Nanci gave us a little insight. When she is performing with the BMO ...said
that folks often yell out the names of songs they want to hear. But she will
only perform this song when playing with James Hooker comes down
to........Finesse. There's a light beyond these woods..
Nanci shared her emotions with us on this song. Tears
in her eyes. She sang from her heart. A real
tear-jerker. I did not have a chance.
Tears streaming down from the very first word. The emotion that I
felt was unlike any I had ever experienced. Nanci has
been blessed. She can and does bring people to tears
through the gift of her music.(tears of joy).
Ever been so happy that you cry? Has beauty ever
caused you to weep? There's a light beyond these
woods mary margaret. ...... I like that...jimmy

Although these three have probably spent countless evenings together, this
sounds like the New Year's Eve from whence "Other Voices, Other Rooms" was
born. She's talked about a New Year's conversation they had about all the
great songwriters being in relative obscurity for the young folks -- and
the need for their songs to be sung again.

A friend of mine just got turned on to Nanci's first OVOR video.
Unfortunately, it is hard to find now. Most of the major retail suppliers are
saying "out of stock" or "out of print." The few successes my friend had in
purchasing "recent" new copies were disappointing. The color was poor and
faded or the tape was defective and he had to return them. Does anyone have
any ideas?
Thanks.

I just had the same problem after referring a friend to OVOR. Amazon, BN,
CDNOW, etc. were out of stock.
With a little digging (kudos to www.gomez.com for the ideas on where to
shop), I found a copy at Borders Online.
Two thumbs up on this video, especially Tecumseh Valley...

James Wolf writes:
"Several times during her set Nanci looked at me and saw the
tears in my eyes, running down my cheeks, I had to look
away. Looked up again and she smiled at me. said, It's ok to
cry , without saying a word.. "
Several years ago while seeing Nanci at the Majestic Theater in Dallas, at
the end of the show she walked up to the edge of the stage and stuck her
right arm out. Being the overly-polite crowd that we apparently were, she
had to pull it back in and stick it out again with more emphasis before
someone finally jumped up and shook her hand. Well, I don't need to be
asked twice - I hurried on up to the stage and stuck *my* right arm out. I
got to shake Nanci's hand. Then I thought about all the endless hours of
happiness (with a big et cetera) she has provided me (not to mention pride
in my state - Texas). It's enough to make a grown woman cry! Music is a
daily event in my life, as I'm sure it is in everyone's who reads this, and
Nanci's is most dear to me. I'm not strange or fanatical about it, she's
just cooler than (Can I curse? No? Okay, then) cow patties! But, the main
thing is she's fun to sing with. Lord, I hope she comes to Dallas soon...

I can identify with this sentiment Holly. Nanci did the same thing at a
concert I attended too (my second, for Blue Roses) of course being right in
the front row did wonders for my hand shaking accessibility and eye contact
:) And then of course, when I got to meet her for real a few years later in
Austin, it was all I could do to not hug the woman to pieces. :) Me telling
her she was a reason to breathe was probably cheesy and scary enough!
Nanci can frequently make me cry- as I tend to listen to her the most when
I'm already distraught about one thing or another. But I always feel the
better for it after, which is good I guess as it means I'm purging my fears.
:) A particular soft spot song right now is "Is this All There Is" which
always reminds me of a good friend I can't talk to anylonger.
Nanci just gets under ones skin! (and into ones heart)

From: Steve Robertson (stever@mindspring.com>
I ran across a new web site yesterday that deals exclusively with Americana
music. You couldn't tell it from the name- Pure Spunk- but this web site
(owned and operated by Radney Foster and his wife, Cyndi Hoelzle) has some
of the highest quality original content on the web.
Cyndi has been writing for music business publications for many years.
Between her and Radney, they know who to see and what to ask. There's not a
whole lot of quantity, but there's lots of quality. And Radney is one of a
handful of mainstream country artists who deserve a lot of credit for their
support of the Americana format.
I can't say much for their "Song of the Month" club, though. You pay them
$25 a year, and you get to download one song each month that is chosen by
them, and exclusive to them.

Hi everyone. It's been awile since I posted and since I met many of you
in Atlanta at the Red Light Cafe. (I still think of Vince Bell & the
Kimbro's from time to time-awsome music). I wanted to share an excert
from an e-mail with you guys telling about the Sundilla music series
line up. The concerts are held in Auburn Alabama and as you'll see from
the line up they have, it's truly something else. Eric Taylor is
scheduled next month and Kate Campball in the fall. There is also some
info included for you guys who are looking for a place to perform (you
know who you are). Auburn is only a 2.5 hour drive from Atlanta and
with these folks, well worth it. I believe that Steve Robinson has been
in touch with the Sundilla folks also. So if you live in the South
east, or close by, this may interest you.
>We do seem to be working on that. Lately our crowds have been magnificent

