It looks like Nanci will be back in the UK and Ireland, in October and
November. Tom Russell's website lists a lot of shows where he (and Andrew
Hardin) will be opening for her. I don't know if the dates listed there
make up Nanci's whole tour, or if there are any others where Tom won't be
opening. In any case, the dates and venues can be found at:

Hi all. I've been reading with interest the discussion about Nanci's
performance at the Speaker's lunch with President Bush and Prime Minister
Ahren last week. As a Hill staffer, I thought I'd do a little checking to
find out what happened. This lunch is an annual event for members only, and
by invitation only. To give you an idea of how tough a ticket it was to
come by, my boss, a 5th term Democrat from upstate NY and a very active
member of the Congressional Irish American Caucus, wasn't invited.

A direct quote from my friend in the Speaker's office (and probably the only
staffer in the room) who organized the lunch:

"Nanci did a great job, although she was a bit nervous and had to leave the
room before the President arrived at the reception. She did a great job
of singing and of the past 6 years of putting this together, I think it was
the first that the room was hushed during the performance. She gave the
Speaker a copy of her new CD - you would like it."

I think it's safe to say that she did not use the occasion to blast the
Republicans. But to answer the questions that I'm sure this post will
provoke: I am still trying to (a) get a set list, (b) see if she wore her
LBJ button, and (c) find out if the CD is Clock Without Hands or Dustbowl
Symphony.

And with that, I'm late for my next meeting...

 NANCI GRIFFITH GOES TO WASHINGTON

This past Thursday, March 15, Nanci Griffith accomplished something the
American people have been trying to do for over 200 years -- she got a roomful
of Washington's biggest political figures to stop talking and just listen, as
she performed at the annual St. Patrick's Day luncheon hosted by House Speaker
Dennis Hastert R-IL).

Said Speaker Hastert before the event, "I am looking forward not only to
meeting Nanci, but also to hearing her perform her music. On a day when we
celebrate the proud tradition of the Irish, it will be my pleasure to introduce
one of our own American singer/songwriters who has strong ties to Ireland." The
luncheon is a tradition started twenty years ago by then-Speaker Thomas "Tip"
O'Neill and President Ronald Reagan, to honor the Prime Minister of Ireland.

In attendance at this exclusive social (i.e., non-political) event were
President George W. Bush, Prime Minister Bertie Ahern of Ireland, Secretary of
State Colin Powell, the Majority Leaders from the House and Senate, First
Minister of Norther Ireland Gerry Adams, several members of the Irish
Parliament and too many other luminaries to name.

Nanci, accompanied by her longtime keyboardist James Hooker, brought the
luncheon audience to a hush for the first time in recent memory, according to
one Hastert staffer. She performed four of her best-loved songs -- "On Grafton
Street," "Gulf Coast Highway," "It's A Hard Life Wherever You Go," and "From A
Distance"-- and spent some time afterwards chatting offstage with the assembled
about all manner of topics, including her recent humanitarian work with the
Campaign For A Landmine-Free World.

   From: John Jobling (john.jobling@virgin.net>

While browsing the Tom Russell Website I noticed that he has announced
some tour dates in October where he is opening for Nanci Griffith. It
looks like an extensive tour playing some quite initimate venues. For
example Newcastle Opera House is a small old style theatre. (Date for
Newcastle is 20th October.)

If this has been posted already, and I am just behind the times I
apologise!

Just a few words of encouragement to see Kasey Chambers as she
concludes her Western United States tour this week (including San Francisco,
Santa Cruz, Portland, and Seattle). Kasey gave a very entertaining show
Tuesday night at the Roxy in West Hollywood on the Sunset Strip. I'd
recommend positioning yourself audience-left/stage-right to view Kasey's
father work an assortment of slide, dobro, electric, and acoustic guitars.

After an 80 minute-set, including Lucinda Williams' "I Changed the
Locks", Kasey started the encore with a solo-voice, acoustic-guitar
rendition of what she introduced as "her favorite song". I expected a
Lucinda treasure, but instead was rewarded with the Iris Dement jewel of "No
Time to Cry", all 3 verses with all 3 choruses.

Very good show, including songs from both "The Captain" and a new
album-in-the-studio.

Further to Paul's message, I don't remember if I mentioned to this list
already that Kasey recently made a stop (on her tour) at one of the morning
shows (can't remember which one), and the cameras highlighted Kasey's dad
frequently at that performance. I also can't remember what song she sang.
I do remember that my teenage daughter was fascinated by her (there's
HOPE!!!!!!!!)

   From: "The Kimbros" (kimbroj@charter.net>

Hi folks --

If you've been on this list for a while you know that my buddy Curt and I
host an annual July 4th cookout/picking party in the shadow of Clinch
Mountain in East Tennessee. We've been honored by the presence of several
list members in the past so we wanted to get an early start in mentioning
this year's activities in hopes that more list friends might plan to attend.
We've decided to do it up right this time so everyone can participate. The
2001 4th of July bash will be at Barley's Tap Room and Pizzeria in
Knoxville's Old City. Radio station WDVX will broadcast the party live as a
part of the "Barley's Behind The Barn Performance Series"
(http://www.wdvx.com/programs/Behindthebarn.html). There will also be a
webcast at http://www.wdvx.com so the entire world can listen in. We'll
start off with an afternoon jam session/BBQ near Beans Station TN, then move
to Barley's about 9:00 P.M. for a live performance of Mountain Soul with
special guests. Jeff Barbra & Sara Pirkle regularly host the show
(http://www.jeffandsarahonline.com). They'll kick it off, then we'll do two
hour long sets. I absolutely guarantee a great time for everyone attending.
Please contact me at this address if you need further information,
directions, etc. We'll post more details when we get closer to Independence
Day.

Warm Regards,
-Shawn

   From: Steve Robertson (stever@mindspring.com>

There's another old-time music movie and soundtrack on the way called
"Songcatcher". It's about a female music scholar who travels to Appalachia
to study the roots of American music. The soundtrack features Emmylou,
Dolly, Iris, Gillian, Julie Miller, and many more.

I heard about this a while back, and I think the earlier report said the
movie was from Tri-Star. I couldn't find much about the movie on the Web-
other than the fact that it won an award at the 2000 Sundance Festival. It
seems like, if these film makers had any sense, they would do whatever is
necessary to get this movie out while Oh Brother is still on the minds of
moviegoers.

Apparently, the soundtrack will be available soon. Here's a story from
Rolling Stone:

I just read where there was a "platform release" (don't know what that is
exactly) in December with a "limited release" scheduled for June 2001. This is
from Trimark Pictures.

There is a trailer available for viewing at:

www.beckerentertainment.com.au/film/songcatcher/

Quality of the trailer is just so-so, even with cable modem,
but you do get to see and hear Iris Dement.

Wow! Great trailer. I can't wait to see this movie. But you have to pay
close attention to see Iris. It looks like she has a part in the movie.

Actually, it's probably not the film's actual makers but the studio who
picked it up.
Or, if it was even picked up to begin with. If it was at Sundance, chances
are it's an independent outfit and and the film makers are probably looking
at a very small distribution area. That said, the fact that they do have all
those people on the soundtrack is a good sign, and who knows- it may be
released eventually. :)

Actually, I hate it when movies with similar themes or ideas are released at
the same time. Reminds me of how un-original hollywood is. :)
