(( The greatest Nanci cover has already been done in my opinion. When Emmylou
Harris sang "Gulf Coast Highway" together with Willie Nelson she finally gave
this incredible composition justice (I cannot understand Nanci's choice of the
guy from Hootie and the Blowfish for the duet on "Blue roses...". I know
they're friends, but still...) >>

I agree I don't really get Nanci's things for Hootie and the Blowfish, but
Nanci did do "Gulf Coast Highway" jusitce long before Emmylou did when she
first recorded it for the 1988 album "Little Love Affaris." The BRFTM
version seemed rather pointless to me.

Will think on some tribute songs and get back to the list.

Great idea, Marius! Keep in mind that the older generation of nancinetters had
already put together two tapes called "Unnecessary Plastic Object" (I and II).
Unfortunately, I joined the nancinet too late to participate in either
projects. And I'm sure there are many more of us from the newer NN generation
who would have loved to contribute. I particularly love the angle of using the
Internet. I wrote some different arrangements of a couple of Nanci songs and
would love to have a chance to share that with fellow Nanci fans. The
oldtimers would probably not be interested in doing this again, but perhaps
there would be enough interest among the newer generation of nancinetters to
pull a CD together. Let me know if you're serious and I'll be glad to help
organize this.

Donate,

It's just a few months since I joined this list and I had no idea that there's
already been tributes put together by listmembers. I was serious when I wrote
this, but I'm not really up to organizing this (at least alone) because my
computer skills and equipment are not great (and I don't actually know how to
arrange it). If someone wants to take the lead I could participate with a
couple of songs, but sadly that's all. I'm not sure how we should put together
this virtual (or not so virtual) album, as online only or CDR copies for sale
or some other way. If anyone has any thoughts on how we should arrange such a
thing it would be great to share it.
On the other hand if no one else are interested in this maybe we should do a
duo album with Nanci songs, Donate.

I'm probably one of the "oldtimers" (at 30 something!) but this is a perfect
opportunity to wave the flag for the digital revolution. Since I think
passing around songs is what folk music is all about, I'm all for any
project like this. Past organizers will tell you though, it's no easy job
putting together a compilation tape or CD. But with technology what it is,
this could be very simple now. Here's a low-tech but convenient solution:
Record your tapes of Nanci covers and convert them to MP3. It's easy, just
run a cable from the headphone jack of your tape recorder to the line in on
your sound card, then use Windows recorder to make it a .wav file, or you
could just record into your computer mic. Next, use any of the free
downloadable conversion applications to make your .wav file into a MP3.
Then, upload the files to a web site. See? Cheap, easy, low-maintenance,
just like the best dates. Here's an ingredient list:

1. Web Space - Anyone can volunteer space anywhere on the net, a free site
on geocities would suffice.

2. A Web Page - A front door containing hyperlinks to the MP3 files. A free
page anywhere would work.

3. Moderator - Volunteers? Donate? All the moderator would do is plug the
hyperlinks onto the page, and help folks locate space to store their MP3s.

4. Listeners - Announce to the list that your tribute song has been posted
to the site, and people will listen.

Those who wish to do more professionally produced covers can still do so,
they'll exist right beside living-room versions. The songs from the two
tapes/CDs that were done in the past can be added for the sake of
completion. Musicians in the group can even upload guitar or piano tracks
for others to record their vocals on to, or just sing along with. I'll be
the first to volunteer web space or to steer anyone in the direction of
finding free space of their on. Want to give it a go?

Warm Regards,
-Shawn

Dontate, Shawn and all!

I can not stand it any longer. I want to hear all of this music
that many may have.

I will:
Donate my website to make the homepage.
Donate as many pages as it takes to get the files uploaded.
Will receive any music that is in .wav format.
I will upload it to the website.
I will give credit first to Nanci and then to the
person who made the recording.
I will also make links back to the Homepages of
the best of the best Nanci Griffith sites.
I would hope that you would give me the opportunity
to make judgement if the recording is acceptable
quality to upload to the website.

I will NOT submitt it to any search engines.
As soon as the pages are complete I will give
you the address. Or better yet this is the
address that I will give it. You can pop in
and grab the files as I receive them.

So start recording and send those files my way.

You can send them to nanci@remembered.com

I hope I am not doing anything illegal here, if so
please someone let me know.

Donate...beat you out as an "oldtimer"...hehehee

Nothing illegal. The only way you can get in trouble is if you decide to
profit in some way from the project. Then it still isn't illegal, it just
means you must get a compulsory mechanical license from Nanci's publishing
company and pay royalties for whatever you sell. I guess the performing
rights organizations could consider you a performance venue, and ask for
license fees, but that's a long shot and there are much bigger fish for them
to fry. Even if they did that, all you'd have to do is close the web page.
I'm not a lawyer, but I've studied up a little on copyright law, and I'd be
happy to do this myself if not for time constraints.

Please let me know if I can offer any technical assistance to anyone. The
easiest program I know of for converting .wav files to .mp3 is Music Match
which is a free download from http://www.musicmatch.com With it you can
also record from your computer mic or line-in directly to MP3 and skip the
.wav step. Laura, you might want to post some rules on your page about the
size of files and what bandwidth to use, etc. If a lot of folks
participate, you may need more web space, I can help with that and I bet
some others here would too. I'm very anxious to hear submissions!

Warm Regards,
-Shawn

I've always really liked Nanci's original recording of Gulf Coast Highway
(can take or leave the Darius Rucker duet), but her performance of it at
Chastain in Atlanta this summer, with James Hooker & the ASO, was
exquisite....had more beauty & feeling than I've ever heard in it. Was a
stand-out song for me from that concert. Anyone else have that feeling in

Amber, what a sweet story! You probably saw Marius' suggestion of putting
together another Nanci tribute album? While there were some discouraging
remarks from oldtimers, I think it would be a great idea for another
generation of nancinetters to get a shot at a project like that. Even better,
if some of the young nancinetters would be willing to participate. Someone
else kindly pointed your post out to me .... how about it? C'mon guys, let a
new generation of fans have a shot at it, too!

Now you're just nicking ideas from nancijr. Last christmas time we decided
to make our own version of Unecessary PLastic Object and call it We Believe.
We had it planned down to actual songs... but somehow it fell apart. I
think the most common problem was that nobody's tape recorder had an actual
recording button. I will talk to the others involved and see if we can
resusitate it. You're welcome to join if you're really as youthful as you

Sounds like a wonderful idea. I don't know why I didn't get a copy of UPO2
(not around here for 1), though having no access to a tape player may have
been part of it...

Anyways, would love to hear these and other covers...

Setting up shop on a free server is easy enough to do, could set it up so
that interested parties can just go FTP 'em and not even worry about setting
up a Webpage at all (almost the ultimate in lazy solutions, though even more
lazy is just using Napster)

I have also enjoyed the discussion of the ideal Nanci covers, and
Marius' suggestion for a new (UPO type) project of Nancinetter covers.

So with all this talk about Nanci covers, I will take this opportunity
(if Bill P. allows) to do some more shameless self promotion of my CD
which has two Nanci covers. I am pleased to announce that it is now
available on-line at several outlets including our own Bill Lavery's

Also, as I am slowly reaching the break even point on this project, the
