Ladies and Gentlemen, there may be hope for Nashville yet. How 'bout that
Grand Ole Opry 75th Anniversary show last night? Lots of tradition, and not
a pop song in sight.

Martina McBride sang songs of Nanci's favorite Loretta Lynn. Trisha Yearwood
sang Patsy Cline. Reba sang Marty Robbins. Travis Tritt sang Johnny Cash,
and Travis and Patty Loveless did a R&B version of "Ring of Fire". Georgia's
own Whisperin' Bill Anderson did a whisperin' version of "Friends in Low
Places"- and got a standing ovation. And they all sounded great.

The only mistake they made was to let Vince Gill cover Hank Williams. That
job should have gone to my ex-neighbor Alan Jackson.

I read somewhere that the Opry has a new General Manager with plans for
major changes. If this show is an example of his work, he is on the right
track.

one Nanci track.  The CD is specially produced by Rounder Records.  I

since it doesn't have a regular Rounder catalog number.  It can be

This is a snippet from an interview with John Stewart from the November 
edition of Country Music People (UK).

Q: Do artists who have recorded your songs in the past, like Rosanne Cash 
and Nanci Griffith, come to you for material?

JS: Yes, they do. I don't want to put a jinx on it but Nanci is planning 
to do three of my songs on her next album.

I don't know the significance of this, does it mean Nanci is suffering 
from writers block, or does she have plenty of new material and going to 
mix it with outside songs. Three from one writer seems an awful lot on 
one record, no matter how good the writer concerned. Personally I want to 
hear new Nanci songs, not more of her covering other people's material. 
We have already had two "Other Voices" and for me that is sufficient at 
this juncture in her career.

Time will provide the answers.

Blue Roses from the Moons had its share of covers and originals and that mix 
works for me fairly well.  Although I do agree, three from the same person 
seems a lot. Perhaps she's doing a double record? One disc all original- one 
disc covers? Ah...
one can dream.....

Hi --

Yes, time will provide. It might be better to take a wait-and-see approach
to what songs are elected on the new album.  Many artists will record
several tunes over and above what's needed, then select the most cohesive
cuts after they see how they turn out.  At this stage, Nanci could just be
experimenting with different songs, going through the licensing process,
etc. It's also natural for artists to campaign to get their covers included
on albums.  This same thing happened a couple of years ago.  We heard lots
of rumors, some by other artists, about songs that would be included on
OVII.  After the re-count, it turned out differently.  Some were, some were
not.  --No prejudice intended toward Stewart.  He's a fine song-writer.

Thanks for the holiday wishes.   In this family, we don't cut our tree until
the last Sunday before Christmas (in Germany not until Christmas Eve).   But
then again, we use real wax candles on our tree, so it best be fresh.......

I believe it was here on NN that I first heard about the Judy Collins
performance at Wolf Trap.  Well, I just discovered the CD from that
performance, "Judy Collins, Live at Wolf Trap."  Like good wine, this lady just
keeps getting better with age!  I listened to the demo CD in Borders, and after
hearing "Danny Boy" and "Amazing Grace" I was on my way to the check-out
counter.  The recording quality is supurb, and Ms. Collins' voice is angelic
(and I don't think you have to be over 50 to enjoy this one).  And then I just
found the video taping of this show will be aired on PBS soon.  In San Antonio,
it will be shown December 10 at 6:00 -- followed by "Gordon Lightfoot: Live in
Reno."  Keep the VCR running!

Just about the same experience here, Rob. I heard it at Barnes and
Noble on their listening board and immediately bought it. Great
selection of songs, great backing. I noticed a few high notes that
Judy didn't quite get dead center, but nevertheless a truly wonderful
album. My favorite tracks are Send In The Clowns and City Of New
Orleans.

Good morning Nancinet,

Dan G. here. Been away for awhile as some of us
sometimes do. But I'm back with a tale to tell.

I recently had some major surgery done. Turned out to
be a complete success.

When I woke up in the recovery room, the first thing I
wanted to know (after am I alive?) is whether the
nurse knew who Nanci Griffith was. She didn't, but
assured me she'd check her out at first chance. Then,
I was in such a gleeful mood I started belting out
some lines from "Listen to the Radio". Must have
sounded terrible but it sure felt good.

In fact, often during the 10 days in the hospital
preceding the surgery, late at night among the screams
down the hall and the IV alarms going off all around,
I would sing myself to tears and eventual sleep with
"Where would I be in times like these without the
songs that Nanci wrote?"

Thank God for Nanci Griffith and the music she has
given us all.

1.    Please let Laura and/or me know if you are still interested
in participating in UPO3.  We have had only a few submissions and

2.    On a non-Nanci related note:    Does anyone know of a
Cowboy Junkies recording that includes the song "The Water is
Wide"?   Last night, I caught the back end of a movie on TV: 
"The River Wild".  During the credits, CJ sang this old folk
hymn.  I've heard it by so many artists over the years (one of my
favorites is the one from Lilith Fair 1999), but I was
particularly moved by Margo Timmins' rendition of it -- her voice
is just so incredible.  It was kind of eerie hearing that
song last night because I had just performed the "sacred" version
of this hymn in an SATB quartet during Sunday service yesterday
morning.

Hi Donate,

You find "The water is wide" on the Cowboys Junkies CD "Rareties, B-sides
and slow, sad waltzes" from late last or early this year.
And I must say Margo makes different from a lot of versions I know..
