Well, I usually wouldn't do this. But since the house is sold and all,
here's a recent picture of a couple of NanciNetter's outside the house in
Franklin. http://www.geocities.com/trailzzone/shack.jpg

I should have known better then to take you seriously, Shawn!

I object more to his using a photograph showing Kenn's
good side, not mine. And the house is nicer than it
looks--you can't see the pool and the poolhouse in the
picture.

As one who expressed concern over what I experienced at the RMFF, it was good
to hear that Nanci was back in fine form in Philly. Access to that type of
information is why I joined the NanciNet to begin with. Thank you for
keeping me up to date, I can rest easier.

BTW: If the use of the word Philly is offensive to anyone, I apologize.

Subject: NN: Nanci at Interlochen
   Date: Tue, 29 Aug 2000 09:42:37 -0400
   From: nmrs@freeway.net

My husband commented in July at Interlochen that Nanci and James Hooker
seemed really tired. And I had to agree that at certain points in the
concert their energy level did not seem to meet the energy level of the
band and the orchestra. However, they were really well received by the
audience and everyone seemed to listen intently to whatever Nanci had to
say whenever she said anything political or humerous and there was
definitely no lack of quality in their performances. They seemed happy
even though exhausted. I would imagine after weeks of performing every
night or nearly every night anyone would be tired. Perhaps she needs
time off. I saw Bob Dylan a number of years ago when he was going
through something (later I read that he was tired of performing his old
stuff and wanted people to come to hear his new stuff and that all his
concerts were being described as lackluster, etc.). Well, I am sorry
but as a product of the 60's I just can't help wanting to see him
perform the music I love. He finally did some old stuff but he didn't
seem too happy about it. And he barely acknowledged the audience much
less talked to us! I never got to see him before and I don't know if I
would try it again. Also we saw Cheryl Wheeler a few years ago and she
gave one of the most delightful performances I have ever seen and turned
me into a real fan. A while back someone here wrote about her giving a
concert in a bad mood that basically ruined her whole performance and
that person's opinion of her as well.

On another note, we got to see the Austin City Limits singer/songwriter
show with Emmylou, Dave Matthews, Patty Griffith, and Julie and Buddy
Miller. Sigh. What a wonderful hour. Of course, the fact they started
with "Gulfcoast Highway" got me interested immediately.

see in October at Verde Valley???

This all has something to do with the argument that
Lee Satterfield is the real Nanci Griffith and that
"Nanci Griffith" is merely whomever Lee hires to be
Nanci Griffith for that tour.

Reid, shhhhh. I thought they were trying to keep the Menudo connection on
the QT.

By the way, Ladybird got her name as a child when she was compared to a
ladybird beetle. I am just happy that the local term was not "Ladybug", as
it was in my neighborhood.

NNers -

I did what I should have done before - e-mailed
Planet Bluegrass, the promoters for the RMFF.
Below is Craig Ferguson's kind response. Somewhat
revealing, certainly enough to sate my curiosity.
Nice spin on the last paragraph.

One final comment before I leave the list: while it's
great to be a dedicated Nanci fan and to defend her
good name and reputation, some of you listers
rushed in on defense without trying to understand
what we were saying.

When we said she had a bad night, it wasn't because
"Five and Dime" was missing a harmony. It's
horrible to watch a respected artist melt down on
stage, and I hope that you never have to see it
happen to NG like we did. Imagine how disappointed
and bewildered you would have felt if you had bought an
expensive ticket, had high expectations, and then didn't
even receive an explanation of why the show was
canceled or curtailed.

Next time someone writes in something less than
positive about Nanci, please take a moment to
consider that the question is written out of concern.
Do not just dismiss the author as a cranky complainer.

Best regards and cheers to you all -

Larry

I think I'm gettin' the hang of this Solid Gold Bluegrass site. You
know, the one that webcasts MerleFest performances. You have to register
to get access to the library, but it's free. Each week, they make about
twelve performances available- not all MerleFest. Come Monday, they put
those twelve back in storage and post twelve more.

This week, the MerleFest performances include a great set from Nickel
Creek with special guest Tony Rice, and a fiddle-only set with Darrel
Anger and Natalie McMaster doing some improvising. Both of those include
video. There's also a studio session from Norman Blake and Tut Taylor.
If anyone has a broadband connection, you can get a preview of the "Big
Mon" album from Ricky Skaggs and guests.

Who's familiar with Natalie McMaster? I've always avoided her because I
got the idea somewhere that she did most of her singing in Gaelic. Is
that true? Does she even sing at all?

Natalie McMaster is one of the most wonderful fiddle players... oh to play
like that... She does sing, but i don't *think* she always sings in gaelic.
But even if she does, try hr music... gaelic words are surprisingly easy to
listen to.

