FYI, there's an article (with a cute pic) regarding NG's upcoming tour on
the following site: www.livedaily.citysearch.com/news/3287.html

The LiveDaily website also has a bio article on NG at:

Subject: NN: List of lists
   From: Tony Cox (tonycox@pacific.net.au>
   Date: Sun, 08 Jul 2001 21:53:16 -0400

For those who enjoy perusing a good list now and again (and who doesn't),
I've tallied up all the Top 5's (or 6's or 7's!) submitted by NN'ers to
date and compiled a chart (below).

Each person's selections were awarded one vote, regardless of whether they
ranked the songs or not. The person who submitted a top ten had the first
6 counted. (I decided that for those who did submit one or two more than
the agreed five, it was fairest to count them all rather than omit one or
two at random). For the person who submitted Love At The Five And Dime
five times - sorry - just one vote was counted:) Also, different versions
of the same song were counted as ...the same song. Anyway, here's the
results, based on the 36 people who responded:

1) Gulf Coast Highway (10 votes)
2) Late Night Grand Hotel (9 votes)
3) Banks of the Pontchartrain (8 votes)

Next, each with 6 votes:
Love At The Five And Dime
  So Long Ago
There's a Light Beyond These Woods

and with 5 votes each:
  Goodnight To A Mother's Dream
  The Wing And The Wheel
These Days In An Open Book
  Trouble In The Fields

and with 4 votes each:
  Daddy Said
  More Than A Whisper
  The Flyer
  Time Of Inconvenience
  Working In Corners

A further 9 songs got 3 votes each, 12 got 2 and another 35 got 1.
That makes 71 different favourites between just 36 NN'ers, which is pretty
amazing, and just shows what a rich back catalogue Nanci has given us to
enjoy.

No doubt there will be some more 'all time greats' on the way once 'Clock
Without Hands' sees the light of day. Roll on the 31st.

Tony - on a good day to be indoors doing something fairly pointless ;-)

So, in my daily ramblings (shouldn't I really be
working? *Don't tell*), I again stumble across a good
thing.

On the Americana Music Website's home page, there is a
picture of Nanci at MerleFest 2000 & below that one of
Emmylou. Very good pics.

Thought you'd wanna know.

Does anybody else think that Emmylou looks a little too much like the
woman who consorted with the devil and ended up killing herself in the end
of the Stephen King's "The Stand" movie?

Yeah me too, but today isn't "Dress in Drag" day at work. (Not that
there's anything WRONG with that).

   From: ConorMG@aol.com
   Date: Thu, 5 Jul 2001 20:47:26 EDT

Hello from England, where I've been reading your letters with astonishment
for the last seven months. Many of your favourite performers of 2000
haven't
surfaced here in the shops yet, but my listening has been hugely broadened
by
your recommendations all the same, so thanks for that. I love the amount of
frank valuing of music on here, so the recent diffidence over comparing NG
and EH is puzzling.
Unlike with most other singers, I don't find it easy to pick out Nanci's
best, so I've agonised for weeks over it, scrutinising the words (fatal!),
playing rewind a lot, realising how much 'Flyer' has grown on me, and
concluding with three lists:

my best:
Goodbye to a Mother's Dream (Flyer)
   One Blade Shy (Late Night)
   It's Too Late (Late Night)
Are You Tired Of Me, My Darling (Other Voices OR)
Spin on a Red Brick Floor (Once in a VBM)

my favourites:
I Wish It Would Rain (Little Love Affairs)
   So Long Ago (Little LA)
   I'll Move Along (Blue Roses)
   Everything's Coming Up Roses (BR)
   Morning Train (BR)

and the ones I skip:
   Desperadoes (Other Voices Too)
   Summer Wages (OVT)
He Was a Friend of Mine (OVT)
   Maybe Tomorrow (Blue Roses)
   Heaven (Late Night)

I think the mischief, fun, surprises, expressiveness, and instrumentation in

her songs are what keep me listening so much. I'm looking at about 135 songs

I love on eleven cds in front of me, and can't think of anyone who remotely
approaches giving me this much pleasure.

My thoughts exactly, and I couldn't have said it better, except to maybe add
that I
believe Emmylou is more diversified in her choice of music than Nanci is.
This
probably has more to do with the fact that Emmylou is more of a song
singer/interpreter
and doesn't write much, and Nanci is more of a writer who just happens to
sing ;-)

And from everything I've heard and read, Nanci and Emmylou are the best of
friends.

p.s. I just went on-line and bought tickets for the Sept Nanci show at Hill

Auditorium in Ann Arbor. Thanks to halebops timely
e-mail reminder I was able to get Center section Row 1.....thanks halebops

p.p.s. I love the new Lucinda Williams cd Essence more with each listen. I
agree
with Emmylou's Time Magazine review.

As often happens with these lists, we have lost track of the original
comment. The first person to raise this subject did not comment on whether
Nanci or Emmy was the best. She just said she was biased towards Nanci, and
thus wondered why Emmy received more publicity. I said (and I still stand by
it) that Emmy gets more publicity simply because her connection to GP makes
such a good story. It doesn't really matter whether GP was good, bad, or
stoned.

But, like it or not, GP has been credited by many with inventing
country-rock (I prefer the term "folk-rock"). And Emmy IS very good at
nurturing talented musicians, but she had a lot of help for many years from
Barry Tashian- leader of the Hot Band and a long-time associate of GP.
Finally, every Emmylou Harris interview I've ever read contains quotes from
Emmy about how much of her career has been based on pursuing GP's vision by
providing much needed attention to the music of folks like the Louvin
Brothers and the Carter Family.

