Subject: NN: Meteor shower terrific!

   From: Mike Chesman (chesman@preferred.com>

I haven't received any postings from Nancinet for the last couple of days
and thought maybe the list was having some technical difficulties. Thought
a quick post would tell me if the system was working...

Did any of you folks watch the Leonid Shower on Sunday morning?
I visited friends in Southwest Virginia where about 15 stargazers gathered
on a mountain ridge for the event. At 2 a.m. E.S.T. it looked like it was
going to be an average Leonid shower with about 30 - 50 meteors per hour but
as the night progressed it just kept getting better. The peak came for us
between 4:45 and 5:30 a.m. E.S.T. It was absolutely amazing almost every
few seconds there was one or more shooting stars sailing by. Near dawn, the
constellation of Leo was nearly overhead so the meteors surrounded us in all
directions. It was impossible for one person to take them all in. We
estimated that the rate easily exceeded the 800 meteors per hour that was
predicted. I don't imagine I'll ever get to see a meteor shower that good
again. It was worth staying up all night.

The Leonid shower has special meaning for me, so I camped Saturday night in
an 18th century log cabin back up against Clinch Mountain. It was far
enough away from city light pollution but smoke from area forest fires
limited visibility. Nevertheless, we counted over 300 falling stars between
3:30 and 4:30. The most interesting part for me was the meteors that seemed
to originate from directly overhead. They didn't last as long as some of
the others but they were very intense and, I guess it must have been the
smoke in the air but for some reason the trails appeared very blue. I've
already made plans for the ones in 2099!

All my best,
-Shawn

Shawn, Mike -- Thanks for sharing your experiences. We are sorry we
missed the showers. The 15-year old son of my friend and former music
partner was killed in a car crash Sunday morning. Writing the music for
his service these past two days was probably the hardest thing I've ever
had to do in my life.
For the believers among my nancinet friends -- please keep the family of
Chris in your prayers. There cannot be anything harder in this world
than having to bury your child......

Hug your kids tonight when you get home.
Love and peace to all of you.

Dear Donate,

My heart goes out to you and to the parents of the teenager who died. It is
a wonderful gift that you could write music for the service.

I think you might know that I am a bereaved parent also. Our son Ethan lived
just 4 1/ 2 months. It is indeed the hardest loss imaginable. We're coming
up on the fifth anniversary of his death, and sometimes it is still an almost
overwhelming grief to bear.

Your friends need to know that they are not alone. It is so good that you
are there for them. Also, when they get to the point of wanting to reach
out, would you please let them know that there are wonderful support groups
all over the country for bereaved parents--one is called Compassionate
Friends and has chapters in most states. There are also some excellent
groups available on-line, and I can put them in touch with one of those
groups called Walking With Angels, a discussion group to which I subscribe.

Take care of yourself. This is a hard experience for you, too. And I'm sure
there are lots of NNers praying for you and your friends. Good people on
this list!

Sabrina in Mpls.
