(( ... having played it incessantly for three weeks, I think I can safely say
that "Time*Sex*Love", Mary Chapin Carpenter's soon to be released cd, (May 14th
in U.K./May 29th in U.S.A.) is her best work.>>

Am very much looking forward to this one. Interesting that it gets a UK
release before as US one. Is Chapin well known in England?

((I wish I could be as enthusiastic about "Essence", the new work of Lucinda
Williams. I simply adored "Car Wheels", but, admittedly after only one play,
this leaves me flat. There are some lovely touches, but the whole thing is a
little droll, all on one level and nothing stood up and hit me, or gave me
goose bumps. >>

I've been listening to "Car Wheels" quite a bit of late in anticipation of
"essence," but it dawned on my that this might not be such a good idea as it is
setting expectations almost impossibly high.

Other new releases I am looking forward to are R.E.M.'s "Reveal" and a new one
(title escapes me at the moment) from Cowboy Junkies, both due in the US on May
15th.

Roan asks if Mary Chapin is well known in England, and the answer is yes. She
regularly tours and last time around played seven sold out nights at the Lyric
Theatre in the London suburb of Hammersmith. Her records sell well, although
not in the millions they do, in the far larger, U.S. market. However, like
Nanci she retains a high profile on this side of the pond. The new cd is
obviously being released here in the U.K. first as Mary Chapin embarks on a
nationwide tour on 24th May, where Shawn Colvin is providing the support. Some
double bill for all us Brits to look forward to.

Having played "Essence" a few more times, it is starting to grow on me, and is
by no means a bad record. However, I do not think it will attain the heights
and status of "Car Wheels". There are too many sombre moments, it sounds like
lots of the writing was as a result of a romantic break-up. There are some fine
moments, primarily on "I Envy The Wind", "Out Of Touch", "Are You Down" and
"Essence". But it rarely breaks through the hushed tones of Lucinda's vocals
and lets rip. I will be sticking with it and hopefully, like the best records,
it will continue to reveal it's charms, with repeated plays.

I was browsing through a catalog of children's books and came across this and
thought I would pass it along to the NanciNet.

It is called This Land is Your Land, and is an illustrated version of Woody
Guthrie's song. It sounds beautiful. Part of the description says "the book
includes the complete lyrics of the title song, as well as its musical
notation, a biographical sketchbook and a tribute by Pete Seeger."

Thanks a lot.

First, let me say I've been lurking on the nanci digest for years, and this is
the first time I've actually posted. It's great to hear everyone else's
thoughts on Nanci.

I recently saw Nanci play with the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington,
DC. It was one of the best performances I've seen from her (my fifth).
Although I have most of her albums, and have seen her several times, I had
never heard her sing "The Road to Aberdeen" until she closed the show with it.
I thought it was magic. Since the show, I have been trying to find a copy of
"The MCA Years - The Best of Nanci Griffith" so I could have the song on CD
(Note that this is the *UK* release of the album - *not* the US version titled
"The MCA Years - A Retrospective"). I have checked all the local music and
book stores, and I have checked all the web stores I can think of - to no
avail.

Can anyone help me locate a copy of this album? Maybe some UK friends could
pick it up for me or direct me to a mail-order company that carries it? I
would appreciate it very much.

Please direct responses to josi3006@hotmail.com.

Thank you!

John,

Hopefully someone will give you a definitive answer, but for now, I'll pass
along what I've heard.

There was talk on this list about a year and a half ago (or there about) that
the "UK" version was no longer available and the US version was now being sold
worldwide. I had originally picked up my copy while in New Zealand and thought
I might have seen another copy or two in the CD stores, so I immediately
checked in several stores in Wellington and found only the US version.

Earlier this year, while on a short visit to London, I checked the Tower
Records at Piccadilly Circus and found CD versions of about a third or more of
my "high priority" old vinyl that I had not yet been able to replace. But no
"UK" version of Nanci's "Best".

Sorry to be the bearer of bad tidings. E-Bay maybe?

Hello from New Orleans.
Just back from a fabulous show by the Continental
Drifters, with a guest appearance by Syd Straw. Great
pop/garage music--if that makes sense. The Nanci
connection is the presence of Susan Cowsill as one of
the lead singers and songwriters. Vicki from the
Bangles is another front liner in the band.

I can't really tell you how much is happening here
musically during jazz fest. But check out the C.
Drifters--new cd any day now.

