Will someone please explain to me the logic, the reason for hidden
tracks. It's a gimmick that has become a cliche, serves no useful purpose,
can actually be detrimental to programming and should be eliminated.

Many of the artists I've talked about this say it's because the song just
doesn't fit the theme/scheme of the album but they'd like to get the song
out there for various reasons (it's gotten good response in concert; they
don't want to have to wait for the next record to put it on; it's funny and
people get tired of funny songs so they don't want to force it on folks).

So why not release the song in another way--as a CD single, for instance?
What you say makes no sense: "The song doesn't fit the theme of the
album, so I'll put it on the album and hope no one notices it's on there."
I'm not saying Ms. Krauss is not making sense; this is probably the inane
logic artists use--but it is still inane logic.

Christina asked:
"if all these radio stations have the album and all these people have
advanced copies then why the hell are us normal people- i.e.. people not
connected with a station and or media representation- waiting until
August for the thing?"

Because advanced copies are sent three months before official release date
so that radios and papers can review them and publish the review when the
album is out.

And that's why you can find advanced copies with a punch hole in the bar
code in stores...

I was wondering the same thing, so thanks for answering. I thought that
radio stations got some advance copies of a song or two that would be on the
CD, but I didn't know that entire CD's were sent out.

Just for the heck of it, I went to eBay and saw there is one of these
"advance copies" up for sale. So if you can't wait, you can try there.

In an effort to keep my 13 year old appropriately entertained this summer, I

volunteered us up at WNCW. We filed and stapled and alphabetized for hours.

My son came away with an appreciation for songs with intelligible lyrics.

The good folks at WNCW were so nice and appreciative. When they learned
that my favorites were Nanci and Kate, they gave me an advanced copy of
Clock w/o Hands-no liner notes and I had to promise not to Napster it,
etc...

It is goodness all around! I am content...

Hi folks: I called our folk/alternative station this morning and they do
have Nanci's CD. The disc jockey asked me what I wanted to hear and I gave
him three off the top of my head: Clock Without Hands (since I read the
novel), Where Will I Be, because Nanci loves it and will sing it on
Letterman, and Armstrong ( a John Stewart song from way back that Wendy
and I loved since many years ago.) The station does not come in strongly,
but Nanci sounded great. They were beautiful songs and Ms. Nanci's voice
never sounded better. I do long to get my own copies (I always buy several
copies of Nanci's music so I can have it wherever I am. I also anxiously
await seeing her on tour-so far the best bet is still the Beacon in N.Y. I
finally was able to speak to a live person at Ticketmaster and they do not
have the concert listed while Beacon has a voiced message which does not
include her Sept. 14 concert. Thanks to all the previous responses
regarding Nanci's N.Y. appearance. I am still hoping for Boston or Maine.
I need to see her at least once a year or a I grow crazier than I ever
thought I would be. See you, Jim Troiano

Hi y'all,

Reading about Ray Kennedy's contribution to Nanci's new album prompted me to
dig out my CD of Ray's album "What a Way to Go" from 1990.

I still get a lot of pleasure hearing him sing those great songs (all of
which he wrote himself) with that rich bass voice and great guitar-playing.
When I first heard "What a Way to Go" on the radio, I called in to the
station playing it, and was surprised to learn that the singer wasn't Merle
Haggard.

Anyhow, I look forward to Nanci's new album, and any tidbits that might be
forthcoming about her working with Ray.

Best to all,

Ron Hennessy

It seems like every few months or so we all make lists
of our favorite Nanci this-or-that. Honestly, I
cannot even pick 5 favorite because, as we all know,
Nanci has so many great songs.
What I think would be more interesting--and I don't
mean to be blasphemous or anything here; I love
Nanci's music as much as the next person--would be to
see what everyone's least favorite Nanci songs are. I
can think of a handful that I always end up skipping
when I listen to her CDs.

1. The Power Lines: doesn't sound bad, but for such a
great songwriter she sure repeats the words "the power
lines" a lot in this one.

2. Time of Inconvenience: it seems like a few people
really like this one, but I find it disturbing. I
mean, it would be nice if the worst we could say about
our time is that it's "inconvenient," but that strikes
me as an inappropriate description.

3. Hometown Streets: this one sounds like it should be
the theme song to a tv sitcom or something. Corny.

4. I'll Move Along: not a horrible song, I guess. But
definitely doesn't do anything for me--weak by NG
standards is what I mean.

* There are also a few covers that I don't like
especially the songs on OV2 that don't feature enough
Nanci; "Desperadoes..." and "...Mighty Storm" come to
mind. Also I could have done without the "I Fought
the Law" on BRFTM as it doesn't add anything to the
song.

That's all I can think of. Like I said, Nanci has
tons of great songs. I'm just wondering what people
out there don't particularly like.

I've played all of Nanci's albums through so many times that songs which
initially left me cold did eventually become acceptable and then appealing.
"Morning Train", "The Power Lines", "St Teresa", "From A Distance" for
instance - others like "John Philip Griffith" and "Radio Fragile" moved
beyond "appealing" and into the upper echelons, despite having been shrugged
at and virtually dismissed on first hearing.

But I would go along with what so far seems to be a unanimous feeling about
"I Fought The Law", and yes there are a couple of tracks on OV2 that I'm not
too bothered about, mainly because there's not enough Nanci on them
(although I DON'T include "Desperadoes" on that list, because it's such a
great song and is done exceptionally well on the album). "Leaving The
Harbour" is another song that never really does anything for me, but it does
have to compete with some real quality tracks on the Storms album.

