Hey Nanci fans,

I just wanted to wish those of you bound for Merlefest this week
a great time. We're committed to some local gigs so I won't get
to set up a TrailZZone camp this year. But thanks to the help of
John Hartford and others, the little camperized radio station
I've been raving about has worked out an agreement to webcast
some of shows. I know some of you are still tuning in to
http://www.wdvx.com and, judging by the increased number of Nanci
Griffith spins, I know the station really appreciates your email
and online support. So y'all holler real loud during those
one-of-a-kind Merlefest performances so we can hear you and wish
we were there!

Warm Regards,
-Shawn

Subject: NN: Do The Locomotion (NNC)

   From: Ed Maier (evmaier@dhc.net>

Hi all,

This is kind of cute, and I want to share it.

I went into Denney's very early this morning for a cup of coffee. The
juke box is loaded with fifties and sixties music, and Do The Locomotion
came on. Almost as if on cue, all the waiters and waitresses, faces
decorated with a large black spot nose and small black spots whiskers,
lined up side by side behind the counter and began a side-by-side line
dance, two cross steps left (clap! clap!) and two cross steps right
(clap! clap!) in time to the song.

It was hilarious! Then the customers joined in with the clap-claps and,
just for a few moments, nothing really mattered except for the music.
Maybe that's why I find life so sweet.

Happy Easter,
Ed Maier
Arlington, TX

Wonderful little story Ed, makes one feel as though there is hope left in
this world! You sure they weren't filming it for something? (shhh don't
listen to my cynical side)
Nevermind. :)

Subject: NN: another talent deserving wider recognition--Jenna Mammina
   Date: Tue, 25 Apr 2000 23:32:21 EDT
   From: Halesbop@aol.com

Over the holiday weekend I got a chance to hear for the first time an
absolutely mesmerizing vocalist, and since I'd never heard of her before I
think there's a good chance few Nancinetters have. But if there is any
justice in the music biz, Jenna Mammina won't be a secret for long.

Jenna is a young jazz/cabaret singer (she calls herself "contemporary
singer/songwriter") based in San Francisco. I think she would appeal
especially to anyone who's fond of Nanci's LNGH/San Diego Serenade/Drops...
type songs, Diana Krall, Susan Werner, Karen Savoca, Billie Holiday, the
jazzier forays of Joni and Rickie Lee, and Jenna's mentor, Abbey Lincoln. If
you like any of the above, give her a try at:
     http://www.jennamammina.com/

Right now Jenna's cd, "Under The Influence" is available only through her at
shows or the website. It's worth the effort. (At the concert she said she was
donating 20% of sales to breast cancer research, not sure if that applies to
web/mail sales, but would guess so.) Had I heard it before I made my Top Ten
of 1999 list it would have easily placed there, maybe even as #1. I saw her
at the Kerrytown Concert House in Ann Arbor Saturday night, where she wowed a
sold out audience with two sets of standards, originals and such unlikely
cabaret fare as Elvis Costello's 'Watching the Detectives' and Hendrix's
'Little Wing'. Her voice is perhaps the most beautiful and versatile I've had
the pleasure of hearing. I know it's a cliche, but she definitely makes each
song she interprets her own.

But I'm not an expert or reviewer, so take a look and listen at her site and
see what others who are have to say. And, if she does have any other fans on
NN, I'd love to hear from you.

just trying to share a good thing,
  Steve
