This happens to have been a good year for releases for me so I could probably
come up with nearly 10 2001 releases. Often, though, I, find things that I
enjoy a great deal and they certainly make my top ten for that year. So when I
post my list to the NN I might just break those rules and include stuff that I
liked, whenever it was released, that I found this year in the belief that
people might like to hear what I thought was good, regardless of when record
labels release things by a few months here and there. See? I'm a rebel, me.

As for wedding songs, here's one, if it's not your first time around, that you
might like to get hold of. Bill Morrissey's Off White Dress, on his great
"Inside" album.

Just some rambles,

1. "New Favorite", Alison Krauss and Union Station
2. "Drum Hat Buddha", Dave Carter & Tracy Grammer
3. "The Houston Kid", Rodney Crowell
4. "Time*Sex*Love", Mary Chapin Carpenter
5. "Platinum", Shania Twain (Don't laugh too hard...)
6. "Down From The Mountain", (Compilation)
7. "Songcatcher", (Compilation)
8. "Ten New Songs", Leonard Cohen
9. "Essence", Lucinda Williams
10. "Clock Without Hands", Nanci Griffith

P.S. "Platinum" above is actually a DVD of Shania's
twenty-one music videos, but it was released this year
and I felt it worthy of inclusion in my list.

P.S. #2 "Clock Without Hands" seemed to be missing
something. It has a couple of good songs, but the
rest of it lacks a certain presence to which I've
become accustomed in Nanci's albums.

P.S. #3 Santa brought me a five channel sound card with
Dolby 5.1 and a set of surround sound speakers. Life
is sweet.

I'm not sure either one of these falls into the compilation
category. Both are soundtrack albums. Like the tunes from
"O Brother," most of the songs for "Songcatcher" were recorded
especially for that movie. And "Down from the Mountain" was
the film of the concert put on by the folks who contributed to
the "O Brother" soundtrack.

I'm looking for Song of Bernadette sung by women other than
Jennifer Warnes. (I've ordered the Famous Blue Raincoat CD.)

Any recommendations?

Thanks,

I would highly recommend Dianne Davidson on her 1988 album
"Breaking All the Rules"
There is also Bette Midler on her 1998 album "Bathhouse Betty,"
Deanna Kirk on her 1996 album "Mariana Trench," Anne Murray on
her album "What a Wonderful World," Christine Andreas on her
1997 album "Love Is Good," and/or Susan Osborn on her 2000
album "Journey Live." But the Dianne Davidson is the
best of the bunch, in my opinion.

Judy Collins has a really nice version on her first "Live at Wolftrap" CD.
However, I don't believe this was ever released beyond her website and I
don't think it's available anymore.

Maybe this is a bit early, but seeing's how I know that list-manager Bill
loves Top Ten lists, here's my ten New Year's resolutions... Nanci related,
of course!

1. Avoid devil-chain record stores, buy all recordings from independents.

2. Stop buying stuff from places that don't tell you the real price, like
BestBuy or Circuit City. I don't want *#$%!@+ rebates or the price after
two years of worthless dial-up access, just tell me what it costs!

3. Stay away from controversial mailing list topics. (Yeah, okay so I'll
try to avoid at least *one* controversial mailing list topic.)

4. Listen to the rest of Dust Bowl Symphony.

5. Open the spare bathroom door that I nailed shut last year, see if the
big spider is gone.

6. Don't attend any more Springer shows. (No, that wasn't me in row 8 by
the big fan, and even if it was, she deserved to be called that.)

7. Buy the same kind of computer printer I use at work, and never ever take
a cartridge home.

8. Finish memorizing the "Beers of the World" poster.

9. Collect DVDs about overweight southern sheriffs and Trans-Ams.

10. Stop doing a shot for each top-ten item I complete.

--

Some others I'm considering but not made up my mind about yet:

- Pay Kenn back for his beer I stole in 1997. (You think I'm making this
up don't you?)

- Read to the end of one of Bruce Miller's political rants.

- Stop using Reid Mitchell's name when I go in transvestite bars on Bourbon
street.

Ya'll have a happy new year!

Hmmmm...good thread, Shawn. Here are my resolutions - as of today.
Subject to change as the spirit moves me...

1. Don't let nancinetters entice me to respond to any controversial
subjects...... especially Shawn and his kind.

2. Eat less, drink less. Heck..... what am I saying? Eat more, drink
more.

3. Renew my wedding vows for the mppppftieth time. The parties
afterwards are always splendid, so are the wedding nights. And I love the
gifts.......

