Picked up my copy of Emmylou's "Red Dirt Girl" today and after one listen
I have to say, it is challenging and pushing at boundaries, quite which
boundaries I'm not too sure. There are three songs that have set the mind
racing and quickened the pulse, namely "Michelangelo", "Red Dirt Girl"
and "Bang The Drum Slowly". The rest is certainly going to take time to
seep into the conscience and it's not the sort of cd you stick in the
player as ear candy or background music. Still it's these challenging
listens that tend to stay with you longer and offer richer rewards. It
will be interesting to see how much of the work is featured in her live
shows, here in the UK. Also nice to note that Patty Griffin is coming
over as the support act.

I'm surprised nobody on the lists has mentioned Kevin Gordon's "Down To
The Well", as I know he has many admirers out there, particularly amongst
the Kate crowd (partly due to his co-writing with her). I think it's a
marvellous cd and features one of my favourite cuts of the year, the
rockin' "Marina Takes Her Aim".

I also picked up "Red Dirt Girl" the day before yesterday and I was going to
write some words, but basically you wrote the exact same things I was going to
write. It's the same three songs that caught my ear too plus "My Antonia".
Emmylou has put out a brave album that really needs time to understand, even
the lyrics are more complicated this time. I never would have thought that she
was going to create an album with so much Lanois inspiration (still Lanois is
not involved). When Emmylou tours with Spyboy they will never manage (or try)
to recreate the atmosphere live, but I really hope they put some of these songs
into the setlist. I'm going to
see her in November when she visits Norway and now I'm looking even more
forward to it.
I might add that I bought this album along with Steve Young and Andy Griggs
albums on a few hours trip to another city in Norway, do I have to add the road
home was a pleasant one with these albums cranked in the car stereo!?!

Agreed. The whole album seems to have a Daniel Lanois sound, but with
far less percussion than Wrecking Ball. The album, however, was produced
by Malcom Burn. He and Lanois were musicians on some of Bob Dylan's
albums, but I couldn't find any other associations. Possibly the
Lanoiesque feeling is Emmylou's idea.

Bang The Drum Slowly was written about Emmylou's father, a heavily
decorated marine pilot during Nam. He died in 1993, and the lyrics
are essentially all the things Emmylou wanted to talk to her father
about, but never had the chance. At the end of the song Emmylou hums
*Taps* softly, and it will put a tear on your cheek.

*The Boy From Tupilo* is another song with several references to a
buffalo, that makes me think that Emmylou might also be a fan of
Kate Campbell (Tupalo Is Too Far, Like A Buffalo). I'm not surprised
by this at all.

This album is not folk or country as we know it. The record company is
Nonesuch, and they have it classified as pop rock, but that doesn't
make any sense to me, either. Whatever it is, I love it. Emmylou tells
Billboard magazine that she "didn't want to bring the same old
casserole to the potluck dinner this time." Whatever they want to
classify it as, I'm still enjoying the feast.

Had gum surgery yesterday morning and didn't sleep too well last
night. I'm headed back to bed. More later.

Ed,

Thanks for the background on some of the songs. Especially "Bang the drum
slowly" are given a new depth when I know what lies behind the words. All in
all this album seems to include some of Emmylou's greatest and most personal
songs ever. After more listening I think this album is better than "Wrecking
ball". Even if there's a lot of experimental elements to this album it seems
like the songs include all the essential fundaments that most of Emmylou's
material are built upon. Songs like "Red dirt girl" could actually been a Nash
Ramblers song when given the right instrumentation. I know I'll spend a lot of
time listening to this album throughout this
autumn!

Dearly beloved,

You missed it this year but I urge all of you to
consider attending the Festivals Acadiens in
Lafayette, La. when it comes around September 2001. A
wonderful spread of food, music, and other good stuff.
I think this year's highlight performances were by a
band organized in tribute to a local musician/doctor
which seeks to set up a chair in local music at the
University of South Louisiana in his honor--with Sonny
Landreith on slide guitar and other great musicians,
it was joined this festival by Michael Doucet, whom
you surely all know from Beausoleil. Of course, next
week here in Louisiana we have the Sugar Cane Festival
in New Iberia, and the weekend after the Catfish
Festival in Melville, and the week after the Cattle
Festival in Abbeville, and the week after the Gumbo
Cook-off and then the Yam festival is just around the
corner.... it's a busy autumn here in south Louisiana.

