standings have changed dramatically since I last looked!

Top three at present are as follows -

Last Of The True Believers
Flyer
One Fair Summer Evening

I think the thing to look at here is not the order in which the titles are
ranked, but to total number of points an album has received. For example,
Late Night Grande Hotel may be listed in "fourth place" but "Lone Star State
of Mind" actually has more overall points. The titles are ranked according
to the number of times it has been selected as #1. Pointwise people seem to
actually Like LSSOM better. It just isn't anybody's #1 pick.

I take your point. So - just to boringly go on about one of my favourite
albums again - if every single person who voted thought that There's A Light
Beyond These Woods was number 3 in their estimation, there is no way it
could end up at number 3 in this poll unless numbers 1 and 2 were the same
choice for everyone as well.

I'm not convinced that the heavy weighting for #1 choice is really valid -
my own favourites do for instance vary, and there is not really any one
album that is clearly the best. My votes were - in order - LOTTB, OIAVBM,
OFSE, but that was a month or more ago. I've been listening to Flyer quite
a bit lately, and I'm wondering why I didn't rate that in the top three. And
having mentioned OIAVBM in my last posting, I'm now thinking that I'd put
that at #1 right now. So it's very much a question of how you feel at the
time you vote...same as many an election I suppose, and with the same
potential regrets afterwards!

At the same time I would be reluctant to come up with a better system - no
doubt there are faults in all of them. The only one I would be prepared to
wholeheartedly endorse is one which assured TALBTW a top five place!

   Date: Sat, 5 Aug 2000 14:15:39 -0400 (EDT)
   From: Amber-Lorien Gilbert (alorien@juno.com>

Hey,

Thought I'd share this little story with the nanci-net since
things have been kinda slow (whereas nanci-net jr. is beginning to talk
again!). For my birthday my mom signed me up for voice lessons, and
while they're not the most enjoyable thing in the world, it is a chance
to sing my favorite songs for a lady who has never heard of Nanci, Dar
Willaims, Kate Wolf, or anyone I listen to. (Though she actually bought
The Honesty Room, dar williams, after hearing me sing When I Was A Boy)

Anyway, I was a little early for my lesson so I sat outside and
flipped though my songbook. I'm a teenager, so most of my peers have
never heard of Nanci, or any of the other talented singers and song
writers we love. But I was waiting for my lesson, and this girl, who
must have been 6 or 7, pointed to the cover of my Flyer book and asked
her mother, "Isn't that the pretty lady who sings about that hammer?"
her mom then said, "Oh... yeah! Nanci Griffith! You know who she is?"
(I nod) "Most kids your age don't listen to good music. Bethy's
learning to sing 'If I Had A Hammer' from her father. I can't believe
you know who she is!" I said I couldn't believe Bethy had known her
either, and I was glad she was listening to her. "Oh I can't do much
about that. She heard some song about Mary Margaret, and we just
couldn't keep her from the tape player."

Then it was time for my lesson, but I would have much rather stayed and
talked to this lady(and she seemed to have a lot to say:-)

Well, Nanci, if you're reading, your music lives on forever in these
children.

HI,
We first saw Nanci at the OLYMPIA theatre in Dublin in late November 98.
The OLYMPIA is an old music hall, and is small, and so you can get real
close.
The guest artist list was long...and included an Irish singer, Dolores
Keane.
We being probably the only people from England, in the theatre that
night, were
also probably, the only ones who had never heard her sing before.
She sang a duet with Nanci,..... "Never be the Sun"
It was so simple and so beautiful that it brought tears to the eye.
It was a great night, with people who just happened to be in town, such as
Donvan, calling in. Nanci said that his "Try and catch the Wind" was one of
the first songs that she ever sang in public. Out of interest.............
" Grafton Street " is one of the main streets in Dublin, with the park
called
St Stephen`s Green at the south end, and the university buildings of
Trinity College at the north. It nearly always has various good quality
buskers who range from classical string quartets to blues players.
We saw one young lad, who must have been about ten years old, still in
his school clothes, with a half size fiddle, and playing Irish traditional
tunes with ease.
He was great, and played so naturally, as if it was no effort at all.
The atmosphere in Grafton Street, as in all of Dublin, (especially the pubs)
is so relaxed.
 Cheers to all.....

                        Shirley Anne.

I do, I do!

(Now And Then, There's) A Fool Such As I, is an old country song
written by William Trader, copywrite 1952. You can find a nice version
of it on Rodney Crowell's very first album.

Funny you should mention it, and the reason I know this info is because
I just learned it myself and sang it for the first time on stage last

Yes, Rodney Crowell's version is probably about the best, but the most
famous version of the song must be the one by Elvis in the late fifties -
the flipside was I Need Your Love Tonight, I think. And the original, back
in the early fifties, was by Hank Snow.