From: John Padilla (chemmixer@yahoo.com>
This is my first time jumping in on the NN so here
goes. Nanci's performance and beauty could not have
been more elegant, entertaining or poetic. I give
credit to Mr. Clark and Mr. Crowell but by far the
shining moments of the whole festival were of Nanci,
especially her performance of "This Part of You".
Nanci went into this song with a bit of info on the
VVAF and the land mine issue, then she gave what I
personally feel was an extremely heartfelt thank you
to all veterans...of which I am a former Marine...this
brought tears to my eyes. Now, I have had my share of
problems with the VA and the government, but this
sincere acknowledgment of the life we veterans give to
this country solidly made me cry. She then started
the song, which kept me crying. My friend, sitting
next to me, kept looking back and forth between Nanci
and me with total amazement. (he wasn't the only one
most of the people sitting around me did too.)
Needless to say after this concert I felt some
pressures relieved. Now, if this doesn't show the
power of Nanci as an artist, I don't know what else
would. My reasons for being a fan of Nanci have
doubled.
Anyway, God bless you all.

Should love to listen, but there are two problems: BBC 2 is not on the
cable, that is a real problem we have BBC 4 and some chineese stations??
And the other reason is the Blue Highways Festival in Utrecht with: Buddy &
Julie Miller, Dave Alvin, David Olney, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Mary Gauthier
and a lot more. I think a good excuse for not listening.......

For the astronomer's take on this stunning image here is a small
blurb that i had on the website of the Amateur Astronomers
Association of Pittsburgh (http://www.3ap.org) accompanying a portion
of this image.
>>>>>>>>>>>>
If you think that light pollution isn't a real problem, then you
haven't been paying attention. This is a mosaic of real satellite
images of North America at night. Every photon recorded in this
image, every ounce of coal or oil burned to generate the electricity
to create it, was wasted; and worse yet, went towards obliterating
the view of the nighttime sky that we humans have studied, wondered
at, and cherished as part of our heritage for millennia. From the
earliest farmers that relied on the appearance of certain stars to
tell them when to plant and when to harvest, to the mechanical,
global society that relies on standardized time to run smoothly, to
the dreamers that are inspired to reach beyond our present knowledge
and understanding by the beckoning of the distant galaxies; the
nighttime sky is a part of who we are as humans.
The photons that went into making this image are just a fraction of
the photons that were released, many were reflected by particles in
the atmosphere, bouncing around to increase the general brightness of
the sky. Where once a person with normal vision could see perhaps
2,500 stars in the sky at once, the sky from a city or suburban area
is now brighter than most of those stars making them invisible. The
grandeur that the shear number of stars visible created is lost.
However, unlike so many other natural resources that have been
irrevocably corrupted or consumed by the progress of modern
technology, the nighttime sky is one that can be recovered. It is
still there waiting for us, we only need to eliminate the ignorance
of those who design buildings, roads, bridges, and "corporate
identities" to the consequences of poorly designed and wasteful
lighting. What is ultimately more important, to have the
corporations that locate their headquarters in our cities continually
reminding us of the fact with garish logos, or to pass onto to the
next generation and the generations to follow, the human heritage
that every one of us shares?
Please take the time to learn more about light pollution and what you
can do to help http://www.3ap.org/lightPollution.shtml.

Sorry for the soap box speech.
BTW at the monthly meeting of the AAAP last night, our guest speaker
pointed out that the word "amateur" comes from the Latin "to love".
Therefore an amateur is not someone who knows less than a
professional, or does second-rate work, it is someone who pursues a
subject because of love for it not capital gain. So how many of us
are "amateur" Nanci Griffith fans?

Griffith Tapped For D.C. Irish Celebration
Singer/songwriter Nanci Griffith has been invited to perform at the annual
Speaker's Irish Luncheon in Washington, D.C., at the invitation of House
Speaker J. Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.). Set for Thursday (March 15), the
traditional event to honor the Prime Minister Of Ireland will be attended
by Ireland's Prime Minister Bertie Ahern and President George W. Bush, plus
other national leaders.
"I am looking forward to not only meeting Nanci, but also hearing her
perform her music," Hastert said in a statement. "On a day when we
celebrate the proud tradition of the Irish, it will be my pleasure to
introduce one of our own American singer/songwriters who has strong ties to
Ireland. I am sure that President Bush and Prime Minister Ahern will
thoroughly enjoy her music."
Austin, Texas-native Griffith has in her career earned two Grammy Awards
for her performances with celebrated Irish group the Chieftains, and one
for her 1992 album "Other Voices."
Griffith's next album, "Clock Without Hands," is due in August. It's the
follow-up to 1999's "Dust Bowl Symphony" (Elektra), a collection of her
songs recorded with the London Symphony Orchestra. Her last studio album,
1997's "Blue Roses From The Moons" debuted at No. 119 on The Billboard 200.

You really have to wonder what Nanci will say to the President.....

There's probably a good chance it will make one of the C-Span channels,

I hope Nanci does get to speak to "President" Bush.
I found the article amusing, Nanci's not just a bit liberal but hardly
passes up a chance to specifically name the Republican party as a foe of
hers. ("Remember, friends don't let friends drive republican", one of my