Subject: NN: RMFF performance
   Date: Tue, 29 Aug 2000 09:04:02 -0600
   From: Doug W (dwigton@usa.net>

Hi all,

I have been a lurker on this list for the last two weeks. I joined just
because I was concerned about what happened a Lyons. I have been a Nanci
Griffith fan for years, have all her discs, and have seen her many times in
concert. Including Telluride and Lyons three years ago. I have always
enjoyed her performances tremendously. And I was very concerned about what
we witnessed at Lyons.

So here's a little information. Some of it is from second parties, and
therefore is heresay, however, some of it may be true. One of the festival
volunteer workers told me that Nanci's flight frrom Oregon to Denver was
delayed significantly (probably flew United) (also, there was a raging
electrical and rain storm in the area.). When she arrived, the hotel had
given her room away (hard to believe that anyone who travels a lot wouldn't
book for late arrival, but, oh well). The airlines also lost a couple of
guitars and one of her bags. (Sorry, I travel a lot in my work, and the
above is only in a days work. If I got tremendously upset every time this
sort of stuff happened I'd be a nervous wreck!). There was also a rumor
that a close friend had passed away a couple of days before the concert
(anyone know anything about that? )

Back to observation. She came on the stage acting as if she was angry.
Neither my wife nor I believe she smiled once, except at the end of the
concert when Tom Rush came on stage with her. Several times she lost the
lyrics and at those times Jim Hooker stepped in to fill out the verse to
cover for her. My wife was watching one part of the concert through
binoculars and saw her turn to the side and brush away a tear. At one point
she appeared to speak harshly to one of the band members, when the mistake
appeared to be hers.

She definitely took great offense when, in the middle of a long intro
discussing land mines, we in the audience were treated to a HUGE shooting
star. The audience oooohed, then giggled a little, and there was a
smattering of childlike applause. Nanci couldn't see this, and immediately
got miffed. After that she just couldn't wait to get off stage. At that
point her attitude was more like rage.

Back to reports. Two different people who were backstage after the
concert reported that Nanci burst into tears immediately after the concert
and her road manager tried to explain what had happened with the shooting
star, but she would have no part of it. She stated that the audience was
absolutely horrible and that she would never play Lyons again (actually, I
don't think she has to worry about that).

As my wife and I walked back to the campground we found ourselves
bickering with each other, till my wife stopped and said, "this stuff is
Nanci's stuff, it's not ours. Let her have it." That lightened the mood.

If Nanci had just said at the start of the concert, "I'm tired and I've
had a really rough week. Excuse me if I'm not up to form", the entire
audience would have been on her side throughout. (Not that they weren't
anyway. People came from all over the country and from outside the country
to see her. Attendance at that day of the festival was a record, and there
were people packed in all the way to the end of the festival grounds. ) I
think it's a shame for her as well as for the audience.

I still love Nanci's music, and I hope she gets the rest and therapy she
needs. All of us push it a little too hard once in a while.

On a positive note, the RMFF was WONDERFUL otherwise. What can one say
about a laid back, mellow festival that has Emmy Lou, Cheryl Wheeler, Tom
Rush, David Crosby, Greg Brown, and a raft of lesser known, but equally
wonderful folks. Cheryl was in tremendous form (new satirical song about
the airlines, hilarious!), Tom Rush was just spectacular, and Emmy Lou loved
the audience, and we loved her back.

I just got back from Philadelphia where my wife and I saw Nanci perform
at the Folk Festival. It was a fine performance and Nanci seemed
energetic throughout. It was the third time we saw her live and I heard
her announcement to take a year off and devote her time to the effort to
rid the world of landmines. She spoke with a great deal of emotion about
this issue including her admiration of those persons taking the lead in
this fight. It is obvious that at this time she wants to temporarily put
her music career on hold while she participates in this worthy cause. I
think that the year off may revitalize her in regards to her interest in
live performing. Every artist needs a break now and then and Nanci
deserves the chance to take some time off. I look forward to her next
album, with hopefully some new songs.

Hey, folks,

As you know, it is often necessary for a listowner to take steps to avoid spam
or flame wars. With that in mind, the configuration file fo this list contains
a series of filters designed to capture spam, to derail inflammatory topics, to
divert administrative requests, or even (very seldom) occasionally to block
folks who have abused their privileges on the list.

Posts that trigger the filter are routed to me for review and approval. This
does occasion delay in the original post making it to the list.

There are things you can to do avoid delays of your posts:

1. Send ASCII text only, with no attachments. While most of us these days can
receive formatted mail, many of our members can not do so, and the list server
tends to OD on formatted text, sometimes. If you don't know how to change your
email settings to send ASCII, drop me a note and I'll try to help.

2. Avoid words like "subscribe" or any part thereof, or any words tht you might
expect to receive in an advertising ("FREE," for example). Some words are
filtered from subject matters, others from the entire message.
If you would like a list of the words that would trip the filters, drop me
a note.

3. Send your messages only to nanci@world.std.com (never to nanci-digest).
All messages to the digest get bounced to me, and delay things.

And please, please try to keep posts at least a LITTLE Nanci-related!

Bill