I don't think Jo Dee's voice is particularly similar to Nanci's (though they
both have very strong, bery pretty voices IMHO) What I think it is, the
songs are of a similar style musically, alternative/ folk/ country. (More
country in JoDee's case, though) They're both very enthusiastic performers,
and their logns are lyrically similar in a lot of ways; very triumphant,
powerful. "I'm Alright" and "Everything's Comin' Up Roses" are examples.
"Bye Bye" and "Anything You Need" both express a strong "who needs you"
attitude towards a significant other whose relationship with you just isn't
working out. I love JoDee's songs for those times when all is going well.
Or those times when I need to believe all will be going well again in the
near future.

All this is just MHO,of course, feel free to disagree as always.

Subject: NN: Faith Hill/Tim McGraw
   Date: Fri, 4 Aug 2000 07:33:41 -0700
   From: "Grissom, Mark" (mgrissom@bechtel.com>

Just wanted to report on my recent experience... A girlfriend of mine was
recently here in New Orleans to see me. I had noted that the Faith Hill/Tim
McGraw tour was coming to the Arena when she was going to be here. I am not
a fan, per se', but I know she likes Faith so I kept looking on the Net and
on the day of the show, found two killer aisle seats on the floor, 20 rows
back in the first section. "We're goin'!", I called to tell her that
afternoon. She was so excited!

I don't know Tim McGraw from that stupid Indian song that was his first hit,
but he is a big star now. Faith Hill I actually always thought could sing
and she is not too hard on the eyes. So I went with open ears and an open
mind, figuring the cultural experience alone would be a kick.

Lemme tell ya, it was one great show! Faith Hill, who I had pictured as sort
of a stiff ice princess, is anything but. She commands the stage, looking
absolutely gorgeous, sashaying around QUITE seductively as she sings her ass
off all the while. There is a large rampway that circles behind the stage
and two platforms on either side, so she really covers the stage and works
the crowd. She has a killer band of the best Bubbas money can buy and pumps
out one hit after another. The girl is well on her way to becoming a
MegaStar... She was great.

At one point, she went to the lip of the stage and called for a girl to be
brought up to her. I thought it was this crazy fan who kept holding a sign
up, waving at her, but she actually wanted this bald cancer victim. Security
brought her up and Faith kneeled, reached out and touched her and told her
she was beautiful. The video screen showed the girl just totally lose it,
Faith Hill started to cry, as did everyone in the place. Faith had to take a
sec and regroup, it was such a moment.

Tim McGraw followed, with a powerful string of his corny Middle America
tunes, again backed by a KILLER band of Nashville aces. The crowd reaction
was astonishing, just this side of a Springsteen concert. I had no idea the
guy was so popular. He is from Louisiana, so he really had the crowd in the
palm of his hand. Two girls next to us were singing along to every song,
happy as could be, and the video screen kept showing people with the same
kind of look on their face. I am not so jaded that I can't get into the
spirit of things. It was a kick.

They end the show with a series of VERY steamy duets, Faith Hill moving in a
way that a woman so beautiful should not be allowed to in public. Slow grind
comes to mind... They lowered a scrim and showed this cool video they have
done in Paris as they sang to each other. They are a very happy and sexy
couple and it showed. Hot stuff...

So, what can I say, call me irresponsible, kick me outta the club...it was a
great show, very well thought out, slick and utterly professional, but with
a very human and down-to-earth sensibility. I came away very impressed.

If you are a fan of Faith Hill at all, I recommend the show highly.

Ended up the night in a cool neighborhood bar seeing the amazing and utterly
New Orleans funk/rap/hiphop/brass band All That, but that's a whole 'nother
story.

What a night!

Ha! This made me laugh, thank you. I love the
"corny middle America" part of it. As part of my job load in corny middle
America, I manage a suite at the local arena and can tell you, first hand,
that many corny middle Americans want, no, are willing to kill for, tickets
to the Soul 2 Soul Concert with Faith and Tim.

I really like Faith Hill....Tim McGraw is a little too in Marie Osmond's camp
(i.e., a little bit country) for my taste. Nonetheless, should be a great
show. I, on the other hand, am pouting that I missed Nanci at Interlochen
and will miss the Indigo Girls at the Michigan Womyn's Festival on Wednesday
because I am in charge of a photo shoot. Stagnant products come first,
before real life experiences. Or so my job dictates.

Oh, and Jo Dee Messina has a sweet and pure voice...maybe that is why she
reminds some of Nanci?

I guess I' ve had too many blackberries today.

Have a great one!

