I have posted the results of the "best of" lists every year at:
http://nanci-griffith.com/nanci_links/TopTens/index.html
and can do the same this year, as well, if you like.

Happy Holidays to all,

Hey, I could probably cobble together a tape of Smokey Dawson doing 'Advance
Australia Fair', 'Waltzing Matilda' and bung 'Cunnamulla Fella' on the end.
I promise to keep it over here - unless there is anyone that enjoys punishment
(lol).

Having just received the digest full of "Best" lists, I guess I'll jump in
here, too. (Some of you have already seen this list elsewhere).

Richard's picks - Best CDs of 2001:

1 new non-fiction - Susan Werner
1 Every Single Day - Lucy Kaplansky
3 First Sessions (EP) - Norah Jones**

7 Barricades & Brickwalls - Kasey Chambers
8 Fan Dance - Sam Phillips
9 Whole New You - Shawn Colvin
10 Time* Sex* Love* - Mary Chapin Carpenter

Runners up (alphabetically):
Avalon Blues(songs of Mississippi John Hurt) - various
Drum Hat Buddha - Dave Carter & Tracy Grammer

Down from the Mountain (Ryman 5-24-00) - Hartford, Krauss, Welch, etc.
A Man Under the Influence - Alejandro Escovedo
Twilight - Caroline Herring
Birds - Jenifer Jackson

American Roots Music (2) various (4 hour PBS series)

Honorable mention DVD:
Steady Pull - Jonatha Brooke

I hope that this full featured DVD (both audio-DVD and video DVD on one
disc) will act as an example to be copied and expanded upon. Jonatha
includes a video for each song, as well as interview chat, and other
extras. A good idea!

Most eagerly anticipated CD of 2002:

Norah Jones full-disc debut. I don't know the title yet, but it is
expected sometime in February 2002, on Blue Note. Norah is going to be a
star! **(The entire 1 hour, 42 minute "Idiot's Delight" interview, with
Vin Scelsa, plus a high quality 'live' video [done at the Fillmore in
October], and a few mp3s, are all available at
http://www.norahjones.com/ ).

Happy Holidays to you all!

~Richard Hill

// I believe that Richard's #1 pick, the Susan Werner release,

I've been a member of this list for years and rarely submit anything to it
but i want you all to know how much i appreciate the thoughtful ramblings
and the great tips for finding music i would other wise not have ever heard
of, it's been such a crazy year on so many fronts that reading the lists
is comforting place to retreat to so i hope it keeps going for a long long
time and wish you all the warmest of holidays,

Dave Carter and Tracy Grammar's "Drum Hat Buddha." ((

Yes. Get it. I think it's absolutely as good as Tanglewood Tree,
maybe better. Mostly just different songs that as also amazing. And
Tracy sings a bit more, which is always good. And yes, they are
great live.

Dave's song, "When I Go" from their first CD (before Tanglewood Tree)
is a beautiful one about death. I would choose that one.

Hello All,

Well this was the toughest year of picking 10 that I can remember.
What a great problem to have! Too much good music to choose from.
At any rate, the top 10 are as follows:

   1.Kate Campbell - Wandering Strange
2.Rodney Crowell - The Houston Kid
   3.Lucinda Williams - Essence
4.Lori McKenna - Pieces of Me
5.Dave Carter & Tracey Grammer - Drum Hat Buddha
   6.Kasey Chambers - Barricades & Brickwalls
   7.Mark Erelli - Compass & Companion
   8.Les Sampou - Borrowed & Blue
9.John Gorka - The Company You Keep
10.Buddy and Julie Miller - Buddie and Julie Miller

New Artist of the Year: Deb Talan - Sincerely

Even though Deb Talan has had at least two other releases prior to Sincerely,
she shows up on WUMB's list of new artist of the year possibilities. As such,
I thought this was a way I could sneak in 11 instead of 10.

Others that I found very difficult to leave off this list (in no particular
order) are as follows:

Ani DiFranco - Revelling and Reckoning
     Kate Rusby - Lights
Gillean Welch - Time (The Revelator)
Keb Mo - Big Wide Grin
     Eddie from Ohio - Quick
     Dolly Parton - Little Sparrow
Mary Chapin Carpenter - Time Sex Love
Shawn Colvin - Whole New You
John Hiatt - The Tiki Bar is Open
     Patty Loveless - Mountain Soul

I also tend to stay away from various artists CDs if possible. However,
there were several from this year that I thought were excellent, but I chose
to leave them off of my top ten list. They included Concerts for a
Landmines Free World, Poet - a tribute to Townes Van Zandt, Avalon Blues,
a tribute to the music of Mississippi John Hurt, A Nod to Bob and Songcatcher.

What a great year for music!

This is the first year ever I've bought enough cds to make a top ten...
er, eight, or possibly six, list... Anyway, here they are:

1. Mary Chapin Carpenter - Time*Sex*Love
I was not a big MCC fan until I got this cd. I expected a party girl and
  discovered a poet.
2. Stacey Earle and Mark Stuart - Must Be Live
These two just get better, and their live show is simply not to be missed.
3. Nanci Griffith - Clock Without Hands
Lead on, Nanci. Where you go, I follow.
4. Kasey Chambers - Barricade and Brickwalls
  No sophomore slump here.
5. Jennifer Warnes - The Well
Worth the 10 year wait. But ma'am, respectfully, please write faster!
6. Lucinda Williams - Essence
Not as great as Car Wheels, but then again, what is?
7. Hedwig and the Angry Inch soundtrack
Great music from an awesome movie.

Peace and harmony to you all,

Good Christmas Eve everyone -

Now that things are starting to settle down, and the hustle and bustle of
preparation is pretty much over, we'd like to take just a minute to send
holiday wishes to all our friends. We've darkened the house, lit the tree
and a few candles, and the guys are sitting in a circle, quietly composing
new music. Tonight, every note from their guitars seems to have just a hint
of the flavor of gingerbread. May the holiday season fill your soul with
new hope, the love of friends, and the comfort of peace.

Merry Christmas from The Kimbros & Mountain Soul

   From: PRobin5478@aol.com

In the spirit of Xmas, I am announcing The Nanci Griffith "The Ark - 1985"
Weed.

I don't think we've done a "weed" here before, so here goes ....

A weed is a way to distribute music. I will send the first three respondents
FREE - no B&P, no trade - a wonderful 2CD set of Nanci's performance at Ann
Arbor's The Ark club from December 5, 1985 (including some BBC radio
interviews and various stuff).

The only requirement is that the three respondents agree to offer the show
 - FREE - to other list members who, in turn, will offer the show to other
list members. And on and on.

If you love Nanci, especially OLD Nanci, you will want this show.
The sound is excellent and the songs in the set are things like
Daddy Said, Goin' Gone, Mary and Omie, Ballad of Robin Winter-Smith,
Heart of a Miner, etc.

Good luck and let's keep spreading the music,
Peter Robinson

I have the three first "weeders" for this Nanci/Ark weed.

Look for them to offer it back to the list in a couple of weeks.
