Hey there --

Just in case anyone's interested, and if you don't want to wait for it on
the radio, the 2001 IBMA (International Bluegrass Music Association) Awards
Show is up online absolutely free at
(http://stations.mp3s.com/stations/209/12th_annual_ibma_awards_show.html>.
If
you haven't heard Skagg's version of "Shady Grove" off his new album, tuning
into the broadcast for the first few minutes is a real treat. If that don't
light your fire, your wood's wet! And his next song, hmmm, a little
skatgrass if you know what I mean. Good stuff.

All my best,

All this talk of Reading, I was just going to say that the gig at The Anvil
in Basingstoke was excellent (just as good as Reading, I'm sure), despite
the reputation Basingstoke has as one of those ugly, concrete "new towns"
surrounded by roundabouts. Tanita Tikaram also spent her formulative years
here (thanks Susan). Even Tom Russel had a smirk on his face when he said
the
word..."Basingstoke"

The Basingstoke set list was, I think, identical to Reading; I went to
both.

I've not been to The Anvil before, even though it is relatively close to
home. It produced a much warmer sound than Reading and the show overall
was even more relaxed (took 15 minutes longer to get through the same
set). Nanci was even more chatty than the previous night, even more
affected by From a Distance, even more confident with Shaking out the
Snow. And Tom Russell was brilliant, again!

What a great cd release year this continues to be! In case any of you
Kasey Chambers fans plan to wait until 2002 for the U.S. release of
BARRICADES & BRICKWALLS, don't. It's really extraordinary. After all
those wonderful performances on the Dead Ringer Band cd's and the
lovely CAPTAIN solo cd, she continues to grow as an artist.
The new cd reveals her continuing influences (a great performance of
Gram Parson's "Still Feeling Blue"), her knack for getting the right
folks to work with her (Lucinda Williams, Buddy Miller), and her growing
sophistication as a song writer (it's nice to hear someone so young
writing protest songs--her final cut "Ignorance"). The tears/crying
imagery throughout many of the songs is beautiful and reminds me of
similar themes in Julie Miller's BROKEN THINGS. I believe both Bill
Lavery at Village Records and Miles of Music is carrying the import.
I ordered mine from EMI Australia at a rather good price.

   Date: Mon, 08 Oct 2001 17:30:55 -0400

I am either going to show that I am extremely dense here, or that I see
the situation a bit more clearly than some, when I say that Nanci's
comment does not seem like a dig at all to me but simply an innocent
comment made to show both the differences and the similarities between
herself and Madonna.
They both have had their share of bad press, and both have still
prevailed in their careers, and I am sure that Nanci does not hold
it against anyone trying to learn guitar as she has commented on her
own problems with playing the piano with two hands.
So until someone actually gets a chance to talk to Nanci about it,
can't we give her the benefit of the doubt and take it just as Nanci
trying to add some gentle humor into her performance and not a stab
or a dig or anything hurtful at all. Please.
Best wishes,
DJ

Amen to this! Besides, when i first read it, i thought it was hilarious...
not at all because Madonna's playing the guitar, but because the idea of
comparing Nanci and Madonna is simply funny. It's comparing the beauty of a

daisy to the beauty of a tiger lily. It's putting a meercat next to an
elephant at the zoo. It's just a funny pairing to think of. Can anyone
imagine a joint concert between the two?

Anyways, that's my take, for what it's worth.

Mike -- thanks so much for clarifying this. It certainly puts the whole
scene into a different light -- it seems that Nanci did indeed make this
remark in good humor. Glad to hear it --- my bad, obviously! This
story had followed the controversial Faith Hill incident and thus I felt a
bit irritated when I read the original post. It really wasn't worth my
commenting in the first place, but I guess I must have had too much time on
my hands at the time I wrote my message. Wasn't it on Friday, shortly
before Happy Hour? That should explain my inexcusable faux pas....... no
vodka in my system yet!):):). Last week we talked about alcohol making
us do things we later regret. In my case, it's clearly the lack
thereof...... and the additional handicap of being a blonde...:).

To John Graveling, Christina, Martin and everyone else whom I may have
offended with my remarks last week, my sincere apologies!!!! I certainly
didn't want to insult your aNGel, nor anyone else on this list. I was
obviously much too outspoken and clearly shouldn't participate in these
discussions if I can't keep my sometimes-not-so-popular-views to myself.
I tend not to take these things too seriously -- there are some really
important things in life to get worked up about and this isn't one of them.
But I do respect your feelings and your entitlement to take offense at
anything you choose.