While reading through a blurb in yesterday's paper announcing the
upcoming concert by the Dixie Chicks at our local huge arena, Assembly
Hall, on October 26th, I was astounded to read a comment by the arenas
director.
When asked who would open the show, Assembly Hall Director Kevin
Ullestad said "Ricky Scaggs, Willie Nelson or Nanci Griffith have
rotated in opening for the trio on recent gigs. It's likey we'll get one
of those three. We don't know yet."

I'm guessing that Mr. Ullestad had no clue what he was talking about,
right? Or, did I miss something along the way? It's not so hard to
imagine Ricky or Willie, but I really can't imagine Nanci opening.

Well, yeah Petop, you got a point there. I can't imagine Willie doing
that, either. However, strange things do occur, i.e. Willie is on TV
right now (FarmAid2000), and none other than Tipper Gore herself is
banging away on the congas tonight in Willie's band :-)

We are waning right now, full moon was a few nights back, but I love the
thought of Tipper and Willie together. I love the thought of Tipper as drum
leader in a wiccan circle during a full moon. I like Tipper, though,

OK I may well be the only one who thinks this but when has that ever stopped
me from expressing an opinion?! I don't find it that hard to imagine Nanci
opening for the Dixie Chicks at all. Sure they have different specific
musical styles, sure the Chicks have a quite different sound form nanci's
recent symphony stuff, but when you think about it, the Loretta-Lynn-esque
phenomenon of a female singer/singers writing their own songs, playing their
own guitar and other instruments, getting out there, having a good time on
stage, giving their fans a great show...don't Nanci and teh Chicks both fit
that descroption? As well as Loretta and some of the other heroes in music
Nanci has mentioned?

Frankyl I think the Buddy Holly/Crickets amterial differs far more form
Nanci's style than the Dixie Chicks' stuff. So does "No Expectations" from
the Stone Country CD.

As always, this is just IMHO, arguments welcome. :-)

It has nothing to do with compatability and everying to do with stature.
Nanci is at a level right now that she is simply not going to be an "opening
act" on anybody's tour unless it is someone else of a legendary stature. As
much as I like (or used to like) the Dixie Chicks, I don't rank them at that
"legendary" level.

Isn't this stature thing only as much of an issue as Nanci's ego would make
it? That is, yeah I know the headline act makes a lot more momey etc. etc.
but if as far as Nanci is concerned it's a chance for her to play mor good
music, expose more people to her stuff, adn expose some of her fan base to
the Dixie Chicks, whose music Nanci presumably thinks highly of or she
wouldn't be opening for them. Sure we can all sit around and say, Nanci's
so much better than they are, etc. etc. (and in a lot of waye we're right)
but I still do't think it's that ridiculous for her top be opening
with/peforming at the same venue at the Chicks.

I agree. I admit I don't know the politics of "who's on top" and how
that would determine who could open for who, but I immediately thought
Nanci was just promoting someone she likes as she has done many times.
That isn't saying that this did happen but I think it could have. I have

Then I open for Shawn Kimbro (with Bocelli perhaps?).

All this talk about various opening acts for the Dixie Chicks has gotten me
thinking about opening acts I've seen. And how sometimes the opening act
should be the headliner and vice versa.

For example, I saw Ry Cooder and John Lee Hooker, in duet, open for Robert
Cray, when it should've been just the opposite.

Also, I saw Graham Parker and the Rumour open for Thin Lizzy. Didn't even
stay for Thin Lizzy. Graham was so volcanic, he left a huge hole in the
stage: no one could follow that band when it was on.

I also saw Poco open for the Faces -- and while Rod and the Faces were a
great band (every third song, because they were so drunk), they could barely
follow Poco which was a fantastic live band in its early Richie Furay days.

Anybody else out there have "opening act" stories?

Yeah - good one!
I saw Blondie in 1976 (when they were full of creative punky energy) open for
Television! Who? you might well ask - well, they were a sort of bad version of
Talking Heads, and their one album 'of note', Marquee Moon, was laughably
included in a lot of all-time top 10 great album lists of influential magazines
around that time, thus making it IMO one of the 3 most over-rated albums of all
time.

And now you're no doubt dying to know what my other 2 are... OK, you've forced
it out of me: Gram Parsons 'Grievous Angel' (although I adore the Byrds) and
Marvin Gaye's 'What's Going On', which I recently bought for a second time on
the strength of it's reputation (in case I missed something first time around),
and yup, it still sounds like a self-indulgent cliched soundtrack to a
'Blacksploitation' movie to me!

But that's a whole other topic... apologies for straying.