I don't think I could come up with a "bottom" five, but for the record -
although they're not written in stone, and can vary from week to week, these
are my "top" five -

Banks of the Pontchartrain
There's a Light Beyond These Woods
Working in Corners
Trouble in the Fields
Not My Way Home

I'd better sign off quickly before I realise what I've left out......

I'm still waiting for some bright spark to introduce an "Exclude Track"
button on CD players. This would be much more useful than programming all
the tracks you do want....

To my ears, Nanci never put a foot wrong until Flyer, where the opening and
closing tracks leave me cold. Three years later, Battlefield and I Fought
The Law were equally uninspiring. And of all the marvelous recordings on
OVOR and OV2 only one drives me crazy: I love Woody Guthrie's "Deportee
(Plane Wreck at Los Gatos)" but Nanci's version is fatally marred by whoever
takes the lead vocal at 4:09, with a style completely out of step with
Nanci, Lucinda, Steve Earle etc....blew it for me.

Now, while I'm here, and in case anyone has been put off by confusing
reviews, Lucinda Williams "Essence" is my contender for album of the year,
so far (will Nanci topple her off the top spot?). What a magnificent piece
of work. The cohesion and the fullness of the mood and theme - waiting and
wanting - did not emerge until after several listenings, now I'm addicted.
The vocals! - the melodies! - that beautifully-under-played backing,
especially this chap Tony Garnier on bass. A shimmering, haunting, arousing,
delight. She has pulled up on the gravel road, switched the engine off, and
taken a moonlit walk through the woods, on a path dry and firm but in the
hollows through the trees you sense the mist and swamps. Then the occasional
flash of some animal's eyes, glinting in the darkness, watchful in case she
strays their way, but she passes through musing on her lust. It's a stunning
set. I like artists who dig this deep into their truth, and right now
Lucinda Williams must be queen of that territory. Please buy it now or I'll
be forced to send you all a copy!

Have a great weekend everyone; Bob

The 5 favourites and the not so popular lists that have cropped up
recently got me thinking about the songs I really love and those I do not
listen to as often. These obviously change depending on mood, environment
and time.

5 perennial's, that would always be near the top of my favourites list:

Fly By Night (never gets a mention in any list, good or bad!!!)
Banks Of The Pontchartrain
So Long Ago (another that never receives any attention)
Always Will
It's Just Another Morning Here

In truth there are very few Nanci songs I do not like, and skip past on
the cd player, or move the arm over on the record deck (yes I still have
one, and the first three Nanci records are in my collection on vinyl-I've
never replaced them with cd's).

There are also many, many more, as I guess everyone who has put a list up
here has found, that are worthy of inclusion.

I have to add that I am looking forward with great anticipation to "Clock
Without Hands", so much so, that I have decided to see Nanci twice here
in the UK on her autumn (fall) tour. I'm going to the second gig of the
tour, at the beginning of October, and the second last, at the beginning
of November. It will be interesting, despite having seen her 20 or more
times live, to see how the music grows as the tour progresses.

She should be pretty comfortable with the new repertoire by the time she
gets
over to the UK. Just learned that she's playing Hill Aud in Ann Arbor on
Sept
11, which I'd assume will be one of many stateside dates before heading
abroad. I'm more than ready for a new tour with new material, as almost all
of the shows I've seen since her "farewell" tour with the Crickets have been
nearly identical in terms of song selection. Not only do I eagerly
anticipate
hearing the new stuff, I hope (with little optimism) that she might dust off

some other older songs in favor of the ones she's played to death over the
past few years.

this also. Can't wait to hear it on a good stereo.

Essence
If you buy this album, scan the lyrics before you play the music.
The poetry alone is worth sixteen bucks. The whole album has a
subdued tone, and it's good, but it doesn't seem like the same
Lucinda as on her other albums.

The best track is Bus To Baton Rouge. I just got back from the
South Louisiana region (Lafayette), and the story in the lyrics
absolutely has to be real. You can feel it happening as you read
the lyrics. (I want to call Louisiana "Baja, Texas", but that
name's reserved for Old Mexico. It's a shame that I have to drive
four hundred miles for good food. (grin>)

Gove Schriver
This guy is a genius. If you happen across his album "Shine On",
grab it. It's like Townes VanZant with guitars, bass, mandolins,
dobros, and a bunch of other instruments I don't recognize. Very
good stuff.

Mariachi bands
Two weeks ago I was in San Antonio for my niece's wedding. The
reception was held at the Omni Hotel, and the Mariachi band was
absolutely the best I've ever heard. I could listen to that music
for hours on end. There were two other receptions going on at the
same time, and each had their own Mariachi band, but nobody seemed
to know their band's name. I assume all three bands were part of
the same organization. Anybody down there know what their name was?
Got to get their albums if they exist.

Ed, you are so right. More you need to say about Gove and that album, and,
by
the way, check out his web site and leave a message:

You failed to mention that Nanci backs up Gove on the song "Shine On". Not
everyone knows that. Townes, Dylan and Guy Clark wrote songs on the album.
Also Mike Williams' "Balloon Song" is on the album as well. Mike produced
Nanci's first recordings on the B.F. Deal label.

One more pleasure is John Prine singing on "Girl from the North Country".