That's right. Following on from that original comment, I observed that
Emmylou
perhaps gets a disproportionate amount of adulation relative to her "great
album"
output, while Nanci gets relatively little (other than from the likes of
us).

Whether this makes Nanci "better" or not is I agree contentious, and as
Steve
says, not the original point. That said, it shouldn't be taboo to express
an
opinion. After all, most of you would contend that Nanci is "better" than
Shania
(i.e. more artistically and musically gifted). How did you come to that
decision? Oooh, very controversial, I'm sure :-)

And yes, I lived through the Gram Parsons era and have owned a few records
by or
featuring him, but have been pretty ..erm...perplexed at his elevation to
legendary super-cool cult icon status since his death - and by association,
anyone
that had anything to do with him. As I implied, a good career move, as it
turned
out!

Subject: Why Emmylou Harris
   From: Petop@aol.com
   Date: Mon, 9 Jul 2001 09:21:26 EDT

Someone recently wondered on this list why Emmylou Harris has attained the
popularity she has. This, from today's New York Times, by Neil Strauss,
seems
to have one answer to that question:

"Over the last six years Ms. Harris has attained a point in her
career
that few artists ever reach. It is that of musicians, like Neil Young, who
can follow their own vision with the blessing of their fans. And whether
that
vision leads them to mediocrity or excellence on a particular song or album,

it does nothing to diminish the level of respect they have earned, because
it
is known that their intentions were pure, their decisions were true to
themselves, and their talent did not disappear with youth.
"For Ms. Harris, 54, whose rise to eminence has been to have been
accompanied by the graying of her hair, the method for achieving this has
been a combination of her skills as a talent scout (consistently supporting
Rodney Crowell, Buddy Miller and countless others) and by maintaining a
balancing act between the mainstream lineage of country and folk, and the
alternative branches and possibilities outside the genres. Two entirely
contrasting works, the traditional bluegrass album "Roses in the Snow" and
the arty ambient record "Wrecking Ball," are among her best albums, and that

is a testament not just to her range but also to its quality. "

Subject: NN: Holiday music, live & on CD
   From: ChocChippy@aol.com
   Date: Thu, 05 Jul 2001 12:02:33 EDT

Well, we've been peripatetically hearing & seeing a lot of good stuff this
last week; I got my advance copy of Clock Without Hands at the end of last
week & quickly got my review in to ROCKRGRL in time for the next issue. (I
liked it! For more complete analysis, see the next ROCKRGRL, in which I also
review the new Melissa Ferrick, Meghan Cary & a couple of others).

It was SOOO good to hear that Nanci voice singing new songs, (and the lovely
cover of a Sinatra song), and looking forward to playing it the rest of the
summer and seeing where it fits in the pantheon...my copy is now headed off
on tour with Meghan Cary, who is going to put a few thousand more miles on
her Subaru before the end of the summer, because we NG fans have to take
care of each other, and Meghan needs good driving music.

Speaking of...we went on the road ourselves down to South Carolina last week
for my (nbnbthth) high school reunion and stopped by the excellent Trustus
Theater in Columbia to see their production of Hedwig & the Angry Inch,
which has been my favorite musical of the last 10 or so years. (Lift up your
hands).

For the musicians on the list, Trustus is inaugurating a late-night series
of singer/songwriter & jazz nights starting this fall. If you're touring in
the area, or are in the region, you might want to check out the facility
www.trustus.org and contact the artistic directors, Jim & Kay Thigpen. I
love Trustus, and not just because they produced my first play! They are a
vital part of the S.C. arts scene, going boldly where no other group has
gone before...

We were trapped in travel hell Sunday & part of Monday (see my report in the
Frommers.com newsletter next Friday), but made it back eventually early
Monday (our luggage came home Tuesday).

So we were a bit exhausted and did not head downtown in the off-and-on rain
to fight the crowds to see the free Emmylou Harris show at Battery Park
yesterday. We napped. I'd rather see Emmylou indoors anyway.

We did, however, venture downtown to the Bitter End, where Meghan Cary
(heard of her? ;-) was playing her farewell gig before heading off on tour,
and were happy to hear from someone we didn't know before, a
singer/songwriter named Mark Aaron James, who has recently moved from
Nashville to NYC. He is one talented guy, and quite warped, which is just my
style. He sang the title song of his next CD, "Adventures with a Plastic
Bag," and a lovely song called "Invisible Man," about, you guessed it, the
actual Invisible Man. And one he called his "Bon Jovi power ballad" that was
beautiful and anthemic, and in fact would make a lovely song for JBJ. I hope
his people are talking to Bon Jovi's people...

Meghan has already assembled her hardcore fan base that will say "we
remember when she played [insert famous song here] for the first time..." at
some point in the future.

She did do a brand new one, a work in progress. I rather like when artists
bring in unfinished pieces, because from show to show you can follow their
progress (and sometimes say: why'd they ditch that one, I liked it!)

So again I say she's definitely a keeper & worth seeing live; the tour will
take her (with Brenda White and Sarah Pinsker) to western NY and New England
in July, and she'll be soloing through Virginia, the Carolinas and Georgia
in August.

Well, it's back to work for me...

Kathleen W.