4. Record all of my songs dating back to 1933 or so...... one day these
may be collectors' items. Then force my CDs on everyone.

5. Wait until 11:00 am in the morning to have my first drink (that's 5:00
pm in my home country and much more appropriate).

6. Don't hide my hair under wigs -- be proud of being a blonde.

7. Read and write less, and learn to watch TV more often to fill my brain
and heart with more nonsense.

8. Exercise more..... try to walk from my front door to the car, maybe
even skip. The skateboard will be used only when I go to the mailbox.
Exercise more.... if I polish my bike more often, I may try to sit on
it again one day.

9. Keep trusting people, no matter how many times they betray me. It's
their damn' kharma ........

10.. Clean out the attic once and for all....... nah, maybe just
inventory and label everything this year so we know what to throw out or
keep next year.

11. Come out of the closet.

I wish you all a happy and fulfilling New Year!

Shawn considers resolving:

(( Read to the end of one of Bruce Miller's political rants. >>

Actually, I'm giving up political rants for 2002.

I'm going to concentrate instead on looking for parallels between Nanci
Griffith lyrics and suras in the Koran and/or the teachings of medieval
Kabbalistic theologians.

Of course, to do it right, I guess I'd have to learn Arabic and Hebrew. So
I'll get back to you on that.

Maybe I'll start out instead looking for parallels between Barbara Mandrell and
Shania Twain.

Howdy.

I don't know if any of y'all have seen this news, but Nanci's first
three albums are being re-released by Philo/Rounder Records with
24-bit remastered sound. THERE'S A LIGHT BEYOND THESE WOODS, POET IN
MY WINDOW and ONCE IN A VERY BLUE MOON are the CDs that will be
coming out on January 8, 2002.

The best news is that a previously-unreleased bonus track is being
included on POET IN MY WINDOW. It's called "Can't Love Wrong."

These CDs accompany the already-released LAST OF THE TRUE BELIEVERS,
which came out earlier this year as a DVD-Audio disc (24-bit
remastering, 96 kHz sampling). I'm curious as to why Rounder would
re-issue the first three themselves, but have BELIEVERS issued by a
different company (Classic Records)...

LOTTB was probably licensed out as a one shot deal for the DVD audio
treatment much as many albums used to come out on the now defunct Mobile
Fidelity Sound Labs (MFSL) label. Chances are that it will probably be
reissued at some point by Rounder as well.

Be aware that the new Rounder 24 bit remasterings should sound better than
the old 16 bit recordings.... but not all remasterings do (based on sound
sources and choices made by the remastering engineers).

The 24 bit Rounder remasterings will not be able to sound as good as the
LOTTB DVD disc because we can choose to actually playback our DVDs at the 96
khz sampling rate and audio cds use only a 44 khz sampling rate. The DVD
audio sounds much "warmer and open" and more akin to an audiophile analog
pressing on a nice system. I'm certainly not ready to reinvest in a new
format with my entire 1500+ CD collection but if they continue to reissue
Nanci's stuff in the DVD audio format I'll open my wallet!

Have just returned to www.nancigriffith.com for the first time since early
in its existence.

This site is still poorly designed!

The window that is used for most of the site cannot be maximized and, as a
result, must be scrolled more to get through the information.

This site contributes to my RSI or OSI or whatever the current acronym is
for clicking on a mouse so often that it injures the muscles in your hand
and wrist!

It is only after you have a *second* window open that you have access to the
rest of the site.

On the "Tour" page, the "info" links don't work.

On a positive note, the artwork and pictures are great! For that matter, I
loved the leaf motif of the first version of the site.

I still love the pictures of Nanci as a demure Stratocaster player. I
treasure the t-shirt I have with a similar picture.

The picture at the end of the second row makes Nanci look more like
Emmylou's sister than ever. This is a compliment to one of them, though I'm
not sure which of them would take it as a compliment. I say the compliment
is to both of them.

And the picture of Nanci in the blue/green dress with the blue scarf,
sitting down with her hand against her chin is simply beautiful.

As far as I'm concerned, they should keep the current artist and get a new
web designer.

If anyone is in a position to forward this to Gold Mountain, please feel
free to do so. I didn't see any links to communicate with the "webmaster".
