theme from "Lumpy
Gravy" and a country-sounding rendition of "Harder than your Husband"
Anyway, try it! Give your ears a tickle.

Greetings! I am new to the net and received my first digest yesterday. I
live in the UK and yes I have my May 6 Cambridge tix in hand. David posted
a question about the Newcastle "City Hall" show in May 17th. I called them
and yes they still have tickets. Their box office hours are 10:30-16:30 CET
(one hour later than GMT). Their number is country code 44, 191 261 2602.
If dialing in country drop the 44 and add a leading zero (0191). Hope this
helps!

Subject: NN: Nanci's Music Videos

From: Steve Robertson (stever@mindspring.com>
CMT was in operation for several years before it came to my
neighborhood. As a result, I occasionally learn of an old music video by
Nanci that I've never seen. The only ones I saw when they were new were
"Speed of the Sound of Loneliness" and "This Heart".
Recently, I saw the video of "I Knew Love"- compliments of another list
member who had it on tape. And I heard an old interview with Nanci where
she mentioned that the video for "Daddy Said" was playing on CMT at that
time. Are there any other short-form music videos of Nanci's older songs?
On a related note, does anyone have any knowledge of the legal
(contractual) details relating to the ownership of music videos? Some of
the bigger stars put out compilations of their videos- but the vast
majority seem to go to music video heaven after a few months. It's a
shame, IMHO, that this vast library of expensive, high quality material
can't be made available somehow to those of us who might like to add
selected items to our home collection.
Maybe CMT could play their entire library during the wee hours of the
morning and post a detailed schedule of the videos on their website.
Hidin' Out in the Georgia Pines-
Wishin' It Would Rain,
Steve Robertson

Subject: NN: Nanci in Atlanta

From: James_Troiano@umit.maine.edu (James Troiano)
Hi folks: My wife and I have been trying to see Nanci in the Northeast
fot the last two years to no avail. We have been suffering from Nanci
withdrawal because we feel it is necessary for our health and
well-being to see her at least once a year. (Luckily, my wife is almost
as big a fan of Nanci's as I am.) We decided to try Atlanta (July 7th
date), since that is not too hard to get to from Maine. We looked into
arrangements, but a snag developed when I checked into purchasing
tickets. The phone numbers on all the websites could not help me
(Iincluding Ticketmaster which does not have the concert listed). At
the Box Office number, someone gave the phone number of the symphony,
but it does not seem to be correct. In short, is there anybody out
there who knows about the concert and how one can get tickets , and
also how about the Chastain Park Amphitheater for a venue? Thank you
kindly, Jim Troiano

I saw Nanci, the BMO, and the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra at Chastain last
summer. I was entirely enchanted. Chastain is a charming venue, especially
in the summer (provided it doesn't rain!) -- we took a picnic supper, wine &
candles. When the sun goes down, it's all flickering candlelight. Nanci
sounded great, and the ASO was a fine accompaniment underneath that lilting
voice. She was, as I've always experienced her to be, sincerely & abundantly
gracious to the symphony, her guest artists, and the audience. Best night of
my whole year!
It's possible that the reason you have trouble finding a listing for the
concert is that it's listed under the ASO's summer Chastain series. You
might try these numbers: 404-233-7275 (Chastain Park concert info), or
Chastain/ASO Info: 404-733-4900, Single Tickets: 404-733-5000. (this is also
the box office # for the symphony - it's listed here under ASO and under
Chastain, so hopefully it will get you somewhere).
Best wishes! It's about time for me to get my own tickets....
Kate

Are tickets on sale for the atlanta show yet? I didn't even know that she
was playing down there again. I seem to remember that tix to single events
(and not the series of shows) go on sale late.
Does anyone know the lineup? Is it going to be with the symphony again? On
the management list it said "elektra" date.

>>ROCKRGRL MAGAZINE - For Women Who Rock!
There's an online application form for the showcase nights at the ROCKRGRL
Women in Rock Conference in November in Seattle, which I will definitely be
attending. There will be tons of speakers and panels and a trade show, and
three nights of showcases. All styles of music welcome...the only
requirement being that the band have at least one woman member!
Take a look...
