Howdy, Griffons!
Seems like the winter is getting ready to come on in after a few
opening salvos. Heck, it might even drop down below 40 here on the
Texas coast. ;-) Just in time for the indoors downtime is the annual
release of a compilation CD from Austin's KGSR-FM. Check it out at
their website, (http://www.kgsr.com> You can order on the web at
(http://www.waterloorecords.com> or you can call Waterloo Records on the
phone.
Proceeds from sales of the CD benefit the SIMS Foundation, which
provides low-cost health insurance to Austin's music community.
Lucinda Williams is on the cover, and she sings "Blue" on the CD. All
the songs on the CD were performed live on the air on KGSR over the past
year. Nanci sings "It's A Hard Life Wherever You Go", Slaid Cleeves
does "One Good Year", and a host of others. 37 songs in all.
I noticed there are some yo-yos selling the CD on Ebay for about
twice the purchase price, and you can order it on the web at the usual
price. Suckers born every minute. You guys get the good scoop here on
the NG email list. Yayyyy!

Enjoy!

Thanks, Alison, for sending in this link. Nanci's voice sounds ragged
and overworked, but I still enjoyed this tremendously.

Thanks Alison. I've not seen her do 'Two For the Road' live before as I
recall. I would agree that her voice sounds like too much touring combined
with too many cigarettes. But still nice to hear. Come to think of it, the
Paul Carrack song (Where Would I Be) just seems not to be in her key.

I agree Ken:

I'm having second thoughts about dropping $150 for the
pair of tix at Keswick Theatre in North Philly on Dec
6th. There is an all-star line up but I do hesitate
to spend that kind of money.
Has anyone been to the Keswick?

Sarha W. is the rest of the line-up worth the price of
admission? (IYHO ;-)

If you mean me, and I don't know the Keswick...Oh, I'm a bad one to
ask.. are they worth it? Every penny!!! Would I do it? not on your
life. And I'm the one who adores Nanci live, and I'd sell my husband
down the river for Bruce Cockburn (well...)

I'm just not big fan of "taste tests." And I hate songwriters in the
round, etc. Too much of what you don't want, not enough of what you do.

I LOVE what I'm doing right now...drinking a scotch, turning up a volume
(in this case Tom Waits) and being able to LISTEN, hear the words...no
crowds noise, no margarita machines in the smaller venues...

Well, never mind...a tiny taste of Bruce will leave you way too anxious
for more...Start with his newest, work backward...there is nothing not
worth the price of admission there.

If you can make the trip to Charleston, it's one of
the best entertainment buys around. Tickets $5.50
advance; $8.00 at the door, if I remember correctly.

Hope all of you had an enjoyable Thanksgiving!

P.S. What's with the cover of the latest Shelby
Lynne's CD? Why must a performer as talented as her
try to emulate the Shania of Twain by seeing how far
she can push the envelope in terms of what's explicit
yet still acceptable? - SVG

A belated Thanksgiving greeting to all of you.

I have been listening to so much music and have been inspired by the
great sounds again.

Just listening to Oh Brother Where Art Thou and loving the lyrics and
sounds. Alison Krauss' voice haunts me again.

To all my friends on the nancinet who sent caring messages these
past few days --- thank you so much!!!!
Also thanks to Sabrina and others who have provided valuable support
information for grieving parents. I will pass this on to my friends.

Chris was a pre-Olympic hopeful in diving and a gifted guitarist and
songwriter. At the tender age of 15, it is amazing how prolific he
had been these past couple of years with his creations.

I wrote a song for him ("Sleep now, sweet Prince") and one of my verses
addresses the musician.....

"All your music reached the ears of Heaven.
Not a single note was in vain.
You are needed now in the choir of angels.
Your voice here is gone, but your songs still remain..."

There must have been close to 500 people at the church.
I was honored to provide the music for the service -- and humbled.
And the thought of what it would be like if it were my own child
laying in that casket was unbearable...
please keep Chris' parents and sister in your thoughts and prayers
as they learn to live without this sparkling light in their lives.