Great idea Scott,

Lucinda Williams - "The Ballad of Robin Winter-Smith"

The Indigo Girls - "Lookin' for the Time (Working Girl)"

Vince Bell - "Working in Corners"

Dolly Parton = "Love Wore a Halo (Back Before the War)"

Dar Williams - "If Wishes Were Changes"

Cowboy Junkies - "So Long Ago"

Mountain Soul - "I Wish it Would Rain"

Kate Campbell - "Love at the Five and Dime"

The Yahoos -- Outbound Plane

Todd Snider -- Heaven and also I Wish It Would Rain

Jack Ingram -- Just Another Morning

Phil Lee -- Morning Train and Everything's Coming Up Roses

Keith Sykes -- Wing and the Wheel and St. Olav's Gate

This one's good too, but I'm going out on a limb to pair Alison Krauss with
Rob Thomas of Matchbox 20 for GCH

Alison Krauss - "St. Teresa of Avila"

Lee Ann Womack -- "Late Night Grande Hotel" or "Last of the True Believers"

Guy Clark - "Not My Way Home"

Stevie Nicks -- "Talk to Me While I'm Listening"

Lyle Lovett -- "Year Down in New Orleans"

A couple that are pretty obvious when you think about it are -

"Daddy Said" by Dolly Parton
"Not My Way Home" by Reba McEntire

But in trying to think how different people would interpret particular
songs, I've come up with a few that may be a bit offbeat, like -

"Late Night Grande Hotel" by Vince Gill (yes, I think it would work!)
"West Texas Sun" by Willie Nelson
"Banks of the Pontchartrain" by Ray Benson (Asleep At The Wheel)

I am also tempted to ponder a real fantasy tribute album featuring people
like Hank Williams, Patsy Cline ("Time Alone"?)and even Elvis....

I'm in the office right now, and it's not as if I haven't got anything else
to do, but this is quite fun!

The greatest Nanci cover has already been done in my opinion. When Emmylou
Harris sang "Gulf Coast Highway" together with Willie Nelson she finally gave
this incredible composition justice (I cannot understand Nanci's choice of the
guy from Hootie and the Blowfish for the duet on "Blue roses...". I know
they're friends, but still...)

Otherwise I think Patty Loveless might do a great version of "Love at the Five
and Dime", Jimmie Dale Gilmore might have succeeded with "Wouldn't that be
fine", "Saint Teresa of Availa" would have suited Kate Wolf and "Waiting for
love" might have been a fine duet between Guy Clark and Emmylou Harris. I also
have a few suggestions for "Late night Grande Hotel":
Trisha Yearwood, Emmylou Harris, Allison Moorer, Guy Clark etc.

I don't know how many of you on this list are musicians, but maybe we should
put together a Nanci tribute album ourselves? The people on the Guy Clark list
have put out two albums during the last couple of years and I think they turned
out great. With Internet and digital recordings this might be possible to work
out even though we live in different corners of the world. I play several
Nanci songs with my band so I might contribute with a track or two.

Well, it was a thought...

I've just spent 10 days in Toronto and Hamilton and have
discovered some great singers from that area. I've come home
with a dozen or so CDs of Canadian artists, mostly new to me. I
heard both Rob Lamothe and Lisa Winn perform while I was there.
Rob is from San Diego but now lives in Hamilton; Lisa is
Canadian. She's just released her first CD - Mother Earth -
which is exceptional. See www.lisawinn.com

Rob plays Germany and The Netherlands most years but I haven't
seen him here in the UK. Check him out. I bought his latest
recording 'I am here now' but he has released others -
www.roblamothe.com

I think both of them would appeal to Nanci fans. They did an
acoustic set in Hamilton Art Gallery one lunchtime - only spoilt
by a 6 year-old brat who kept demanding that they play the Spice
Girls or Shania Twain!

And why has no-one ever told me before how good Moxy Fruvous are?
Wow! And Amy Sky and Chantal Kreviazuk, too.

I'm sure Steve knows Rob Lamothe? I'm only sorry I didn't catch
one of *your* gigs while I was over there.

Greetings Nancifolk

I last posted about two years ago but I've still been lurking around. I
followed the Grateful Dead-Nanci discussion a few months ago and I would not
bring it up again except that when I took in Nanci and the Salt Lake
Symphony in Deer Valley, UT last Saturday, it meant that I have now attended
more Nanci shows than Dead events. I'm not sure of the significance of this
but I obviously will not be attending and more Dead shows and I cannot
imagine having Nanci perform in the area and not going.

As for the show itself, it was beautiful, but way too short. I'm sure the
setlist was similar to the rest of her summer symphony tour and she sounded
stronger than any other time I've heard her. I think the Gulf Coast Highway
was the best I've heard (Hooker's voice was also in rare form) and the
symphony arrangements were outstanding, particularly on Late Night Grande
Hotel. Of course the encore included Ford Econoline (an SLC favorite) and a
beautiful From a Distance (my daughter, who turned 16 the next day would
have been devastated had she not included this). Once again, it was the
shortest Nanci show I've been to, but that was the only disappointment.

One more note. As we were stopping to get snacks to take into the show, my
bride (nineteen years last week) and I noticed Blue Moon Belgian Ale in the
cooler and knew we had to have some. I'm sure many of you have discovered it
but it was a first for us and it will be a have-to-have for all future Nanci
concerts.