I have been a Nanci fan for years and still love (and occasionally perform)
her songs. I do not, however, believe she is a saint or that she belongs
on an untouchable pedestal. There are only about two or three humans in
this world that I would be willing to give such status to. Thus, I
probably don't belong on this list -- my life is much too full right now
to waste precious minutes on apologizing every time I express my views
here. I have enjoyed quite a number of discussions and posts that have
come through here and I am most grateful for some of the friends I've made
on this list. Please do continue to stay in touch with me off-list:
(dvbgardner@genelogic.com or musikerin4u@yahoo.com).

Also .... to those who had expressed an interest in getting tapes of my
new originals: I'll be recording all next week and hope to have copies
made within the month. Please e-mail me privately if you're still
interested, and be patient -- it can take me months sometimes to finish a
project. Remember I'm a struggling writer and musician surviving in the
world of corporate law by day -- in addition to raising a family, charity
work and community activism, changing my own oil and spark plugs in my car,
etc. .... well, you get the picture. It takes me months sometimes to
finish a project -- so be patient, please.

Again, my sincere apologies to all the Nanci fans who were upset by my
opinions. Try to take it easy; find some worthwhile fulfillment in your
lives and be fluid --some battles just aren't worth pickin'. Peace
and blessings to all of you!

Just a reminder that if anyone wants to post their concert reviews on our

I do believe in freedom of speech, and I have put up all the reviews that I

I have and it was actually a funny bit. Harry Chapin (may he rest in
peace) had this "1,000 Pounds of Bananas" bit he would do in his live shows.

The gimmick was that he could not come up with a way to end the song. He had

several options and he would perform each one of those. But after each
option
he would tell the audience he had asked the band's opinion of the ending,
and
the band would say (and the entire audience would respond) "Harry, it
sucks!"
The first time that happened, Harry would then offer an explanation to the
audience saying the word "sucks" as used here did not have sexual
connotations but in fact was a descriptive musical term usually applied to
the Osmonds.

dress she had on. She was carrying a white parasol. I only saw her
for one second. She didn't see me at all, but I'll bet a month
hasn't gone by since that I haven't thought of that girl."

word "sucks" here in reference to music of some sort which I've long

creative circles. Sucks is bad, doesn't suck is good, there's no in

Hey Shawn---

Let me be the new flame target, I bought one of those
asbestos suits at the local Army-Navy store,
(they were out of gas masks and I had an obsessive
compulsion to buy something para-military).

I would just like to reintroduce myself: I've been
lurking for the last 2 years and a Nanci Net, and
subscriber for @ 3yrs. I saw Nanci once,a couple of
years ago in Virginia.

I used to DJ in a disco bar right behind the Hole In
the Wall where Nancy literally was the Sunday night
msical staple for years. Nanci once spoke to me on the
way out of the "Hole". She was on stage, sitting on a
barstool with her guitar and a big ol beer sitting at
her feet. She was half-lit (one of the Hole in the
Wall's performer perks was all the free draught beer
you could drink without makin a fool of yourself) and
told me to "Come on back sometime when you can sit
down and listen". (There was a time when Nanci had to
lasso passerbys to listen to her perform). Before
Nanci would perform, Ladelle (the headwaitress)at The
Hole inthe Wall would religously go into the Men's
room with Comet and a scrub brush in hand to remove
all lewd Nanci grafitti including: "For a good time
call Nanci 47#-####" And it really was her number at
that time.
There used to a time when we were a kinder and gentler
nation that grafitti was actually an accepted art form
at least in the Men's room of the Hole in the Wall
(pencil only please). After all, every Sunday night
Ladelle had to delete to chronically reappearing lewd
Nanci grafitti. So anyway that is my connection to
Nanci, at least all that I'm willing to admit to
without a subpoena.

The point of my longwindedness is this: IMHO far too
many Nancinetter's take themselves far too seriously,
and engage their little typing fingers way too fast,
responding to, and getting bent out of shape by
unsubstantiated 2nd hand information, speculation,and
half-truths. Along with that there are just too many
cry-babies obsessing over minutae and irrelevant
details that in the whole scheme of things just don't
matter. There is a real world out there and I think
that we should focus a little more on that, rather
than being a bunch of Clocks without hands just
ticking the time away.

Oh by the way......... some kind soul on this list
introduced me to the whimsical lighthearted musical
musings of Deirdre Flint. Whomevere you are i say
THANK YOU. Everyone needs to go to MP3.com and
download her cheerleader song, and The BOOB FAIRY.
They are hilarious, and this doctor's RX for the
NanciNet disease.

The ignorant can feel free to flame away.
I wanna try out my new asbestos suit ;-)!!