Hi folks: I noticed in the Electra website that Nanci was on Letterman April
25. Is that true and what did she sing? She is supposed to be on again on July
30 and sing "Where will I be". Is anyone familiar with that song? I noticed in
the Ladyslipper catalogue that there is a new album entitled Lifetime's Women
from the Heartland, which includes some great artists including Nanci and
Lucinda. Doe anyone know about it and what does Nanci sing on it? I saw Kate
Campbell in Boston on Saturday, she was superb and sang many of her favorites
songs. I was hoping to talk to her, but I could not push my way through. I was
spoiled by my experience in Atlanta where we talked for a long time. One of my
favorite songs by Kate is Crazy in Alabama which she did. I saw a film with the
same title on HBO some time ago and it dealt with segragation in the south. I
wanted to ask her if she saw it. The film is delightful, and seems to only
lack Kate's song. Boston is terrific for me -Wendy and I can make it back in
one day. That is as close as we get to seeing our favorite performers. Please
come to Boston again Nanci. See you, Jim Troiano

Just as Henry starts saying that he prefers Kate to Lucinda, a debate surely
nobody can win, and I for one would rather have two great artists to listen to,
then comes the British press giving half a page, in a broadsheet newspaper,
to..."Return to the old country".

Forget rhinestones and big hair: the top US country album is the soundtrack to
"O Brother, Where Art Thou?" Why did the music take so long to get back to
it's powerful roots.

We are then treated to a well written and researched piece on country
music and in particular bluegrass, mountain music and old time country.
It extols the virtues of artists like Emmylou Harris, Alison Krauss and
Gillian Welch, while lambasting Garth Brooks, Faith Hill and the Dixie
Chicks.

The article appeared yesterday, Wednesday 2nd May and the Independent can be
read on-line at:
     www.independent.co.uk
then I would guess you can look up the Arts section
to read this particular piece. It will be well worth the effort,
especially to all the discerning people on these lists.

I must add that I think the new/current edition of No Depression (Lucinda on
the cover) is arguably the best ever. Their review of "Pneumonia" by
Whiskeytown is absolutely spot on.

Good reading folks, and long live real music.

Ahh, don't get me started on Evangeline, Tom. Every time I see or hear the
Dixie Chicks I think about what might have been for those Louisiana women.
Great band. If only they'd gotten their version of She's a Wild One to the
radio stations before Faith Hill (they had actually recorded it first) they
might have enjoyed some of the success they deserved. Both their out-of-print
MCA releases are well worth seeking out, as is the self-produced one they put
out before Buffett signed them. GCH is good, but far from their best recording;
I really liked their original material as well.

I'm afraid that this will be not much fuller than my

New Orleans Lucinda Williams played a set at the Jazz
Fest--her first since 1981. At least half of the
material was new and she was in fine voice, for those
of us who like her voice. She started the set with
"Don't Tell Anyone the Secrets" and ended with "Joy."
Of the new (to me) songs the one that caught my
attention the most was "Bus to Baton Rouge."
Sorry to render such an incomplete account but between
the sun, the beer, the pheasant gumbo, and swarms of
people, there wasn't much chance for taking notes--I
was too busy picking a path closer to the stage,
advancing a few feet at the end of every song.

Subject: NN: Music Midtown (Atlanta) and Bluebird Artists on TV

   From: Steve Robertson (stever@mindspring.com>

More than likely, there are very few of you who get the Turner South
cable/satellite channel, but those who do can see a live segment of the
Music Midtown festival- including Shawn Colvin and the Indigo Girls- on
Saturday night, May 5, at 8PM:

http://alt.turnersouth.com/musicmidtown/1,5727,,00.html

Turner South also has an excellent weekly show called "Live from the Bluebird
Cafe"- which is not really live ;-). Next Friday, May 11, the show features Joe
Ely, Lee Roy Parnell ( who seems to be trying to move from the country category
to the Americana category) and a female musician who looked like Tish Hinojosa,
although the commercial didn't identify her. You can check this web page one
day next week to verify:

http://alt.turnersouth.com/bluebird/

Speaking of the Bluebird, there's a fairly new restaurant in Roswell, GA (just
North of Atlanta)- called Swallow at the Hollow- that has a relationship with
the Bluebird. Many of the same songwriters who perform in the round at the
Bluebird also perform at SatH. The Roswell restaurant also serves great
barbecue at good prices. This is the only barbecue restaurant I've ever seen
that puts tomato-based sauce, vinegar-based sauce, and mustard-based sauce on
the table- so you can take your choice, or try all three!
