I foolishly waited too long to inquire about tickets for the May concert, and
now it's sold out! Is there anyone out there with a spare one or two?
We'd be happy to relieve you of them!!!!
Kathleen W. (who can't go to the Massachusetts show, because that's the day of
the NY Liberty home opener!)

From: Jim Kipp (jim_kipp@yahoo.com>
On Sunday, Sara Huizinga wrote about the Nanci benefit
concert in Grand Rapids in May. She is correct in
everything except the date of the concert. It's
Wednesday, May 16th. My wife and I are volunteering
to work at the concert. We look forward to having
Nanci back for her second Grand Rapids performance.
First Kate Campbell and now Nanci. What a great
spring - where it feels more like winter right now!

Here's a heads up to nancinetters in the Washington, D.C. area:
Nancinetters Gordon and Donate will be performing at Mr. Henry's on Capitol
Hill this June. Once we have final dates for the gigs, we will keep you
posted in case you're interested. We would love to have y'all come out and
support us. We'll be playing many originals (mostly Gordon's), but there
should be at least one or two Nanci pieces among the covers.
Stay tuned......

Subject: NN: Buddy, Kasey & Emmylou
Date: Sun, 22 Apr 2001 17:59:07 -0400
From: Tony Cox (tonycox@pacific.net.au>
Here are a few notes on last night's fantastic evening of music in
Melbourne which I thought might interest many of you.
Buddy Miller opened the show, looking rough as guts but singing and playing
like a man inspired. Emmylou came on a few numbers into his set to
accompany him on rhythmn guitar on a rousing 'Love Match' and then harmony
vocals on a ballad. After a couple more numbers Buddy referred to the
imminent presence of Kasey Chambers on stage by saying he'd had the chance
to preview Kasey's new album which was 'incredible'.
Kasey Chambers looks more the bohemian princess every time I see her, and
her latest look is stunning to behold! She wore a long scarlet dress with
interesting bits hanging off (as they say in the trade), hair shorter and
pleated in small random sections and roughed up in an effective kind of
way, and a ring or stud below her lower lip. She looked happy and radiant,
and gave a good account of herself in her 10 song set. She performed a
song from the new album (out in July, incidentally) which she introduced as
being about "why Britney Spears gets played on radio stations all around
the world and I don't!"
After a short break, Emmylou emerged with her 3 piece back-up consisting of
Buddy and a black rhythm section (just bass and drums). Their
musicianship throughout the two hour set was sensational, and with Emmylou
exuding a powerful feminine energy through her presence and her captivating
voice it was a flawless and inspirational run-through of her catalogue old
and new. The songs from 'Red Dirt Girl' I now have far greater insight
into and respect for, and old faves like' Love Hurts' and 'Hickory Wind'
were as poignantly delivered as ever I've heard them. Interestingly, even
during these numbers it would be hard to describe the sound as 'country',
so much has she and the band carved their own unique niche in the musical
spectrum. She truly is at the peak of her form.
She obviously loved playing in the beautiful theatre she was in (for the
second night) and it brought out some arelaxed and amusing inter-song chat
throughout the evening. One thing she said which was both interesting and
alarming was that she had just had news the day before that 'Red Dirt Girl'
has 'recouped'. For the rest of the evening there followed several jokey
references to albums and artists 'recouping' (including the comment "Hope
you don't mind sitting through an artist whose albums don't always
recoup!") The thought occurs that if an album with as much profile and
acclaim as 'Red Dirt Girl' is only just now in the black, how much of a
struggle it must be for so many of the other artists we cherish in this
business.
Which is another good reason to go and see them perform whenever possible;
Emmylou in this kind of form should not be missed if the chance comes up.
Tony

The 'black rhythm' section that Tony refers to in his Emmylou review will
be the fabulous Tony Hall on bass, (he replaced Daryl Johnson last fall),
and the simply incredible Brady Blade on drums.

Howdy!
The folks at the local library book sale were giving away a couple of
clean copies of the 1964 and 65 University of Texas Yearbook, the
"Cactus". Anybody want anyone looked up in them? Were there any
Griffiths at UT in those years?
I wonder if anyone has listened to John Prine's "Paradise", or
whatever it is called, lately. I thought of that song when I heard
about our local Scout Council selling a summer camp site that was
donated to the Scouts back in the 1930s and is in pristine condition.
Seems the Council wants the money more than they do the summer camp
opportunities for the Scouts. A clear-running coldwater creek runs
behind the camp and feeds a lake nearby. The clearcutting started
today.