Again, thanks for everyone's kind messages.

Peace,

Sabrina, Donate and NN:

Sabrina is right: the most important thing you can do
is to be there, and be there, and be there. Our baby
son died last month after ten beautiful weeks of life
and a battle with heart surgery. I cannot tell you
how great the support from the loving people around us
has been. But equally, it has been so hurtful to see
the few whom we thought would come close, disappear
into awkwardness and avoidance. I've also been in
lurk mode for a while, but some of my "friends out in
the madness" have been the truest friends indeed.
Please know that you are doing a wonderful work by
staying by their side, despite the discomfort it
causes. "There's no need for any human being to ever
be complacent." You warm my heart.

Oh Amy, I am so sorry about the loss of your child!
I think I remember your announcement on nancinet of his birth.
Please know that you have many good friends here on the net, if
you want to talk about it.
I am glad you have good support around you and I'm equally sad
that there are others who seem to shy away from you right now.
Often, such people are not heartless or uncaring -- I think they
simply don't have courage to address something that brings them
in touch with their own mortality.
Or they feel they might not be able to provide adequate comfort to you.
Perhaps you could reach out to some of them -- even though you're hurt
by their avoidance -- and let them know that you need them.
You might be surprised that there are some who really want to
be there for you but simply don't know how...

May you be surrounded by love and warmth right now.
One day, I hope you will be able to embrace that you were given
a short-lived but precious gift, and may you remember only the
happiness his life brought to you.

What a precious gift sent from Heaven, lent to you just for a while...

Dear Amy,
My heart aches for you and your loss.
As it has been said "No one should ever experience the death of
their own child"...
I too lost a son after having him with us for 13 months.
Like you, Amy, I was blown away by the support of friends..
It just blew me away that people can be so loving.

Let me encourage anyone of you who knows someone who
has lost a loved one, to take note of the date and make
contact with your loved one on the anniversary of the
death of the person's loved one. We still remember
but our friends and even relatives tend to forget
over the years

This is not to say that I am still mourning the death
of my son, some 15 years later,...NO NO...in fact I
can now see his passing as a grand blessing.

I pray that you too Amy will soon come to see that
you are very special and the loss of your son will
someday bring sweet memories to your mind.

I will continue to keep you and your family in
my prayers.

Kindly,
Laura b.

Subject: NN: Hello,
   Date: Thu, 29 Nov 2001 00:15:30 -0000
   From: "Dean Akrill" (dakrill@fish.co.uk>

Hello!
I'm new to Nanci Net, so I thought I'd better introduce myself.
Actually, that's not strictly true, I was briefly a member back in 1995
when I was a student, but leaving the security of the University
computer rooms meant that I had to become Nanci-less until I had enough
dough to cough up for a PC.

That's probably the most boring introduction ever, sorry, anyway, it's
good to be back!

So, what about me? Well, the most important details first;
my favourite Album of Nanci's is "Flyer" , this is probably because I
bought it on the strength of hearing the title track on the radio. I'd
never heard any of her music before.

What drew me into the music was Nanci's voice, she seemed so
sophisticated, and yet so vulnerable, my heart melted. I still think
that the "Flyer" recording contains Nanci's finest vocal performance on
disk, but I suppose I'm biased. "Flyer" also coincided with a few
painful truths which became apparent concerning my own life at the time,
the songs spoke to me in a way I cannot explain, the sign of a true
artist, I guess. Since then I've come to appreciate Nanci's more
"rootsy" material, which has inspired my own songwriting, although I'm
nowhere near as good (self evident, I suppose, otherwise there would be
a "Dean Net").

On a more general note, I'm single at the moment, in my early 30's, and
I'm a very Liberal Minister in the Church of England.
My other favourite artists include Emmylou Harris, Bruce Cockburn,
Martyn Joseph, Nick Drake, U2, Miles Davis, Gershwin, Ryan Adams, and I
could go on, but I won't, because Nanci is top of the pile! I look
forward to discussing beautiful songs by a beautiful lady.

Love, Peace, and Flowers,
Dean.
