From: Scaryxxx@aol.com
I made the trip March 30th to DC to see nanci with the national symphony
Orchestra. I was was waiting with great anticipation for this concert since
the Kennedy Center is the home base for this symphony. I had seen Nanci with
this very same symphony at an out door venue last summer and though it was
very good, the symphony just didn't pack much punch outside, well
unfortunately they didn't pack much punch inside either. I don't know if it
was the sparse arrangements or just the lack of amplification that just left
the sound flat. Nanci sounded great and did the usual set list for this
tour, the banter was a little to familiar but I guess that happens when you
see somebody three times in a short time period. I don't mean to sound too
disappointed in this concert because parts of it were truly wonderful, the
energy from the stage was very good all were in good sprits Nanci "s voice
was crystal clear and very strong,"but" the band and orchestra were so far
back in the mix that it was a struggle to hear solos and individual
instruments,,,,,but after all of that Wing and a Wheel was worth the three
hour drive and the heart stopping driving that is DC. gary

Hi Everybody,
My name is Lucy and I'm new to the Nanci Net, really enjoying it so far. I
too went to see Nanci at the Kennedy Center March 30th, a date eagerly
anticipated since last October when I bought the tickets. I was lucky enough
to get second row seats and the people in the front never came so we slid
forward and had the chance of a lifetime for me to see Nanci front and
center. I agree that the rest of the musicians were drowned out and my
husband and I both felt James Hooker was barely heard from. The sound of
Nanci's incredible voice right down in front was absolutely fantastic, she is
so strong and clear.
As if that weren't good enough, I was lucky enough to be allowed backstage
after the show and talked to Nanci for a few minutes, who was so incredibly
gracious that she didn't make me feel like an idiot as I stood in front of
her with my jaw open. She said she is going to Vietnam again in May or June
and would not be playing Wolf Trap here this summer which is disappointing to
us.
The Washington Post Critic slammed the show and said the symphony was
distracting from her folk message. I still enjoyed it immensely.

Nanci was radiant, luminous and all those other appropriate adjectives
performing before a large crowd at the Peace Center concert hall, an
excellent venue, April 7 in Greenville, S.C.
In yet another spin on the Dust Bowl floor, Nanci and the BMO were backed
by the Greenville Symphony Orchestra, and they performed a set list that has
become familiar on these occasions: Trouble in the Fields, Love at the Five
and Dime, Nobody's Angel, It's a Hard Life, etc.
Nanci pointed out that James Hooker's parents and piano teacher were in
the crowd (Hooker is a South Carolina native) and playfully chided him about
proving to his teacher that he could play and sing at the same time (which he
did quite well, to no one's surprise, on Gulf Coast Highway).
Nanci sang her tribute to Vietnam veterans, Traveling Through This Part
of You, and said that the new CD that will include the song will be out in
late July.
Fashion report: black dress with long sheer sleeves, black boots, LBJ
button. And the best news - the long hair is back.
Just an opinion - having seen Nanci and the BMO twice with orchestras
(and they have done a wonderful job), I'm ready for some pure Texas with just
Nanci and the band.

From: "The Kimbros" (kimbroj@charter.net>
Hey --
I caught a few minutes of the WWHP KateKast today between appointments.
Thanks Kenn, Richard, and everyone for keeping us posted about when Kate
Campbell's performing on the radio. I really think she's at the top of her
craft right now. But then again, I thought that a year ago and she keeps
getting better! I also wanted to take just a minute to invite everyone to
Hot Springs, NC in a couple of weeks. I know there are a lot of hikers out
there. TRAILFEST is a music-filled celebration of hiking and the Appalachian
Trail that is planned so that thru-hikers who've started the trek down at
Springer Mtn will arrive in Hot Springs just in time to meet family and
friends at the event on April 21st. The organizers say this year will be
bigger and better than ever and include lots of food, trail crafts, displays
of the latest hiking gear, and plenty of music. There will be campfires on
Friday and Saturday night and everyone is invited to bring their instruments
and share their songs. Featured artists include Jeff Barbra & Sarah Pirkle,
our band Mountain Soul and others. Saturday night there will also be a slide
presentation by thru-hikers documenting past experiences on the trail.
There are still campsites available. Please help spread the word about
TRAILFEST. More information is available at
http://hotspringsnc.org/trailfest. We'll meet you in Hot Springs!

Here is a link to some bluebonnet pictures in front of the capital in case
someone is still looking. If you go to the main site there are links to a
tremendous amount of information including lots of great pictures. Be sure to
click on the flamingo picture to see the flock. Follow the link to see more
pictures, including me in 9.jpg. I'm the one on the left. This is a web site
from the Horticulture Dept. at Texas A&M University where I work. And yes,
Nanci did play in College Station in the early 80's. Wish she would come
back. Also, Lyle Lovett and Robert Earl Keen went to school here. It ain't
Austin but it ain't bad.

Hi folks: Wendy and I are excited because Kate Campbell will be at
Club Passim in Cambridge, Mass. on April 28 and we plan to see her. We
hope to see some Nancinetters there. She was absolutely marvelous in
Atlanta. I did get Nanci's Milennium Album and it has some great notes
on Nanci as well as pictures of her and the sound does seem better to
me than the originals, but I am no expert in that area. I do wait with
enthusiasm for her new album. I know that her covers of John Stewart
songs are terrific, John himself wrote about that in Bloodlines. I am
also in dire need of some new Nanci songs. Finally, I have always loved
Eliza's music and am so pleased that Nancinetters are being turned on
to her marvelous music. She is right up there in my listing of all time
great singers and songwriters: Nanci Griffith, Kate Campbell, John
Stewart, Susan Werner and Eliza. They write songs that are poetic
masterpieces and they actually sound good. Best wishes, Jim Troiano

From: "Mike Barrett" (mikebarrettuk@hotmail.com>
There's a "sort of" full concert by Nanci on Napster at the moment, recorded
October 26, 1985 in Canton, CT. I say "sort of" because while all the songs
are there (24 of them), most of the introductions unfortunately seem to have
been cut out. Oh for the full version......
Quality is not brilliant, but acceptable - better than a lot of live
recordings I've got! - and there's a fine selection of songs, mainly from
OIAVBM and LOTTB plus a few others like the wonderful "Roll You Colorado"
(why didn't that ever make it to an album?)
But the most notable thing for me is the inclusion of a song I've never
heard before - track 23. Nice song, and the audience join in on the chorus
which goes -
"And ooee, ain't the morning like this,
When the dew is still heavy,
So bright and early,
On my home on the range.
It's a one horse town and it's allright with me"
Nice imagery throughout - "the little towns blossomed and soon there were
many, scattered like fireflies across the dark earth." I don't know the
title - the intro is missing - but does anyone know the song? It sounds as
if it could possibly be a John Prine composition, but that's just a guess on
my part.

Not yet. There is still no such place in this town. I emailed Tom Russell's
booking people (I think all these UK dates came originally from the TR
website?) and they are trying to find out. Apparently, some of the
arrangements are not finalized.

having lurked for years at this digest, I thought I'd mention a Nanci concert
whose tickets have just gone on sale. The concert is on June 2nd 2001 in North
Adams Massachusetts at MASS MOCA,an art museum. The venue is outside with a
small hall in case of rain. Box office # is 413.662.2111.
Nanci has a loyal fan base up here in the north east and tickets always seem to
go quickly. I've been to 6
or 7 of her concerts from Tanglewood to Boston Symphony Hall and no matter
where it's been, Nanci has this quality that can make me laugh one moment and
bring a tear another. I know you all know what I mean.
